      Book Description

The third volume of this widely acclaimed series reveals the breath-taking intensity, intellectual acumen, and vast self-confidence of twenty-nine-year-old Thomas Edison. In the depths of the 1870s depression, he moved his independent research and development laboratory from industrial Newark to pastoral Menlo Park, some fifteen miles to the south on the main line of the railroad from New York to Philadelphia. There, equipped with resources for experimental development that were extraordinary for their time, Edison and a few close associates began twenty months of research that expanded their well-established accomplishments in telegraphy into pioneering work on the telephone. Edison's ideas and techniques from telegraph message recording and the telephone next led to his invention of the phonograph, the first patent for which was filed in December 1877. This invention ultimately gave Edison a world-wide reputation--and the nickname "the wizard of Menlo Park."

Praise for previous volumes of The Papers of Thomas A. Edison:

"The essence of the volume is Edison's technical notebooks, a window onto the inventor's workshop. His lucidity comes through everywhere... His writing and drawing come together as a single, vigorous thought process."--Russell McCormmach, New York Times.

"A mine of material... Scrupulously edited... No one could ask for more... A choplicking feast for Edison biographers--well into the next century, and perhaps beyond."--Fred Howard, Washington Post.

"A triumph of the bookmaker's art, with splendidly arranged illustrations, essential background information, and cautionary reminders of the common sources on which Edison's imagination drew."--David Joravsky, New York Review of Books.

"In the pages of this volume Edison the man, his work, and his times come alive... A delight to browse through or to read carefully."--Thomas J. Misa, Science.

        Book Description

In recent years hospice care has gone from a little-known medical alternative to a major movement in health care that has played a leading role in the lives of over 200,000 people. By emphasizing palliative care and pain management rather than curative treatment, hospices allow the terminally ill to spend the last days, week, or months of their lives in their own homes, cared for by their families under the supervision of a team of specially trained hospice workers that includes doctors, nurses, social workers, and volunteers. The Hospice Handbook assures us that the terminally ill do have options, and the quality of their lives can still be within their control.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Cool book.......2006-02-22

Very neat book-- it is like an encyclopedia for messing up food!!! It has a ton of good info in there, and you can actually read it just for fun, theres some funny stuff in there.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Witty.......2005-09-26

I thought this book was filled with witty and creative ideas for repairing food. I also learned a few new "tricks".
        Every house should have one.

5 out of 5 stars Very silly but truly valuable.......2003-05-26

This book probably appeals most to two kinds of people: those who don't cook and therefore are stuck when the recipe in BH&G doesn't pan out they way they expected, and the typical Alton Brown kitchen science person who not only has I'm Just Here for the Food but Cookwise, Kitchen Science, the complete Best Recipe series, and a sufficiently warped sense of humor to be rolling on the floor on each and every page of Kitchen Confidential. Pity that, because it's good for far more than just those two groups.

This book is really about crunch-time creativity (especially when the crunchy stuff is stuff that shouldn't be crunching). The sense of humor in the book is a bit dotty and (Julia) Childish, but it really goes out of its way to portray cooking disasters as something not to cry over, and even tells the rather sad story of the chef François Vatel and his suicide over a misunderstood fish order to make its point. It's not a book for culinary purists -- creative uses abound of convenience foods that most wannabe master chefs wouldn't normally touch -- but keep in mind the best section of your average church/school/community cookbook is probably the section on hints, tips, and substitutions, and remember that this is a whole book of that kind of thing. It's the culinary equivalent of a hospital crash cart.

Someone else said that this is something you will need mainly in emergencies. Well, that's pretty much true, but it's still a good book to pull off the shelf and just read, both for the information and the jokes. It also has the bonus of including a complete (rather sophisticated) meal made entirely with "spare parts" ingredients and instructions on dealing with balky equipment. Good stuff, and should be on every cook's bookshelf, not just the ones who need it most.

1 out of 5 stars This book was awful.......2003-05-20

...This was badly constructed and a total waste of money. I read it in a few hours and promptly thru it in the trashcan.

        Hello!!!

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for Kitchens and Bookshelves.......2001-07-07

This is one book that every household should have, especially if you just moved out and Mom's no longer doing the cooking for you. I found this book in a single friend's stack of books and started browsing through it and can't put it down. As the title suggests, there is a remedy for most of your cooking mistake. And if there's none, then the book itself is still a funny read.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely book for those stitching for little girls.......2007-04-28

This book contains work from a number of different designers with slightly different styles which provides a lot a variety in the fairies. All the designs are quite whimsical so may not appeal to everyone, however the book well suited my purpose for something quick and pretty for several small nieces. I used the lovely fairy alphabet for little name plaques.

The layout of the book is very well-done with lots of ideas on using the designs, clear charts and instructions for floss and materials and an excellent techniques and finishing section. Those starting cross-stitch so they can make unique gifts for little girls will find this book very useful. I would not recommend it for advanced stitchers looking for detailed fantasy designs.

                              3 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-03-23

I bought this because the cover shows a slim female fairy with beautiful wings. That is the type of fairy that I like. Inside, that picture is there, but it is a large project. There are smaller projects but they do not have the beautiful detail. The cover project is certainly the best one in the book. Also, I don't care for little children or chubby fairies. There are children in here and they often look like gnomes. If you love children fairies, chubby fairies, and gnomes, this is the book for you.

There is a section on birthday fairies which is a "fairy of the month" that is pretty. Those projects are fairly short - done in an evening or two.

Another section has alphabet fairies which is also cute if you like that sort of thing. The fairies have beautiful wings, but no faces.

There is a fairy godmother which resembles a stereotypical grandmother with colorful layers of clothing. It is a country style similar to Mary Englebreit.

There are also seasonal fairies and silhouettes. I love seasonal projects, but I don't care for these.

Now there are some wonderful things in this book to balance it for me. Each project has a list of supplies needed for the project shown. The introduction is very good with lots of information and there are helps in the back to show the different techniques. Other kinds of projects are shown as well. For example, the fairy godmother project has a border around it that makes a great bookmark. Gift tags, sachet bags, cards, tooth fairy pillow, memory album, bell pull, towel band, drawstring bag, decorated notebook, pencil holder, purse, napkin holder, paperweight, coaster, and others. The techniques for these are in the book and you could use any cross stitch pattern for any of these projects. I was hoping to find a beautiful fairy bookmark, but even though I didn't find it in this book, I still found a few other items that I will use.

As a mother of a child with CP, I found this book to be a wonderful resource offering both solid advise and spiritual hope. Living with a child with a disability is often difficult, and the author truly understands those negative feelings and challenges, and really knows how to help the reader overcome the challenges with positive action, changes of emotional strategies, and looking in the right places for the support that is needed.

I recommend this book not only for anyone with a disabled child or family member, but for anyone dealing with a disability in their extended family or circle of friends because the advise and hope it provides goes beyond the immediate family.

                                  Book Description

Muddy Waters bestrides American music like a colossus. He invented electric blues and created the foundation for rock and roll. Leaving behind the cotton fields of rural Mississippi, he moved to Chicago, plugged in an electric guitar, and changed the world. In CAN'T BE SATISFIED, Robert Gordon gives us Muddy's epic, rollicking, up and down life as we've never read it before. Combining the most extensive research and interviews ever done on Muddy with a writing style as rich, poetic, and powerful as the music he writes about, Gordon transports us: We are alongside Muddy in the cotton fields as he is discovered by Alan Lomax; we are on the South Side of Chicago as Muddy and his band become stars and innovators; and we follow Muddy through scores of women, hits, bottles of booze, and moments of divine grace. A must for blues and rock fans, CAN'T BE SATISFIED is a brilliant work of musical archaeology.

5 out of 5 stars Chicago Blues and Mississippi Mud.......2007-06-23

Combining life history with a social history of Chicago's blues scene of the late 1940s through early 80s, Gordon's book is a highly readable and carefully documented biography. He uses a great variety of published and unpublished sources as well as his own interviews with Muddy's family members, friends, and fellow musicians to provide an excellent understanding of Muddy Waters' contributions to Chicago's blues scene. Because this is a biography, the focus is necessarily on Waters' influences on other musicians. These contributions are important as the guitarist, singer, and songwriter had a huge impact on the music. Gordon demonstrates how some of the major influence that Muddy Waters had on the blues was through an indirect route -- via England. He vividly demonstrates how the music of Muddy Waters was a major inspiration for the British Blues-Rock music of the 1960s, showing, in turn, how this affected Muddy Waters' own career. This is an important part of the story, and its emphasis is very relevant to Muddy Waters' life history. However, I would have liked a bit more discussion of Muddy Waters' relationship to other blues players throughout his career. This information can be gleaned out of a reading of other blues musicians' biographies, so it's not necessarily a major problem with this fine book. In fact, the way this book sparks the reader's curiousity about other Chicago players may be another strength to this well-told story.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Impressive Research.......2006-12-29

Gordon did his homework in writing this book, and I was glad to see that he tried to grasp Muddy as a man, not just as a music icon or a stereotypical rags-to-riches story. I feel as though I was given a full look at Muddy Waters, warts and all.

The one problem I have with the book is the writing style. The endless grand similes were brutal; I found myself wincing at some of them. I suppose the self-indulgent, flowery style fits the idea of writing about an artistic subject, but the similes seemed like a crutch. "Show, don't tell" is one of a writer's best adages. Grand similes, to me, scream "shortcut." Like a rusty dagger thrust between two ribs, then twisted so that the oxidized edge of the blade could be felt grabbing flesh and grinding against moist bone, it bugged me.

That one criticism aside, I, as an amateur historian, author, and blues musician, applaud Mr. Gordon's efforts and highly recommend that you read this book to understand one of the key people in American music.

5 out of 5 stars The Birth of the Chicago Blues............2006-02-07

From the first line to the last, Robert Gordon transports you back in time....to the birth of a legend, a culture and a way of life.
This book is absolute excellence. I very highly recommend it to the deep blues fan as well as the novice.

5 out of 5 stars Well Documented Biography.......2005-04-14

How can one document the life of someone who spent the first 30+ years of his life as a poor, peasant cotton farmer? It's not easy to get a good biography on such an individual, but blues fans and historians have for years been tracking down information on the life of Muddy Waters for decades, and in this book that information is compiled in a well written, informative biography.

This book explores Muddy's life on the plantation, his early interest in music, his love life, his family life, his desire to become a famous blues musician, his travels, his successes and his failures.

The author is blunt. Obviously an admirer of Muddy Waters, the author does not hide the more shameful behavior of the great musician. Coming out of this book, I admire Muddy Waters as a musician and band leader. As a friend, a father, a husband, a person he is a disappointment.

                                  4 out of 5 stars A mix of good & bad traits........2005-03-24

Mr. Gordon's bio of Chicago Blues icon Muddy Waters (given name McKinley Morganfield) is a good narrative of a fascinating life that, unfortunately, falls short of the work the man deserved. Gordon fails to explore, and barely mentions, the impact of Waters' commercial success on the racial climate of the 60s & 70s.
The index is very weak, omitting several topics that appear in the text.
Gordon's work is entertaining, but serves mainly to demonstrate that a solid, scholarly biography of the great bluesman still remains to be written.

Michael Stanislawski's provocative study of Max Nordau, Ephraim Moses Lilien, and Vladimir Jabotinsky reconceives the intersection of the European fin de siècle and early Zionism. Stanislawski takes up the tantalizing question of why Zionism, at a particular stage in its development, became so attractive to certain cosmopolitan intellectuals and artists. With the help of hundreds of previously unavailable documents, published and unpublished, he reconstructs the ideological journeys of writer and critic Nordau, artist Lilien, and political icon Jabotinsky. He argues against the common conception of Nordau and Jabotinsky as nineteenth-century liberals, insisting that they must be understood against the backdrop of Social Darwinism in the West and the Positivism of Russian radicalism in the fin de siècle, as well as Symbolism, Decadence, and Art Nouveau.
When these men turned to Zionism, Stanislawski says, far from abandoning their aesthetic and intellectual preconceptions, they molded Zionism according to their fin de siècle cosmopolitanism. Showing how cosmopolitanism turned to nationalism in the lives and work of these crucial early Zionists, this story is a fascinating chapter in European and Russian, as well as Jewish, cultural and political history.

3 out of 5 stars Obvious and Sneering.......2003-10-09

Well, of course (a) Nordau, Lillian and Jabotinsky were a product of their time and (b) Jabotinsky wasn't one of the great literary masters of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but so what? I can't quite figure out what the point of the book was. That said, I found the actual historical information very useful, especially the discussion of Nordau's bizzare love affair with a Russian noblewoman. I can't say that this book is required reading for those interested in these Zionist personalities, but it is useful.
P.S. Is it possible to write a scholarly book without sneering at the historical figures you are reviewing? I think it is and it Stanislawski's superciliousness towards the very people about whom he is writing is both grating and unbecoming.

2 out of 5 stars Promises too much.......2003-09-15

This book, while occasionally interesting and informative, doesn't live up to its promise of placing Zionism in the context of the Fin de Siecle, that caldron of ideas which ushered in our modern era. At times reading like a narrowly focused historical monograph and at other times reading like a series of esoteric literary reviews, the book uses the nomenclature of a PhD dissertation to produce an ultimately unsatisfying overview of one of the most fascinating, and important, movements of the modern age, Zionism. For those seeking a solid grounding in the intellectual origins of the Zionist movement, there must be a better book.
