Book Description
Brigadier General William Thomas Meredith, known to his friends as Tom, was born in 1919 in Halifax County, Virginia, where his father was a school principal. After much relocation throughout the state, Tom attended the College of William and Mary on a sports scholarship and seemed to be heading for a career as a professional baseball player. The Pittsburgh Pirates eventually recruited him as a catcher, offering him an annual salary of $3,000 but turned down his extravagant counter demand of $3,500 a year! It was 1941, and war was raging in Europe and festering in the Pacific, so he walked away from baseball and enlisted in the army, beginning a military career that would span more than three decades. After basic and some engineering training, he joined the Haynes Mission, spent two years in the jungles of Burma, leading a guerilla patrol, in Northern India, building air bases, and was awarded a battlefield commission to 2nd lieutenant. Then came Korea, Viet Name (where he commanded the 554th Civil Engineering Squadron) and the 1414th Air Base Group in Saudi Arabia.
In 1950, he began a long association with the Pentagon as Officer in Charge of Master Planning, Hqtrs. Military Air transport Command (MATS) at Andrews AFB. For three years, he worked on projects resulting in major expansion of Air Transport Bases all over the world.
Then came several years in Great Britain as Director of Engineering and Construction, planning and building facilities for the Army, Navy and Air Force in the United Kingdom and Scandinavia.
Moving up through the ranks from Private to Brigadier General, he ultimately was instrumental in establishing programs for the USAF that were so important and fundamentally valuable that, even though he retired from active service in 1973, they still provide combat engineering support, worldwide, for the USAF today.
Known as Prime BEEF and RED HORSE (Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron, Engineering), these concepts provided comprehensive engineering and heavy construction equipment support to the USAF in combat theaters, and were a vital part of America's operations in Viet Name, during Desert Storm and again in Afghanistan.
In 1986, to honor the father of USAF combat and contingency engineering, the Air force created The Meredith Trophy, personally awarded annually be General Meredith to the winning Prime BEEF team at a competition called the Readiness Challenge, held at Tyndall AFB in Florida.
Retirement after such a lengthy, illustrious and often arduous career would put most men in a mood to kick back, maybe do a little fishing and work on their memoirs, but not so Tom Meredith. In 1973, he returned, as a civilian, to Saudi Arabia for a period of two years, with the Tumpane Construction Company. Then, joining the prestigious firm of Parsons Brinckerhoff, he managed a major project linking the Reading and Pennsylvania Railroads into a commuter rail system under the city of Philadelphia and later, as President of a new Parsons Brinckerhoff corporation branch, oversaw the building of the beautiful Sunshine Skyway Bridge in St. Petersburg, Florida.
He retired from Parsons Brinckerhoff in 1990, but during this time period he and close friend and associate Truman O'Keefe pooled 50 years of combined experience to develop the Meredith/O'Keefe Management and Construction Control System, using it successfully on all jobs they managed. Via their company, Mere'Queen Associates, they promoted and taught their system all over the country.
General Meredith also was an active participant in developing and promoting a product called Pyrocool, a unique chemical formula that extinguishes fires by "cooling" rather than smothering them. This product subsequently played a critical role in reducing the temperatures at "ground zero" after the terrible destruction of the World Trade Centers, making it possible for the rescue workers to continue their work.
At the request of Vice President George Bush, he formed a team including retired Ambassador Hank Byroade, Reverend Jerry Falwell, Montana Senator John Melcher, Congressman John Mackie, and defense advisor Richard Stilwell to explore ways to help and to stabilize the economic and political situations in the Philippines. He tells many fascinating stories of the personal relationships he forged with Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos.
An active leader of the Society of American Military Engineers, Meredith is a Fellow of the Society. Serving as regional Vice President four times and national Vice President twice, he was awarded their Newman Award in 1965, and the prestigious Gold Award in 1986.
In 1985, General Meredith and his wife, Patricia, also participated in a People to People Ambassador trip to China with SAME members. He remains active in both RED HORSE activities and in Republican politics and has helped run election campaigns for both Senator John Warner and Oliver North.
In addition to being in demand for speaking engagements all over the country, General Meredith has spent the last two years compiling and organizing materials and notes for this biography.

Book Description
Eminent historian Stanley Mayes chronicles the truly extra-ordinary life of Giovanni Belzoni: engineer, barber, monk, actor, and strongman in a circus (where he earned his title 'The Great Belzoni'). He is perhaps the most important and yet least-remembered explorer and archaeologist of the last two hundred years. Under near-impossible conditions, Belzoni transported the colossal granite head of Rameses II from Thebes to England, where it remains one of the great treasures of the British Museum. He went on to excavate the great temple of Abu Simbel, discover six major royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, and provide the British Museum with a spectacular collection of Egyptian antiquities. Belzoni was the first person to penetrate the heart of the second pyramid at Giza, the first European to visit the oasis of Siwah, and the first to discover the ruined city of Berenice on the Red Sea. In 1823, at the age of forty-five, Belzoni died of fever trying to reach the mysterious city of Timbuktu. This treasure of a book tells all of his amazing stories.

Great information.......2007-10-10
This book has been very beneficial for my husband and myself. We kind of knew what to expect, but this book really gave some great information on things you really don't know to even think about. I would recommend this book for anyone who is considering WLS!!
Absolute "must have" for the pre-op WLS patient. Very thorough. It is my WLS bible.......2007-09-25
This is the gotta have book for Weight loss surgery, it is my bible. You read this and you will have all you need to know. Read it before you go to the nutritionist and the pysh consult. It will give you comeplete understanding to know what to expect and what to do. It made me feel more comfortable about my decision to get Gastris Bypass surgery.
Great Book.......2007-09-20
This book was so informative. It walks you through every step of the process, from deciding which surgeon and procedure to the actual surgery to recovering and going home. There are even recipes and pages what you can expect to be able to eat at different stages of the recovery. Like all of the "Dummy" books, it is in regular every day English, not a lot of technical words. I took this book to a support group meeting the other day and one lady came up and said "Isn't that a great book". So if you are considering the surgery, I would highly recommend this book.
Covering All the Bases.......2007-08-22
Of all the books I've read regarding WLS, this is, by far, the most comprehensive. It covers everything from making the decision and dealing with insurance companies to post-op healing and the life-long impact surgery has.
I can't speak highly enough about this book and would suggest it for anyone having (or considering) bariatric surgery.
WLS for Dummies.......2007-08-22

interesting.......2005-07-28
I think this book was pretty thorough when it comes to plastic surgery. The pictures are helpful too. I think it needed a bit more information on dermatological services that can be obtained instead of or in addition to the surgery.

What Mrs. fisher knows about Old Southern Cooking.......2007-06-27
The recipes are cleverly presented but they consist of brief summaries or notes about cooking.
Interesting for the student of African-American Gastronomy.......2001-10-26
"What Mrs. Fisher Knows" is a charming antique and should be read by anyone with an interest in African-American or Southern cookery, or anyone who would like to re-create authentic 19th century American cuisine.
This reprint of "What Mrs. Fisher Knows" was brought into being by Karen Hess. Hess has provided an informative introduction to the recipes (which are reproduced in their entirety), explaining many 19th century cooking concepts which may be unfamiliar to the modern cook and providing as much of Abby Fisher's story as can be found. In Fisher's original text it is interesting to see some of the earliest known written recipes for several dishes and to discover others which are almost unknown today. Fisher's original recipes are typical of 19th century (and earlier) cookbooks. Each recipe is several sentences in a single paragraph, with no separate ingredient list. In many cases it is assumed that the cook will know how to prepare something that is taken as a given in the recipe. This is a cookbook from a time when all cooking was "from scratch", when there were few labor-saving kitchen gadgets, and printed books were luxury items. It is not a step-by-step cookbook. [For that, see Chef Paul Prudhomme or Southern Living.]
"Good Things to Eat" by Rufus Estes is sometimes called the first cookbook written by an African-American. "What Mrs. Fisher Knows" was published thirty years earlier. (It could be said that Mrs. Fisher, a former slave, did not actually "write" the book as she evidently did not know how to write; she dictated the recipes to a member of the Women's Cooperative Printing Office in San Francisco which published the work in 1881.)
(The editor, Karen Hess has done similar work on Mary Randolph's "The Virginia Housewife" and "Martha Washington's Booke of Cookery and Booke of Sweetmeats".)
Historical Treasure.......2000-09-21
As soon as I learned of this book's existence, I ordered a copy for myself. I love cooking (and cookbooks), and I am also fascinated by the kind of first-person, anecdotal history that can be derived from the writings or records of ordinary people living long ago. This work--the first cookbook by an African-American, actually a former slave, originally published in 1881-- appeals to both of those interests, and, in addition, is a curious little conversation piece to display on a bookshelf. The recipes are not ones you will turn to each night when making dinner, but they are fun to experiment with, as long as you rewrite the directions first in their proper order (they are written in a stream-of-consciousness style), and as long as you read the historical notes that define the units of measure used in the recipes. This book could be a great guide for a "historical reinactment" of a Civil War era dinner, or, if not, then it is at least a selective culinary history of the Old South. Most interesting to me are the medicinal recipes, like blackberry syrup as a remedy for dysentery, and the recipe for "infant diet." This edition contains not only the original cookbook, but an informative afterword that explains some historical facts about Mrs. Fisher and the society around her. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in American history, African-American history, or the art of cooking.

Let's Ride.......2007-01-26
What a wonderful book! I can't wait to use these techniques in my summer camp program! The kids will really enjoy doing these activities.
The ultimate horse training book.......2002-03-06
These techniques are AMAZING! They go against most conventional methods, but what a way to empower not only the rider/handler/owner but also the horse. You don't need to read the book cover to cover in order to start the work. Some of it seems a bit odd at first, but they truly work. I tried some Ttouches a few years ago, on a whim, and THEY WORKED! Since then I have tried more and more. I even attended a seminar with Linda Tellington-Jones. "Let's Ride" is the best of all her horse books. It covers just about everything. It is written for kids, but it is just as valuable to handlers of all ages. This method of training and this book in particular is a must have for anyone dealing directly with horses...from the saddle or from the ground. Just have someone do the seemingly odd touches on one of your legs, and feel the difference.
EXCELLENT for children!!!.......1998-11-18
I bought the book as an instructor, and I feel this book is EXCELLENT! Easy enough for younger riders to read, yet the information is rich enough for even ADULTS to enjoy and learn from! Lots of color photographs.
A must for any instructor and every young rider!!!

The most comprehensive book of needlework and craft projects for the dolls' house from a team of acknowledged experts. Venus Dodge conceived this book as a real inspiration, full of new ideas and expert practical advice to help both beginners and experienced miniaturists. Together her team produced an impressive and comprehensive range of projects covering every aspect of dolls' house furnishing--from carpets to corsets and sofas to shopping bags.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-07-10
This is a book every miniaturist/needlework lover should have in his/her library. It's full of great projects for every room of the dollhouse. I highly reccomend it.
tiny treasures.......2005-09-22
simply wonderful. I spent hours just looking at the pictures showing the samples. i'm looking forward to begin my first work. Great expectations for tiny masterpieces
Wonderful book.......2004-10-04
This is a wonderful book, but I'm a little wary of giving it too good a review. The projects all look great, but I found a mistake in the first project that I tried. If you work the Turkoman rug exactly as the chart, it will not turn out the same as the picture. The border, in fact, will not even be symmetrical (as the picture is). As an experienced crafter, I picked up on this and was able to correct it, but I was disappointed to find the error in the first place. I look forward to trying other projects and hope they are error-free.
Fantastic.......2004-01-19
I expected the tiny samplers & rugs, but tiny crocheted & knitted clothing?! Excellent, excellent, excellent from beginning to end! Too many wonderful things to name.
A wonderful book.......2003-07-30
This book had nearly everything I had been looking for. I've had it for a good while and have made things from it. The patterns and instructions are clear and easy to understand. Since it was published in England there are some conversions that sometimes need to be done but the only disappointment I had was in how few crochet projects there were in the book. Even so, it inspired me to invent my own. Everything else is covered, from drapes to carpets, cushions to bed hangings. A really excellent book.

The Pre-Pregnancy Planner.......2004-05-22
This book was awful. Josleen's "professional" point of view regarding pregnancy entails babie's as being a huge inconvenience, financial drain, and resentment to your "hard-earned relationship". I felt terrible while reading this book. Fortunately, newer books and philosophies exist since she published this useless trash in 1986. I burned it because I shudder at the idea of someone else picking it up a second-hand store.
Don't let the title fool you.......2002-07-26
This book verges on scary in its heavy reality-based content designed to help you decide to have a baby (or not). If you already know you want to get pregnant, and are just looking for guidelines on the healthiest, smartest way to do it, stay away from this book. It will not psych you up or make you feel good.
Useful for considering pregnancy.......2001-05-31
I have been looking everywhere for a book that covers issues you might want to consider when just thinking about "do I have a baby or not?". Although, like many conception books, this focused heavily on the how to conceive part, almost half of it discussed issues to be aware of when trying to decide "should I have a baby?" and "if so, when is best".
The Pre-pregnancy planner is a must!.......2000-10-10
This book is the most informative book that I have ever had. This is a must for any woman planning a pregnancy.

My review will be quite simple, this book is... marvelous, magnificent, beautiful, brilliant, painful, poetic, and glorious. Read it!!!!!!!!
Cuba Libre!.......2007-04-07
Anyone can put the their life on paper, but few such endeavors are worth reading. A fine memoir must come alive, must breathe, must sweat, must bleed, must become flesh and blood and acquire a `life` beyond that of its creator. A memoir worth reading (more than once) must become a Frankenstein. Reinaldo Arenas` supremely moving and magical autobiographical journey has become just that, a freakish, terrifying and stunningly gorgeous creation that will carry the memory of its creator well into the future. If Arenas had never written anything else, `Before Night Falls` would have been enough to rocket its author into the pantheon of literary greats.
When I first devoured this book more than ten years ago, it gripped me like some nagging fever. I just couldn`t put it down, nor put its collection of macabre images and revealing epiphanies out of mind. Coming back to it once again, I was amazed that its power and pathos can still hold the reader spellbound. And what exactly is the secret of its magic? The answer lays with Arenas`s unflinching desire to lay himself bare before the reader, completely shorn of the disingenuous veils through which we all like to see ourselves and be seen by others. Arenas makes no such attempt to airbrush his forty-seven years of life into a pretty portrait for posterity. Instead, he gives us what was and nothing more.
But was, was truly a life lived to the full. As full as possible within the Island prison of Fidel Castro. When the first page begins with little Reinaldo expelling a painful and ferocious stomach worm (the result of too much dirt eating!), the die is cast. Page after page, Arenas documents his impoverished upbringing within the wilds of Eastern Cuba. With his stark and matter-of-fact diction, Arenas shades nothing. Yet, through the very simplicity of his language, the images of his magical youth do achieve something of that overused phenomenon within Latin American letters, `magical realism.` Whether describing his lonely and forsaken mother, superstitous grandmother or lecherous grandfather, Arenas` tiny familial world comes alive like that of a Marquez novel. And everpresent throughout are the forces of nature, the rich, luxurious island fauna, the extremes of rain and sun and especially, the powerful and mysterious Caribbean. Throughout his life, the sea remained a mythic and revered instrument of freedom for Arenas, always enticing and prodding him to abandon his island prison, which he eventually did in 1980 with the Mariel exodus.
And in a book where the forces of nature play a central role, sexuality is omnipresent. Arenas` homosexuality was central to who he was as a man and as a writer, and he lived a life many would deem promiscuous at the very least. With seering intensity and unmatched candor, Arenas catalogues his sexual history like few have done before. From the group encounters with his childhood playmates (even a few animals) to the legions of encounters and partners in adulthood, Arenas leaves no stone unturned in documenting the importance of sex in his life. Yet, Arenas` lusty descriptions of his extraordinary erotic life are neither strictly prurient nor solely for voyeuristic thrill. Instead, one feels the palpable, if albeit transitory, joy that the erotic held for Arenas. While some parts of the book will be hard going for the puritan, the arm-chair psychotherapist will have a field day constructing theories as to the source of Arenas` grandiose appetites. Yet, Arenas` makes no excuses nor explanations for his behavior, rather he documents what was, without blinders, without shame.
Like in Kundera`s Czechoslovakia, Arenas` Cuba was/is a place of profound spiritual, emotional and physical suffering. A place where the `state` forced its way into every perimeter of human existence. Sexual expression, along with artistic expression, was the only way of asserting any individual autonomy. But even this was/is controlled and oppressed by the all-compassing arms of Castro`s revolutionary state. Arenas suffered persecution and torture for both his uncompromising sexual autonomy and for his individual artistic voice. Branded a `degenerate` and `counter-revolutionary,` Arenas paid a heavy price for his refusal to conform. Some of `Before Night Falls` most endearing and moving passages involve Arenas` internment in the infamous `El Morro` concentration camp.
While the constant references to the Cuban literary milieu and its inhabitants can confuse the reader (who informed on who!), they never wholly detract from the fluidity of the narrative nor from the power of the voice locked within. `Before Night Falls` is like a boulder rolling down a steep cliff. With each page, it only gains in intensity and ferocity.
With Arenas`decision to end his richly lived and endured years, `Before Night Falls` comes to an abrupt stop. But not end, for this is truly an unfinished work. Arenas` spirit stays with the reader long after the last word is digested, feverishly waiting for his country to catch up with him.
Arenas` last words say it best, `Cuba will be free. I already am.`
A life of rebellion at the intersection of sex and literature.......2007-02-20
Many readers may have a difficult time getting past the first third of Reinaldo Arenas's memoir. Its opening chapters describe both the author's sexual awakening and his unorthodox (to say the least) adventures at the beaches and in the bushes and even in public restrooms in Cuba before and after the rise of Castro. "In spite of everything, youth in the sixties managed to conspire, not against the regime but in favor of life." He regales his readers both unashamedly and unreservedly with his exploits, and the more homogeneous audience members may be repelled by his homo-heterodoxy.
Yet these tales are an integral part of Arenas's message: in a totalitarian society, everything is an act of rebellion--even sex, which is often subversive and furtive and (in spite of any regime's puritanical attempt to control it) always available. For Arenas, his sexual prowess is of a piece with his literary expression, and his brave and headstrong need to write often overlap with his desire to be a gay man in a society that doesn't want homosexuals--or writers--to exist. The bulk of the book, dealing with his life as a writer, as a rebel, as a fugitive, as a prisoner, and as an exile, is identical in tone and spirit to the early passages about his libidinous youth.
His stubbornness is awe-inspiring. We read about the many times Arenas's manuscripts, often hidden in the roof or left with friends, were discovered and destroyed. Nevertheless, he would shirk off the dangers and re-create them from memory. The novels he managed to smuggle out of the country resulted in a slim international celebrity that made him a pariah of the government yet immunized him from becoming simply a political prisoner. After his arrest, he confessed to "ideological weaknesses," but his public trial was for sexual offences. "By convicting me of a common crime, they would avoid an international scandal," and the court condemned him as "a counterrevolutionary and an immoral person [who] should be sentenced for corruption of minors." (It is almost beside the point that the two swarthy "victims," both of whom recanted their testimony at the trial out of embarrassment, were hardly minors.) All of Arenas's battles were fought at the intersection of sex and literature.
Arenas has little good to say about the Batista era, but his recollections are a bracing and much-needed rebuttal to those who make apologies for the Castro regime. He reserves his bitterness especially for fellow writers like Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Alejo Carpentier who have helped prop up Castro with an aura of respectability. He reminds us that Carpentier wrote his best work (in exile) before 1959 but became part of a group of writers who "once they embraced the new dictatorship, never wrote anything worthwhile again."
Arenas begins his book with "The End," a chapter summarizing his final struggle with AIDS and acknowledging the irony that after the "thousand adversities" he suffered in Cuba, "the only escape for me was death." The paradox of Arena's life is that he finally escaped his homeland, only to die in a decade by his own hand in a dingy New York City apartment. Repression, imprisonment, and torture couldn't destroy him in a land that liberty forgot, but the fight ended once he reached the land of the free.
it aint pretty.......2007-01-11
No pretty prose passages, no magical realism, no lovable eccentrics. Thank God. This isn't Marquez or Allende. This is true life, sonny Jim, dirty, brutal, hilarious, dark and unrepentant. This is a great book filled with creations, copulations, imprisonments, escapes, knife fights, love affairs and a deep, deep love of a rich beautiful Cuba that one day Arenas hopes will be free from tyranny.
Arenas hates what Castro and his cronies did to him and the island. He shows us the secret police, the prisoners, the informers, the labor camps all in intense and sometimes horrifying detail. He levels his wrath at deluded pro Castroites in the United States and Latin America and doesnt hold back from accusing fellow writers (including Marquez, Carpentier and Paz) of being stooges of the Castro brothers.
I personally could have done without the AIDS conspiracy theories and the copious beastiality, but that doesnt detract from a terrific book.
real people with dirt on their feet.......2006-09-02
If you're sick of cute little stories that follow some godforsaken formula, you might get some juices flowing with this book. I can count on my fingers all the books I've read that resulted in what I would call "an experience." This is one of them.

Only the best books I ever read...........2002-11-18
This series is the best I have ever read. I re-read these two books every year around Christmas and enjoy them even more each time. Although it has been pointed out that the editing was not up to par (which I agree), it didn't take away from the story for me. The tale is very accurate historically and I have learned much from it. Aside from being interesting factually, I was completely wrapped up in the story line of the characters. Since the books focus on more than just one or two people, they effectively held my attention and kept me reading. I recommend these books to everyone.
Before Night Fall, by Maryann Minatra........1999-10-30
I gave this book five stars because I loved this book I found it tasteful and exciting. I fell in love with all the characters. And I found this book romantic while not racy. I learned a lot about World War II, while it didn't push the facts on me. But I did find this book slightly slow, but a lot of fun to read. All in all I think it was a great book and everyone should read it.
Good story, poor editing.......1999-07-17
This was a terrific story, but I thought that it was very poorly edited. There were numerous mistakes, including lack of commas and quotation marks (especially commas), misspelled words, and confusion of characters. (For example, at one point the story was about Elaina, and suddenly it called her Emilie.) I also agree with the person who reviewed this book before me, who said that there are not many religious themes in this book. However, I must say that the story itself was good, and I would recommend the book to anyone who can overlook the fact that, if it was edited at all, it was done very poorly!
A Very Entertaining Read.......1998-04-20
This book was great! It is the story of a wealthy German who helps smuggle Jews out of pre-World War II Germany while fooling his friends and family pretending to be a firm Nazi. I enjoyed the complex plot and the tension between the hero and heroine. Though it is set in a depressing era of history, Minatra manages to keep the story optimistic. The romantic story is very entertaining. The only flaw I can find is that for a Christian romance, this book doesn't have as many religious themes as the sequel.
Book Description
These essays of Prof. Panikkar written in the last ten years reflect on the myriad ways in which the Sangh Parivar has pursued a facsist agenda, particularly in the cultural and political realms. They also attempt to understand the reasons for the inability of the secular forces to stem the tide of communalism and explore the possible ways in which a counter cultural movement can be initiated. A must read for all in order to reiterate the fuller agenda for secularism afresh if it is to be a presence in Indian political and social life.
