The development of molecular physics and physical chemistry cannot be understood without a knowledge of the work of the Dutch physicist, Johannes Diderik van der Waals. His work is the foundation of much modern work on the theory of fluids. His doctoral thesis of 1873 was the first theory of liquids and gases in which the essential differences and similarities of these two phases were interpreted in terms of the properties of the constituent molecules. In the years since the end of the Second World War, there has been a re-appraisal of the importance of van der Waals's work, which has put van der Waals into his historic place as one of the founders of molecular science.

I have many books on this subject
and this is exactly what i was looking for when i typed the word poisons in the search engine it is neither too scientific nor too simple "the best book on the subject" If this book doesn't live up to your expectations i do not believe there is another book that can give you more info on so many poisons.

An average effort whice does not deliver on its promise........2006-06-04

`Everyday Asian' is the second book for chef Patricia Yeo and first in collaboration with culinary writer, Tom Steele. Ms. Yeo's first book, `Cooking from A to Z' got five stars from me, but this effort did not impress me as much. The book violates my principle rule that it should deliver on what it promises in its title, subtitle, and introduction. In this case, neither the title nor the motto at the top of the cover, `Asian Flavors + Simple Techniques = 120 Mouthwatering Recipes' is entirely accurate, since a very large number of the recipes in this book have little or no real Asian influence.

One of the most impressive things about the book is the introduction, where Ms. Yeo signs on to what I believe is the latest trend in cookbook doctrine. That is, the notion that one should aim for being able to cook without a cookbook by developing `your own personal sense of flavors and textures'. This doctrine is enhanced by pointing out the similarities between basic ingredients from widely different parts of the world, such as Mediterranean anchovies and Southeast Asian fish sauce. The recipes are written to support this doctrine by offering several different options to adapt the recipes to various tastes and ingredient availability. This is certainly not a new cookbook technique, as it has been done by Mark Bittman (`The Minimalist Cooks at Home') and Michael Lomonaco (`Nightly Specials') among many others. And, other writers, especially the Brits such as Nigel Slater (`Appetite') and Tamasin Day-Lewis (`Tamasin's Kitchen Bible') tackle this objective in a much more thoroughgoing manner.

The Table of Contents of this book give the impression that it is a nice manual of Asian cooking, with sections on `A Glossary of Asian Ingredients', `A Spice Glossary', `Fish Facts', and `Japanese Cooking Terms'. I am often skeptical of these chapters, as they are always shorter than similar material in books specializing in such matters such as `Bruce Cost's Asian Ingredients' and Alan Davidson's `Seafood of Southeast Asia'. And, I am even less impressed than usual with these sections, as the first three are not only incomplete, they broadly color outside the lines by offering Italian terms in the Asian Glossary and herbs in the `spice' glossary. So, I would certainly NOT buy this book for these supplemental chapters.

The recipes in the eight chapters on:

Salads
Other Appetizers
Marinades, Rubs, and Condiments
Chicken and Poultry
Meat
Fish and Shellfish
Vegetables and Side Dishes
Desserts

Generally seem to be of high quality and relatively easy, with the bonus of options, but there seems to me to be far to many familiar recipes in the 120 advertised dishes. Out of the twelve (12) vegetable dishes for example, there is:

Mashed potatoes
Roasted potatoes
Rice Pilaf
Polenta
Linguini
Risotto
Fried Onion Rings

So, 7 / 12 of the vegetable recipes are very traditional Occidental dishes. While the proportion may be different in other chapters and some Western dishes may contain an Asian ingredient or two, there simply does not seem to be a lot for the person who may already own several Italian and one or two Asian cookbooks. And, if it's `cooking without recipes you want, I strongly suggest you check out Mr. Slater. If you want easy recipes with bit tastes, I suggest you try Jamie Oliver.

A modest effort at best.

This book is both for the beginner and the advanced. It explains the basic techniques, how to transfer patterns, which materials to use. And then it brings various projects, each with a list of materials and tools, photos of the final product, patterns and designs. The book concludes with about 100 patterns/designs you can use, very clearly illustrated. A wonderful book.

A very inspirational book..........2003-05-21

The techniques and sample patterns are very inspiring especially for sewists that are becoming bored with plain fabrics. If you don't know how to stitch a straight line, this book will help in that area as well as teaching you a multitude of stitching design/styles that one can use on garments and home deco.
Very compatible with Marcy Tilton's patterns particularly, the one she released in 2003.

Fabulous Book!.......2000-11-14

I recently took Mary's beginner Sashiko one-day class and it was the best class I have taken and I've taken a good deal. This book thoroughly explains the process we learned in class. This is such an easy way to do exquisite Sashiko designs. This is not free-sytle quilting. You just stitch along the lines. You will be amazed at the product! It helps if your machine has a needle down feature. The book shows illustrations of the finished projects, which she brought to class. I highly recommend this book to those who have a ruler, compass, and graph paper, and Sulky ink transfer pens, and are willing to prepare the paper sheets for fabric design transfer. Her method is easy and precise. This is by far, my most valued book. I am a quilter and have quite an extensive library. You will love this book and the history behind the designs. The designs range from beginner to advanced and there are many to choose from!

An informative introduction to Sashiko.......2000-08-24

This book is very thorough about the history, traditions, and designs of the art of sashiko. I learned much more than I expected from a design book--I expected just a small introduction to the art and then a few projects and designs to begin with. There is much, much more! The author also shows how to put together designs of your own so there are no limits to where you can go with the knowledge from the book. However, the drawings are small and will have to be enlarged to be useful--also I wish there was at least a small section about sashiko by hand--but the title says it all--Machine Embroidery. I'll be trying it out tomorrow.

Timeless information.......2007-04-01

I am in commercial construction and have used the productivity standards (SF/day, etc) in this book as a check against our subcontractors manpower projections to (try to) ensure they keep pace with the construction schedule. I am certainly not an expert on every trade and this book helps provide data when I suspect that subcontractors are being overly optmistic with their projections. All of the productivity standards I have used have referenced in the book have been within the ballpark. Despite innovations and new products in building construction, most items are still hand-built on site. (i.e. a concrete block wall is still a concrete block wall). I suspect that this book will remain useful to me for decades.

Welcome to 1843.......2003-11-12

Nothing says Victorian more than Christmas, and this excellent book by Simon Callow presents a Victorian Christmas as seen through the eyes of the most popular of the Victorian era authors. Charles Dickens unintentionally reinvented the way we celebrate that glorious holiday by one short novel he wrote in 1843 called 'A Christmas Carol.' At the time of writing, the Christmas celebrations he described in his little book were virtually non-existant, but it was Mr. Dickens' descriptions of the way he felt that Christmas should be celebrated that took England, then America, by storm. The party at Fezziwig's, nephew Fred's gathering of friends and family, the Cratchit's meager only in sight celebration. All in descriptive detail. And it's because of Dickens' view on the matter that we celebrate the holiday the way we do now.
Mr. Callow's book gives the reader a full view of an early Victorian Christmas celebration in a number of ways. First and foremost, the complete as it was written novel of 'A Christmas Carol' is here so one can read how it all began. Callow's book goes on to explain the holiday feasts that the celebrants partook in as the Christmas Season grew in popularity, as well as the many traditions - old and new - that became popular. One very old tradition that is still carried on today is wassailing - that is, the singing of Christmas Carols for money or hot chocolate, although in days of old, the waites sang for money or a fruity rum-laced drink!
There are plenty of original 19th century drawings and paintings throughout to give the book the look of Dickens' time.
As this book rightfully states, the only images of Christmas that owe nothing to Dickens are those of the Nativity and of Father Christmas/Santa Claus. Well...ok...the Christmas Tree was introduced to the English through Prince Albert.
I love the Christmas Season and, besides the original Biblical account of the birth of Christ, 'A Christmas Carol' in its many movie versions as well as, of course, the original Dickens writing, is the epitome of the spirit of the holiday. This book by Simon Callow will help anyone who desires to have a Dickens Christmas celebration of there own, either through thoughts while reading it or, if you would like to take it a step further, by having your own Victorian/Dickens Christmas party.
This book by Simon Callow, by the way, is well worth your hard earned dollar.

Thrilling and disturbing.......2000-06-08

The story of these four people, struggling to survive in the face of tremendous danger reminds us of the evil that humankind is capable of inflicting, but also of the sweetness of triumph and defiance. An excellent first work by the author.

A heart-wrenching novel of two couples during the Holocaust.......1999-02-23

The incredibly written account of two couples that survived the trecherous Holocaust to marry and then move to America. The story starts out with all four young adults facing many normal issues until they are faced with prejudices and then changing of the system. When the Nazis take over they are all over whelmed and their lives are forever changed. The novel takes you through everyone's lives as their live through the Holocaust and survive to tell their story. I think that this is the best book that has ever been written about the Holocaust and it so beautifully done that you have to stop and catch your breath at the end. In the end, you feel love and you feel sympathy to the two couples who had to endure such pain. I loved this book and I will read it over and over because it is such a classic.

Remarkable story of survival and love.......1999-01-05

Jean Peck has beautifully written the story of how four individuals (two men and two women) who live in Hungary and Poland face and ultimately survive the Holocaust. As their homelands become embroiled in Nazi Germany, they are caught up in the Holocaust. Their survival stories, each very different, are revealed in this book. The book does not stop with the end of the war but lets us watch as they gather the strength to continue their lives after suffering devastating losses. They marry and all four become distinguished doctors. Jean Peck gives a remarkable portrait of four remarkable people. It is an inspiring book, one I highly recommend.
