There were four ships in the squadron with the DD658. The other three were given or sold to other countries, but the Colahan was used for target practice off the coast of California. I wish someone someday would find the ship, just to get underwater photos of it. It probably will never happen, I am sorry to say. But for now read about the ship, the squadron and the war itself in "A Fletcher's Story."

Book Description
Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver, children of slaves, overcame seemingly insurmountable barriers to find renown in the fields of education and science. Both men retained strong personalities that occasionally came into conflict. Like iron sharpening iron, their differences served to refine and define their collaborative work. An abiding faith in Christ and sense of divine appointment guided them through a world of dark prejudice with humility and self-confidence. They quietly proved their oppressors wrong and along the way made remarkable discoveries and contributions that have inestimably benefited mankind to this day.Customer Reviews:

At Grandmother's Table: Women Write about Food, Life and the Enduring Bond between Grandmothers and Granddaughters
Ellen Berkeley Manufacturer: Fairview Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 1577491076 |
Amazon.com
Catching the rich scent of sugar cookies baking, the savory aroma of a roasting chicken, or the spicy steam from a pot of borscht transports many of us back to childhood and our seats at our grandmothers' kitchen tables. A unique relationship, bound by family and freed by generations, the bond between grandmother and granddaughter is often forged over creaming butter or shelling peas. At Grandmother's Table celebrates this special friendship with essays and recipes by women remembering the food prepared by and conversations they had with their grandmothers.Adriana Millenaar Brown recalls her grossmutter's soft body and calm eyes during the bombing of Berlin in 1944 and the potato cakes she would make using whatever ingredients she could forage. Nana's Kern (Currant) Teacakes were a staple growing up for Dianne S. Lodge-Peters. She and Nana would drink oolong tea and eat the warm teacakes as Nana told her stories and songs reflecting their ethnic heritages; not until the author was getting her doctorate did she realize Nana's stories were classic medieval folktales. When her mother was angry with her, Lilla M. Waltch's grandmother would comfort her by making Mon (Poppy Seed) Cookies and Waltch could feel "[my] spirits lifting as we beat the eggs and stirred the fragrant mixture."
"This is a book about connections," says editor Ellen Perry Berkeley. "And in connecting across the dividing lines of our own time, we can see our deepest selves reflected in women of very different backgrounds, beliefs, advantages, and pursuits." Often poignant, At Grandmother's Table is filled with the stories of hard-working, loving, difficult, loyal women and the meals they created for their beloved grandchildren. --Dana Van Nest

Decent grab for the Intermediate, Beginners beware though!.......2002-08-23
I found this book to have a lot of information concerning modelling (in general) in it, but lacking in certain techniques that I wish were discussed a bit better (or in addition to).
For one, most basic techniques, like washes, drybrushing, the neccessity of an Airbrush, etc. are not described in much if any detail at all. With that said, this book is more for the intermediate modeller whos looking for some new ways to be a better modeller. BEGINNERS BEWARE! However, compared to Scutt's books (which are worthless IMHO), this book does stand out somewhat better.
This book does contain a good amount of chit-chat, most of it is (to a degree) interesting, but I really wish he could of wrote more on better one's technique. It seems that most modelling techniques are quite easy to explain, but with all the chit-chat, some of the methods are almost vagely "buried". You will have to keep a sharp eye out while reading it to get the technique information. Its there, trust me.
Tony is a big super-detailer (and there are 3 chapters right in a row dedicated to it) and like I said before, he doesn't take the time to explain the basic techniques, within the first 20 pages he dives into etched brass this and individual track links that, making weld seems with your "power tools" (hehe). Some of his methods are quite good, like sticking black-painted pins into the side of the model to form Vinyl tracking to the shape wanted. Again, BEGINNERS BEWARE! This book is for somebody who has a model or two or three under their belt.
The weathering chapter is a really good grab (even to the beginner!) but I wish Tony would of explained in more detail that true weathering is a form of highlighting and shadowing (an artist's technique). If you look at any of Tony's kits, you will immediately notice that his model's are good because he really highlights raised edges and shadows crevices, and is an expert at blending the two. The end result being a REALLY NICE looking model. (To an extent, I think Tony almost overdoes the highlighting :P, but I guess thats what makes it stand out). Tip from me: don't go overkill on pastel chalks when weathering, just enough is almost too much, let the highlighting/shadowing blend be your real aim.
The chatper on Crew Figures, though, is completely worthless. No technique information at all, just some info on Companys that make the figure kits and some pictures of some of the best painted figures in the world (is that really nescessary, Tony!?!?)
Throughout the whole book there are MANY colored pictures to help you along the way. I wish Tony would of maybe put in a chapter for the beginner before diving into his super-detailing methods; I figure that the last chapter, the Gallery, is almost a bit "ego-tistical" in nature... Sure, the models are BEAUTIFULLY done, but you could of put a lot more technique bettering information in place of it, easily (or better yet, added to).
In conclusion, Tony does have a lot of good ideas and points for the Intermediate modeller. I apologize for making this book out to be "bad", but in the end, for what is in the book, the majority of it is positive, but its more for the Intermediate than Beginner. To better help the goods of the book, here is a chapter layout with what is included in each:
1) Tools (5 pgs) - What the expert, Tony Greenland, owns & uses.
2) Reference Material (4 pgs) - Books, pictures, some good advice.
3) Available Models (3 pgs) - Plastic kits, Resin kits, Manufacturers, Etched sets, Decals...
4) Construction & Super-Detailing (12 pgs) - Differences in materials (resin, plastic, etc.), some chit-chat on parts of kits, making bolts, weld seams, claps & buckles, cables... (good ideas, Tony!)
5) Conversion & Scratch-Building (6 pgs) - Measurements, Materials, Joints, Lamination, Construction principals...
6) Specialist Techniques (10 pgs) - Zimmerit, Soldering, Vacu-Forming...
7) Painting, Weathering, & Finishing (25 pgs) - Camoflauge & paints, Insignia/Markings, Finishing techniques (washes, chalks, etc.), Winter camoflauge, etc.
8) Crew Figures (8 pgs) - 1pg of Figure selections, then 7pgs of pictures (no how-to!!)
9) The Collection (46 pgs) - The best works of Tony Greenland.
Hope that helps.
A Perfect Textbook that Needs Some Improvement.......2000-12-13
A cornerstone book on armour modelling.......2000-11-16
Beginning with a chapter on tools the author then touches on references and available models (necessarily out of date now) before going into basic construction techniques and super-detailing. The next chapter is on conversions and scratch-building, chapter six covers specialist techniques and chapter seven painting, weathering and finishing (including three tables of insignia and organisational symbols). Chapter eight is on crew figures. A less-well-known point about this book is that this chapter has figures exclusively by Stefan Müller-Herdemertens possibly the world's most talented painter of 1/35th scale WWII figures with a detailed look at his techniques and some progressive photos. Chapter nine is an extensive gallery of Greenland's scratchbuilt, detailed and superdetailed models all of which show his attention to detail and his unerring dedication to historical accuracy. The book ends with an appendix giving sources for all of the products listed in the text which is a marvellous idea but unfortunately it predates the Internet explosion so no websites are listed.
The author is to be commended for his primary research and contributions to the field and this is an essential part of the library of any serious armour modeller.
There is no mention of groundwork in this book, anyone interested in placing their vehicle in a realistic setting should take a look at "How To Build Dioramas" by Sheperd Paine, Kalmbach Books, ISBN 0-89024-551-7. From basic scenic settings to complex boxed dioramas this book shows you how. Beginners are also recommend to buy Shep's "Modelling Tanks And Military Vehicles", Kalmbach Books, ISBN 0-89024-045-0, a good from-the-ground-up guide.
Also highly recommended is "The Art Of Weathering" by Martyn Welch, Wild Swan Publications, ISBN 1-874103-11-9. Although aimed at the railway modeller, the author has pioneered an amazingly-realistic approach to weathering and this book is responsible for a major shift in armour finishing in the UK.

Modelling Panzer Crewmen of the Heer (Osprey Modelling)
Mark Bannerman Manufacturer: Osprey Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 184603132X Release Date: 2006-09-26 |
Book Description
Adding a figure to a kit or display can increase both depth and interest, yet building and painting figures continues to be a source of frustration to many armour modelers. This book provides full details on how to build and integrate realistic Heer Panzer crew figures with their vehicles, and on how to paint the key uniform variants and patterns worn by these distinctive troops.
It begins with a brief discussion of the various mediums (plastic, resin and white metal), and a round up of the tools, materials and aftermarket items suitable for building and super-detailing figures. Using differing theatres and periods of the war, it shows how to paint common clothing types and patterns, such as the black panzer uniform, Splittermuster, feldgrau, and fatigues, as well as unique and fascinating variants such as Russian camouflage fabric and the motorcycle rubber coat.
Special effects, such as dust-covering, and the addition of equipment and and other details are also covered in clear, step-by-step tutorials. The book will also challenge and inspire the more experienced crew figure modeler, with clearly explained 'kit-bashing' and scratch-building demonstrations, making this a treatment of the subject with wide appeal.

We Adopted a Dusty Miller: One Family's Journey with an Attachment Disorder Child
Phyllis Bosley Manufacturer: Authors Choice Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 059513257X |
Book Description
We Adopted a Dusty Miller is a spellbinding and unusually frank narration of the roller coaster ride parents experience when they love a difficult child and are not successful in finding help. A strong marriage, a supportive family, a sense of humor, a persistent attitude, and the ability, finally, to let go of a heartbreaking situation combine to reveal a picture of the difficult journey many parents endure. The author tells in rapid succession the experiences and feelings that are common to parents of children suffering from Reactive Attachment Disorder, and/or Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Effect. The book describes the behavior usually present in children who are in need of therapeutic care. It provides an argument for the development of wrap-around services for these children and their families, demonstrating the need for community understanding and support. It offers a clear picture of the depth of disturbance that may be present in a child who, to outsiders, seems very charming. Having survived the experience with marriage intact, the Bosleys resolved to offer friendship and encouragement to other families traveling this difficult path in the hope that their daughterÂ's story will not be repeated.Customer Reviews:

Admire These Parents' Tenacity RE: Older Adopted Kid.......2004-05-17
Older adopted kids can be a godsend, as any adopted child can be -- but if they come from troubled, dysfunctional homes, with bad genetics, you are on a collision course to heartache. I bought this book to affirm my own journey with a disturbed teenage girl, who has lived with us for three years, and now is transitioning to a new home. If the disturbed child is a good actor or actress, other adults like sympathetic counselors and teachers will be completely bamboozled. They will assume you're the problem. Charges of false abuse can happen, too. You may feel isolated and alone, especially if you don't have access to superior attachment therapists who see beyond the manipulations of such disturbed children. If you're seen the movie, "Primal Fear," and Edward Norton's performance as the meek, accused murderer, who finally unveils his true calculating self at the end -- that's a disturbed child in a nutshell.
What prospective adoptive parents need to realize, is that emotional and psychological damage within the first three years of life, to a developing, vulnerable baby, can ruin their soul. Neglectful, abusive parenst can do so much damage. Know what you're getting into. Be optimistic, trust God, but buy this first-hand account of what can happen, when the child refuses to attach to a parent. I admire the parents of this story a lot. They kept trying, no matter how hellish it got. Their stories echoed what happened to my family when we tried to help a disturbed child. It is an incredible commitment. Even with all your love, your Herculean efforts to help, to heal, to emotionally connect, unless the adoptive child wants it, it will not happen. I do not mean to be so pessimistic. This book hit a nerve because it sounded a lot like our experiences. Good luck if you're adopting, read a cautionary tale or two, like this one, in addition to the sunny portrayals of life headed toward the sunset. Abide by the cliche, "prepare for the worst, hope for the best."

Maria Callas Remembered: An Intimate Portrait of the Private Callas
Nadia Stancioff Manufacturer: Da Capo ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0306809672 |
Amazon.com
Nadia Stancioff was Maria Callas's friend during the diva's unhappy final years, starting as a publicist for Callas's film of Medea. Interviewing people who had known her earlier, Stancioff sought to explore the woman from the inside--"Maria," not "Callas." Though the result offers no real information we haven't seen before, it is delivered in a personal voice that makes this memoir (first published in 1987) worth reading. There's plenty about Callas's appearance and love life, but the tone is chatty rather than trashy. The events that Stancioff herself was there for were not especially significant (she was present, however, when Onassis paid his first visit to an agitated Callas after his marriage to Jackie Kennedy). More valuable are the stories she hears from colleagues, fans, and the singer's elusive sister. The one subtle, and indeed moving, touch is something the author doesn't do: she declines to resolve the contradictions people tell her. Maria's mother pushed her into singing; it was Maria's own desire. Maria's family was kept in luxury during World War II by her sister's boyfriend; Maria ate out of garbage cans. In the '40s, the Met offered her roles that she turned down; there was no offer. The stories aren't reconciled because Callas can't be: she exists only in the kaleidoscope of other people's impressions. Stancioff's own Maria is a difficult woman--capricious, superhumanly insecure--to whom she is utterly loyal.
The unanswered questions surrounding Callas's death have been discussed elsewhere, such as in Maria Callas: Sacred Monster. As speculated on by the chorus of voices here, the mystery is particularly unsettling. Neither Callas nor, perhaps, anyone who cared about her was in control of what she left behind. It's a sad end to the tale of a tortured woman whose aura is as strong as ever but who was, ultimately, no more knowable than any of us. --David Olivenbaum
Book Description
Never before in paperback: An intimate portrait of the private CallasYears after her death Maria Callas remains one of the most renowned and compelling of all divas. Although much has been written about Callas the prima donna, the consummate stage magician, and the tragic lover of Aristotle Onassis, this is the first account of Maria the woman by someone who was close to her. Stancioff, a longtime friend, shares memories of the Maria who gave impromptu concerts of Beatles hits and Mexican ballads; of the Maria who starved herself to conform to the image of a celebrity but would go into rhapsodies about a plate of pasta. And to her own warm reminiscences, Stancioff adds the insights of Maria's friends, colleagues, and family. The figure that emerges is intriguing, infuriating, mystifying-and endlessly fascinating.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful account of a diva!.......2003-07-29
You must read this as a story of course because the truth we'll never know. Take a read it's worth it for a fan of LA DIVA.
Brava!.......2000-06-02
The author of this amazing book, however, portrayed her good friend, Maria Callas, in what can only be best described as a very objective manner.
One comes away from this book with a very real sense of the person who was Maria Calles, not particularly in the legend that was Calles, the great Diva, the great voice of the 20th Century.
And I found this book to be quite a spellbinder. It was very hard to put it down. My feelings toward the subject ran the gamut from immense like and understanding to immense dislike. I found her at once fascinating and brilliant and on the other hand somewhat stupid. One minute I would think of her as a simple, silly twitt and the next I would find myself thinking of her as a very loving and warm rather intelligent woman. In some instances she was very stingy and other instances she was very giving and generous.
But I think the thing that stood out most to me was the fact that she had suffered from a good deal of betrayal in her lifetime. People had used her and emotionally and abused her. She was also financially used. And I think this made up a good deal of the woman she later became.
Like most people, Maria Callas was neither all good nor all bad. She was neither a saint nor a sinner. What I like about this book was that it gave her dignity and it gives the reader a feel for who the real Maria Callas was. Although it's written by a dear friend, someone who obviously thought highly of her, the author was nonetheless very objective in writing the accounts of Maria's life. She also told of the darker side of Maria Callas. But she did not use her own words entirely. In fact, she went to a great deal of trouble to interview other people who knew Maria well and many of them had very differing views from those of others who were interviewed.
So in the end the reader is left to draw his or her own conclusion about the type person Maria Callas was. I personally came away with a feeling of being quite touched by her life. I felt that she had suffered greatly, although she had indeed brought a lot of on herself, as we all do. I found her a very human person and quite different from the legend that we know as Callas.
There is no question that Calles, the legend, was the greatest soprano of the 20th century. She was the divas diva. The living up to the legend must have been very difficult indeed. And we find in this book an idea just how hard it was.
If you want a history of the career of Callas this is not the book you want to read. If you want what I believe to be a very factual and objective rendition of what her life as a woman was, this book has no equal.
And while you will get glimpses of the glamorous life of the diva, you'll also be able to feel the crashing reality of loneliness that was at the depth and center of the person behind the great diva, Maria.

Maria Callas: An Intimate Biography
Anne Edwards ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: B0001PBXL4 |
Amazon.com
Anne Edwards has made a career out of writing intelligent biographies of prominent women, from the tortured (Vivien Leigh, Judy Garland) to the indomitable (Katharine Hepburn, Shirley Temple). Her gift for vivid characterization and lively narrative is once again in evidence in this readable portrait of opera's revolutionary diva, Maria Callas (1923-77).Edwards doesn't add anything new to the well-known story of Callas' tumultuous life, and she disagrees with Nicholas Gage's controversial assertion (in the book Greek Fire) that Callas bore Aristotle Onassis a son who died shortly after his birth in 1960. But the author lays out the familiar facts deftly, nailing each of the forceful personalities who shaped Callas' destiny, from the obsessively ambitious mother who pushed her into performing and denied her a childhood to Onassis, the great love of her life, who broke her heart after a nine-year affair when he married Jacqueline Kennedy. Most forceful of all is Callas herself, who transformed opera with the revelation that great singing became even greater when buttressed by great acting.
Callas' fanatical devotion to the libretto, her deep understanding of character, and her incomparable musicianship get as much attention from Edwards as her famous feuds (most notably with Renata Tebaldi), the diet that transformed her into a sex symbol, and the notorious cancellations that occurred with increasing frequency to match the worsening of her vocal problems, which eventually forced her retirement from performing. The result is an exemplary popular biography that judiciously balances juicy anecdotes with critical commentary, giving the general reader a colorful, poignant portrait of Maria Callas the woman without ever losing sight of Callas the visionary artist. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Maria Callas continues to mesmerize us twenty years after her death, not only because she was indisputably the greatest opera diva of the 20th century, but also because both her life and death were shrouded in a Machiavellian web of scandal, mystery and deception. Now Anne Edwards, well known for her revealing and insightful biographies of some of the world's most noted women, tells the intimate story of Maria Callas-her loves, her life, and her music, revealing the true woman behind the headlines, gossip and speculation. The second daughter of Greek immigrant parents, Maria found herself in the grasp of an overwhelmingly ambitious mother who took her away from her native New York and the father she loved, to a Greece on the eve of the Second World War. From there, we learn of the hardships, loves and triumphs Maria experienced in her professional and personal life. We are introduced to the men who marked Callas forever-Luchino Visconti, the brilliant homosexual director who she loved hopelessly, Giovanni Battista Meneghini, the husband thirty years her senior who used her for his own ambitions, as had her mother, and Aristotle Onassis, who put an end to their historic love affair by discarding her for the widowed Jacqueline Kennedy. Throughout her life, Callas waged a constant battle with her weight, a battle she eventually won, transforming herself from an ugly duckling into the slim and glamorous diva who transformed opera forever, whose recordings are legend, and whose life is the stuff of which tabloids are made.Anne Edwards goes deeper than previous biographies of Maria Callas have dared. She draws upon intensive research to refute the story of Callas's "mystery child" by Onassis, and she reveals the true circumstances of the years preceding Callas's death, including the deception perpetrated by her close and trusted friend. As in her portraits of other brilliant, star-crossed women, Edwards brings Maria Callas-the intimate Callas-alive. AUTHORBIO: Anne Edwards, hailed as "the queen of biography" (Kirkus Reviews), is the author of many bestselling biographies, including Ever After: Diana and the Life She Led, Katharine Hepburn: A Remarkable Woman, and Matriarch: Queen Mary and the House of Windsor. She is known for her meticulous research and ability to portray her subjects with passion and sympathy. She has also written biographies of Vivien Leigh, Margaret Mitchell, and Sonya, Countess Tolstoy. She currently lives in Beverly Hills, California.Customer Reviews:

Actress Of The Opera: The Life Of Maria Callas.......2004-02-05
Maria Callas was born in Greece. Throughout her life, though she adopted American culture and nuances (even becoming a staunch follower of Audrey Hepburn's supermodel glamour)she remained innately Greek. Her passion, her fire and her temperament was all expressive of her Greek blood. Yes, she was infamous for her diva attitude (and this was before Diana Ross) and she was even known to have struck a reporter/paparazzi when he dared to get her in business, but we like our Maria Callas that way. Can you imagine how uninspired her performances at the opera would have been had she not been a strong woman ? It is her intensity that most attracts us to the great Maria Callas.
Never was her Greek soul more pronounced than in her opera performances. This is why people overlooked her flaws- Maria Callas had faults in her voice (at times her tessitura and dramatic vocals can sound too harsh and scratchy,at times her chest voice was so deep she sounded like a man). One can also comment on the fact that she sang only in Italian, never bothering to expand her repertoire into the German operas of Wagner, Mozart or the French operas of Massenet, Bizet, etc. When she sang Carmen, which was written in French, she sang in Italian and she mostly sang Italian versions of otherwise French or German operas. She overcame these issues by truly delivering drama, acting, for she knew that opera was as much about acting as it was about singing. She reigned supreme in the role of Bellini's Norma, caused a great sensation in the fiery roles of Puccini's Tosca, Turandot, La Vestale and most notably as Medea. For Medea, she appeared in one film version, her only film work she ever did. She was said to be the most acclaimed Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata, the best Lucia of the Donizetti opera, and the best Madam Butterfly. Working with Maria Callas might have proved difficult. She was extremely dedicated but egotistical. Somehow, she managed to work with other such big egos as conduct Herbert Von Karajan and tenors Franco Corelli and John Vickers.
Maria's opera performances were a blaze of glory, but all good things come to an end. Eventually, her voice wore thin. By the 70's she was not performing with dynamic frequency if she was performing at all. She was in her 50's when she died, in a luxurious apartment in Paris. She had been addicted to sleeping pills since she had always been a nocturnal woman and had trouble sleeping at night. Contrary to the popular legend, Callas did not die of a broken heart when her last husband millionaire Onaissis divorced her to marry Jackie Kennedy. She was a strong woman who would not pine for a man she loved for very long. She had just simply become tired of life and was decidely single but proud in the last years of her life. And she had reason to be. She had lived quite a life. Behind her was a career in opera that many sopranos still envy
Dont Waste Your Time.......2004-02-05
The book reads like a Harlequin Romance version of Callas' life, with breathless, overwritten prose that runs the gamut from annoying to sick-making. Worst of all is the endless stream of factual inaccuracies, many of them real howlers, which expose not only the shoddy research and editing but also the author's embarassing ignorance of matters operatic.
I'm giving this book one star because I have to in order to publish this review. But if I had the option, I would not give it any at all.
Don't waste your time or money on this turkey.
