Mister Williams at his best.......2004-07-25
I will confess at the start a personal bias; I am currently the webmaster for the regimental website of the Calgary Highlanders (www.calgaryhighlanders.com), the very unit in which Mr. Williams began his lengthy military career. I have not yet met Mr. Williams, however, though I have enjoyed his book THE LONG LEFT FLANK very much. I have yet to read his histories of the Patricias or of Lord Byng of Vimy.
I have, however, read this volume with considerable interest. In addition to the very rare photos of historical figures drawn in broad strokes by regimental historians such as Copp, Bercuson and Farran, this book really does paint those same figures in more human ways. One wishes Williams went into more detail regarding the figures he didn't like, but I suppose only the hard core regimental historians would have had the foggiest of who he was talking about.
As it stands, the book is the perfect length and discusses his entire life in detail. Those hoping for a rootin' shootin' story will be disappointed; the prewar days of the Great Depression are covered in equal time, and Williams served overseas in a very important role - away from the front lines.
Williams has the eye for detail that sets apart the great historians from the good ones, and is clever at spinning interesting tales. If one had to find something to criticize, perhaps one or two of his tales don't have as much of a punch line as one would like, but overall this Highlander has done his old regiment, and himself, very proud.
Congratulations to Mr. Williams for an excellent book, one hopes not the last in a string of fine works by this distinguished Canadian.
A vivid and unforgettable reading experience.......2004-04-05
Far From Home: A Memoir Of A 20th Century Solider by Jeffrey Williams (winner of the 1983 Governor General's Literary Award for Non-Fiction), is his personal story as a man who served his country as an officer in the Canadian army from the 1920s to the 1970s both in times of war and periods of peace. A thoroughly hands-on, down-to-earth memoir recounting personal experiences, reflections on the history of a great nation, and a close-up look at war itself, Far From Home is a vivid and unforgettable reading experience. Far From Home is a welcome contribution to the growing library of Military History & Biography collections.

Great Recipes.......2005-10-03
I love this cookbook ! My son, age 12, was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The change in diet has been hard for him. With help from the recipes in "The New Family Cookbook for People with Diabetes", we have been able to find things that my son can have. He especially likes the Chicken Nuggets, Creamy Macaroni and Cheese, and Angel Food Cake with Cocoa Whipped Cream. There are many different types of recipes in this book. I'm sure there are some for everyones tastes.
The New Family Cookbook for People with Diabetes.......2005-01-14
A wonder cookbook with lots of good, easy to prepare recipes that help me stick to the diabetic diet plan my registered dietitian prepared for me. My family also enjoys many of the recipes even though they are not diabetic.
The only complaint I have about the book is the index. I use the index frequently when I am looking for a specific recipe. This book does not put letters of the alphabet in the index as a location aid in finding a listing.
Me and My Diabetes.......2000-09-27
I have type 2 Diabetes. My Doctor has told me that my Diabetes has gotten to the point that I will need insulin. He tells me that I need to get more exercise. I do my best. To my scale I am losing weight; but to his scale I am the same or I weigh even more. This Cookbook to me will help me eat what I should eat and the amont I should be eating.
THE TRUTH ABOUT SUGAR.......2000-02-23
As a Registered Dietitian, for more than 20 years, and Certified Diabetes Educator, for over 10 years, I was so distressed by reviewer comments regarding sugar in the diabetic diet, that I am taking time to respond.
Since 1994 dietitians and educators working with people with diabetes have been trying to get the truth out about sucrose (sugar). Sugar is not a forbidden food for people with diabetes.
Scientific evidence from more than a dozen studies has shown that the use of sugar does impair blood glucose control in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Sugar and foods containing sugar must be substituted for other carbohydrates, gram for gram, and not simply added to the diabetes meal plan. In making such substitutions, the nutrient content of concentrated sweets and sucrose-containing foods, as well as the presence of other nutrients frequently ingested with sucrose, such as fat, must be considered.
The bottom line for people with diabetes is to check the total carbohydrate in a recipe or on a food label and work that into their diabetes meal plan. Because there are individual variations in blood glucose response, self-monitoring is an important part of diabetes control.
Great Cookbook Period.......2000-02-21
Great food for the whole family. Almost everthing I eat comes from this book. (I am not taking drugs - just diet and exercise.) It has helped me lower my blood sugar 40 points in three months and so far I have not run out of new things to try. Even friends who do not have diabetes have bought the book, just for the reduced fat/low sugar/low salt recipes. It is a hit in my house.

Book Description
Gardening and flower arranging are two of the most passionately pursued pastimes. Now, from the Garden Club of America-one of the most respected garden organizations in the country with 195 clubs nationwide-comes a glorious, full-color book showcasing the most imaginative, elegant, and dramatic floral displays being created today.
The fascinating text reveals how the best arrangers create their floral masterpieces and gives readers the how-to advice and inspiration they need to create their own beautiful arrangements.
Customer Reviews:
Fairly Disappointing.......2006-08-20
Just received mine in the mail today. Based on the other reviews, I was expecting beautiful, practical arrangements for every occasion and season. The book is too impractical, though--most of the arrangements are too weird and 'artsy' and would not work for normal special occasions, like weddings and showers. There are a few pages with some beautiful, practical arrangements, but no instructions on how to re-create them. You would be better off flipping through a Martha Stewart magazine for ideas and how-to's.
A Thorough and Beautiful Look at Advanced Flower Arranging!.......2004-04-10
When Spring finally comes to New England, thoughts of the flowers to come begin to dominate my thoughts. In such a mood, I spotted The Fine Art of Flower Arranging at the library as a way to provide some of this beauty in advance of the real thing arriving outside. I was bowled over by what I found in the book. It is simply the most comprehensive view of advanced flower arranging that it has ever been my pleasure to read.
The book begins with a history of flower arranging from the perspectives of Western civilization and of Japan, both of which are amply illustrated with outstanding examples. The book goes on to show how both traditions are now being combined in contemporary arrangements in the United States.
Next, you visit the gardens of four arrangers to see how they use their own raw material to create arrangements. This was most impressive for me because three of the gardens are in New England where I live. The fourth is in Hawaii where I often tour gardens. I got a number of ideas about how to use my own garden to help with arrangements from seeing these gardens.
The book then turns to flower shows, and devotes a chapter each to table arrangements, working in defined spaces, pedestal arrangements, fashion-related arrangements, museum arrangements designed to complement fine art and arrangements that serve as outside sculptures. There are many remarkable arrangements in each chapter which will inspire my future arrangements. I seldom have gotten so many good ideas from one source!
The book also has extended appendices about how to get involved with flower arranging, conditioning flowers and plant material for display, mechanically assembling arrangements, dates of flower shows (including museum shows), and other resources for arrangers.
If you buy only one book about flower arranging, I encourage you to make it this one. I think this book can help you create much more advanced designs than you would ever think of on your own . . . which will add to both your skill and pleasure in designing.
May beauty always surround you!
Most Beautiful Book.......2002-11-25
I think this book is the most beautiful book on flower arranging that I have ever seen. There are all types of arrangements for all seasons and all occasions. I am giving it to all members of my family and many friends for Christmas, even teenage granddaughters. It will become an heirloon and study guide of the future.
American Amateur Flower Arrangers Debut.......2002-11-13
For years, amateur foreign floral arrangers have compiled anthologies of their work - from France, Italy, Belgium, New Zealand and even South Africa. "The Fine Art of Flower Arranging" is the American compendium, featuring arrangers from Maine to Hawaii who have created 150 works of floral art. Also unique is its combination of historical perspective, flower show flower arranging competition entries and an extensive resources and further reading section. I particularly enjoyed the arrangers' texts which explain their thinking and methods. What a fabulously rich learning experience, beautifully written and compiled by Nancy D'Oench and enhanced by Mick Hales' exciting floral photography. A coffeetable book that makes the ideal gift for any flower arranger.

Good For Dealing With Pain.......2006-12-08
I really liked this book.. It helped me learn to deal with my pain more than any other book I read on Fibromyalgia.
easy reader.......2002-08-15
I found this book to be very brief and to the point. They have a lot of tips that can be incorporated into your daily life routines. The testimonials let you know that you are not alone and that just because of this diagnosis of fibromyalgia may slow you down a little, it should not stop you from living a meaningful life. It brought up to speed and provided some clarity on how to get myself back on my feet again!!
The Book helped me be in control and not the disease........2000-01-09
I found this book extremely helpful to myself and a 17yr old girl who was recently diagnosed. We applied the charts and routines and really payed attention to the information. Any disease can gain control of you if you let it. I have a history of chronic heart disease and have learned that there is more to controlling a disease and recognizing how is the beginning. For this book to be helpful you must be open minded and really listen to the message and be honest with yourself in order to get control of the disease. But I can guarantee anyone with the disease if you apply this book thoroughly it will make all the difference in the world. My doctor read the book in order to help treat me and that helped even more. We are only in the beginning of understanding this disease so don't expect your family and friends to know or understand it, most doctors don't consider it unless there is nothing else to call it. But it's real and debilitating. Try It!
Authors need to be more educated.......1999-06-11
This book sends some very bad messages. It does not explain how the course of fibromyalgia can be mild, moderate, or severe. Some people with severe FMS have incapacitating pain. This book implies, that, if you have incapacitating pain, you are 'just giving into it', and 'you need to find better ways of dealing with your pain than laying in bed'. Unfortunately, people who do not have FMS read books like these, and get the wrong messages about people with severe FMS. I would not recommend this book.
Authors need to be more educated about disabling effects.......1999-06-11
This book had some very wrong messages in it, the authors are uneducated. (FMS can be mild, moderate, or severe, everyone is not at the same level) Some people have incapacating pain, and this book implied that if you do, "you're just giving into it", or, "you need to find other ways of dealing with your pain besides laying in bed" Unfortunately, people who don't have FMS pick these books up and read them, thus giving a bad message about the ones who have severe fibromyalgia

A Great Day in Harlem
ASIN: 0306811634
Release Date: 2002-07-16 |
Book Description
The story behind the most famous jazz photograph of all time.
And what a day it was, when nearly sixty jazz greats gathered on a Harlem street one morning in August 1958 for what was, incredibly, the photographer Art Kane's first professional shoot. Art Blakey, Charles Mingus, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, Mary Lou Williams, Thelonious Monk, Lester Young, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Marian McPartland...No one know knew how many would show up at 10:00 a.m. for what was planned as the centerfold for Esquire magazine, but at the appointed hour they began coming--by subway, by taxi, and on foot. What resulted became the most famous jazz photograph ever--instantly recognizable to jazz fans the world over and the inspiration for the 1995 Oscar-nominated documentary A Great Day in Harlem. This remarkable photograph and the outtakes and candids shot that day--reproduced here in elegant duotone on high-quality paper--are complemented by biographical information on all the musicians in the photograph and by essays from some of the greatest jazz writers of our time--Whitney Balliett, Ralph Ellison, Gary Giddins, and Dan Morgenstern.
Book Description
On a summer morning in 1958 Esquire magazine assembled the greatest jazz luminaries of the day on a door stoop in Harlem to illustrate with living proof The Golden Age of Jazz. This portrait has since become the most famous, most recognized and most collected jazz picture ever. It also became the focus for the 1995 Oscar-nominated film A Great Day in Harlem. There has never been a book published about that day, and Great Jazz Day in Harlem features not only the now-immortalized image, but many more shots from the likes of Milt Hinton and Art Kane, and even Dizzy Gillespie.

Book Description
"Joe Keenan fills MY LUCKY STAR with the kind of zanytwists he perfected in Frasier." --TIME OUT When a pair of luckless New York writers gets lured to Hollywood and hitsit big virtually overnight, mayhem on a grand scale ensues--a vortex ofhilarity that encompasses everything from a Beverly Hills spa catering tostars' most secret needs to a blackmailing scheme that threatens to disruptthe Oscars. This enormously entertaining, exuberantly naughty novel sendsup Hollywood pretense higher than it's ever been sent before.
Customer Reviews:
Many Laugh Out Loud Moments.......2007-05-29
I judge a comic novel by how often I have to set it down because I'm laughing too hard to continue. Keenan scores very high on this scale. The sex scene, while well written considered in isolation, did seem to be off-key with the lighter tone of the book. But, the book is worthwhile even if only for all of the great one liners.
You'll Laugh So Hard, You'll Cry.......2007-05-21
Hilarity and controversial sex scenes are the foundation of this installment of a series about a group of friends who uprooted their lives and moved to Los Angeles.
Keenan gets better and better........2007-02-19
I thought the previous two were the funniest books I'd ever read, but this one is even more hilarious. Some people have objected to the sex scene, but you'll be laughing too hard to be offended.
Keenan is finally back on track.......2007-02-02
After the brilliant humor and plotting of Blue Heaven, most readers probably found Puttin' on the Ritz a disappointment.
Now, at long last, Keenan returns to form with his third installment in the series My Lucky Star.
Very funny--and the much debated sex scenes are more suspenseful and funny than libidinous.
Thank god, Philip, Gilbert and Claire are back in good form.
Hysterically Funny!.......2006-12-27
I was thrilled to see that Joe Keenan has finally published another book, 10 years or so after "Blue Heaven" and "Putting on the Ritz." I picked up this book at about 3:00am suffering from jet lag, and read it to the end in one sitting. At several points, I was literally gasping for breath I was laughing so hard. Keenan is a master at methodically building comical suspense and then releasing it with an explosive and hysterical one-liner ( ". . . that would have made lesser women fall to their knees and ululate in despair").
I can't wait for the next one. Meanwhile, I'll keep rereading these fantastic books and savoring Keenan's ingenious nuggets of humor again and again.
Customer Reviews:
For Smart People Only.......2005-12-04
This is a "Hollywood" memoir, not a "Shirley MacLaine" memoir, so be advised. Yeah, she's in there all right, but you get more, so much more. It's one of the most intelligent of all the star bios. If you are looking for a lot of mindless tibits and giggly gossip, you won't find much of that here. But if you are looking for real insight into some of our star icons, like Sinatra, Dean, Mitchum, this is the place to find it. Further, if you have any interest in what making movies is like, if you want to be an actor, director, cameraman or marry one, this is the book for you. If you are a creative person who puts yourself out there for the public, you will love this book. No one else has nailed this experience like MacLaine has. I will never see the Oscars or star interviews the same way again. In fact, the writing is so exceptional and insights so wide-ranging that this book should be required reading in any film class.
Many Men and Many Movies.......2004-12-17
Is anyone's favorite star Shirley MacLaine? I doubt it. But she's spent a lot of time thinking about stardom and Hollywood and audience and appeal, and in MY LUCKY STARS she gives it to us without holding much back. Her love affair with Robert Mitchum is presented as a Romeo and Juliet folie a deux in which the two of them entered a private world out of which they never really found their way back out. When she became intimate with Yves Montand, even after knowing what he had done to Marilyn Monroe, his co-star on an earlier picture, you really have to wonder if Shirley has a masochistic streak. (I suppose co-starring with Jerry Lewis, you'd need one.) And frankly, her description of a sizzling sex affair with Danny Kaye didn't ring true.
Far more solid is her recounting of Debra Winger's acting out on the set of TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, and in one of the very last chapters, "SAY ANYTHING," Shirley really lets her hair down with a series of anecdotes about her fellow stars that are too hot to repeat; she protects their anonymity by not revealing their names, but their identities will be obvious to anyone who knows anything about Hollywood. The story about John and Bo Derek is far more graphic and gruesome than anything you could have imagined. Well, maybe it's not the Dereks, since Shirley doesn't name them, but hey, she does everything but draw their faces on the margins of the chapter. Read it if you're in the mood for a good shock.
By her own accounting, Mac Laine has now made three comebacks in the movies (with THE TURNING POINT, with TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, and with GUARDING TESS). She might go on to do more, who knows? You may not like her any more than you did before you started reading this book, but you'll have gotten a grainier look at Hollywood life than anything since the last Bruce Wagner novel. Well done, Shirley MacLaine!
Unlucky Readers.......2002-09-09
What is MacLaine's book like? Like being at a party where someone corners you, and talks to you the whole night, all about herself and her psycho-analysis of everyone else, never knowing when to shut up. Sure, I knew it was a book all about her - I was actually looking forward to reading it. Still, endless drivel and psycho-analysis on the many famous people MacLaine has met does not make for an interesting memoir. Half way through the book I gave up! I got the picture in the chapter about Lewis and Martin: the world is filled with unhappy, complex people - even Hollyworld. Next time, Shirley, remember: Less is indeed More.
Lots of juicy tidbits... Mitchum and Montand a girl should.......2001-06-23
be so lucky. I have not read Shirley's other books and I am not sure exactly why I purchased this one other than I suppose I was feeling especially nosey and liked the gossipy aspect of the book. Shirley tells a lot of her business but I suppose at this point and time in her life she could really care less how people judge her.
I always knew she had an unconventional marriage but just how unconventional was made very clear as she sustained long term affairs with Robert Mitchum, Danny Kaye and little escapades with some of her leading men like Yves Montand. What is very noticeable is that Shirley doesn't go into any of the issues associated with having such an open marriage at the time she did it. Her escapades are told with dry humor and a sort of emotional detachment. I do, however, believe that Robert Mitchum could have been one of her great loves instead of a long term affair.
I did appreciate her attempts to provide insight as to how affairs can happen so readily when making a picture. How they are in fact aided and abetted sometimes by directors and other crew members. Some directors won't let spouses on the set, some do questionable things to provoke reactions to get you to do the movie their way.... It's all very enlightening in that you do see how insecure people such as a Marilyn Monroe type would get eaten alive by these sort of games.
I suppose Frank Sinatra was really p_ _ _ _d off when this book came out because for all her flattery of him she paints such a sad picture of him. It almost.... I said almost, makes you want to overlook his ego maniac, self centered, I am God attitude towards the rest of the people on the planet. I also found her description of Debra Winger's antics on Terms of Endearment to be totally revolting. I have to think that if behavior like this is found acceptable in order to get the best from an actor then the behavior we read about shouldn't be a surprise. The anything goes behavior that is tolerated while making the movie could in fact and does create serious behavioral problems in some stars. In other words they expect real life to be like on the movie set and it doesn't work that way.
All in all I enjoyed the book, it's very juicy gossipy bits and her insights into old Hollywood.
What a broad will do for a buck!.......2001-03-10
The reply he gave when told of the book, whose reply?, who do you think, all in hearsay of course, but i believe it.Maclaines current outing is quite enjoyable really, apart from when she takes of into phycobabble, boring,in other tomes, too serious to be a good storyteller, suprisingly in this she is different, couldve dropped a few more juicy titbits, she has probably seen it all,her tales of the mafia are fasinating, that dry detached realism of hers, really suits such a subject maybe she should write a book about them sometime, but her insights into sinatra are truly fasinating, actually they are confusing, was she cutting his throat,or what, this is what baffles me,on one page calling him god,on another icily tearing him asunder, for to sinatra disloyalty, was the greatest sin of all, what i would not have given to be a fly on the wall of a reasturent, when mclaine walked in and met him after this.

Chicago's Treasured Past Revisited!.......1999-12-29
A symphony of one of Chicago's most famed room, told by none other than whom indulged in the exotic temptations, mystical delights and heavenly atmosphere provided by the playground of Hollywood Midwest created by Ernest Lessing Byfield. Thank you Stanley! Many have no idea, the glitz and glamour were had right here in Chicago. Take my advice Stanley's experiences are truly a delight to be had by all.
Slap a Sinatra tune on light a fire, mix a martini and grace the pages, it's gonna knock your socks off... don't forget the cigarette!
A new script makes these fascinating tales!.......1999-11-16
I recently attended a book-signing here in Chicago and listened to Stanley Paul tell his stories as he's never told them before, and believe me, we've all heard most of them before. But now Stanley's on the road telling his tales the way his author wrote them and what used to border on boring is absolutely wonderful! I would heartily recommend this book to every Chicagoan for sure, and anyone else who likes to read a well woven series of stories. I even ordered two more of them myself as Christmas presents. Great job!
fabulous stories, fabulous life.......1999-11-10
I have enjoyed Stanley Paul's music, especially the CD which arrived with the book. Now I can enjoy his stories. The man is simply a natural born story teller and all you need to do is listen to him to know that this is a book that would be eminently successful if it were merely transcribed with little or no ghost writer interference. Paul brings an era back to life with unforgettable stories. Thank you.
Charming, excellent, a well-told tale.......1999-11-10
I was lucky enough to be invited to one of Stanley Paul's lectures, where I bought the book, which is as much fun to read as Mr. Paul was in person. With a guy like this, writing this book must have been a snap. Obviously, all one needs to do is transcribe a tape recording of Stanley Paul's charming stories to create a memorable book.
A good portrayal of how self promotion can build a career........1999-10-28
Stanley Paul is well known in Chicago, but for his associations with celebrities much more than his musical talents. This book offers some wonderful insight into how he was able to manipulate his agents and the media in order to put (and keep) himself in a spotlight. A shameless self-promoter who not only admits his strategies, but actually prides himself on them, Mr. Paul's maneuverings make for interesting reading. It is a credit to the author, Diane Palmer, to have presented his character as possessed of a sensitivity and warmth he does not, in actuality, possess. It makes the stories much more interesting than the way they've been told by his newspaper friends throughout this last quarter century. Bravo!

Book Description
"My Lucky Star"
Dedicated to the unknown British Army officer who saved her life in Bergen-Belsen in April 1945, this is the affecting and uplifting memoir of Zdenka Fantlova, who shares in her direct, unsentimental style day-to-day life during the rise of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Fantlova's astonishing memory and remarkable love of life combine to produce a historical document that will edify and inspire its readers.
A moving story of extraordinary courage and integrity, "My Lucky Star" is also a reflection on the magical power of true love, a paean to the triumph of calmness and compassion over the machinery of hatred and murder, and a testament to the strength of the human spirit as it approaches death, struggles to survive, and is reborn.
