Book Description
This book is a collection of true stories about Peterson's, his crew's, and others' experiences during World War II. Peterson flew thirty-two missions in B-17s over Germany with the 379th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. The stories take the reader through flight training and on into combat, ranging in focus from frustrations with service life to troubles with "the brass", all told in "barracks" language with many humorous incidents included.
Prologue
Like fishermen, pilots like to tell stories, and like fish stories they often improve with the telling. However, in the days in which these accounts took place, if a storyteller got carried away and the credibility of his tale became questionable, his audience had an effective way of putting him down. In unison they would interrupt "And there I was at thirty thousand feet flying flat on my back and hanging by my jock strap."
I suppose every man views the universe from a different point of which he is the center. In war, when events move so rapidly and the participant runs the gauntlet of life with such uncontrollable intensity, this fact becomes violently true. The human body experiences more of the experiences of life in one month of combat than in an entire lifetime of normal living. Fear, despair, horror, hate, love and passion reach incredible highs and lows as the person is swept along in the swirling violence of war. Each man sees only a small part of the big scene, of course, but this part becomes a very personal thing to him and it is etched into his memory forever -- should he survive.
This then, is my war. The stories that I have tried to put down here for posterity, assuming posterity is interested, are incidents that happened to me personally or to friends and acquaintances in the old Army Air Corps during World War II.
I have taken the liberty of changing the names of some individuals to protect the innocent and the not-so-innocent. Otherwise, these stories are true -- HONEST.

Customer Reviews:
A charming little cookbook........2006-12-05
You may have difficulty getting to the recipes, because Alexandra Kropotkin's narrative is so engaging, you'll want to read it through for all of her insight into pre-Soviet Russian life and manners, especially the life and manners of the upper class. It seems as though Ms. Kropotkin had a not-insignificant position at one point (in fact, the man who wrote the forward calls her "Princess"), and she had to flee to England when the revolution came, and she learned to make traditional Russian meals using the ingredients found wherever she happened to be.
If you focus on the narrative, however, you will miss the fabulous food. The food is all very rich, and none of it is made with pre-prepared over-processed food, but good solid ingredients like milk and eggs and flour, and of course, sour cream and dill and turnips. Though some of the recipes are time-consuming (the 'yellow consomme' used to make cabbage soup simmers for three hours, for example), they are all accessible to cooks with even a little bit of experience. Princess Kropotkin talks you through the recipes like a good friend or a mother might, leading you every step of the way.
Nice book but videos are better.......2005-09-29
Great book with great recipes. But again one can get recipes for free off the internet. Russian cooking videos are the best. There is one that gets sold on EBay which actually demonstrates these techinques.

A Charming and Authentic Book!.......2003-09-08
An American with family members who make regular trips to Ukraine, I have some knowledge of the hearty and delicious cuisine of that wonderful country. I love this book because it presents the cuisine as it actually is in the towns of Ukraine. You are not presented with bastardized, Americanized recipes, but with the authentic cookery you would experience during a visit to a normal, middle class home.
The book starts with a brief foreword on Ukrainian food traditions. In the back there is an 8-page bilingual dictionary of food terms and phrases to use in restaurants. In between, the book is packed with both traditional and contemporary recipes for everything from appetizers to main dishes to sweets and even a substantial section on beverages both alcoholic and not, and recipes for making several different kinds of beer.
I highly recomment this book.
don't waste your time with this one........1999-08-21
Excited to find the best of Ukrainian cuisine won't work with this book unless you're still on a farm in some other decade. Or you like cooking with lard, grinding meat, and of course removing organs and bones from pigs - oh, yum! The author's translations in the back of the book from English to Ukrainian for ordering meals are worth a laugh. However, I think he's serious. Pass this book up.

The Best of Slovak Cooking.......2007-06-11
If the author thinks this is the best of Slovak cooking he has not eaten great Slovak food. Sorry, I consider this book a waste of money.
Good Peasant Food.......2001-10-16
I must disagree with the reviewer from Amsterdam. I think this is quite a good cookbook. Though, if you're expecting Nouvelle Cuisine or modern fusion cooking, you will be disappointed. Slovak cooking is, at its heart, peasant food: hearty, filling, and unsophisticated...but good! Pirohy, dumplings, stuffed cabbages, pork dishes, poppy seed and nut rolls, and mushroom soup flavored with sauerkraut juice take me back to my Slovak grandfather's kitchen (my grandfather used dried wild mushrooms in his soup). My one criticism of the book is that, aside from the brief introduction, it contains no information on the cultural context of the recipes. Some personal anecdotes from the authors, and a bit more on the food traditions of Slovakia would be welcome.
not very good.......2001-08-05
This is not the best cooking book I have ever seen, there are not pictures at all, and some meal might be particular to the authors area in slovakia , the introduction starts with saying from slovak people, which is unknown from my girlfriend who is slovak... When I read this book, I felt like it was written very quickly, it does not seems to be written from someone who got the receipies from his grandmother. However, it gives a good overview of what they eat, I recommend the cabage soup, mnam !!!
A good basic cookbook.......2000-10-18
This is a good cookbook, with very easy to understand recipies with different variations of recipies like goulash, potato soup etc.

Customer Reviews:
Republished as "Cooking from the Caucasus".......2004-06-12
This wonderful cookbook by Sonja Uvezian ("The Cuisine of Armenia" and "Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen") is a true gem. It focuses on the food of the Caucasus Mountains and the former Soviet Republics of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. Even today, after the publication of books by Paula Wolfert and Darra Goldstein, the cuisine of this area is relatively unknown in the United States. That's a shame, because it's truly wonderful, alternately hearty and light, and always full of flavor. The Middle Eastern influences are there, but the combination of ingredients is uniquely Caucasian.
Uvezian does a very good job conveying the pleasures of this cuisine. One of the good things about the cookbook is that she often provides alternative ingredients or ways of spicing a dish. I've cooked a number of recipes from this book, and my one of my all-time favorite chicken recipes, a plain roast chicken with a knock-out walnut sauce, comes from here. Her lamb and fruit stews are good too.
This book was republished in 1976 as "Cooking from the Caucasus." If you see a copy under either title in a used book store, snap it up. You won't regret it.

Book Description
Efe Pygmies is a portrait of an endangered people and place. This volume presents a visual portrayal of the Efe pygmies of the Congo, the world's oldest pure-blooded ethnic group and one of its most remote.
Through this book's photography and text, the world can now discover a way of life that has remained intact for thousands of years deep within the reaches of the Ituri rain forest. This volume reflects the seasonally based life of the Efe: boys and men at hunt, family life in the camps, dancing and music making, and bark and body painting. Providing a unique perspective on a people who have been virtually inaccessible until now and capturing the mysterious, sensual quality of the rain forest itself, this special edition is a unique treasure that sheds unprecedented light on an endangered people and environment.
Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful and Moving Book........2001-01-03
Efe pygmies: Archers of the African Rain Forest is a sumptuously illustrated tome that will long grace my coffee table. The main part of the book - a subtle photographic study depicting the Efe subsisting precariously but harmoniously in the depths of the Ituri forest - is preceded by a brief but fascinating scene-setting section of white-on-black text.
The author presents vivid visual and verbal images of his subjects making baskets, carrying hunting nets, filing their teeth, smoking tobacco, playing music, dispatching a net-caught antelope, touchingly expressing grief at the death of a newborn, and fleeing from their leaf huts into the night beneath a cracking and crashing, lightning-weakened tree.
Skillful, intimate photography makes us yearn for the easy laughter and simplicity of these gentle, peaceful people, yet we are simultaneously made aware of the dangers and discomforts they must constantly face.
It is a fitting tribute to a people as "primitive" and untouched by global culture as any on earth, and the precariousness of their independence. Moreover, it is a compelling and persuasive insight into our own hunting and gathering origins, and the thoughts, feelings, and reactions we all share as part of the human family.
While William Wheeler's book may not lead us to put on treebark loin cloths and chase wildlife through the forest, it is an evocative portrayal of another culture, one that can teach us something about how to live surrounded by danger and dark forces and yet keep on reverentially singing, laughing, and living for the moment.
Although the Efe are clearly too humble and happy a people to bother sending missionaries to us for our edification, this beautiful and moving book affords a glimpse of what such a mission might convey.

Book Description
For centuries, Native people throughout the Arctic regions of the world have depended on seals for their survival. The Inuit and other indigenous people of the Arctic have used seal meat for food, sealskin for clothing, and oil from seal blubber as fuel for light and heat. For these reasons. the seal was the principal prey of the Inuit and the seal hunt lies at the core of traditional Inuit life. In Sacred Hunt, acclaimed writer David Pelly describes all facts of the seal hunt, beginning with the respect for seals underlying the hunt. This respect is reflected in the myths, legends, rituals, and traditions of the Inuit, which include stories about hunters transforming themselves into seals and the practice of offering a killed seal water to drink. Although to southern society this respect may appear to be at odds with hunting seals, to these Native people the two go hand in hand. The centerpiece of the book is a vivid yet sensitive description of the traditional seal hunt. In the depths of winter, Inuit hunters traveled from their igloos across the ice to search for seal breathing holes. A hunter might stand for hours by a breathing hole in 40 degree temperatures, harpoon in hand, waiting for a seal to appear at the hole to take a breath. In spring hunters stalked seals on the ice, using their knowledge of seal behavior to imitate their sounds and movements, gradually creeping up on an unsuspecting seal. In Greenland, and other parts of the Arctic, Native people have hunted seals in kayaks for centuries. Today the Inuit in many communities continue to hunt seals for food. But they rarely use sealskin for clothing, and the international market for sealskin products collapsed in the 1980s as a result of the European Community ban on the import of sealskin. Having lost an important part of their economy, the Inuit are looking for ways to bring new sealskin products to the market. Pelly's lucid and informative text is augmented by exquisite photographs of Inuit sculpture, graphic prints, and tapestries showcasing the importance of Arctic seals in Inuit culture. In addition, archival photographs depict Inuit hunting seals, eating seal meat, and making clothing from sealskin. The result is a provocative and moving portrait of the traditional hunt and of the spiritual link between Inuit and Arctic seals.
Customer Reviews:
Seals and Souls.......2007-07-09
This book is just what the subtitle says - it deals with the relationship between Inuit and seals. Not just the Inuit using the seals as a source of food, fuel and clothing but also as the respect they feel for the seals. They treat the seals, and other animals, as if they have souls and their legends, rituals and traditions reflect that fact. At just over 127 pages, with tons of photos, this is an easy read.
Book Description
This book unveils probably the last and definitely the finest, unpublished piece of the jigsaw making up the now immortal image of Marilyn Monroephotos taken by famous photographer Milton Greene who was Marilyn's artistic advisor, agent, and business partner from 1954 to 1957. It was Greene who, by clever maneuvering, freed Marilyn from the shackles of her contract with Twentieth Century Fox and together with her founded the independent production company "Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc.," which produced the superb Marilyn Monroe films Bus Stop and The Prince and the Showgirl.
The relationship between Marilyn and Milton was always a difficult, but highly fruitful one. It broke down in 1957, when Marilyn's husband Arthur Miller began to take care of her business affairs. Our book, first published in 1994, offers a rich selection of this photographic treasure. Marilyn Monroe never looked as erotic, as elegant, and as stunningly beautiful as she does in these photographs by Milton Greene.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best .......2006-11-23
This is certainly an amazing collection of photographs of Marilyn gleaned from the few years she and Milton Greene collaborated. This teaming of a brilliant photographer with a brilliant subject was perfect. Despite their ill-fated business partnership, the photographs produced transcended the abrupt end of their friendship and some of the most beautiful are showcased in this book. Greene was one of the only photographers to look beyond the movie-star facade of Marilyn and present her other facets - afraid, vulnerable, sad, poignant, and above all more herself than in her studio-produced shots. Although she is not as flawless as in her more glamorous shots, she is just as stunning at ever - if not more so. The highlight of the Greene-Monroe collaboration is the so-called 'Black Sitting', where Marilyn is shot in revealing black lingerie yet appears to be a girl playing dress-up. The only criticism I have is Amy Greene's comments - a touch defensive, evasive, biased, generally unnecessary and offering little real insight into her husband's partnership with Marilyn. Definitely a must-have for any Marilyn fan.
A Great Look.......2006-08-18
This is a great book for the true Marilyn Monroe fan, sort of like having your own personal album of her best photos. Greene captures many sides of Marilyn including sensual, vulnerable, playful, serious, and just plain beautiful in his exceptional photography. Theirs was clearly a special relationship. The accompanying text is not sensational or gossipy like some accounts can be, and reads more like a personal recollection. This book is not a biography or memoir but is all about the photographer and his subject; and it is fabulous.

Customer Reviews:
Learn the nurturing habit now.......2004-01-07
If you're not in the habit of practicing self-care, it's a habit you want to acquire right now -- while you are pregnant -- and this book will teach you exactly how to do it. I read and re-read this book countless times during my pregnancy. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Five stars!
It really is comforting.......2003-09-29
I have come back to this book time and time again during my pregnancy. It really enjoy that it offers a sense of humor and is light-hearted while it also is honest about challenges. It suggests writing assignments and self-nurturing home projects that I never was interested in doing BUT just reading about the common experiences of women was really helpful. Reading this, I never felt alone in what I was feeling.
One of her best.......2003-06-15
I have read a lot of Jennifer Louden's books, and I have to say this is one of my favorites. It speaks to exactly what a woman experiences during pregnancy. Highly recommended.
A wonderful pregnancy companion!.......2001-08-06
The Pregnant Woman's Comfort Book is one of the few pregnancy books out there that addresses the emotional tides a new mother goes through. Yes, it's vitally important to understand the biology of growing a baby, which so many books focus on, but this book has helped keep me sane, grounded, cool, and in love with my daily changing body.
Yuck! Too New Age touchy-feely........2001-07-02
I got this book as a gift -- I surely wouldn't have spent any money on it. It encourages self-absorption, which is never a good thing, and focuses on silly New Age "self-discovery" techniques. I suppose there are always going to be people who eat up this sort of thing, but I for one don't have time for such nonsense. This would be a great gift for a pregnant friend who is into cats, crystals and aromatherapy, but no-nonsense types are not going to like it.

Book Description
Under a Hoodoo Moon is one of rock's most original and infectious autobiographies. In its pages, Dr. John, the alchemist of New Orleans psychedelic funk, tells his story, and what a story it is: of four decades on the road, on the charts, in and out of trouble, but always steeped in the piano-based soulful grind of New Orleans rhythmn amp; blues of which he is the acknolwedged high guru. From childhood as a prodigal prodigy among 1950s legends from Little Richard and Fats Domino to sesssions with the Rolling Stones and the Band; from recording studio to juke joint to penitentiary to world tours; from Mac Rebennack to Dr. John the Night Tripper, this is the testament of our funkiest rock storyteller. Full of wit and wordplay, tales of hoodoo saints and high-living sinners, Under a Hoodoo Moon casts a spell as hard to resist as Mardi Gras itself.

Always the right time and right place for the king of Hoodoo! .......2007-08-23
Dr. John preformed on "Mondaygras" (the day before Fat Tuesday) in a New Orleans warehouse in 1987. On that night he introduced himself to me and several hundred New Orleans revelers. Those in attendance experienced the hoodoo moon and the life of the night tripper. For all others who missed that magical evening, the book, Under A Hoodoo Moon: The Life of the Night Tripper, Dr. John (Mac Rebennack) will make you feel as if you were standing at my side as I permitted the entire life of Dr. John to dance in my blood for that moment in time. The book merely affirms my experience.
I was in college. My dear friend Ruth managed to score some primo tickets. Having lived in New Orleans I knew it would be a special evening. It really did not matter who played. Around midnight and away from the haze of Bourbon Street, New Orleans naturally hums to a rebellious tune. The venue was hot. Crazed girls began to remove their cloths. Eventhough it was an open bar and the liquor was free, bottles of booze mysteriously appeared and were passed from person-to-person bonding us as one in drunkenness. Beads and doubloons rained from clouds of marijuana when the hedonistic frenzy was briefly interrupted by a very large man strolling toward the stage.
It was Dr. John. He needed no introduction. His tangled hair, glassy eyes, weathered skin, and shaman walking stick told their own story. He had sleazed with the dirtiest whores, drank the cheapest liquor, smoked the strongest weed, ate the finest gumbo, and still took joy in thumbing his nose at every law set before his destination. We were his family for that moment.
It is easy to recognize that Dr. John is a good and proud man with an ethos that shakes a soul. Just listen to his cyanne and cured voice. It does not matter what he says. The tones sound like the moon whispering secret knowledge. Dr. John isn't merely a musician spending brain-cells on a binge. He is a warlock.
Under A Hoodoo Moon may never win the Pulitzer Prize, but it tells a story about a remarkable man whose music will haunt your life.

What a life!.......2001-02-21
This book will give you a lot of insight to the wild web woven around and by Mac Rebennack. You'll learn more, and maybe to much, about his life, which will open your eyes to the lyrics he's written over the years and in what mental and physical condition he was in during those times. I've been a fan of Dr. John for as long as I can remember, but this book just amazed me! As much as I though I knew, I was wrong. His love of music got his soul in trouble with drugs and his fans were the ones who benefitted from his pain and suffering. He's grown, learned and bloomed into a clear, clean, insightful man. This book made me cry to think of all he went through to get to where he is today. I am lucky enough to own an autographed first edition. It is one of my most prized posessions. If you love New Orleans, Fonk, Blues, and Swampadelic music you MUST read this book!
Think Twice.......2000-06-23
Want to be a professional musician? Think twice. Dr. John confirms the musician's world as full of addicts, thieves, prostitutes, and swindlers, where almost no one can be trusted. I give the book five stars because it was interesting enough that I finished it, but it's a bittersweet tale of a man who loves music stumbling in a junkie's nightmare. I appreciate his honesty, his sense of humor, his optimism, and his love for music. As an amateur musician who used to contemplate a musical career, I'm glad I opted for a day job and a house in the suburbs. But the story is fascinating. Now I definitely want to check out some of his music.
A gripping tale of a true life music legend........1999-04-29
For anyone who has heard the music of Mac Rebennack a.k.a. Dr. John, this book is essential reading. His unique experiences and his sense of humor make it fascinating to read from beginning to end.
The good doctor's experiences in the music business make a great tale. From his early attachment to some of the New Orleans music greats, through his own experiences in clubs and recording studios, this makes for a terrific insight into what being a musician is all about.
I would highly recommend this book.
Book Description
In the spring of 1944, a group of thirty-two young Palestinian Jews parachuted into Nazi-held Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Their goal was to encourage Jewish resistance where possible and to organize rescue schemes thwarting deportations to the death camps. Linking up in Yugoslavia and impelled by the hope that the Jews trapped in Hungary were still capable of fighting back, some of the volunteers set out for Budapest. Tragically, they were betrayed by their local guides, who turned out to be double agents also working for the Hungarian Fascists. The volunteers reached Budapest where the young woman volunteer, Hannah Szenes, was executed and another deported to a death camp.
Into the Inferno is the remarkable first-hand account of this mission by the only member of the group who miraculously survived from among those who penetrated into Hungary( Phyllis did not add these words until after the jacket copy was approved by her, for reprint) . He endured imprisonment and torture both by the Gestapo and the Hungarian Fascists, escaped from a deportation train, and joined the Zionist youth rescue underground in Budapest. This book, however, is more than a gripping true-adventure story. It tells of people who willingly sacrificed themselves for a cause. Palgi writes movingly of the bonds of comradeship, of the anguish of losing companions-in-arms, and of the inevitably tragic attempt to turn back the tide of the Holocaust. These young freedom fighters, in the words of Israeli professor Yehuda Sluski, became "a link in the chain of Jewish heroism of all generations."

A hero in dark dark times.......2005-09-15
I believe I first read a chapter of this work in a book on Hannah Senesh. I was deeply impressed by the dedication, heroism and decency displayed by Palgi.
In very very lonely times and under the most difficult circumstances there were those people who courageously fought for a better world for the Jewish people and for all mankind.
Palgi was one of them.
