5 out of 5 stars Wow, what an experience!.......2002-05-27

I was inspired to read this book when Jacky Bayne came to speak at my church. What he went through was really incredible!! He was pronounced dead twice as a result of injuries that he received in Vietnam, yet somehow survived. This book shows how strong the human spirit is and that faith in God can bring a person through everything. It also renewed my faith in our American brethren who fought so valiantly to preserve the freedom that we are all fortunate to enjoy today. This man is a true American hero and I recommend this book to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have ever read........1998-11-13

Not so great for its literary value but the fact that it is a true story. The author was so influential in the development of the RR/Bristol Pegasus, RB 211 and even the RR Merlin aero engines. This is how real engineering should be. Inspirational.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book. Couldn't put it down........1998-05-07

An excellent book on the history of the jet engine. Told from a different perspective by an individual who was there from the beginning.

Book Description

A comprehensive, empathetic guide for anyone suffering from this serious liver disease
Approximately 4 million Americans and 170 million people worldwide suffer from hepatitis C, a viral liver disease that is treatable but not curable. It accounts for more than 40 percent of U.S. liver disease deaths-about 8,000 to 10,000 people annually-and is the most common reason for liver transplantation. This compassionate guide explains how hepatitis C affects the liver and the body and provides solid advice on today's treatment options-from drugs (and their side effects) to transplants and alternative therapies-as well as tips on dealing with the emotional and financial burdens the disease brings with it.
Nina L Paul, PhD (New York, NY) earned her doctorate in infectious disease epidemiology and immunology from Yale University. She has researched viruses (human immunodeficiency virus and others) and the immune system.

5 out of 5 stars Very empowering Hep-C book!!.......2006-11-13

All the information you could ever need to take control of Hep-C. It answers all questions you could think of. Easy to access information. Very clear, understandable, and easy to use. A must have!

4 out of 5 stars for patients, their family and friends .......2006-07-21

This is a very good book, from a patient' perspective. However, I would recommend reading this book, then reading another similar book, MORE DIRECTLY RELATED TO PATIENTS, by the title of "Hepatitis C - through a patient's eyes",by Suzy Smith, author

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-10-03

I gave this a five because I really like the Dummies books. I've read other books, so the info isnt really new to me. This book though is still resourceful. A good first step about learning about HCV.

5 out of 5 stars loving someone with Hep C.......2005-04-17

This book is so informative ! Information at your fingertips that you can just pick up and scan and read bits a pieces at time. When you have a loved one living with this you feel helpless and a little lost and this book really helps you see how to understand what the person with this disease is living with each day. Comprehensive basic information that you can ask intelegent questions, because without this knowledge you don't even know what to ask or how to be there to help and be more compationate. No one wants to say 'I wish I had known more about this so I could have helped"... after the fact.
Thank you, Nina Paul for caring enough to do this !
Now we know .

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource.......2005-03-31

I panicked when I first learned that my close friend was diagnosed with Hepatitis C. Thanks to this book, I am better informed of the disease, its treatment(s), and what to expect. As with other "Dummies" books, it is concise, informative, and easy to understand. I highly recommend it!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Healthy eating.......2006-06-29

Having enjoyed this author's recipes from an old Gourmet magazine, I was delighted to find she had a book with more options. Many are quick to prepare, and all are full of good healthy eating.

4 out of 5 stars Good, fast recipes.......2005-10-15

I normally cook on weekends and prepare "fancier" things than this cookbook provides, but sometimes I just need to make a satisfying dinner and I don't want to spend time on it. That's when I pick this cookbook up. Most of the recipes I've tried are easy, and while the results won't wow your gourmet friends (canned beans, frozen vegetables), they're tasty, and make good use of the ingredients. One note of caution: if you don't care for olives, you'll be restricted in what you can cook from this book. She includes olives in many recipes.

5 out of 5 stars and this is how we fed ourselves.......2001-02-09

I didn't buy this book...rather, I "inherited" it when a flatmate moved out and left it behind. Being someone who doesn't eat much meat and loves to cook, I kept it, reading it at times to see if any of the recipes intrigued me.

Well, I finally decided to go shopping and try this book out. I was floored and am delighted with it! Jeanne Lemlin's recipes are easy to follow, taste wonderful, and call for ingredients that require only minimal searching. Between the regular supermarket, natural foods store and Asian market I was able to get everything I needed.

So far, I've tried the Soba Soup with Tofu (delicious!), the Curried Red Lentil Soup with Vegetables (I happily ate this for about three days), the Sourdough Pancakes (heavenly with or without syrup), and just tonight I made Baked Tofu, Schezuan Style, which came out beautifully even though I had to substitute regular peanut butter instead of natural style or tahini. I must also add that the pizza dough recipe on page 132 has changed my life in the kitchen forever. Wonderful recipe that works perfectly for thin crust *and* deep-dish style pizzas. *yum*

This cookbook has gotten me to spend a little more time and thought on my meals, and has expanded my tastes a bit more in the process. Nothing too earth-shattering in the way of ingredients, but for someone who loves to cook and doesn't really know how...it is indispensable.

I can't wait to buy the rest of her books!

4 out of 5 stars A good resource for both vegetarians and others........2000-10-17

I've had this book for some years, and it is one of my favorite cookbooks. The recipes are widely varied (both in ingredients and complexity) and are generally very tasty. My only complaint (and it's a small one) is that the "Quick" recipes sometimes aren't. My husband and I made the "Corn and Scallion Spoonbread" not too long ago and it took right at 1 1/2 hours between preparation and cooking. Not really in the "quick meal" category.

Overall, though, it's an excellent resource for a wide range of vegetarian recipies.

5 out of 5 stars I love this little book.......1999-04-16

Ok, I admit I am only an amature, and a week-end one at that, but gardening is my passion. All winter long I drool over gardening books until the weather warms up enough to go out and dig in the dirt. Laying in bed at night, my mind is moving perennials and planting annuals. I have been known to call into work with mysterious aliments on bright sunny days where the cure unfailingly is digging up a new flower bed. Well, these are my qualifications for making a review of The Gardner's Handbook. I have found it to be extremely through, well thought out and easy to interpret. It is my very favorite gardening book. There are others that are certainly more detailed, but no one has covered as much ground in so small a volume as Mr. Buczacki. And the nice handy size of the book is also a plus! This is a good housewarming gift to folks who are first-time yard owners, as well. Happy gardening.

The above review is silly--it's like saying I bought a computer book from 5 years ago and it's out-of-date. Duh.

Anything by Barrett is a must-read, because he exposes core truths about health quackery and frauds.

I have been using this textbook for four semesters with undergraduates obtaining a minor in health education and am frustrated with the information that is outdated and full of errors. I will no longer be using the text in my courses. The food pyramid is wrong, exercise theories are incorrect, etc. My exercise science majors this past semester were disgusted with the mistakes.

Blues fans have long held up Robert Johnson's small but potent body of work as a slender pillar on which much modern blues and rock rest, and the songs themselves remain astonishing paradigms of the blues' most primordial style, the country blues of the Mississippi Delta. Yet, for decades after his murder in 1938, details of Johnson's life and clues into the genesis of his music consisted of little more than the evocative themes and settings of the songs themselves.

This brief but absorbing meditation on Johnson's life and art, originally published in 1989 in anticipation of the first release of his complete recordings, benefits from the detective work of earlier blues scholars, most notably Mack McCormick, who began piercing the veil surrounding Johnson's life in the '60s. By the '80s, reminiscences from the bluesman's contemporaries, more solid evidence of his shadowy lineage, and even the belated discovery of photographs added more dimension to McCormick's "phantom" Johnson. Yet, possibly by his own design, Robert Johnson remained more outline than flesh, still explained more lucidly in the fevered nightmares and earthy imagery of his songs than by the scattered details of his life.

Guralnick succeeds in conveying the power of Johnson's music and delineating both its origins and, ultimately, singular genius. His debts to delta blues avatars Charley Patton and Tommy Johnson are solidified, yet, more crucially, Guralnick roots Johnson's artistic growth in the specific context of this rural corner of Mississippi, at this particular moment between the world wars. He also frankly addresses the potency of Johnson's myth and an early death that only glorifies the brief, bright arc of his work. No less crucial is Guralnick's ability to convey the dark beauty of the music itself, giving Searching for Robert Johnson a broader sweep as an essential blues primer. --Sam Sutherland

              Book Description

Robert Johnson, while probably the most influential of all blues guitarists, is also one of the most obscure. Recognized as an influence on musicians like Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones, Johnson was poisoned by a jealous husband in 1938--at the age of twenty-seven. This untimely death, his supposed bargain with the devil that enabled him to play guitar, and the ferocity and tormented originality of his work have given rise to a legend that has inspired a Hollywood movie and numerous stories. Peter Guralnick's extended essay about the life of the man and the myth, and of the place and time that produced both, illuminates much of the obscurity around Johnson without forfeiting any of the mystery.

2 out of 5 stars searching for robert.......1997-01-30

It is to bad that someone so capable of telling a good tale could take a dive with such vivid subject matter at his disposal. It is extremely over priced for such a dismal read. Anyone who has purchased the Box set has read pretty much the same info given in this minute pamplet of wash. We need a vision of this man not a paint by numbers acount of times, places and song verses. Then again If you do not know the tale of johnson then this is the book for you. let me also highly recomend Robert palmers book Deep Blues. Also the finest attempt to give an acurate portrayal of such a god is the book LOVE in VAIN by Alan Greenberg...

              Book Description

Found Tribe is a collection of intimate essays by and about gay Jewish men on the experience of coming out as gay within a Jewish context or as Jewish within a gay context. No longer necessarily lost or excluded, today's gay Jews tell their courageous, powerful stories of finding and embracing their religious and sexual identities that enrich both the Jewish and gay experience. Written with honesty, humor, and insight, Found Tribe explores the joys and oys of coming out to family, lovers, rabbis, and others--and an Orthodox gay rabbi writes about Gayness and God. Found Tribe gives voice to the inextinguishable longing for community and acceptance in a religious identity that is defined by family and lineage, and serves as a beacon to isolated gay Jews that dignity and welcome await at the end of this rainbow. Found Tribe is intended as a gift and a resource for Jewish families with a gay son or sibling, and for gay Jews and all who love them. Found Tribe is the companion volume to the award winning volume, Kosher Meat.

              4 out of 5 stars A great collection.......2002-12-07

There's a wide range in this collection of seventeen essays by gay Jewish men. From young to old, from previously published to new for this book, from established writer to beginner, "Found Tribe" has something for almost everyone, even the non-Jewish. Sometimes humorous, but always poignant and informative, these essays explore how these Jewish men blend their religious lives with their personal lives when many would use that same religion to condemn them. Schimel is an amazing writer and anthologist who continues to bring thought-provoking works to the public, and this book (despite its minor plague of editorial misprints) surely enlightens. Even those who are not Jewish or even gay can benefit from the honesty, humanity, and self-liberation contained in these essays.
