Historically important.......2007-01-15
A great book that is actually a compilation of the letters that Mr Lucas sent home to his wife during World War II. He had promised her that he'd try to write "every other day" and his letters are a chronological documentary of not only the progress of the war (from a Sailors view), but also an insight into what life was like in the Navy at that time. Historically important to anyone serving in the Navy, this book is listed on the Navy's recommended reading list.
Miles Away.......2004-06-09
A touching account of one soilders love for his beloved wife.

Book Description
Winner of the Columbia University Lionel Trilling Award. Robert Murphy was in the prime of his career as an anthropologist when he felt the first symptom of a malady that would ultimately take him on an odyssey stranger than any field trip to the Amazon: a tumor of the spinal cord that progressed slowly and irreversibly into quadriplegia. In this gripping account, Murphy explores society's fears, myths, and misunderstandings about disability, and the damage they inflict. He reports how paralysislike all disabilitiesassaults people's identity, social standing, and ties with others, while at the same time making the love of life burn even more fiercely.

"The Body Silent" by Robert Murphy.......2007-09-26
Valuable insights into the world of the disabled from many angles by a respected professor with progressive spinal cord disease. Highly recommended to persons with disabilities and to the general public who often encounter them.
An incredible book by an incredible person..........2006-12-31
This is one of my books that I bought and put aside to read later. I don't remember how long ago I bought it but I am certainly glad that I gave it a second chance to read it before discarding it. I am now not planning to sell this book, as it is too important a volume on disability in society, and it certainly applies to the bioethical and eduethical work I do on the side of my 'regular' job of teaching and writing.
Murphy is unlike me in that he came upon his disability later in life, while I was born basically deaf and remained that way for the first 13 years of my life before getting a hearing aid at the age of 13. Murphy had to deal with a slow-growing tumor that entwined itself into his spinal cord. Unlike many tumors that can be excised with surgery, his was such that the possibility of removing it also came with the possibility of losing everything else, including his life or the ability to continue to do his important work. Like many of us who have chosen not to take the risk of surgery and who don't believe that to be disabled is worse than to be dead, Murphy worked with and around his progressive disabling and was able to give the world another 15 years of his wisdom in cultural anthropology.
This book is a must-read for any person with a disability, no matter when they became disabled. Murphy had the background of an academic anthropologist, with many years of successful teaching and writing for major journals in anthropology and culture. He had also written major books, one of which continues to be used in most universities on women and gender in primitive societies. So in coming into the genre of disability studies, he brought to the field a first-rate mind and ability to write so others can understand difficult concepts.
Murphy's book is not the usual autobiography that one usually expects, but rather explores disability (specifically his, but he introduces others and also the culture) without a single shard of either self-pity or 'hey, look at me' attitude that is so often written about in media (where the media puts someone with a disability on a pedestal that is unrealistic of the very real problems that those of us with disabilities face daily). He writes presenting his disablement as a fait-accompli, dealing with the problems as they arose...and in some cases, he ignored his health situation to the point of putting him at risk for infection from bedsores because he was too busy teaching. Like Murphy states, that wasn't courage as often as it was just not wanting to take the time to have his physical body get in the way of what he was trying to do. In treating his disablement with this attitude, he did become the courageous person that he presented to the public...and I wish so badly I had had the opportunity to meet him and hear him speak. Like so many others such as Michael Fox and Christopher REeve, Murphy was a non-disabled person whose close encounters with his own disablement led him to become a voice in a minority that has long been voiceless. He died much too soon, but in giving his last fifteen years of work to physical disabilities in society, he has provided us with an ongoing voice. I certainly intend to use his words and his writing in my work in hopes that it will inspire others as it has inspired me.

Hearing the Body.......2001-10-13
Bob became paraplegiac at a late age, after having enjoyed a long, brilliant career as a professor at Columbia and an anthropologist who, with his anthropologist wife Yolanda, lived among Amazonian Indians and Saharan camel nomads. He was too clever to be overwhelmed with self-pity. This book was written from the perspective that he loved most: what you'd think is true is probably just the opposite. We expect paralyzed people to get better, like other "sick" patients, but the problem is, they don't: they're damaged selves. Hey--just like everybody else. We all have to come to terms with life's damages and our isolation and loneliness as we attempt to cope with it. Who would ever have thought it possible--we can all learn something compelling about our normal selves, viewing life from the wheelchair! Ironically (and this is the kind of twist that styles Murphy's ideas) the disabled are a mirror for the rest of us: "The paralytic is, quite literally, a prisoner of the flesh, but most humans are convicts of sorts. We live within walls of our own making, staring out at life through bars thrown up by culture and annealed by our fears. . . .[that] induces a mental paralysis, a stilling of thought." Murphy has never sold his soul to an illusion: he speaks candidly as a participant observer of his own encounter with symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and transformation. Always the fox, he transcends the smoke screen that our cultural prejudices force upon us, and hears his own body and its message with astounding clarity and patience. This is a book that students read eagerly, in both anthropology and sociology classes, because its message is provocative, and its ethnography is true. It teaches us all to listen to the sound of our own struggles with personal identity and mortality, and to smile with the knowledge that we are not alone.
Disibility means reliance on others.......2000-07-29
Ten years ago since the American Disabilities Act went into effect, the disabled still feel that they are isolated from the real world. Former professor of anthropology at Columbia University Robert F. Murphy examines from his personal perspective the life of a disabled person in a world where he was independent and zealous of life. The reader will discover what it is like for a disabled person to battle besides the inability to carry out everyday function we take for granted. The Body Silent is unlike other books written by the disable. The Body Silent is an excellent book full of prose and not journal entries of how fortunate the non-disabled really are. This book (recommended to me by anthropologist Dr. James Trostle) will change your perspective and outlook on how it is like to grow up again and learning how to walk, one step at a time.
a celebration of life worth living.......1999-10-28
As a graduate student in anthropology, I came to know and respect Bob Murphy more than any other scholar. Of the texts he wrote, The Body Silent, stands apart in that it says much about the man, anthropology, disability in American society, and life itself. It will deeply touch a wide variety of readers, and for those that knew him, will bring tears to their eyes. As to its impact on what is now known as disability studies, it put the discipline on the academic agenda. As such, it is a seminal text and is a must for anyone thinking of entering the field.

There are Plenty of Delicious Pizza Recipes in this Delightful Book.......2006-07-16
Seven years ago my husband Dub and I sailed into Whangarai Harbour in New Zealand. On our way in I spied some friends or ours, Gayle and John, who we'd met in Tahiti. They were Kiwis and they were ending their five year circumnavigation, home at last. We anchored close to their boat and later dinghied over for sundowners (usually Coke and Rum). That evening, as usual, we told tall tales of our adventures at sea and we congratulated ourselves on being in this wonderful place at this wonderful time. Later, as we were saying our goodbyes, Gayle gave me her set of the Salamandar Book of Series Cookbooks. They are sold by HP Books in the States as paperbacks. Gayle carried these books around the planet and now she was giving them to me, complete with her notes (written in the books) on the recipes, how well she and John liked certain dishes, which were their favorites, how hard they were to prepare. She knew I was a cook and she thought I'd appreciate them. She was right.
Like all the books in the series "The Book of Pizzas & Italian Breads" is about five inches wide and about a foot tall, making them kind of unique among cookbooks. But one should not be put off because of the odd shape, these are real books and you can find mighty darned good recipes in them like in this book. Many people would think that you couldn't bake on a sailboat, but you can. We have a convection microwave on "Tara" and it bakes just fine. In fact the last thing we did in it was the Asparagus and Ham Squares on Page 47 and "Yum Yum" is what I have to say about them. There are so many different pizza combinations and ways to make pizza, probably the list is endless, but there are quite a few good ones presented here. Plus, as an additional added benefit you get some very delicious dessert bread recipes. What a deal. I use this book a lot and if you get it, I bet you will too.

Great introduction........2003-01-13
In its almost 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.
This installment, the Book of Pizzas and Italian Breads, starts with a brief introduction into the history of pizzas, the necessary equipment, a glossary of ingredients and a step-by-step guide to pizza crusts, and then presents recipe suggestions ranging from traditional pizzas to Italian breads. Special chapters are dedicated to quick and easy pizzas, pizzas for entertaining, pizzas for kids, pizzas from around the world, unusually shaped pizzas and dessert pizzas. Classics such as pizza Margherita, quattro stagioni, marinara and napolitana, bread sticks, various calzones, focaccia, polenta bread, panettone, and four cheese, Hawaiian and salami pizzas, appear next to unique recipes such as choc-truffle pizza, French brie pizza, grape bread, sausage and apple pizza, and sour cream and caviar pizza.
From apple pie pizza to whole wheat pizza dough, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the endless possibilities of baking food on a slab of dough, covered with cheese - and at a relative bargain price, to boot. Also recommended for fans of Italian cooking: This series' installments on antipasti, pasta and light pasta sauces.

Book Description
Much care and thought go into gift giving. And the way a gift is wrapped can say a lot about the care and thought that went into its selection. This easy-to-follow, idea-packed volume draws on traditional forms and techniques of Japanese wrapping to create unusual, attractive, and surprisingly
simple ways to wrap presents of all shapes and sizes.
The Japanese combine a love of ceremony with an equally strong fondness for giving and receiving presents. They have developed a sophisticated system employing many interesting and eye-pleasing ways to wrap all kinds of gifts. This tradition is evident in techniques such as layering several sheets
of paper to create a color contrast or subtle shading effect, wrapping part of the gift and leaving pan visible, using origami-like folds to decorate or add interest, and fashioning soft wrappings from large squares of colorfully patterned cloth called furoshiki.
The author draws on his extensive knowledge of this Japanese tradition and his experience in other forms of paper craft, including doll making, to create sixty-six imaginative gift wrappings.
All sixty-six ideas are shown in beautiful color plates and accompanied by step-by-step instructions that take you from the materials you need to the finishing touches. Let these exciting and creative wrappings add a new dimension to your gift giving.

nice and useful.......2007-03-14
This book is nice and useful.
The folding instructions and matching photo's are very clear.
The ideas in the book are original (at least they seem so to me).
I voted 3 stars, 'cause it's not really my style. I've warmed up better for other gift wrapping books.
Must Have for Those With Gift Wrapping OCD!.......2004-06-13
There is something so beautiful and special about a thoughtfully wrapped gift. Forget those garish papers with bright colors that assault your senses. Learn to wrap things so that the wrapping itself is a gift. This book shows you exactly how to wrap your gift with the subtleness found in so many things Japanese. You don't even need boxes for most of the numerous wrapping techniques, and therein lies the beauty. Highly recommended, you won't ever want to part with this one.
Very usefull book.......2002-09-10
It is fantastic! I loved this book. I has pages whith colored photos of all the desings. The autor is precise (acurate)in the measures and diagrams, important for learning the new ideas proposed. It is very crreative and usefull.
(I'm sorry about my english...i don't write it very well, it's not my language. Anyway i think that you will understand my message).
This is book is OK........2001-11-28
I expected more ideas on how to wrap beautiful presents from this book, but was only moderately satisfied from its content. This is certainly one of the better books out there on amazon.com about beautiful gift wrapping. However, I have seen many more beautiful ideas on how to wrap gifts in Asia. If only there was a book that described and taught more ideas on gift-wrapping.
This beautiful presentation oozes with artful tradition........2001-01-10
If you're searching for artistic and elegant ways of wrapping up gifts, you will fall in love with this book! Each idea is beautifully presented and diagrammed in detail. There are wrapping ideas from the artfully simple and spghisticated to the ultimately elegant and intricate...gift wrapping for the beginner paper folder to advanced challenges. They are all wonderful with that wonderful touch of Japanese artistic grace that make the outside of the gift as intriguing as the inside and can make the mundane look magnificent. Even when I'm not putting the ideas to use, I find I love to look through the book over and over.

Description:
To determine if either herbaceous or woody plants are more competitive with longleaf pine (Pinus palustris P. Mill.) seedlings, two vegetation management treatments-herbaceous plant control (HPC, No or Yes) and woody plant control (WPC, No or Yes) were applied in newly established longleaf pine plantings in a randomized complete block 2x2 factorial design in two studies (@a=0.05). Both studies were broadcast prescribed burned as a normal management practice and the soils were of moderate texture. In the fourth growing season and 2 years after treatments ceased in Study 1, the HPC plots had more herbaceous plant productivity than the no HPC (NHPC) plots and arborescent vegetation had recovered from the WPC treatment. In Study 2, herbaceous plant productivity was less on the HPC plots than on the NHPC plots and the WPC plots had more herbaceous plant productivity and less arborescent vegetation than the no WPC plots. In both studies, HPC significantly increased height growth of the longleaf pine trees although total control of herbaceous plants was neither attempted nor achieved. The WPC treatment did not affect longleaf pine height growth. After six growing seasons, the longleaf pine trees averaged 0.9, 1.5, 1.1, and 1.7m tall on the Burn only, Burn-HPC, Burn-WPC, and Burn-WPC-HPC treatments, respectively, in Study 1. In Study 2, the longleaf pines averaged 3.8, 4.8, 3.9, and 4.8m tall on the Burn only, Burn-HPC, Burn-WPC, and Burn-WPC-HPC treatments, respectively. Herbaceous plant control reduced Mg concentrations in the living longleaf pine needles in both studies. Foliar P was generally deficient. Overall, however, the longleaf pine foliage had good nutritional balance on these moderately textured soils.

Written for pregnancy prevention, but good resource.......2007-09-19
This is a great resource for really getting to know your body and cycle. What I love is that it includes all the scientific research and studies it's based on, so you can objectively judge the evidence yourself.
My only issue is that it seems written more from the perspective of preventing pregnancy- if you are trying to conceive, it doesn't give any clues as to how things change if you DO conceive. All in all, great resource and a very easy method to follow. Only took about an hour to read the main portions too, so it's not like it takes intense studying and measuring.
It works!!!.......2007-07-20
Very good book for when you are trying to conceive. This book was recommended to us when we were trying to conceive our first child. It truly worked on the first try, and we were both amazed and shocked to have gotten pregnant with him so quicky. Good buy.
Interesting but not definitive.......2007-07-13
Dr. Billings' book is quite repetitive, which for some people may help them grasp the important concepts of the method (it is the most important concepts that are repeated over and over and over again). I found the question-and-answer format of one of the larger chapters made it difficult to locate the information relevant to my situation.
This book provides enough information to use the method, but I found Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler to be more comprehensive, easier to read and understand, and easier to refer back to.
So helpful.......2007-01-28
I was interested in natural family planning before, but the birth control pill seemed like an easier method as a newlywed. Well, after an unplanned pregnancy (while on the pill) that ended in miscarriage, I could not bring myself to go back to using the pill. My husband and I wanted a birth control that would be safe and reliable for us. I started researching the Billings Method, saw that it was highly effective and totally natural, but didn't find much information on how to use the method. Then I purchased this book.
I learned so much about my own cycle--about reproductive health in general. The biggest thing I learned is that by simple everyday observations, a woman can know her own times of fertility, in order to either achieve or prevent pregnancy. Dr. Billings describes exactly how to use the Ovulation Method, and after reading the book I was confident about using this as our brith control. Everything was explained clearly, and I keep the book on hand if I have questions. So far, this has worked out well for us, and we are happy.
I recommend this book to anyone who has had trouble with other forms of birth control or is looking for a natural alternative.
BEWARE!!.......2005-08-02
Within one month of implementing this method to avoid pregnancy we were pregnant. We followed my cycle for a full 6 months without having intercourse - very difficult but important since we were not ready to have children. As a scientist, I fell for all of the evidence listed in the book, but unlike a scientist, I failed to question it. There is a lot more evidence out there that this method does not work. Be on guard, do your research, and be prepared!

What A Great Book.......2007-03-24
This book is a must have for fans of the Oak Ridge Boys. It is well written by Joe Bonsall and has many very interesting articles about the group and its history.
A wonderful look at the Oak Ridge Boys........2006-12-21
I bought this book last year after one of the Oak Ridge Boys concerts and I'm very happy I did. Joe Bonsall has written a great book, humorous yet moving. It explains how he came to be part of the Oak Ridge Boys and their rise to success. It is chock full of pictures and Joe has penned some witty captions as well. The early days in gospel were very informative; I, for one, had not realized how the group could be a great success in gospel music and still just a step away from starving. The only item the book does not discuss is the discord and subsequent breakup with William Lee Golden for a few years. Given the fact that the quartet is back together again with seemingly no problems now, that's probably wise. I should mention that Mr. Bonsall does not gloss over the fact that Golden was gone and there's a nice tribute to Steve Sanders as well. I enjoyed the insiders look at their concerts plus seeing how they cope with life on the road. Joe Bonsall has written quite a bit about the group and it is all very informative. If you enjoy the Oak Ridge Boys, you'll definitely love this book.
An American Journey.......2006-02-25
If you are an Oak Ridge Boys Fan like I am,you will love this book.
