Howard Stern talks about himself on his syndicated radio show 5 days a week, 4 hours a day. Howard Stern already has published two best-selling books based on his life and career. This leaves very little of interest for the author to say about Stern who, after all, is popular partly because he blabs so freely about his own (married) sex life and the mundane humiliations of his past. Colford flips the coin and bets the reader will be interested to hear how NORMAL and NOT shocking the shock-jock's life really is. Some will be more interested than others.

Confidence Is Being Bold Enough To Be Yourself!.......2003-09-23
America has been known the bastion where you have a right to be different if you have the confidence to stay with your beliefs in the face of societal ridicule. Pioneers end up two ways, some find prosperity by starting new paths, and some end up with arrows in their backs. After reading this book, Howard Stern is a Pioneer that prospers due to his will to be different and confident at work and in life.
It was a joy reading an unbiased book on Howard Stern. I enjoyed his radio show once in awhile but admit I have had to tune it out and off now and then too. The book gave interesting information on the salaries of his staff and inner workings of Radio and TV Stations and how programs acquire airtime.
I agree with author who never trashes Howard Stern but actually gives a good picture of him and his struggles to being a Top Radio personality. I admire Howard's sheer determination to work hard at job, support his family and talk about anything.
I really enjoyed learning how the Stations Sponsors who advertised on his show were impressed with his professionalism and interest in knowing and learning everything about their products and services they were selling. This is a true mark of an honest man living up to his job as a professional.
I was surprised to learn that Infinity did pay off his FCC fines to avoid problems with a merger later. I feel Howard has been a pioneer with the airwaves and first amendment issues to the public benefit not to anyone's detriment.
Since losing his marriage and wife as well as Jackie the Joke Man it is not the same show. But is still entertaining. I now use it as one of three stations I use walking in the morning. I find National Public Radio more enlightening, Jim Quinn for more thoughtful and Howard and crew interesting and delightful on entertainment issues of our day.
In the end, Howard learn to be confident in his own ideas, own behavior and always paid attention to his sponsors, people who helped him and mutual friends and professionals. I believe having supreme confidence in you like Howard Stern demonstrates every day. Those seeking to banish him just need to tune him out or off, but not remove him in anyway
Howard Stern : King of All Media........2000-03-05
It pretty much is a factual account of Howard Stern's life from his childhood days to his days in Detroit and WNBC radio. Nothing risque is really discussed. I would recommend it to someone who is looking for a viewpoint of Howard's life other than Howard. The author neither supports or chastises Stern, but presents the facts without any bias one way or the other, and that's nice to see in journalism. It's definitely worth checking out.
Good insights into Stern's history........1999-06-03
I found this book to be informative to Stern's rise to fame and fortune. Nothing really groundbreaking or unbelieveable, just the facts. A very quick, but honest look at Howard's personal life. How he keeps everyone at bay and tries to isolate himself from the world at this house, which is understandable. Private Parts offers more humor, but a lot of the same stuff, of course.
For the Howard Stern fan who has everything -- almost........1998-07-02
I found Paul Colford's book interesting, well-written, and entertaining. I have all of Howard Stern's books, videos, CDs, and a large collections of magazine articles and such. King of All Media is a nice addition to my collection. But don't take my word for it. Go to the nearest bookstore and check it out for yourself. Then get online and order it for less $$ from amazon.com.

On the following day I was taken a round of the ironworks, and inspected their machinery, as well as that of the collieries, in the details of which Mr. Hartop had introduced many common-sense and most effective improvements. All of these interested me, and gave me much pleasure. In the evening we resumed our "cracks" on many subjects of mutual interest. The daughter joined in our conversation with the most intelligent remarks; for, although only in her twenty-first year, she had evidently made good use of her time, aided by her clear natural faculties of shrewd observation. Mr. Hartop having met with some serious reverse of fortune, owing to the very unsatisfactory conduct of a partner, had in a manner to begin business life again on his own account.

Not the easiest to read and needs to be updated .......2007-09-25
Just judging from the cover, this book needs to be updated. I bought this awhile ago and since then, easier to read books have been published. There is alot of info in it - sometimes it drags on. I wound up skipping alot of it to be honest. Good for those who have history of certain diseases in their family.... i found it to be abit boring.
Not what I was looking for..........2005-09-12
Too cut and dry and textbook like. I need a little giggle or side note every now and again.
This book was far to outdated to be helpful.......2005-03-09
I was disapointed when I saw the cover but figured the information would still be helpful. I was wrong. The list of toxins covers things not manufactured since the 1970's! It also has very minimal modern knowledge of PCOS and other fertility complications.
Skip this book it needs to be retired.
Try The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy.
Probably a good book with lots of info, but very old........2004-11-22
I ordered this book not thinking to look at the copyright date! When I got the book the front cover had a lady from the 80's on it and I was kind of disappointed because I never expected to be sold something so old! It was written in 1989 and things have probably changed since then. I'm not sure what's old school and what really happens now days!! I'd look for a newer book if I were you.
Too outdated.......2004-02-15
I was pretty disappointed in this book. It wasn't terrible by anymeans, but it just seemed so dated. I wouldn't recommend it for this reason.

A Worthy Read For Beginners Needing Inspiration!.......2007-09-13
There are the vegetarians. Then there are the vegans. And now, the raw foodists. Where does one begin?
First, with a sincere desire to improve one's health and overall attitude about food.
Being an American and growing up with fast food and a hand-to-mouth attitude, rampant obesity examples, and failing health, I had my work cut out for me. The desire to live a healthier life was there, but not much motivation to make the necessary changes. Then there was the fear that giving up on fast food, sugar, and Doritos would strip me of all pleasure in life.
One morning, I woke up and had barely the energy to get out of bed. That was the epiphany I needed, and I new that my diet was a major cause for my lethargy. So I started from that day forward on the path to total self-transformation and I knew it had to come from the inside before the outside would catch on.
I started on the vegetarian track, slowly cutting out meats. Immediately I felt a sense of euphoria - physically and emotionally. I finally had control of my eating habits. And slowly but surely, my taste for meat disappeared. Then, I converted to the vegan lifestyle. With all the soy based alternatives out there, it was easy to cut out dairy, eggs, and honey.
My skin cleared up, I lost unneeded pounds, I stopped drinking alcohol, and my energy skyrocketed, but still I knew I could do better. I had a chance meeting on a bus with a raw foodist, admiring her joie-de-vivre, her health glow, and her knowledge of nutrition. I knew this was what I was looking for.
I visited my local raw food cafe and stumbled upon Paul Nison's book. Even though I am not a boxing enthusiast, I appreciated his analogy in relation to overcoming unhealthy vices. I started to view my undertaking as a sort of sport and pretty soon I found myself celebrating my new healthy lifestyle.
Despite this book's many spelling errors and grammatical oversights, the motivation it provides and the knowledge are plentiful. Paul presents the raw food embarking with wit in an easy to understand format. This book is not overly-detailed nor technical, thus it is a good read for those of us who are less than gifted in technical jargon.
Not only does he provide instructions on how to transition into a raw food lifestyle, but he is realistic about it. He admits that the transition may be difficult for some, but he promises that it will make an extraordinary difference in one's life. He made good on his promise.
I have been raw for 7 days now, and already I have observed changes in my body and my attitude. I have Paul Nison to thank for my new life as a raw foodist.
A Must Have, Will Change Your Life!.......2006-11-10
Although I've been eating raw for several years, I still found Paul's book a great read. It's aimed at someone interested in transitioning from the S.A.D. (standard american diet) and I think his simple analogies work well. There is no doubt what Paul writes about works. I've experienced the benefits of a raw and living food diet and has changed my life, just as it has Paul's. Most of what he suggests will challenge the average American's thought process... and that's good! We've been conditioned (or programmed) to eat and live in more and more unnatural ways today and often don't realize that our diet and lifestyle is what's causing ill health, obesity, disease, colds (yes colds! Someone here mentioned that colds are caused by viruses and that Paul was talking 'gobly goop' here. That's conventional medicine talking. You wouldn't get a cold if your body was clean and detoxified... regardless of what virus and bacteria you came in contact with. I haven't had a cold in years!) often for the sake of convenience. What is your health worth? What life will you have without your health? Paul is sharing the truth here and has done a great service by writing this book. If you're open to the truth and truly interested in living a life filled with joy, fulfillment and the best health, check this book out. It's one of many in my library. All the best for your health! Gravely inaccurate, elementary, religious pseudo science........2006-02-03
I bought this book as an introduction to raw living because I had heard the author lecture recently and he seemed to be knowledgable about raw foods. I couldn't have been more wrong. First of all, the "Reality Check" raw test asks 5 extremely basic dietary questions on page 19 and states that if you got every answer right, "[means] you [do] not need to read this book." I did get everything right, but continued reading because I wanted to give the book a fair chance. However, I found the text not only completely elementary in style and information but just plain WRONG. For example, on page 29, the author claims that, "what doctors call a 'cold' is simply your body trying to get rid of wastes." False. Colds are caused by actual phenomena known as "viruses." I do have a degree in Biology, but it doesn't take a genius to know what actually causes a cold. Another example, is that of rest. On page 53, the author claims that one should sleep the same amount of time that one works--WHAT?! What if someone doesn't work at all, does that mean they shouldn't sleep? What if someone "works" a low key job for 4 hours or is a parent for 24 hours? That rule of thumb is ridiculous. Additionally the author claims on page 52 that food does not give your body energy as so many people believe, but that only sleep gives your body energy. Again, if the author had even basic schooling in the sciences he would know that the ONLY energy a human can use is glucose, which must be derived from food. Sleep is essential, but technically the ONLY thing that gives your body energy (also defined as the ability to do work and produce heat, such as a calorie) is FOOD. The things I was hoping to learn from this book, unfortunately I cannot because I see I cannot trust the source. I fear for those who are reading this book and don't know anything about health or science and take the author at his word. At about 60 pages into The Raw Life, the author has demonstrated not only a grave lack of scientific knowledge but also promotes flat out inaccuracies. Furthermore, Nison tries to shove his religion down his readers' throats by sprinkling the text with Bible verses and by "subtly" claiming his religion and the Bible is the best thing there is for health. This book is a joke.
Poorly Written.......2003-03-14
This book has got to be one of the most horribly written books I have ever seen. I seriously wonder what kind of company would publish something like this. Thank God I got it from the library. The grammar and spelling are horrible and the material doesn't flow very well. The constant boxing analogies are totally unnecessary and take away from the value of the underlying information.
Right from the get go I was disappointed with this book. As soon as I read the Foreward by David Wolfe I wanted to put the book down. It read like it was written by a teenager.
Although this book contains some decent information about raw foodism, the writing style and use of the boxing analogy completely take away from any sort of benefit. If you are looking to spend money on a book about raw food, PLEASE do not waste your money on this. Rent it from the library if you think you might actually like it.
Too Fanatical.......2002-07-12
I am so glad I took it out at the library before I spent money on it. I found the overuse of the analogy to boxing got old real fast. Very little practical information for the beginner Raw Foodist of the why's and wherefor's. I found it to be entirely too extreme and fanatical. If this had been the first book I ever read on the Raw lifestyle I would have been instantly turned off and gone back to just being vegetarian or stayed with the S.A.D.

He reached an apogee of fame in the mid-1980s as the producer-arranger of Michael Jackson's blockbuster album Thriller and the charity single "We Are the World," but Quincy Jones has been a force in American music since he was a teenager. He swung hard enough to play with beboppers like Dizzy Gillespie; he studied composition with the legendary Nadia Boulanger; he scored dozens of films and TV shows; he arranged and/or produced albums for everyone from Frank Sinatra to Leslie Gore, and rappers like Melle Mel don't disdain the old man either. Looking back at age 68 in a good-natured autobiography supplemented with brief chapters by such friends as Ray Charles and ex-wife Peggy Lipton, Jones asserts, "I've been driven all my life by a spirit of adventure and a criminal level of optimism." Given his beginnings, growing up poor in Chicago and Seattle with a mentally ill mother lurking in the background, that's quite an achievement. Jones never stood still long enough to let sorrow catch him, and though his treatment of his personal life is standard Hollywood glib ("Though Nastassja [Kinski]'s and my relationship as a couple was not destined to last, she is a great friend"), his prose catches fire when it touches on music: Dinah Washington "could take the melody in her hand, hold it like an egg, crack it open, fry it, let it sizzle, reconstruct it, put the egg back in the box and back in the refrigerator, and you would've still understood every single syllable." His furious energy may have been fueled by personal demons, but his joyous sweep through a half century of American pop convinces you that Jones was right to keep moving: "Nothing is ever wrong if it's going someplace," he asserts. "Music is about ever-changing." --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Musician, composer, producer, arranger, and pioneering entrepreneur Quincy Jones has lived large and worked for five decades alongside the superstars of music and entertainment -- including Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Ray Charles, Will Smith, and dozens of others. Q is his glittering and moving life story, told with the style, passion, and no-holds-barred honesty that are his trademarks.
Quincy Jones grew up poor on the mean streets of Chicago’s South Side, brushing against the law and feeling the pain of his mother’s descent into madness. But when his father moved the family west to Seattle, he took up the trumpet and was literally saved by music. A prodigy, he played backup for Billie Holiday and toured the world with the Lionel Hampton Band before leaving his teens. Soon, though, he found his true calling, inaugurating a career whose highlights have included arranging albums for Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, and Count Basie; composing the scores of such films as The Pawnbroker, In Cold Blood, In the Heat of the Night, and The Color Purple, and the theme songs for the television shows Ironside, Sanford and Son, and The Cosby Show; producing the bestselling album of all time, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and the bestselling single “We Are the World”; and producing and arranging his own highly praised albums, including the Grammy Award—winning Back on the Block, a striking blend of jazz, African, urban, gospel, and hip-hop. His musical achievements, in a career that spans every style of American popular music, have yielded an incredible seventy-seven Grammy nominations, and are matched by his record as a pioneering music executive, film and television producer, tireless social activist, and business entrepreneur–one of the most successful black business figures in America. This string of unbroken triumphs in the entertainment industry has been shadowed by a turbulent personal life, a story he shares with eloquence and candor.
Q is an impressive self-portrait by one of the master makers of American culture, a complex, many-faceted man with far more than his share of talents and an unparalleled vision, as well as some entirely human flaws. It also features vivid testimony from key witnesses to his journey–family, friends, and musical and business associates. His life encompasses an astonishing cast of show business giants, and provides the raw material for one of the great African American success stories of this century.
From the Hardcover edition.

Wonderful!!.......2007-04-18
I was amazed at how good this book is. This book makes you want to know what's going to happen next. I never knew Quincy Jones had a hard childhood. I think I would rather starve than eat rats. I love the fact that Quincy doesn't just talk about music all the time but Quincy went deep into his personal life. I admire the fact that Quincy never gave up on his dream to become a trumpeter. I'm surprised at how successful Quincy is with all the problems he had. Reading this book inspires me to always follow my dreams, no matter what. I recommend this book BIG TIME to anyone interested in his life!
Outstanding.......2007-03-09
I loved it! I'm learning the piano and thought I could learn something from the best. I learned more. I'm a big music lover and love Quincy and his music. He's worked with the best of the legends, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Dina Washington, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson etc. etc. He's had an incredible life! And not without tragedy and set backs and overcame them all. His family is beautiful. How he forgave the sad and unfair things done to him. Tears and laughter, so moving, especially about his brother Lloyd. Quincy's my hero. I knew he was great, but he's more. I'm so grateful he shared his life with us. I learned so much! Let the Light heal the dark places, and listen to God's whispers is where I want to be. Thank you Quincy!
WoW.......2006-12-04
I was extremely impressed. Scouting the library, I saw the book and I thought, Hey, this might be good. That night, I read 45 pages, with the school the following day: it was almost a priority. He really is a multi-talented fellow. Of his biggest accomplishment, (arguably, I mean besides his 29 Grammys) was Michael Jackson's Thriller album, but this guy can do anything. The stories are humble, the style down to earth and approachable, and above all, the stories were great. This isn't your ordinary 900 page presidential autobiography. I recommend it to anyone who appreciates autobiographies, truly something worth reading.
Not A Enjoyable Book.........2006-01-12
Like all of the other singers and musicians, Quincy Jones should stick with music. But i guesse if you can write music you can write a book. I just found it pretty boring. Quincy does awesome music though.
If you liked this book check out all of Quincy Jones's Cds
Q is The Dude!!.......2005-12-05
What an amazing life!! Never again will I say 'I can't do it!' From eating rats, stealing, getting in fights, having a mentally ill mother and generally a hard childhood, Quincy Jones found freedom and flight in music, becoming the genius he is today.
Discoverer of Patti Austin, James Ingram and The Brothers Johnson, he worked with the greats through the years; Dizzie Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer to Kool Moe Dee.
He saw all the technological innovations through the ages, from the introduction of stereophonic sound, through moog synthesizers, to digital recordings and the internet. He also moved through all the music styles, from be bop to hip hop.
We learn how Frank Sinatra nicknamed him Q, and a little of the other side of ole blue eyes that hardly gets written about. How close he was to being at the party where the Sharon Tate murder took place. His brain surgeries, his nervous breakdown and recovery. Most of all, we learn what a large heart filled with love he has.
We are also taken behind the scenes of certain monumental recordings; `Off the wall' and `Thriller by Michael Jackson, and `We are the world' by USA for Africa, and the scoring of `The Colour Purple' to mention a few.
There are also chapters written by others who knew him; a childhood friend, some of his children, Ray Charles, two of his ex wives (he is still friends with all his ex wives), and especially his beloved brother Lloyd. Lloyd's final chapter moved me to tears.
There is an extensive discography, as well as list of awards (27 Grammys among them) received and honours given him.
This book is powerful beyond words. A true inspiration!
