      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The developing creating child .......2006-09-21

Piaget provides a developmental model of human intelligence. He outlines distinct stages beginning with the sensory- motor stage and shows how in each stages the child integrates what has been previously learned in order to expand and develop his powers. Instead of focusing on 'inherent and deterministic drives, or on archetypal eternal patterns, he focuses on capabilities which emerge through interaction between the changing inner world of the child and the world he meets. Piaget puts emphasis on Mankind as a 'creating and constructing creature'.
His writing is complex and often abstract and difficult. But his ideas have been basic to the whole study of child development.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Chef, awesome book.......2005-11-25

I work for Chef Divina, and we make a lot of the dishes from this book in the restaurant. The Wild Rice and Corn Fritters are a huge hit. Also the Huckleberry Sorbet is to die for! He wrote this book with his wife, they also won a James Beard Award for this book as well. This chef is awesome to work with and someone I look up to and hope to be like.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-25

When I bought this book I honestly didn't think I'd ever read it, let alone read the entire thing. But I gave it a try and now I can't put it down. The advice she gives is very helpful and really lets me know what I'm going to have to do when I buy my own horse. This book really opened my eyes and has prepared me for someday becoming an experienced horsehandler. Cheryl Kimball does a wonderful job with this book!

          by Cheryl Kimball
This is a complete book of everything you need to know about horses the best descriptions the easiest reading. Would buy any of Cheryl Kimball's books due to the easy reading content.
Excellant and fully descriptive. My daughter wants to be a horse handler and has had not experience with horses this is a great book that gives a complete guide for beginners.

Excellant service, communication and packaging. Have bought many books and would not hesitate to buy more.

          3 out of 5 stars it's ok..........2006-08-14

When i first got this book i thought it was going to be much better. I thoroughly enjoyed it however. I am 14 years old and when i passed it down to my younger sister (who is 10) to read, she got bored really easily with it. It might be because she is just the type of person who bores easily, but there really is no motavation for someone of her age. there are very little pictures and is not written in a way which younger people understand

4 out of 5 stars Very good guide for caring for a horse.......2004-09-14

This is a good book for the person who doesn't own a horse yet but would like to sometime. It is very complete, going over stuff from hoof anatomy to how to introduce your horse to an electric fence for the first time. However, I think that Horses for Dummies by Audrey Pavia is even MORE complete and I liked that better, but overall this is a very, very good book.

          4 out of 5 stars A pretty good book...........2001-12-16

I think this is a great book for someone who owns a horse. Since I don't yet own one, I found it not as interesting as some horse books. It talks about trailering your horse, what to feed it, ect.... I still enjoyed it though, because I really like reading anything on horses. And someday since I'll be owning a horse someday (I hope!!), I think this book will come in handy. :)

More Quick Rotary Cutter Quilts has several quilts that are distinctive & wonderful to looks at - you will find very few of these patterns in other quilt books. There are sheep quilts, frogs, dinosaurs, butterflies, teapots and hot air balloons as well as more traditional blocks like around the world & the pinwheel. The pictures of the sample quilts are clear & detailed. The cutting and assembly instructions are clear & accurate as well. I would recommend this for any quilter, beginner through advanced, who is inspired by quilts with bright colors, or by non-traditional blocks.

Whenever I buy a quilting book (which isn't very often because many of them are more of the same patterns) I look for the name Pam Bono. Her designs are unique. The instructions are clear and if they are followed, end with a quilt that can be displayed with pride. The blocks use enough variation in technique and color that I am never bored while I am piecing. Thank-you so much for sharing your gift!

5 out of 5 stars Vaux and Olmstead's true masterpiece.......2004-06-10

Long-overlooked because of the size--and Manhattan location--of Central Park, Prospect Park, also by Calvert Vaux and Fredrerick Law Olmstead, is in its own way aesthetically superior. Built for the same reasons as Central Park, Prospect Park was to offer beauty and relief from the congestion that spread across the rapidly growing city of Brooklyn. The neighboring Botanical Garden was to both inspire and educate Brooklynites to the healing power of nature.

"The Complete Illustrated Guidebook to Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden" is one of the first, if not the first, to combine both paradises and provide a practical guide to their beauty. Authors Berenson and deMause provide almost 200 photographs in this volume. More important is the catalog of walking tours and the 100 or so interesting spots you can examine in these urban Edens. So far, I've only explored three of the walking tours and I wasn't disappointed. I look forward to doing the rest of them!

                                    Book Description

When CLERKS opened at cinemas across the country in 1994, it took everyone, especially the film industry, by surprise. Filmed on a shoestring budget after hours at a convenience store, it was crude (in technique and language), realistic and, above all, hilarious. The movie's nationwide success helped launch the indepedent film boom of the 1990s and catapulted its director, Kevin Smith, to full-fledged stardom. Smith's work is explored in AN ASKEW VIEW, the first ever study of his films. John Kenneth Muir examines all of Smith's movies. including MALLRATS, CHASING AMY, and the hugely controversial and variously interpreted DOGMA. Muir discusses Smith's themes and obsessions in depth: his New Jersey boosterism, the cast of characters that pop in and out of all of his films, and the references to STAR WARS and other icons of pop culture. AN ASKEW VIEW is a fascinating and detailed history of the art of this visionary filmmaker, New Jersey's favorite local-boy-makes-good since Bruce Springsteen.

                                    4 out of 5 stars a book-long DVD extra.......2006-09-11

My impression was that this book was very much like a DVD extra, made into book form, and stretched out to fill 214 pages.

It was a fun read for me, since I'm a Kevin Smith fanboy. Tons of behind-the-scenes tidbits, especially about the making of Clerks. It's always interesting to see how someone got their start, and what lessons can be taken from it. There's an interesting irony that, in making a movie about mid-90's slackers, the cast and crew worked insane hours and slept very little for weeks on end.

My only criticism was that the author does tend to get a bit fanboy-ish himself from time to time. Which is all well and good, if an author is excited about his material. However, he tends to over-gush when writing about View Askew films and their receptions.

That being said, I still enjoyed this book a great deal. It takes you into the world of View Askew, and gives it breadth and depth, which then makes the movies themselves more compelling.

5 out of 5 stars If you love the Kevin Smith movies, you will love the book.......2003-08-14

As a fan of the Kevin Smith films, I found this book a great companion to the Kevin Smith Askew-Universe. It offers insight, interviews with the major players, and a great history of the films that we have come to love. You will not be disappointed.

An Askew View: The Films Of Kevin Smith by film and television journalist and expert John Kenneth Muir is an insightful commentary on Kevin Smith's cinematic works that have gone on to achieve a kind of cult-following, including his films: "Clerks," "Chasing Amy," and "Dogma", as well as such efforts as "Mallrats" and the ill-fated "Clerks: the Animated Series" (which was ultimately killed to make room for the then-megahit "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" game show). Interviews with Kevin Smith and other filmmakers form the backbone of this fascinating companion book that is highly recommended reading for students of filmmaking, as well as the legions of Kevin Smith fans.

4 out of 5 stars Great History of View Askew for new Kevin Smith fans.......2002-11-08

When I first heard about this book, I was intrigued. Being a big fan of Kevin Smith and his works, I thought that this book would give a new insight into the man and his genius. Unfortunately, since I am a big fan, I had done my research by reading books like Spike, Mike, Slackers & Dykes plus the hard-to-find Mallrats book published by Kitchen Sink Press. I've also listened to all of the DVD commentaries in addition to going to see Kevin Smith speak in public.

So, I was somewhat disappointed that there was barely any new information included in this book. Not to say that this book was awful, which it is not. The book does a great job of culling all of the information about each movie and breaking it down into easy digestible form with many notated quotes from Kevin Smith and others.

Regrettably, the author sometimes slips his personal feelings when providing the View Askew timeline, which disrupts the flow of the book and loses some of the objectivity of this historian. Also, the author sometimes forces too many similes when referencing Mr. Smith. It almost seems like the author wants to emulate the pop culture wittiness that his subject has been known for.

However, in the day of instantaneous access and easily obtainable information, the task of surprising people with new information is a daunting task, especially when the subject is on someone who uses the Internet as his marketing mouthpiece. But, this book does a great job of staying on track, dishing out colorful stories and giving the reader a wonderful ride through the View Askewinverse.

Andrew Collins and his sister and brother enjoyed a "normal" and happy childhood in Northampton in the 1970s - something he feels hasn't been the focus of enough literature, with the preference being for accounts of sad and depressing childhoods. Hence his decision to write about his childhood. There is quite a bit in this book that I could identify with, despite being somewhat older than the author and having grown up in New Zealand rather than England. Parts of it gave me food for thought - in particular about relationships between parents and children, and grandparents and grandchildren. A shorter account may well have been better with less detail and repetition. In parts this really did drag and I needed to start skim-reading sections to ensure that I didn't give up altogether. I wouldn't particularly recommend it, unless it was to someone who grew up in the same area or at the same time elsewhere in the UK, but neither did I regret reading it.

I bought this book on my way back to Canada from England, I recommend it to anyone from England AND from the seventies.

Youll find your self wrapped up in the goings on and saying "yeah thats right!"

What a superb surprise when my wife brought me this ace book back from her trip to London. My family left Sheffield in the UK in 1981 and I have believed that my childhood spent there in the 1970s was just a figment of my imagination. To find that someone else actually lived like I did during that time has, without any exaggeration, made me re-evaluate those oh-so-normal years. I too have trawled the 70s and 80s websites for obscure references to even more obscure TV shows and sweets, but nothing has so cogently brought the whole experience together like this book. Some of the references that Collins makes are eerily reminiscent of my own youth. To the massive overhaul of my jaw (no-one else wore a brace and had 6 teeth removed and I remember choking on the plaster and washing the crisps from it) to the holidaying at Black Rock Sands (exactly where we went year after year), the whole book was a passport to a past I thought I had forgotten. And here I was thinking I was the only person in the world whose gran knitted Action Man clothing. Good Lord! I remember eating Freddo the Frog bars and I remember those biscuits with sports on the back. My mum and dad tucked me up as well, and now living in a place where almost no-one shares my childhood experiences, I am so grateful for that. The point of Collins' book - that it actually did us no harm, no matter how much we were slaves to media and trends and fishfingers and chips and beans - we did turn out quite normal. What a blast from the past, to use a cliche, and thank you Mr Collins. One day, when I have kids of my own (and I share his point of view on this so I am not holding my breath), I will show them this book and say this is what my childhood was like.

                                        Book Description

Al Alvarez, poet, critic, novelist, sportsman, poker player, has for seventy years been hard to categorize. To many, he is the author of the best-selling study of suicide, The Savage God, which not only described his own attempted suicide but also for the first time in dramatic detail outlined the tortured relationship between Ted Hughes and his wife, Sylvia Plath. What Alvarez wrote about the events leading up to Plath's suicide caused The Savage God to be the subject of enormous controversy as well as outstanding reviews. Here in his memoirs he finally completes his story.

Much of the liveliness of Alvarez's story is inspired by an ambiguous fate of being an English Jew. Although the families of both his parents had been settled in London for more than two centuries and in many ways were more English than the English, being Jewish made them always feel like outsiders, foreigners in their own country. Some of them prospered-his mother's family were to become the owners of one of the largest catering operations in the UK-but that didn't stop them from worrying about their place in the scheme of things. Al Alvarez, only son of his line, has written a wonderfully ironic memoir of his troublesome family inheritance and an intensely funny book. From the opening moments, when his shrewd but absentminded mother interprets Hitler's ranting on the radio as a recipe for a favorite dish, it is packed with amusing anecdotes.

Alvarez was sent to Oundle, an English private school with a strenuous regimen that transformed him from a delicate child into a boxer and rugby player. From there he went on to Oxford, where his literary gifts began to flourish, and an academic career beckoned. But Alvarez chose instead to embark on a life as a freelance writer. His famous anthology The New Poetry scandalized the literary community with its selections-and omissions-yet swiftly became part of the curriculum in schools. As poetry editor of The Observer, he introduced British readers to a host of new writers from America and Central Europe-John Berryman, Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, Zbigniew Herbert, and Miroslav Holub-all of whom became established names in the literary canon. Meanwhile he climbed mountains, played poker, and wrote books about his pastimes that are now regarded as classics. He also wrote a courageous book about divorce and another about his time in the North Sea oil fields.

Alvarez has rarely done what was expected of him, and in echoing his friend Zero Mostel's cry from The Producers for the title of his book he shows his astonishment that, despite his determination to go his own way, he has somehow contrived to live happily ever after. Where Did It All Go Right? is his memorable, irreverent account of that journey.

Has a wonderful command of language, subtle but so witty. Following him on his life journey is interesting because he refuses to be terribly judgmental. No incriminations/ recriminations. Much love in his heart.
