Book Description
Sir Charles Cotton served in the Royal Navy from 1772 to 1812. Unfortunately timing precluded his presence at Trafalgar, but he participated in other pivotal battles, including The Saintes and "The Glorious First of June." His career culminated with command of a squadron based off Lisbon, Portugal, followed by commands of the prestigious Mediterranean and Channel Fleets. Each of these commands notably influenced the Peninsular War. This study helps to answer one of the most frequently asked questions about this era: How did British naval power contribute to the defeat of Napoleon? Krajeski expands current thinking about the Royal Navy's leadership and accomplishments during this period. Cotton belongs to the most storied generation of naval commanders in British history. They first served during the American Revolution, participating in numerous combined operations and naval engagements along the North American coast, in the Caribbean, and elsewhere. The experience that they gained between 1775 and 1783 figured prominently upon the resumption of war against France in 1793. As a captain in the Channel Fleet, Cotton fought at the Battle of "The Glorious First of June" in 1794 and actively blockaded the French Atlantic ports; as an admiral between 1797 and 1806, he focused primarily on the blockade of Brest. In 1808 he achieved a modest measure of contemporary fame as commander of a squadron that supported Sir Arthur Wellesley's campaign in Portugal. Cotton subsequently influenced the Peninsular War as commander of the Mediterranean and Channel Fleet. He died while in command of the Channel Fleet.

British naval history comes alive!.......2000-02-24
The book was obviously written for historians, and more particularly those historians interested in the British Navy during the Napoleanic era. Nonetheless there is much to be learned by the laymen who are interested in what life was like for the average naval officer during that period. The names of Nelson and the others parade in and out of the pages of this book as the story of Charles Cotton unfolds; the story of a non-hero who began his career off the coast of North America during the war for American Independence and rose through the ranks to become commander of the Mediterranean Fleet and of the Channel Fleet before his career came to an untimely end. Cotton's career did not afford him the distinction of fame and fortune but he faithfully served both king and country. His career was certainly more the norm that those of his famous contemporaries. The very nature of this book demands the inclusion of many names, dates, and places, but in spite of all the data, the author has made it a fast moving story that will hold the interest of professional and amateur historians alike.

Book Description
For parents of the nearly 300,000 babies born prematurely each year, Susan L. Madden has written The Preemie Parents Companion .
Customer Reviews:
Better understanding of preemie .......2007-05-05
This was a great book to read while my daughter was in the hospital. It had a good flow and helpful information. The only part that I didn't like was the section on breastfeeding. The author seemed to have a bad experience with her preemie and breastfeeding and her discouragement really came out in this section. I guess it was good though because it motivated me to touch base with a lactation consultant so that I would not share in her breastfeeding disappointment. Overall this book did help me to better understand my new and unexpected life with my preemie.
Great book for preemie parents!.......2005-03-22
We bought this when our son was born 10 weeks early. This book is very well written and easy to understand. It takes you through the early NICU days all the way to school age. This book was very helpful to us during the NICU time because when it first happened we were clueless (and we sometimes found it hard to get answers from doctors). It gives you information so that you know what questions to ask your baby's doctor. This book explained pretty much anything preemie related.
Highly recommended for any preemie parent!
The Best Guide through preemie parenthood.......2002-01-29
I am both a physician and a mother of a son who arrived 11 weeks early. This book has helped in every facet of my premature parenthood from breastfeeding (or, in my case, my ongoing attempts) to just feeling I was not the only preemie parent out there. In addition, the explanations of the various medical problems premature babies may face are excellent. Truly, a book that every premature parent would benefit from having.
How to Keep Your Sanity During an Especially Tough Situation.......2001-07-28
Our son was born at 26 weeks (3 months early) and was in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) until one day past his due date. We were given this book after he'd been there one month. Let me tell you what a life-saver it was! We had been given a "crash course" in the care delivered to a premature infant... very scary stuff. Wires, machines, noise, drugs -- and in the middle of it all this unbelievably tiny human being who is your child. This book took much of the fear away and instead educated us. Preemies don't stop being preemies when they come home! This book gives the technical data in an easy to understand format that is not condescending and also focuses on the emotional as well as physical needs of the baby. Additionally, it gives contacts and information on potential problems, how to spot them early, and how to handle them. There is also a good referal list in the back. I would recommend this book not only to preemie parents, but to anyone in contact with a preemie and their family. PS. As of this writing, our son is one year old and doing great!
Better books out there.......2001-07-18
I haven't used this book much at all. Books by Joseph Garcia-Prats and Dana Wechsler Linden were much more helpful.
Book Description
Fundamental to the understanding of wine is a sense of place. Knowing which country, which region, which vineyard, and even which hillside a wine comes from adds enormously to the pleasure of drinking it. Through its unique cartography--more than seventy-five spectacular, hand-painted panoramic maps--and Oz Clarke's lively and opinionated prose, this revolutionary atlas illustrates and explains the vital connections between the land, the winemaker, and the wine.
This edition has been completely revised, updated, and expanded, with a closer look at Napa and Sonoma, and new maps for Chile, Argentina, and elsewhere. No other book maps the world of wine as vividly, and no wine library is complete without Oz Clarke's New Wine Atlas.
Customer Reviews:
Under-appreciated.......2006-11-10
This is a wonderful atlas. It differs from other offerings in that it includes panoramic maps, giving the reader a real feel for "the lay of the land". The book also has regional "keys", providing information on grapes grown, aspect, soil and climate. The accompanying text is less scholarly in tone than The World Atlas of Wine but nearly as informative.
If I were to recommend one reference, it would be the above referenced atlas. But if your bookshelf has room for two, get this as well.
It takes you there.......2006-05-25
I can hardly judge the author's knowledge about wine itself, as I am definitely not a connaisseur. I just enjoy wine and want to know a little better about it. It also happens that I like to travel too. So, I thought it was a pity that nobody has reviewed this nice book before.
What I can say is that this book is very well done, with an interesting introduction, and maps that try to replicate the vegetation you would find in the actual places. It really gives you the sense of traveling to the area he is describing, which is not bad considering the aim of this type of book.
Comparing this to Hugh Johnson's Wine Atlas, this one feels much more like a travelogue, a quite good one, whereas Johnson's seems to be more informative about growers, more like a mapped encyclopedia. If you are just a curious wine consumer and can have both, start with this then go to Johnson's. If you can't, perhaps a good idea might be to buy this one and Johnson's Pocket Wine Book...or the other way round. It's a tough decision.

Very useful resource and learning tool.......2001-03-24
This comprehensive overview of decorative painting includes historic American, European and Asian styles. More important to me, however, was the basic information about developing a personal technique, varieties of materials available, practical information about finishes, and more. This book should be the cornerstone of any decorative painting collection.
Jo Sonja's Guide to Decorative Painting.......1999-12-22
I am totally in awe of this book. Not only has Jo Sonja collected exquisite photographs of folk art from all over the world, she has also provided wonderful instructions for creating each of the styles on your own--and added notes for developing your own personal style. In the next millenia, Jo Sonja will be remembered for her work as one of the great folk artists of this century.

Reaching out to those with dementia.......2007-05-18
This validation technique is simple to learn. The case studies show you how to apply the technique to different situations. It consistently works where other methods don't. It has made my work in a nursing home so much more enjoyable and rewarding. It's the greatest when you have residents calm down and open up because you have taken a few minutes to validate what level of experience they are at.
The Validation Breakthrough.......2007-05-09
A must read for any one with elderly parents or working with the elderly population. Great insight to understanding unusual behaviors and how to communicate with the elderly. This book gives you great techniques on how to deal with stress, anger and conflict while conserving the dignity of the parent or patient.
Extremely useful information.......2007-01-05
This book provides you,the reader, with unique, valuable, and extremely useful information about Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Its suggestions defuse stress before it becomes overwhelming. Understanding dementia is key, and this book provides the reader with the facts that are essential for making your life easier by using the validation technique.

New Concepts that work.......2006-12-06
I work in an assisted living facility for dementia care. We deal with all stages of Alzheimer's disease, and experience many difficult bahaviors that are difficult for staff and family to handle. This book was a revelation for me, it gave anecdotal and concrete advice and tools to use to communicate with people suffering from dementia. I have applied many simple suggestions and found that they are surprisingly on target. I have been able to bring a much calmer mood to our unit by sharing these techniques and also the different frame of reference they represent. Our residents are wonderfully special people, and this book helped me to help them better in handling their disease.
Must read for someone who needs hope communicating with someone with Alzheimer's -Type Dementia'.......2006-03-18
An invaluable and comprehensive guide to not only the disease Alzheimers, but to the possibilities for the patient and caregiver. Teqniques found in "Validation Breakthrough" were invaluable to me during a 1 week introductory Pastoral Care Course set in a Memory Care Unit allowing me to cut through the many mysteries of the disease and minister immediately to the individual. I would think a key peice for a family new to living with Alzheimers. Naomi Feil speaks in an easy to understand language of love and life long experience.

Music Positively Affects Young Lives.......2003-03-19
As devastating as it must have been for Roberta to 'lose' her husband, this unfortunate turn of events in her life ended up saving and improving immeasurable young lives in East Harlem. Often something that seems to be tragic is actually a blessing in disguise and Roberta's dedication to the violin and teaching has made and continues to make a huge difference in the lives of many children. This is a touching story of the life of an American-Italian woman and how she was able to affect the lives of young people. I greatly recommend it - especially to those in power of cutting funds for music in public places!
Music of the Heart.......2000-05-31
She had no idea where to begin. Her marriage having just collapsed, she arrived in New York City in 1980 with her two boys and a crate full of violins. Music of the Heart (by Roberta Guaspari with Larkin Warren) is a story about Roberta Guasparti and how much music impacted her life and the lives of those she came in contact with. Roberta began playing the violin at age nine, and through her life, her violin has been the only instrument that, through playing, she found peace, sanity, and control for a once shattered life. Being a violin player myself, I can relate and understand how much music can impact someone's life. Through this book, I can see how important music is to Roberta, to me, and others as well. One life-shattering thing that Roberta went through was the finding out of her husband's affair. The Guaspari family was living in Greece at the time, and the night before they were supposed to catch a flight back to the United States, Roberta discovered her husband and another lady at 2:00 in the morning on a beach. She was literally devastated. Her husband then announced that he didn't want her to be a part of his life anymore, and the only thing she could do for the next couple of days was lay in bed, stare at the spinning ceiling, and cry. Starting out again in America, she stayed with her parents until she could get back on her feet again. After realizing what more life had to offer, she eventually moved out on her own with her two sons Nick and Alexi. They ended up in East Harlem and music became a huge part of her life again. She began teaching kids of all ages at a public school that met many difficulties. Having a low budget to work with, she had to give more time, money, and energy that she ever imagined. But her school kids, their progress, and getting back on her feet brought her happiness again. This book reminded me of how much I love music, especially violin music. That is what first got me interested in this book. If you are interested in any sort of music, or want to know how much it can affect you, I would suggest Music of the Heart.
Gloria is the brightest star!.......2000-03-14

Book Description
Holocaust survivor Bender was 11 years old when the German army invaded his native Poland. He lived in Czestochowa, a backward town steeped in medieval ideas and anti-Semitic attitudes--and thoroughly unprepared for the mechanized terror of the Nazis. When the SS arrived, Bender, his family, and the town's other Jews were soon segregated into a ghetto. Later, Bender and his brother were spared from the death camps because they could provide useful labor for Hitler's war machine. Forced to leave their parents behind, they moved from factory to factory, only to end up at Buchenwald.
Interspersed throughout are chapters about Bender's future wife, Sara, her struggle against Nazi occupation, and how she and Bender later met in an Israeli kibbutz. Glimpses is an extremely readable narrative that's both horrifying and uplifting.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best written personal holocaust narratives........1999-01-09
I have just finished Glimpses and want to say it made a deep impression upon me. It's a moving account of the World War II experiences of the author and his wife. It's beautifully expressed and one of the best written personal holocaust narratives I have read.
While not a Jew myself, I have long had an interest in Jewish history and especially in that darkest of periods known as the holocaust. Every time I read a book like this it is painful to realize that for every person who survived, there were thousands who were less fortunate. To know that these two people have remained together for so many years and are now helping others to learn the truth about this period in history is especially satisfying.
