Book Description
Several of my family have inquired, "How can you remember everything you have written in your book?" To begin with, I kept a diary or journal during the three years, nine months while in the service. In addition, I wrote nine pages in a tablet of my experiences going overseas. I wrote fifteen pages while on furlough at the mission station in India. I wrote six large pages when I planted a garden in China. All or most all of my Army transfer documents and records are still intact. I have numerous booklets, pamphlets, letters, and artifacts I picked up along the way. I bought a camera when I first arrived in India, a 1921 vintage, which allowed me to have many, many photographs.

"How in the world have I survived all the broken heart attacks, whacks and setbacks?" asks country music superstar Naomi Judd. Her answers are found in Naomi's Breakthrough Guide, a description of 20 choices that helped her overturn the "death sentence" of a diagnosis of hepatitis C. In a buoyant supportive voice, Judd interprets mind-body research about healing in her own terms. This creates a foundation for her two central ideas: Our predicaments are the result of our choices. The way we choose to react to what happens to us (whether a life-threatening illness, an addiction, or an unhealthy relationship) allows us to "find the sacred meaning of everything that happens to us." Judd's personal stories are, by turns, charming, feisty and insightful. But she has also done her homework to create a portrait of the "survivor personality." She uses birth-order studies to talk about family conflict and neurochemistry research to explain the role of emotions in building a healthy immune system. Judd explores goal setting, money managing, risk taking, healthy eating and loving relationships with her change-your-mind-to-change-your-world approach. The dark side of her optimism is the arguable contrast of victim/volunteer: implying that we are wholly responsible for our illness and recovery. In addition, few readers will have a superstar's resources (including access to physicians and the love and songs of thousands of fans). But Judd's generous gifts of knowledge and wise kindness offer many treasures. --Barbara Mackoff

Like the big sister I never had.......2007-05-18
Naomi has such a casual and fluid writing style. She's intelligent, witty, and down-to-earth. She doesn't try to tell you what to do or how to think...she just shares her experiences and insights and invites you to take from her what you will. She's like a big sister telling you stories with all kinds of advice and morals tucked inside but you don't mind because you know she just wants what's best for you.
True to It's Title.......2006-01-10
Keep a pad and pen nearby, because you will want to jot down some thoughts and ideas. Naomi has taken a series of interesting life experiences, and a life threatening illness, and distilled from it, a group of principles which she is now sharing. She has some interesting interesting insights, pointed suggestions, and principles which can bring healing to change lives. I read it a chapter a day, sort of like a devotion or study. Each day gives interesting point, and some suggestions to place into practice. More than worth the price charged.
Wisdom and Knowledge.......2004-11-06
Naomi Judd's book combines her life stories with wisdom and knowledge she has gained along the way. I found the book very inspiring.
For example, she tells a story of when she first moved to Los Angeles she was so bad off that she lived in a horrible motel. Then as she was on her way to an awards show, she drove passed this same motel while in her limo. She uses stories like these to inspire her readers to strive for a better life.
The book is filled with wisdom, wit and knowlege. It would be great reading material for someone who wants to better their life and move forward.
Entertaining, Inspiring, and Highly Practical.......2004-10-11
Naomi's Breakthrough Guide is one of the most engaging, inspirational --and useful -- personal development books I've read in twenty five years. I found it to be one of those rare books that truly is hard to put down. In fact, I ended up reading it in one day (and will be returning to do more of the exercises).
If you value the following, you'll love this book:
· Stories that are both entertaining and full of important lessons. You'll find poignant, inspirational, and amusing stories that make this "how to" book read more like a page turner novel.
·Practical suggestions for creating the life you want, from someone who has done just that.
· Scientific research citations that add credibility and substance to the author's ideas, and offer the reader resources for further exploration into topics that interest them.
· Exercises and questions that provide practical structure for those who want to apply Ms. Judd's ideas in their own lives.
· An encouraging, non-elitist "I'm just a regular person like you" style that doesn't sound like one of the many "experts" who writes from a position of superiority, but instead humbly shares the wisdom they've learned from the School of Hard Knocks.
Even if you've read many personal growth books, Naomi's take on principles and practices you're familiar with can bring you to a deeper recognition of their importance in your life and a more honest appraisal of whether you're applying them. She frames a wide range of issues, including mindfulness, meditation, forgiveness, and risk taking, in such an engaging and supportively challenging way, you'll find yourself thinking about them with a fresh, more personalized perspective. Naomi's thought provoking questions and exercises will challenge anyone serious about living a more fulfilling life to go beyond the "Oh, I know that" perspective to the more life changing stance of asking "Am I doing that?" and "How will I act on that?"
Finally, Naomi Judd's stories of her difficult early years prior to becoming a music superstar offer hope and inspiration to anyone wondering whether they can live the kind of life they dream about - or have long since given up on. They remind the reader that Ms. Judd's success didn't just happen. She wasn't "discovered." She overcame difficult life circumstances that many would have taken as proof their life could never be better. Reading about that part of her life can't help but make you think "If she can overcome those circumstances by doing what she is suggesting in this book, there's no reason why I can't create the kind of life I want." You just can't help being inspired by Naomi's example of courage, determination, and optimism. You'll also find her sense of humor, ability to turn a phrase, and story-telling skill makes this book a delightful reading experience.
Do yourself a favor and get Naomi's Breakthrough Guide. Do the special people in your life a favor and give them a copy. It's a simple way to bring more good into the world and into the lives of the people you love.
Money Well Spent.......2004-09-27
I borrowed this book from the library and liked it so much, I went and bought a copy for myself. Naomi is full of wit, wisdom, and humor that I found reading the book was actually hard to put down and not a chore to read. This is a book you will want to keep near by for quick "pick-me-ups".

Tasty home cooking.......2006-11-29
I'm a native Mainer, and these recipes result in the delicious dinner standards I grew up with. Every time I want to serve a great meal, I turn to this book first. The recipes are well-explained, the ingredients are easy to find, and the anecdotes are great- be sure to read the funny forward to the excellent Anadama Bread.
Memories and Tastes of Home.......2000-11-25
When my grandmother died, I was the lucky recipient of "her "secret recipes."(Cooking Down East : Favorite Maine Recipes and Keep Cooking the Maine Way).
Everytime I make the Melt in Your Mouth Blueberry Cake, the Fish Chowder or the Lobster Newburg (the fancy one--of course!), I am momentarily returned to my childhood.
The Red Flannel Hash is pretty terrific, too.
At last count, I had 273 cookbooks in my private collection, but these two are the ones I most often return to when I wish a taste of home. Unlike many others, they seem to spend a majority of the time on my kitchen counter, permanently dusted with flour, stained forever with tiny Maine blueberries.
If you are looking for nothing fancy-schmancy, only exemplary "home-style cooking," then these are the best you will ever find.
Thanks Nanny (and thanks Ms. Standish)
I haven't found anything in this book my family didn't like!.......1999-05-26
My first edition of this book was given to me by my husband 26 years ago. I have many fond memories of family dinners, deserts and favourite recipes from this book. To me it is a touch of home. Gloria Legere Mainiac in Exile in Washington State.
It's a regional standard........1999-03-10
Though Ms. Standish's emphasis is on the great state of Maine, cooks from all over New England will recognize the regional recipes in this book as their own. To me, "Cooking Down East" is more than just a cookbook; it is, in written form, how I learned to cook from my mother and grandmother.
The best cookbook always........1998-11-28
I grew up with this book and Ms. Standishs other Keep cooking the Maine way. Absolutely the best book. Good simple food and easy to follow. I love it!

A lavish book offering step-by-step instructions for creating herbal-scented pillows for custom-made dreams.
Customer Reviews:
beautiful.......2006-01-08
I give this book four stars because of the beautiful artwork and wonderful recipes. Very beautifully illustrated and simple to follow. However I have one complaint: most of the herbal recipes call for mugwort which I cannot find. I haven't yet tried any of the recipes in here because of that but in my opnion it is very original and definitely a keeper.
Making Herbal Dream Pillows.......2005-07-13
Wonderful book! Jim Long has done alot of research into the origins of the pillows. Very informative compact book.
Not bad, not great.......2004-05-22
The recipes for making herbal pillows are good. However, the book only gives you one instruction for sewing a pillow. I guess I was hoping for more than one style.
Making Herbal Dream Pillows.......2004-05-04
We had to read a "how to"book for a reading project.Make the item and present a "book report".I found the book very interesting and easy to follow. The blends were simple to make, tho I did have some trouble finding all the herbs I needed for my pillow.I will be presenting my project to my class at the end of this week.
Just what I ws looking for!.......2003-11-08
This book was exactly what I'd been looking for! It has lots and lots of recipes, segmented by 8 different types of blends:
Stress-reducing relaxng dream blends (5)
Pleasant dream blends (2)
Romantiv Dream blends (4)
Creative dream blend (1)
Traveling dream blends (2)
Great outdoors blend (1)
Holiday blend (1)
Prophecy blend (1)
In the beginniong there are instructions on how to make a blend (selecting flowers, preparing them etc) as well as a section on making the pillow - its very easy - make a small bag, put in the blend then sew up the other end. I'm going to lok for really pretty fabrics that match the type of blend I'm putting in. one thing I find interesting is that there are no essential oils used -the author doesn't recommend them saying that they're too unpredictable and can create unpleasant dreams if they turn.
The recipes all have info about the specific flowers being used, and info on if the belnd was an ancient formula or what the source was. Its pretty cool. The book itself is beautiful - lots of wonderful drwings/colors - quite dreamy in itself.
I highly recommend this book - lots of fun!

Book Description
Professional landscapers and all those involved in creating green spaces have long been in need of a book that is a guide to plant specification, but also makes sense of plants and their cultivation.
Plant User Handbook is for practitioners who are professionally engaged in the use of plants in public, commercial and institutional landscapes. Planting schemes are undertaken on the basis of a binding contract - generally between the client (who owns or leases the landscape) and the implementer (the landscape contractor), with the designer acting both as specifier and contract administrator. Within this contractual relationship, planting schemes must be implemented to an agreed timetable. To manage this procedure efficiently, landscape designers and managers need quick access to the factual and scientific background for practical planting design and its implementation through specification writing and contracts.
The book covers over 20 well defined topics, and is written by leading experts in the industry. It is arranged into five sections:
Preliminaries to plant use and the landscape Managing plant growth on landscape sites Establishment and management of trees Establishment and management of smaller woody plants Establishment and management of herbaceous plants Carefully illustrated with diagrams, black and white photographs and colour plates, this handbook provides a unique resource for professionals wanting to improve their specification skills, as well as to explore creative approaches to design and practical implementation.

Highly Recommended .......2007-02-01
I highly recommend this book for clarity, good sensical advice, and widespread usefulness to counteract prevailing inadequate, ineffective and harmful disciplinary practices. It is simple, clear, highly readable, directly applicable and of practical usefullness to 90% of parents who are having difficulty with their preschool and elementary school age children.
Great book on discipling your child.......2007-01-12
This is a great book! It really gives you some get ideas for discipling your child without spanking.
New 3rd Edition of SOS Help For Parents.......2006-03-01
I have a new 3rd edition of SOS which has a new ISBN of 0935111212. You can only find it at Amazon if you put in the new number. It is so easy to read and understand and you will see amazing changes in your child's behavior right away. The new SOS makes a great gift for parents with young children.
Reactions of a teacher, mother of two sons, and wife of the author .......2006-02-27
This 3rd edition is now available on Amazon with an ISBN number of 0935111212. The part of SOS that I like best is the `Index of Solutions to 46 Behavior Problems.' Parents are busy people and it's easy to find a section dealing with a particular behavior problem such as tantrums without reading the whole book. I have used most of the SOS solutions in my elementary classroom, with my two sons, and with preschoolers when I taught preschool. These methods work!
Some of my favorite parts are: Index of Solutions to 46 Behavior Problems, handling tantrums and aggressive behavior, time-out for toys that misbehave, and avoiding 9 common errors when using time-out.
Some of my 5th graders actually took the book home to persuade their parents to use its methods with younger siblings. My 5th graders especially liked seeing their parents successfully use SOS methods with their younger brothers and sisters and telling me about it.
I am proud that SOS is in eight languages. At conferences, I have talked with foreign mental health professionals who have told me there is such a need for this parenting book and how grateful they are to find it in their language.
Excellent.......2005-06-24
I am a bit partial, as I had DR.Clark for classes, but this book is wonderful. Not having children at the time I first read it, I thought it was a little much. Now I have two of my own and I refer back to it often!
Book Description
How did George W. Bush-a man of little political experience, little policy know-how, and no clear positions on national issues-become President? How, in the midst of national economic freefall, did the Republicans win complete control of Congress in the 2002 midterm elections? Political insiders credit Karl Rove, a brilliant political consultant and tactician who Bush calls "Boy Genius." Where did Rove come from and how has he engineered his candidates' victories? Even more important, what does he want? In Boy Genius, two seasoned political reporters who know Rove from his many, fruitfully manipulative years as a political consultant in Texas and a nationally known White House correspondent fill readers in on the man and his methods. From running a dirty tricks school and bugging his own office, to masterminding the defeat of popular Governor Ann Richards in Texas, to seeing and harnessing the potential in George W. Bush ("Political hacks like me wait a lifetime for a guy like this to come along," Rove said of the future President), to the master plan for the 2002 elections, Dubose, Reid and Cannon detail Rove's ascendancy to the top of our national political life, illuminating along the way both the dirty underside of politics and Rove's vision for who should be governing our country and how. Boy Genius is a fascinating, entertaining look at the political life of the Man Who Would Be Kingmaker-and a disconcerting expose about exactly how American politics works.
Customer Reviews:
Still relevant.......2004-10-22
This book is particularly relevant concerning the current election and how things are done in this White House. It is difficult to believe someone with Karl Rove's track record is a close presidential advisor, and it says a good deal about a president who chooses a confidant who has exercised the techniques Rove has used.
Rove is scary.......2004-06-15
After reading the book "Boy Genuis" I have came to the conclusion that it is a bad thing that John Kerry is leading in the polls. Rove will go dirty fast because he simply hates to lose. HE has transformed Texas into what he hopes America will become, an unabashed Republican stronghold. His pandering to the religous right by being the liason between the White House and those groups is so laughable considering Rove himself has said religion is unimportant to him. That may be true except on one day every four years, on that day, his role as the Republican party's greatest asset comes in handy. Rove knows that economic conservatives and moral conservatives despise what they "perceive" the Democratic Party stands for: big government, tax hikes, loose morals, diversity, and weak foreign policy. Karl Rove has exploited these perceptions with a "whatever it takes" mentality. He blew through the streets of Austin leaving only like minded conservatives in his wake. He has been in Washington for almost four years, four more and the divide and hate in this country will reach a fevered pitch. Lets hope Nixon and Lee Atwater won't be proud this election cycle. After reading this book, I'm sure they will though.
The Best and The Scummiest.......2004-02-04
Every human endeavor has its masters. There are leading physicists, writers, teachers, architects, carpenters and chefs.
The demi-monde also has its corp of top pick-pockets, pimps, snitches and flimflammers. It is to this latter list that we can write the name of Karl Rove. His talents add nothing useful to the world; to the contrary, he and his cabal of mayberry machiavellians' efforts are directed toward finding people's weaknesses and exploiting them, tearing down peoples lives and putting any skeletons on public display, so that "their" guy might win. "Boy Genius" depicts the political career of Karl Rove, how he honed his skill and applied them to the benefit of conservative Republicans and especially to George W. Bush.
The authors do give some background information on Rove and briefly describe how he came to embrace right-wing politics.
As a young man, he is described as a "nerd" and one can well imagine that he was the boy who gotten beaten up on the playground at school. But no thorough psychological profiles are hazarded in this work. We learn only that Rove is a rather emotionless person. The authors offer a couple of "Oprah moments" that hint that their subject might harbor some modicum
of humanity. Despite a couple of these excursions into sentimentality, Dubose et al. stick mostly to the political highlights that mark Rove's life. And that is just as well, because we intuit that if we extracted the electoral machinations from this biography, there would be almost nothing left.
But reading this book reveals as much about we Americans and our times as it does about Rove. We would hope to be titilated by some of Rove's underhanded schemes to win elections, but instead find ourselves rather bored with the enterprise. We are used to this sort of dirty dealing and know that both major parties engage in these activities. It's old hat. Karl Rove just happens to be the best and the scummiest at the game that goes on all the time. The victors in political affairs are not those who present the best ideas but rather those who know how to manipulate through the electronic media. We are given in this book an introduction to the Cardinal Richelieu of the Nouveau Regime, Karl Rove.
This is an excellent primer.......2003-09-13
This is an excellent primer to the illustrious career of "Bush's Brain" as he is called. Of the two books presently popular ("Bush's Brain" is the other) this is the more balanced and thorough; indeed, it often times seems that the authors of Bush's Brain had used this for their source, and there is very little information in that book that is not in here. Don't bother to read both, if you're just looking for an introduction to the subject. A careful portrait of the crafty man that learned his tricks (and even instructed others in the same) during the time of "Tricky Dick" Nixon himself. Must read if you are at all interested in learning how Bush Jr. got to the oval office and why all the "big money" lined up behind him as miraculously early as it did.
Best political book I've read this year.......2003-07-07
I found "Boy Genius" to be insightful, compelling and humorous. The book is written by three journalists, two of whom followed Karl Rove throughout his days in Texas and a third who writes for the National Journal. The outline of the book is a chronological history of the campaigns and administrations Rove has managed or contributed to. The book is full of interesting antecdotes that really give you an idea of what Rove is all about and his motivations for the directions in which he takes his advisees. Most importantly, after reading this book I would describe Karl Rove as a winner, which makes this an interesting read no matter what your politics.
Two things the potential reader should know are 1) the majority of the book is about Texas politics and Rove's work in that state, and 2) the authors demonstrate definite left leanings in their storytelling, although it mainly shows through in their humor and when they point out the irony that George W. Bush never fails to provide for them. These caveats are fairly minor, I think most political readers will enjoy this one.
Book Description
In her own day, Ana Pauker was named "The Most Powerful Woman in the World" by Time magazine. Today, when she is remembered at all, she is thought of as the puppet of Soviet communism in Romania, blindly enforcing the most brutal and repressive Stalinist regime. Robert Levy's new biography changes the picture dramatically, revealing a woman of remarkable strength, dominated by conflict and contradiction far more than by dogmatism. Telling the story of Pauker's youth in an increasingly anti-Semitic environment, her commitment to a revolutionary career, and her rise in the Romanian Communist movement, Levy makes no attempt to whitewash Pauker's life and actions, but rather explores every contour of the complicated persona he found expressed in masses of newly accessible archival documents.
Customer Reviews:
Explosive and Compelling.......2004-03-26
"Ana Pauker" is an excellent and compelling account that blows old notions of East European communists out of the water. While not glossing over Ana Pauker's serious delusions and often cynical compromises, Robert Levy convincingly demonstrates that Pauker was remarkably resistant to Soviet dictates during the most perilous period of Stalin's reign. Meticulously documented with a massive amount of archival documents and interviews of participants and eye-witnesses, this wonderfully written book is a must-read for anyone interested in communist and East European Jewish history.
Explosive and Informative.......2004-03-26
"Ana Pauker" is an excellent and compelling biography that blows old notions about East European communists out of the water. While hardly glossing over Ana Pauker's serious delusions and often cynical compromises, Robert Levy meticulously and convincingly demonstrates that Pauker was remarkably resistant to Soviet dictates during the most perilous years of Stalin's reign. This is a fascinating, well-written account based on recently unearthed communist archives and personal interviews of participants and eye-witnesses. Anyone interested in communist history or contemporary East European Jewish history will find this book utterly informative.
A lucid cut in the political life of Ana Pauker.......2004-02-11
This is a sound and wise biography of Ana Pauker. An exceptional volume. An examination of the Romanian communist system and its leaders was long due--beyond false anxieties. And Levy does it so superbly, blending history with years of archival and interview-based research. A lucid cut in the political life of a controversial Romanian communist leader, Ana Pauker.
from a.......2003-10-20
Sorry, no arguments will convince me to relativize the following fact: at the time of her political activity, Ana Pauker had to know the criminal (genocidal, to be accurate) nature of the political party she was a leader of. My mother still cringes when she remembers the slogan "Ana Pauker si cu Dej - baga spaima in burgeji" (Ana Pauker and [Gheorghiu] Dej scare the bourgeois) cried out at forced mass rallies. The "bourgeois" mentioned in this aggresive rhime had reasons to be scared of Pauker. Hundreds of thousands Romanians are estimated to have been emprisoned for political reasons, thousands of them tortured and killed, burried without a grave. Pauker believed she can "change things from inside?". Would _you_ join the Nazi party (for example) to improve its ethics???
