This book helped me understand the way to help a teen. This is a great book for parents who want to get their child some psychologicical help, when they don't want to be helped. It helps with understanding how to talk to your depressed teen in a way where you can communicate instead of fight.

We bought this edition because we really liked an older edition and wanted to have updated information for our trip. We went to at least three wineries looking for particular varietals that this book said they produced -- none of them had them. The wineries said they hadn't produced them in "years."

Step-by-step instructions and 970 clear diagrams show beginning and experienced paperfolders how to create 27 amazing polyhedra from one sheet of paper. Graded according to difficulty, the projects range from a simple cube, tetrahedron and octahedron to a challenging rhombic dodecahedron, sunken icosahedron, and an antidiamond with pentagonal base.

4 out of 5 stars This book is really cool........2004-02-17

I really liked this book because it explains how to do all of the complicated folds. It also shows you a picture for each step so you can see what to do. I do not think that beginners should start with this book because some of the folding steps are a little hard to follow.

          4 out of 5 stars A Plethora of Precreasing - Single-sheet shapes!.......2003-04-04

Fans of John Montroll's other books will know that he tends to follow a fixed set of ideas. These are that the paper should be square and that only one sheet should be used. Outside of a few basic shapes (cubes and pyramids mostly), the use of a single sheet in creating polyhedra is not very widespread. Montroll uses this book to show up that it needs not be the case.

Montroll shows how a single sheet of paper can be folded into more complex polyhedra including skeletal forms.

These models all follow a basic pattern of precreasing the paper to isolate the polyhedron's sides, and then collapsing the paper into the 3D model. Very interesting techniques, and Montroll seems to get the largest possible solid from the paper, but the single-sheet design does lose something in solidity. Many multi-piece models are very strong, but that is not the case here. However, if you like geometrics but could not bring yourself to fold 30 to 180 pieces of paper for a single model, you will love this book.

          4 out of 5 stars Succint.......2002-04-18

For a long time the folding of polyhedras and other variations is dominated by modular origami, a category of paperfolding that models are assembled by many units of the same form. Such technic has been developed into a wildly splended state, for example, see books of Lewis Simon or Tokomo Fuse. However, in this book Montroll still insists on his long-time philosophy-- one single square paper, two hands, nothing else.

The best part of this book, in my opinion, is the 5 Plato polyhedras plus the 5 sunken Plato polyhedras, all folded by a single square paper. This is a succint approach, although not new. And the intrinsic beauty of these models explains everything. Other parts of this book are fair enough, for example, prisms and other models are relatively new compared to other polyhedra origami books.

Since every model is folded by one square, it seems that we can not hope to have some super-complex models. After all, the special symmetry structures of polyhedras do hinder the design of the folding-- in order to keep symmetry it will waste too much paper. So it is a pity for those super-hard-model-addicts.

BTW, I am happy that after so many years Montroll finally comes to Mathematics!

4 out of 5 stars Fold polyhedra using a square.......2002-04-15

Although folding polyhedra is not my favourite, nevertheless I do indulge in it.

Most of the polyhedra are folded as modulars. John Montroll folds them using a single square. Quite a challenge since most of the models are not simple to fold.

Models in this book include tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, icosahedron, decahedron, double diamond hexhedron, triangular dipyramid, pentagonal dipyramid, hexagonal dipyramid, heptagonal dipyramid, triangular prism, pentagonal prism, hexagonal prism, sunken platonic solids and many others.

I prefer folding polyhedra using modular techniques since they end up much more colourful. In this book polyhedra are folded using a square and hence only in one colour.

At the end of the book, Montroll gives suggestions on how to expand on the techniques he uses in this book to create your own one piece polyhedra.

Yes, I recommend this book for polyhedra enthusiast.

            Book Description

This book chronicles an ethnographic team's involvement over a span of fifteen years with the people of a poor, largely Puerto Rican neighborhood in New York City. Jagna Sharff focuses on a group of families who live within a radius of a few blocks of her storefront office, especially the children who come first to interact with the team. She contrasts her team's initial observations of how people grapple with daily life with the residents' expressed hopes and dreams in a community lacking jobs but rife with underground activities. Through lively and interconnected stories, she traces over time the fate of the neighborhood and the outcomes for individual children and adults during an era when the local and national policy of the war on poverty was transmuted into a war against the poor. The book's lyrical, cinematically vivid style makes it appealing both for college social science courses and for the general public.

            Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Tedious and Pointless.......2006-04-13

As an ethnographic anthropological researcher, Sharff should know better than others how to properly conduct an ethnography and offer valuable research to her audience. In documenting the tragedy and drama of the poverty-stricken individuals she is studying, Sharff believes that simply regurgitating their lives moment-by-moment qualifies as significant. At the very least a reader should be able to identify the problem she is reseaching, the goals of her research, and why it might be significant.

Instead, the book reads as though Sharff simply regurgitated her field notes onto the page without reflection or analysis. The reader is left unable to engage in a broader dialogue about anything of significance. No conclusion are drawn, or themes explored. The reader is expected to be interested in a dull and consistent recounting of serious human tragedies absent of being placed in a larger context. The result is a mish-mash of lives thrown together, and reading about Sharff's personal reactions to each. Yet, because Sharff focuses only on mere details of daily lives and does not discuss larger issues, it is not clear why her study is important or what it has accomplished.

No conclusions are made by Sharff; the book simply ends by wrapping up the current state of various individuals. I am left feeling as though the individuals in this ethnography were the victims of a terrible hoax - the only voice that comes through loud and clear is Sharff's own. The individuals themselves are left mute, unable to rely on their researcher to analyze and contextualize their tragedies to influence further research in any significant way.

The book adds nothing of immediate value to the current literature on ethnography. If indeed one is interested in this topic, and in reading an excellent ethnography that offers convincing arguments and challenges existing theories about poverty, oppression, and race, read "In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio" by Philippe Bourgois. Unfortunately for Sharff, it is everything this book is not.

5 out of 5 stars A Moving Analysis of the Forces Shaping a Poor Neighborhood.......2000-06-15

Jagna Sharff is an anthropologist who spent several years in the early 70s living in a poor Puerto Rican neighborhood in the Lower East Side before arson and gentrification forced the poor out. In vivid, cinematic style, Sharff analyzes the different forces at work in the decline of the families in the neighborhood: the loss of manufacturing in the region throws men out of work; rules governing payments in Aid to Dependent Families break up marriages; cheap drugs flood the streets, providing a source of employment for young men as well as violence and drug addiction. Sharff gives detailed and touching portraits of family and neighborhood intereconnectedness and survival skills, while at the same time describing the part maternal dependence on drug money to survive plays in their sons' need to work on the street. Sharff has a gift for describing the joys as well as the constant anxiety about hunger or illness these families face: finally a father finds work in a dry cleaning store; soon after, his son falls several stories in an elevator shaft in their public housing unit, leaving the family (now off Medicaid) with a $10,000 medical debt that will crush the family's meager income for decades to come. Sharff ends the book with two intimate portraits of a brother and sister: the first, who witnessed a murder at the age of 11, spends years in solitary confinement in state prison "for his own protection" from other inmates; the second becomes a police officer in a neighborhood much like the one in which she grew up. Sharff is not dispassionate: a childhood survivor of war-time Poland who at 8 watched bombs dropping on the labor camp in which she and her 5-year-old brother were interred, she sees the children of this neighborhood as suffering from the traumatic stress of those who live in wartime: instead of bombs comes the smell of gasoline and the arsonist's torch, the whine of bullets between dealers, the sight of a bloody rug in which higher level dealers have rolled up the corpse of a young dealer they have murdered, to "send a message." Sharff draws an indelible portrait of this terrible, wonderful neighborhood, and especially of its children, and makes a convincing case for bureaucracies more in touch with the realities of the poor.

            Book Description

It started with a difficult childhood in Chicago, wild teenage ways (including a stint as a Black Panther), and nights as a fifty-dollar performer in raucous clubs. Then came Rufus and the first hits, a solo career, and the addictions that so often accompany superstardom. But Chaka fought back and beat her demons-physical, emotional, and spiritual. Today, she's herself at last, with renewed ties to her family, her own record label, and a foundation to help women and children in crisis. Chaka! will be a delicious treat for the legion of 'Chakaholics' worldwide who have grown up to the sound of her incomparable voice-a voice of joy and pain, rage and redemption, heartbreak and healing. Yet it's also a celebration of the staying power of rebels and free spirits. Chaka! is a book for the generation of women-black and white-who came of age in the turbulent 1960s, who surfed the first and second waves of Feminism to come boldly into their own power.

It begins kind of boring because she is talking about people we really don't care about (her relatives), but once she starts talking about her teen years, her black power years, her marriage, her sucess, it is very interesting!!! It is more like listening to her talk than it is "literary", but I'm glad to get info on Chaka anyway I can!!!

Recently checked out this book and thought it was not bad as celebrity memoirs go. Though the book is a collaborative effort, it is unmistakeably the voice of Chaka Khan. She frankly discusses both the successes, spoils and the pressures of an unexpectedly rapid rise to pop stardom. As the powerhouse tomboy of seventies soul music, Chaka Khan created a amazing body of work with the integrated pop/rock/soul band Rufus. On her own, she has been less successful but no less interesting. Indeed, she is now getting her well-deserved props for the white-hot trail she blazed in pop/R&B music. At the same time, she is also upfront about her legendary drug problems, romantic failings and her flaws as a parent. All told, this is a quick read, enjoyable and very down-to-earth.

3 out of 5 stars Keep Up the Good Work Chaka.......2006-01-05

This opening comment is directed to the writer who titled their review; "Chaka Uncut".

Aretha gave birth to her first child when she was thirteen years of age. She most certainly could be Chaka's momma. As we used to say in the neighborhood a very looong time ago...."So talk what you know!"

A good read. Boring if you are looking for lots of juicy details about intimate and private portions of the author's life.

I believe this is an honest and forthright book that makes Chaka transparent before her fans and the world. Chaka's drug addiction and addled behavior was a well know industry secret.

It's good to know she is clean and moving forward with her life. She purports to be a Christian these days. Lets all wish her the best.

I truly enjoyed this memoir written by Chaka Khan and Tonya Bolden and would recommend it to any Chaka Khan fan or anyone curious as to how this siren of song came to be and lived.

I've been a Chaka fan since childhood. She is my favorite all-time vocalist. My father bought Rufus' first album but I didn't pay much attention until the second, "Rags to Rufus". Chaka's raw primal energy on the microphone had me hooked from the first guitar riff of "You Got the Love" and "Tell Me Something Good". The third album, "Rufusized", sealed my fate as a lifelong Rufus and Chaka Khan fan. I would sit, listen and ogle over the album covers for hours on end. In my naive young mind, Chaka Khan was the epitome of womanhood. I wanted to be her. All at once this woman was incredibly talented, beautiful, vivacious, tender... exuding tremendous confidence, power and an animal-like sensuality. I would shake my braids loose, dress up in my summer halter and bell-bottoms and dance about the family room doing that side-to-side-jerk-shimmy thing that was her trademark. The band's appearances on shows like Bandstand and Soul Train were moments that I lived for. My father even bought my first guitar to help appease my obsession. It was only much later that I discovered all that glitters is not gold... in regard to my idol and otherwise. My first live Chaka experience was at a mid-80's concert in the Chicago area. She was good... but clearly trashed and suffering. It broke my heart. My adulation remains however, and I'd always yearned to know her story.

The thing that I enjoyed most about the book is the conveyance of her personality through the words. Her candid expression and frankness are qualities that I deeply appreciate. Her matter-of-fact sense of humor tends to come out of nowhere. From the first mention of her first-born you can sense the guilt that haunted her career, having left her child for long periods to pursue her career. Others have remarked on the brevity and lack of detail throughout some periods of her career (if not MOST of it). I would agree. Though personal and to the point, her recollections are fairly vague. I don't know if she was limited to a certain number of pages, by deadlines, or simply couldn't recall those times through the haze of substance abuse. I will say that I wished there were more... much more. (C'mon Chaka... girl if you're gonna write it... write it) Perhaps the intent was to focus on a few specific moments and what she pulled from those experiences. To the self-dubbed "in-the-moment gal", I gather everything else was irrelevant. I would like to know more about her rise with Rufus beyond the formative years, more detail on the inter-relationships (she could've devoted an entire chapter to her and Tony Maiden alone), inspiration for songs that she penned and adventures on the road. Most importantly, more on where that voice derived it's passion and fire. She seems to have completed this book for the purposes of exorcising demons, rather than putting focus on the beauty and legend that she created. In a way the book IS optimistic, in the sense that she feels that she has now gotten the upper hand on her demons. She continues to look forward, taking each day as it comes. I wish her the very best.
