Personal view of a displaced person.......2003-03-15
Even after being a Civil War buff for years and years, it was after reading this book that I finally realized that this war wasn't a soldier's war but really a war about normal people who brought all their fears and worries and preoccupations with them to camp and the battlefield and learned to adjust to being soldiers, and that is what makes this book so interesting. Eli rarely speaks of battle or carnage, but rather focusing on the mundanities of camp life, or musing on some piece of news from back home, or apologizing for how he can't finish his letter correctly because "the boys are pestering me", or that he misses his mother more than anything in the world, that he'd love to be back on his "settlement", begs the local girls not to all get married before he can get back, or giving salutations to his "connections" and "inquiring friends".
The book doesn't have any footnotes except for an introduction at the beginning and a list of short bio's on the other people mentioned in the book. Landers was a middle to lower class yeoman farmer from Gwinnett County Georgia and it shows in his provincial worries, and his punctuation and spelling (very humerous), but Eli is an incredibly blunt, verbose, and honest writer. He wears his emotions on his sleeve and pours out his feelings and quite detailed observations of everything around him. He is constantly talking about what everyone is doing, what they're cooking, what the weather is like, where the camp is located, who's sick, and who dies. In one poignant and chilling part of the book, he mentions the death of a comrade who succumbed to fever and in a rare civilian letter, his sister writes back recounting the same soldier's funeral. He also gives out numerous instructions to his mother and sisters as to ploughing and sowing fields, taking care of the newly born horses (which consequently grow and cause him heartache for he doesn't want to give them up), giving advice to his little nephew, clarifying that, despite rumors, he hadn't "been killed" (he has to do this quite often), explaining the reasons for why his letters are "poor" or "sorry", and commenting on local news from the homefront. The book actually gives an interesting window into what life was like on an average farm in the 1860s thanks to the spattering of civilian letters and Eli's responses to his family. But rarely does he speak of the war itself except for a patriotic phrase here or there, or a brief overview of where they might be headed or what they had recently done. He often expresses his enjoyment of camp life and how he feels about the idea of a battle or just hanging about with his comrades. Yet, also, in nearly every single letter he mentions how he yearns for his home, misses everyone, wishes he was at home, and tells his mother that he's reconciling himself with God for the Eternal Life to come and that she should too. The awareness of death, from the very beginning to the end of the book, is acute and gives this work a dark and foreboding side. Tragedy strikes hard and often, the family endures quite a bit of hardship (also fascinatingly pointed out in a handful of surviving letters from the homefront that explain what's in shortage back home), and makes you marvel at the strength of the human spirit.
Through the course of the book Eli always sounds like a fellow fresh off a farm, though alternately he quite obviously sounds like he becomes a veteran soldier. But as his anecdotes become more war savvy as the book progresses, he never seems to stop being a civilian and that is what gives this collection it's profundity. These were the boys who fought this war and the people who endured it.
A fantastic, if not different, book. Not full of exciting battle descriptions, but an earnestly compelling, very poignant, and always fascinating look at the day to day life during the Civil War of one very endearing young man.
thoughts from the camp.......2000-04-13
Excellent history of the inner feelings of this soldier during his time in the army of the Confederacy. Simply, these are, word for word, his letters home to his mother. We get his thoughts, not the thoughts of a reviewer or historian. A true glimpse into the camp, not the battles, is what we find in Mr. Landers' letters home.

Book Description
"I know that the thousands all over the world who love Jerry and whose lives have been enhanced by his message are eagerly looking forward to this new book. They have a treat in store. In clear and beautiful prose Jerry tells us that peace is a conscious choice. Saying good-bye to guilt is a vital step in making that choice."--from the Foreword by John Denver.
Love is where there is no fear. Fear is where there is no love. In our age of anxieties, most of us live by complex expectations about what we should achieve, how we should act, and how others should treat us. As a result, we are victimized by guilt and fear--guilt because our standards haven't been met in the past, fear that they won't be met in the future. Inevitable, these negative emotions wreak havoc on our personal relationships, self -esteem, and peace of mind. But what if we let go of our fear and guilt? The transformation can be miraculous, says world famous psychiatrist and author Gerald G. Jampolsky. The secret lies in healthy perception of yourself. Dr. Jampolsky points the way through fourteen lessons that can change your life. These lessons show: How to quiet the ego-self that creates fear and guilt. How to accept genuine love and give it away. How to stop judging others, thereby to stop judging yourself. How to listen to your inner voice to receive support and guidance. How to forgive others so that loneliness and separation become illusions of the past. And much more. Here is a book for everyone who seeks the key to life's most satisfying reward. A book that tells you how to throw off the burdens of the past, and learn what it can mean to truly love.

What Are we Identifying Ourselves With?.......2006-10-18
Most of us, if not all of us have an "identity" problem. We say we know who we are, but do we? Most of us tend to identify ourselves with our physicality. The way we look to the outside world. We identify ourselves by our personalities, our behaviors, our actions, our inactions. But all of these things are not who we really are.
So who are we, then?
We are Spirit. We are Love. We are the stuff of God. Our personalities and our behaviors are all manufactured B.S.
You can read that as Belief Systems.
Before you entered into this world of form you were a Perfect, Whole, and Complete Creation of God. You were not born out of original sin...if there is anything "original" about sin...but you were born out of Original Innocence and no matter what you may have thought, or felt, or said, or did, or didn't do NOTHING can mar the beauty that you were created in and out of.
Of course, the religionists don't want you to hear this. They want you to be so riddled with fear and so perforated with guilt so that you can keep coming back to their church so you can keep donating money. Save the money that you would normally tithe for the week and buy this book. Learn what true forgiveness really is.
Forgiving is for giving; it is for seeing yourself, and others, and the world as it really is; just an illusion. It exists, but it doesn't. I know that is very contradictory, but it is the Truth. True reality cannot be killed, or hurt, or destroyed. True Reality is who and what we truly are. When we Identify ourselves with the Living Spirit rather than with our "hallucinations" we release fear instantly. Like Jesus, we are in the world, but not of it.
This doesn't mean that some guy could stick a gun in my face and I won't drop a load in my pants, but what it does mean is that I might be able to quiet myself down enough to where I will be able to remember that Love is always more powerful than fear and if I can connect to the same Love that is in the man with the gun, then maybe the man will withdraw his weapon and if he doesn't and he shoots me, all he killed was an idea, he didn't kill me... all he killed was the flesh. You cannot kill Spirit...you cannot kill Love...you cannot kill, or destroy, or hurt the Life that everything is made in and out of.
This book is truly a gift and even if you don't like it and want to go back to your guilt and fear based ideas about life, go ahead, but just remember, it's still just an illusion.
Peace and Blessings.
Giving the Review is the same as Receiving the Review.......2000-05-06
Good-bye to Guilt is an esteem and image enhancer. The author comes from the heart and I personally feel it is the "truth." Giving is the same as receiving. Guilt is ego-based and destructive. His perceptions hit home: we only act out of two emotions -- love or fear. I also like the daily lessons so that one can put into practice the principles Mr. Jampolsky so eloquently shares throughout his book. I have personally benefited from the lessons presented in the book and have shared it with many others. I buy copies of this book and give them away to those who I feel are open-minded and willing to try something different.
The book offers a way to release your fears by forgiving all, including the world. This is so simple that most cannot or will not get it. The practice of forgiveness is written in a way that nearly all who can read will be able to apply this simple, but difficult principle. But, not all will want to forgive.
Mr. Jampolsky offers real-life examples that help to define the exact points he is trying to convey.
I will continue to buy and distribute this book to countless others in need of it and who want it.
Thank you for allowing me to review this book.

What a Push Presentation.......2000-02-10
This is one of the best Bordeaux presentation in recent years. The book really focuses on the excellent wines by today's standards, instead of following the 1855 Classification guidelines that really should have been updated a long time ago. Those beautiful pictures really help, too - it is easier for readers to remember when they know what the bottles look like! The brief descriptions of wine-making methodologies of these chateaux provide very useful information. A great book overall!

With its intricate patterning, silken and golden threads, and traditional symbolic motifs, Japanese embroidery is unlike any other embroidery technique. The term "lost art" is all too often applied to intricate textiles and needlecraft, but fortunately not to this exquisite artistry, which is still going strong even after a thousand years. This volume traces the history and applications of an ancient and fascinating form, and provides extensive instructions for achieving these beautiful designs. Though the techniques require patience and practice, many of the seemingly complex stitches are actually composed of surprisingly simple elements, and all is clearly explained here. --Amy Handy

Japanese Embroidery.......2006-01-29
I purchased this book for my wife who is learning this technique and her words were, 'the best book I have ever seen on this subject'. She says that this book gives more advice and is more easily followed than any other books she has seen. It is meant for the beginner who is new to the technique and is therefore invaluable.
Great to whet your appetite!.......2005-01-11
By all means, buy the book and try it. This is the official textbook. But if you really want to learn this art seriously, you need to get a certified teacher. Check japaneseembroidery.com for pictures and a list of teachers.
Full Color Pictures and Diagrams!.......2003-10-12
I highly recommend this book.
The book is full color with BIG diagrams and closeups of the stitches. There are also many gorgeous pictures of completed works to inspire one. There are some very impressive looking techniques in this book, yet because of the clear explanations it was very easy for me to pick up the idea, start and finish my projects (and they came out pretty well for a beginner like me, if I do say so myself. Some of my past embroidery attempts were pretty pathetic). In short, it makes a lot of sense and isn't hard to understand at all.
The explanation of tools and necessary materials is very complete, yet I could still accomplish the various techniques with a cheap embroidery hoop, an embroidery needle, cotton cloth, and floss (rayon seems to work better at filling in large areas than cotton. Rayon looks more like the silk in the book). Still, it's nice to know about the other tools. I am sure they would be helpful for larger projects.
The pages are heavy enough that the book will stay open to the pages while one is embroidering (believe me this helps). I've used it in many projects and it's still in great shape (some of my other paperback "how to" craft books have fallen apart at the binding after similar use).
There is a little bit of history and some explanation of symbols and motifs (from pages 9-25). I found this fascinating. It's nice to know more than just "how to."
I think this is a great book! I especially liked the "weaving stitches" and his examples of layering stitches on top of stitches. They really make my projects look really fancy!
A great book for a beginner in Japanese Embroidery.......2001-12-30
This book is great if you want to learn Japanese Embroidery, and are already a decent stitcher. I would not recommend it to a complete novice - it is a difficult method of embroidery that can easily overwhelm the new stitcher. The pictures are clear and the text is easy to read.

One of the most beautifull books I have. Very clear and encouraging. Lovely to the eye and for the mood... =)

The ancient Japanese art of temari yields colorful embroidered spheres of astonishingly complex-looking geometric designs. Yet the materials and the basic principles are really pretty simple: wadded-up batting or a pair of pantyhose is covered with a plastic bag and wrapped with layers of ordinary thread to form the base shape, which is then divided into sections and systematically stitched with shiny cotton. Woven and interwoven triangles, diamonds, stars, abstract florals, and other elaborate patterns emerge over the surface. The process is time-consuming and some patterns are advanced, but the basic steps and many designs are not so difficult, and the results are amazing. In Japan, temari balls are given to celebrate major events such as birthdays or weddings, but you don't have to wait for a special occasion: use a bowl full of temari balls as an interesting centerpiece or home-decor accent, or turn different-sized versions into key chains, earrings, rattles, bell pulls, and ornaments. Consult this guide for a terrific introduction to the technique, with color photos of each of the 22 step-by-step projects. --Amy Handy
Book Description
“Virtually unknown outside Japan until recently, Temari consists of a ball core covered with plain sewing thread and finished on the outside with brightly colored embroidery thread in geometric designs. Twenty-two illustrated step-by-step projects for finishing the outside complete the book....An excellent and beautifully illustrated guide and is highly recommended for all crafts collections.”—Library Journal.

beautiful Instructions.......2006-02-10
This book is wonderful. It provides full instructions for making temari with photo illustration. This book is excellent for beginners that have never tried doing temari. Everything is written in an easy and understandable format. Even my 15 year old girl could make one all by herself
best diagrams.......2002-10-08
nearly twenty years ago, i bought a temari ball in little tokyo in los angeles. i was fascinated, but had no idea of how to learn. (not living in l.a., looking for instruction in little tokyo was a non-starter.) i was thrilled several years ago to find a temari instruction book.
i was less thrilled when i tried to follow the instructions.
having just taken a class in beginning temari making, which made everything much, much more clear, i have acquired a couple more temari books for advanced instruction and inspiration.
of the three i own as of this moment, this one has the clearest diagrams, and some of the best instructions and photos. ludlow mentions 'minor' points, such as when to hold the thread in position, that make actually accomplishing the design possible. the diagrams are varied, from 'maps'(the way a globe is flattened to a map) of the patterns to diagrams for stitch directions and where each section of the design starts. the photos are clear, and include some that show method, as well as those that show the finished product.
there is even a section with line drawings to show how to develop patterns from the various divisions, a great help for designing your own.
this is an excellent book for the beginner (and i wildly applaud anyone who can teach themselves this craft from written instructions)and for the somewhat experienced. ludlow's advanced designs may not be as advanced as some in other books i have seen, but she certainly does well by the beginning and intermediate crafter.
Clear Instructions.......2000-01-05
As a beginner to the craft of Temari I must say that I found this book to be very clear and concise with easy to follow instructions and some excellent hints to make the constructon of the basic mari very easy to attain. Also appreciated was the instructons on making tassels etc. to add the finishing touches to the completed ball. All in all I would heartily recomend this book as an excellent beginners manual.
Beginners could give it a try.......1999-10-24
A very basic book of the more simple Temari patterns, which could be good for the first timer. If you have already attempted and mastered any Temari you'll probably find it a bit disappointing. There are some interesting variations on basic designs, but use your own colors. For someone wishing to make their own base mari, there are very good step by step directions, and overall the directions given for the book contents are clear both in verbage and photo illustrations.

This second book by this author is rather advanced, not the step-up second type instruction book I had expected.
A good book for intermediate temari.......2000-03-29
Well, a friend of mine had this book, and she showed it to me, and it was part of what got me interested in temari. This book is okay for a beginner, but it's probably better to start with one specifically designed for beginners... anyway, the instructions are good, even if the author does over-explain a little bit. This is a good step towards making temari patterns more complex and interesting.

Book Description
Imagine having it all: money, celebrity, success. Imagine leaving it all behind -- to answer a higher calling.
Sparked by his work with Sean "Puffy" Combs' Bad Boy Entertainment, Mason "Mase" Betha's meteoric rise to fame is one of rap's great success stories. In addition to performing on such hit singles as 112's "Only You," Puffy's "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down," Notorious B.I.G.'s "Mo Money, Mo Problems," and Mariah Carey's "Honey," Mase sky-rocketed as a solo artist whose languid vocal style set him apart. His debut album, Harlem World, went platinum and his next album, Double Up, was eagerly awaited. But just as he was poised to sign a multimillion-dollar deal with Bad Boy, Mase walked away.
Mason Betha is now a pastor, inspirational speaker, and founder of a nondenominational group called S.A.N.E. (Saving a Nation Endangered) Ministries. Having turned his back on stardom, he reveals in this fascinating memoir the rhyme and reason behind his choice to leave a glamorous life of extraordinary wealth and influence to become a pastor with a powerful message for America's youth. Thought-provoking and illuminating, Revelations is an undeniable testament to the enduring power of faith -- and to the limitless possibilities in a life transformed by God's guiding hand.
Customer Reviews:
Poorly written dull book.......2007-05-06
Fortunately, I borrowed this book from a neighbor and did not have to waste my money on it. It is very poorly written. Mase writes like he has very little education. He apparently wrote this book for someone on a third grade reading level or maybe that's his level of reading. This book is also boring and obviously just an attempt to make some money after going broke and trying to return as a rapper -- 10 years later -- only to find out that his previous fans were also tens years older now, no longer huge rap fans, and and the new rap generation and had never heard of him and were not interested in the corny songs that he was now putting out as a rapper. The reviews that praise this book were probably written by members of his church congregation.
Mase..Pastor Mason, whatever.......2006-11-14
Mase penned an autobiography soon after he announced to the world that he had given up music to be a pastor circa 1999. Fast forward to 2006, and Mase is totally contradicting himself: In his book he vowed to leave music behind and serve the Lord. Why is he in G-Unit now? Why did he say he never wanted to rap again and he comes out with "Welcome Back?" I don't know.
As a whole, this book is poorly written. The grammar is so elementary that an idiot could understand. He probably wrote it this way so he could get through to his old fans, knowing a lot of them are from the streets. I felt it should have been written more professioanlly. I say this because he stepped out of the spotlight in an effort to reach people through God. He already faced much scrutiny by leaving his old lifestyle, he could have written the book in a more professional way. The book does a lot of jumping around; one minute he's talking about sleeping with women of every ethnicity, in that very same minute, he's talking about the struggle of being a pastor, where's your format Mase?
If one can put all the pieces together, they will find that he actually has a pretty interesting story to tell. But, the reader would have to pay close attention. Mase gives us a glimpse of his childhood and how he grew up in a rough bureau of Harlem. He tells of his Bad Boy days and how much he smoked, slept with women, and just inferred that he was a very scandalous individual. Then one day he reached an epiphany and found God, and he became a pastor and totally gave up sex, weed and the typical rapper lifestyle. He started fraternizing with only pastors and his fiancee. He basically made himself out to be a saint, and he could have possibly been believeable IF he had not RETURNED to the same lifestyle he demeaned several times in his autobiography.
I wanted to read this book, but after my experience, I would tell the next person to leave this hypocrite of a man on the shelf.
The Book is onTime.......2006-11-06
In the times that we live in God is raising up soldier like Pastor Mason Betha, who stand boldly, unashame, not compromising the message. The message is very much ontime. People are thirsting for the truth. Here in this book it is given very plainly without any sugar coating. Truly a last day Prophet walking amoungts us.
A Great Great Thing!.......2006-08-23
Mason's experiences of growing up and partying in New York City back in the days were so similar to mine (before I got saved...Praise be to God.) Thanks for the walk down memory lane!
It's a great great thing when young black men declare their love for God and his son Jesus Christ. Mason's life is a testament to the fact that you can have lots of cars and bling-bling, and it can be here today and gone tomorrow. Know that God's love is way more than that, because it is EVERLASTING.
4.5 All Things Are Posible With God!.......2006-07-09
Although Mase is back in the rap game...This Book was a Grreat Read I enjoyed his honesty and i truly believe he has a "calling" on his life! I strongly advise ALL young people and people in general to get this book u wont be dissapointed!

Book Description
"An extraordinary book, an extraordinary, frightening life. To be Polish without nation, Jewish without family, hunted down in a land at war - and to be a genius in the making - well, it's not the normal teenager's life. Mira Hamermesh sees past and present with a film-maker's flawless eye, in this shattering written memorial to those she loved and lost." -- Fay Weldon, Introduction
Mira Hamermesh is an award-winning filmmaker, painter and writer. This moving memoir gives a vivid account of her remarkable life. As a young Jewish teenager she escaped the horrors of German-occupied Poland with only her natural creativity, a rebellious spirit and a talent for good fortune to rely on. Of the millions of words written about WWII, few come from women, and even fewer recount such adventure. Spared the experience of the ghetto and the concentration camp that claimed most of her family, Mira's story is life-affirming account of a life lived to the full, and a meditation on survival and coincidence, that pays homage to other people's courage.
Recounting her escape into Soviet-occupied Poland, Mira shows how her status as a refugee has continued to influence her throughout her life. The journey led her across Europe and eventually to Palestine in 1941; her account of that region, before the establishment of Israel, provides a fascinating insight into the historical setting for today's conflict.
Having settled in London where she studied art and married, she eventually won a place at the celebrated Polish Film School. At the height of the Cold War Mira Hamermesh commuted across the Iron Curtain -- her experience of a divided Europe offers many insights into the political factors that affected people's everyday lives.
Mira's theme of political conflict, so often explored in her films, is brought to life here in an intimate account that will live long in the memory.
