I have Hepatitis C and I have read every book that Amazon sells on the subject of Hepatitis C and then some. This is a gem, the best, most objective information you will find out there. I appreciate the fact that the authors are open to alternative treatments but most importantly they are not puppets for the pharmaceutical industry. Great care needs to be taken when reading the extreme approaches to treating HCV. On the one hand you have internationally renowned hepatologists who liken the side effects of milk thistle to interferon and on the other hand, those who give you outright dangerous advice like Shark Cartilage & Colloidial Silver treatments. "Living Healthy with Hepatitis C" provides well-balanced, good advice. I also recommend the PDR for Supplements and the PDR for Herbal Medicines.

Authoritative and warm.......2001-01-26

This book struck exactly the right chord for the hepatitis C sufferer who is feeling overwhelmed but wants scientifically rigorous information in a form that he or she can use. It is full of clear, factual answers to the question every hep C positive person has, with the scientific bases explained well but in a nonintimidating way.

But it also tackles those thornier questions of how to find a doctor who shares your personal style, how to avoid the "snake oil" faction of alternatives while making sure your lifestyle supports your chances for getting well and how to increase your chances of a successful liver transplant if you need one It's pragmatic and positive.

Yikes!.......2005-01-04

Another Martha wannabe, but without the taste. Or the respect for her readers.

Instead it's page after page of weird-for-the-sake-of-weird design elements and forced cutesyness.

Personally, I found nothing in this book I could use. Basically, it pretty much begins and ends at sticking sequins, beads, glitter, feathers etc. on every object and surface in the dining room, including the dishes and flatware. Apparently, Ms. Porter has never met a guest who objected to getting feathers in his food. I can only assume she has a wide acquaintance among six-year-old girls.

So, if YOU are a six-year-old girl, and your parents let you play with hot glue guns, you may enjoy this book. Adults may wish to look elsewhere.

THIS COULD INSPIRE YOUR LIFE.......2004-06-15

I loved this book and have reåd it three times already but barely scratched the surface. If you are creatively inclined, it will spark many ideas for other areas in your life. It is one of those books that will inspire ideas for everything from kids projects to song titles to ideas for romantic evenings. By reading this book, I have already made a list of really affordable and creative x-mas gifts for my family and friends and it is June! What a fun and inspiring read!

Some inspiration.......2003-01-07

There are some good ideas in here for being prepared for entertaining. I also like the idea of trying to decorate and entertain with a vision that is "outside of the box". But, let's face it. Most of us do not have a life like Tracy Porter and her husband....not the money, not the resources, etc. It was fun to look anyhow. We can all wish.

I prefer this book to "Dreams from Home".......2002-04-01

While I thoroughly enjoyed "Dreams..." I prefer Inspired Gatherings enough to give the gift of this book. I thought that many of the ideas were much more stealable than in the previous book which has a much more 'I did this!' air to it. (not meaning to imply it puts on airs but merely that it is a book about the unusual art project that is her house) I enjoyed the lists of fairly simple items she keeps on hand to glam things up. I was able to assemble many of them from around the house into one box that I kept nearby last Christmas to beautify packages. I was frequently asked to bring along the box o' glitz when packages would be wrapped. I used snow-like glitter with such abandon that we bought the huge tub for next year at the year end clearance. All in all I thought the book was a total hit and am thoroughly pleased with myself for buying it.

Inspirational, Yet Lacking In Balance.......2000-07-12

At first read, I was delighted with this book in that kid-at-Christmas way. It is very inspiring, filled with lush photos that will draw you in and ideas to inspire your own creative gatherings. However, my only scruple with it is that it seems very separate from the reality that I and countless other people here on earth are experiencing on a daily basis. Hearing the phrase "dream with your eyes open" is certainly poetic and original, but how can that be related in practical terms to things like: a frustrating daily commute, or turning one's dreams into one's daily reality? I'd like to hear more about what Tracy feels and more examples from her own life experiences vs. her ideas on how I should be living my life. The back leaf mentions Tracy and her husband John "staying open to every delight, whim, and fancy" in the world of business. Huh?! Is the reader to believe that they've created a multi-million dollar company only through adhering to this philosophy? I am an optimist with my feet on the ground, who practices living life in the balance between rose-colored glasses and the nitty gritty. In future writings, I'd like to hear more about other facets of life from this talented artist.

Stencil artists extraordinaire Linda Buckingham and Leslie Bird have hit upon a truly brilliant approach to their subject that enables even novices to create high-quality, large-scale designs. Their method entails covering the paintable surface with freezer paper (adhered with stencil spray adhesive), projecting the image onto the paper using an overhead or slide projector, and tracing the design onto the paper. Each design element is then color-coded and cut out one color at a time. In effect, the usually complex process of producing wall murals is reduced to the simplicity of a paint-by-number scheme. The 40 step-by-step projects include materials lists, color codes, color photos of the finished work, and complete gridded patterns of each design, so even if you don't have access to any of the various projectors adaptable to this process (though they can be rented for surprisingly little), you can still follow the technique using the old-fashioned grid-transfer method.

Not only is Buckingham and Bird's approach ingenious, but their designs are stunning, and greatly varied in style. They fill walls with schools of tropical fish, a soaring Pegasus, peaceful landscapes, an airborne snowboarder, the cow jumping over the moon, a dozing tiger. I had never thought of stenciling in this way. I have made my own stencils in the past using acetate or paper, but I never thought of making whole scenes in this way. I probably won't create any of her particular projects, but by the instructions she gives for doing them, I am able to use the same techniques for my ideas. It really opened my eyes to a new way of doing things.

This book widened my perception of stenciling. Previously I thought of stencilingf as a neat, precise, predictable repeated pattern. A craft to add embellishment to a piece of furniture or a border around a room. When I first flipped through the pages of this book it was hard to believe I was looking at stenciling. If this process at first looks difficult, don't be fooled. Clear step-by-step instructions walk you through the process. I found once I had done a few projects from the book I was ready to produce my own original artwork. This book is a nice addition to the library of any decorative painter and a must for the wannabe artist.

OK If You Are Looking For Projects.......2002-09-20

I was disappointed in this volume, only because it contained very little instruction, but instead demonstrated the techniques through projects. If you want a grand and slightly garish display of zebras or dolphins on your walls, this is the book for you. If you are trying to learn how to enlarge something and create stencils from it, you can probably find more information elsewhere.

This is one of the better "how to" books I have ever read. The patterns are provided so that you may actually create the items shown and enough direction is given so that you can easily use what you have learned to create many more projects of your own.

Beautiful Pictures.......2000-05-02

The pictures alone are worth more than what I paid for this book, and there are pictures on nearly every page. Complete and thorough descriptions of both roller stenciling and the projection method have me anxious to attempt my first project.

An intimate portrait of Harry Chapin by his good friend.......2007-05-03

To anyone who remembers the music industry of the 70's (or anyone who has read Harry Chapin's lyrics, for that matter), the fact that he wasn't always faithful to his wife will come as no great surprise.

Those reviewers who feel the book treats Chapin's widow, Sandy, unfairly puzzle me, however. In fact, Coan portrays her as the main catalyst for the humanitarian efforts which would become Harry's focus.

Sadly, immediately after Harry's death, Sandy Chapin abruptly ended her friendship with the author and attempted to legally block the release of this book and claim ownership of the author's extensive notes, recordings and other research. It is only here that Coan describes her in anything less than a fully objective light. (And who can fault him for that?)

No, Chapin wasn't a saint. Few men have come closer to being deserving of that title, however. This is an exhaustively researched and fascinating book. It has the "ring of truth" throughout, and it is must-read for anyone interested in learning more about this fascinating musician and humanitarian who left us far too soon.

Not unbearable, but not even close to "good", either.......2007-02-06

Peter Coan's biography is fairly interesting, yet only to a certain extent. I believe biographies, if they're good, pull you, the reader in, leaving you satisfied and wanting to read-on. Unfortunately, in my opinion, Coan does not accomplish this.

The main issue I had with this book was that Coan's paragraphs seemed more like paragraphs of statistics. Even if Coan does explore emotional/personal aspects of Chapin (i.e. Chapin did not get along with his stepfather), he rarely comes close to injecting those "emotional aspects" with the style needed in order for it to be a good biography.

That having been said, the book is not a total disaster, for some parts are indeed interesting, But, for the mosst part, I believe I can say with assurance that this is a book I will not "come back to" that often.

Coan's writing style and self-absorbed attitude does not do his subject justice.......2006-05-01

An accurate sub-title to this book might be: "How I screwed Sandy Chapin", as the author continually makes disparaging remarks about her. There's an irony in this author fairly gloating over the fact that he won a lawsuit against her for attempting to halt the publication of this book and then, as he mentions the lawsuit she won against the trucking company who's vehicle stuck Harry's car, suggests that she donate some of the funds to WHY-because "They could use the money".
Whatever bug Coan has up his posterior gets in the way of his biography of a fascinating, insightful and very human man we knew. It's my hope that the family, who continues Harry's causes, will one day write a better biography than this.

The energy of Harry is not hereý.........2002-03-12

After reading "Taxi", I was glad it was over. The novel is good for historical information and what Harry did, but does not hold any entertainment value (I only enjoyed the factual information in this book, rather than it being fun to read). This biography was poorly written and contained many typographical errors. If you are interested in Harry and his life, I do suggest reading this piece, for it has many enlightening facts. Those of you who are interested in enlightenment, I suggest reading a Western Civilizations text book from the 1950's, it will have comparative entertainment value to that of "Taxi."

Harry still Rules!.......2002-01-22

If you are a Harry Chapin fan this is a must read. Even if you aren't a Harry Chapin fan, you just might be after reading this account of his interesting and amazing life. This is not a puff piece. This shows Harry for what and who he really was. It was one of the few books that I have ever read that was hard for me to put down after I had read for awhile. His early life and tragic death are clarified. Some of the later chapers are a little dull when it goes on in too much detail about his charitable works. However, overall, I rate this as a 5 star book.
