Book Description
This is the biography of one of the most original and widely significant, yet largely forgotten, British scientists. Frederick Soddy is an intriguing figure who was deeply concerned with and involved in politics, economics, and the role of science in the world. He was one of the first generation of English atomic scientists, working with Rutherford on the initial discoveries about atomic disintegration, and received the Nobel Prize in 1921 for hi research on isotopes. Soddy's worry about the responsibility of science and scientists to society began with his fear that the atomic energy he and Rutherford had discovered could be disastrous if suitable political controls were not enforced, and led to his abandoning scientific research. He lived to see his worst fears realized with the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Soddy was a pioneer in the field of energy conservation and environmental ethics, and was committed to social reform. Frederick Soddy was a remarkable and talented man who was not recognized as such in his own life-time, largely because his ideas and attitudes did not fit in with the times in which he lived. However he has become more appreciated since his death, not only because his scientific work has gained its rightful recognition, but also because of the increased awareness today of the environment and the role of science in it.

Quick answers to parent's most baffling moments
The Baffled Parent's Guide to Sibling Rivalry provides parents with quick, sound advice on how to keep relative peace in the family. Organized for easy-access by topics that provoke the most arguments among siblings-such as room sharing and borrowing toys, as well as issues related to step and half siblings-these quick and effective solutions help parents sort through how and when to intervene.
Customer Reviews:
Cogent, sage & practical advice: Priceless........2003-10-16
AT last -- A well organized, easy-to-read and practical guide to coping with sibling rivalry! Full of wit and humor, this book lays out the most common areas of friction between kids growing up together, explains what's really going on, and provides expert and practical advice on what to do. There isn't just one solution; parents are encouraged to choose the approach that works for them.
As the mother of four, Marian Edelman Borden has had plenty of experience with her subject -- and somehow survived it. Her humor and clearheadedness shine through in her writing, and her sage, down-to-earth advice is -- well -- priceless.
If you're a parent, this book is a MUST. It wouldn't hurt siblings of any age to read it, too.
Helpful for a mother of three!.......2003-10-14
This book really helped me not only understand, but also deal with sibling rivalry. The author offers good solutions for overcoming what can be a devisive issue in many homes. I have put what I learned from this book into practice and believe that is has made a positive difference in our family dynamics.
Wonderful Parents' Guide to Brokering the Peace.......2003-10-10
This book offered very helpful practical advice, with a welcome touch of humor, on daily life with squabbling kids. The author's tips and tricks for ending the inevitable fights over sharing rooms, celebrating a sibling's birthday, and resolving holiday hassles, get right to the heart of the problem. Best of all, the solutions she offers work! Ms. Borden also tackles serious topics such as academic competition among siblings, blended families, and the difficulties faced by a sibling who has a brother or sister with a chronic illness or disability. In all cases, she presents families with options that they can adapt to their needs.
"My three sons".......2003-10-10
With three sons who are incapable of keeping their hands off one another, Ms. Borden's book has been a godsend. Helping me to understand when and when not to get involved and realizing that the rivalry does indeed teach them many lessons has been most valuable. Ms. Borden's style of writing is both informative and extremely enjoyable. A must for anyone with more than one child!!
A Very Helpful Book.......2003-10-08
As the part-time working mother of two very active and competitive sons, I found Borden's advice very wise and helpful, as well as entertaining. Her scenarios and suggestions are right on the mark. All parents have problems dealing with sibling rivalry, and it's important to admit it. It won't just "go away;" what you learn here is how to deal with it.
For example - if your kids (like mine) are close in age, and the same sex, it's important to teach them to "fight fair." It's also important not to get overly involved with the details of their arguments, and not to become hostile yourself (which is understandable... if it's 6 PM and you haven't started dinner yet!) Borden says kids whose parents are overly critical and argumentative will imitate their behavior, rather than try to do better.
I came away from this book with new ideas and tips, as well as a personal pat on the back for things I've been doing well all along. I also loved the little sidebars written in the margins, which were a refreshing mix of old and new information.

Cooking Light Low-Fat Low Calorie Quick and Easy Cookbook.......2000-11-16
These recipes definately save fat, calories and time. The meals taste great and you don't feel like you are sacrificing on taste. Some recipes do take a little more time than the book states but they are well worth it. I also like that they break down the calories by what percent come from fat. I like the recipe tips offered in the book as well as how the book is broken down by desserts, meatless, fish, etc. This is a winner which I will send to my friends.
Customer Reviews:
Doesn't taste low fat or low cal............2005-05-23
I plan my weekly menus from this book every Sunday morning. There is something in there for every day of the week.... chicken, beef, pork, seafood and even pasta..... all low fat and low calorie. The recipes are so easy and the ingredients are typically your normal kitchen staples with an occassional item added to the normal shopping list.
There's nothing like getting home after a long day at work and still having to make dinner. That's where the Quick & Easy part comes in. These recipes make getting dinner on the table a snap. Usually with-in 30 minutes or less.
You can't go wrong with this book. Every recipe is easy to follow and tasts great. We haven't made 1 thing in the past 4 months that we did not enjoy and we cook from these cookbooks everyday. I had several other cookbooks where I had written on pages "YUCK!" or "NO GOOD" when I've tried a recipe and didn't like it. Not one of the Cooking Light recipes have I done this to. I've since thrown away all the cookbooks I had that are not Cooking Light.
I own 17 other Cooking Light cookbooks, some have easier recipes than others, but this one is my favorite. The taste of the meal is as if you had ordered it from a very good restaurant. My husband and I recently went on a cruise and he said "I like your cooking from those cookbooks better than the cruise food". What more can I say? Buy it, you'll love the way you look and feel. Slimmer and healthier.
Outstanding Taste & Real Time Saver.......2003-04-20
This book has by far the easiest and best-tasting recipies. It is perfect for a small family who are health concious and prefer spending time together rather than in the kitchen. The meals are so flavorfully creative and my family just loves everything that comes out of this book. The best part is the book has great time-saving and serving suggestions that really complement each other. I would recommend it to everyone.

Food that is lowfat, easy to prepare, and very, very good........1999-01-07
My son bought this cookbook for his girlfriend because of her inexperience with cooking. They have tried many of the dishes with amazing results. New Years Eve we enjoyed Chicken Cordon Bleu from the book and it was delicious. Ingredients are readily available, simple, and best of all LIGHT. I am getting a copy for myself before the day is out.
Customer Reviews:
A great, very interesting, read!.......2001-11-26
When I first became interested in falconry, I, like most people, wanted to learn everything I could on the subject. This book covers several aspects of falconry, such as the history and the raptors used in it, and moves on to many personal stories. This is NOT a "how-to" book. Bodio has delivered a wonderfully entertaining and quite creatively written book that I highly recommend to any aspiring or long-time falconer. You won't be disappointed!
--Lauren
A Passion for Raptors.......2000-06-16
Stephen Bodio is one of my favorite writers--definitely my favorite nature writer--and this books captures the essence of the ancient sport of falconry. This is not a manual; it's an essay that helps to explain why anyone would go through so much effort just to share in the privilege of hunting in partnership with a wild animal. (No other modern sport allows one to do this.)This is a book that can be read and enjoyed by anyone, falconer or not, but the falconer will appreciate some of the insights Bodio has--for instance, when he describes the infamous goshawk. I recommend this to anyone who wants to learn what falconry is, or who is seriously considering taking up hawks. It is fun, it is informative, and it will stay with you for a long time.
Wonderful overview.......1998-03-02
Mr. Bodio has written an outstanding overview of modern falconry. He manages to convey what it is about falconry that makes falconers put up with the heartache of hunting with raptors. As a bonus, Mr. Bodio's writing is a joy to read. It is both funny and informative. This is definitely *not* a how-to book, but instead gives a good overview of what falconry is like, and what a prospective falconer can expect.

Not at the Top of My Gardening List.......2004-12-26
Everything You Need to Know About Gardening (EYNTKAG) is a little gardening book with attitude. Its chapters boast topics such as garden design, container gardening, soil, feeding, pruning, pests, flowers and a gardening calendar. I had high hopes for this little book with a rather conceited title.
After the intro's mini class on plant biology, the information presented are not hard and fast rules. The writers advise new gardeners to relax and be prepared to break some rules. One of the best chapters is Pruning. There are great diagrams and descriptions providing lots of useable understandable technical data for any newbie.
EYNTKAG is loaded with lots of colourful, beautiful, sharp photographs. The problem is most of them are unlabelled. Most viewers, not just would-be-gardeners want to know what the plants are. The photos leave you wondering what they are, which is quite annoying especially for a new gardener.
Another problem is the lack of common names. The botanical names are used in most if not all instances. If the book is to be for beginners then common names would have been helpful and possibly recognizable. One of the reasons sited later in the book, is the use of different common names for different regions. Regardless a familiar common name would provide better comprehension than an unrecognizable botanical name.
For pests and diseases there is much talk of the bad bugs but nothing about what they look like. Many of the soil techniques illustrated aren't effective or doable with existing gardens. This book is truly for the green gardener starting from scratch. Even then, I'd be hard pressed to recommend this book over the Reader's Digest Illustrated Guide to Gardening. That being said there are useful bits of information buried in the text, but if you were trying to use this for a reference manual you might miss them.
My greatest complaint is the lack of common sense in regard to offending the readers. I did not appreciate some of the comments like, "If you cut further away from the base of each main stem than 30cm, you're a big girl's blouse and your roses will look silly." A big girl's blouse? As if that wasn't bad enough, a little later when discussing the pruning of nut trees: "A woman, a dog and a walnut tree, the more you beat them, the better they be." Maybe it's the culture differences but the comments/sayings whatever you want to call them seem inappropriate, rude and lack common sense for this day and age.
I guess if you made it this far you can tell EYNTKAG is not at the top of my gardening list. If you happen to pass it in your bookstore travels have a gander at the photos then buy Reader's Digest Illustrated Guide to Gardening. It's bigger and clunkier but filled to the rim with useful information.

Book Description
Worldwide, some 200 million people are afflicted with enlargement of the thyroid gland, and undiagnosed thyroid disorder is frequently the root of many common health complaints. Once diagnosed, however, the majority of thyroid disorders can be treated safely, easily, and without anxiety.
Unfortunately, the patient's inability to grasp the seriousness and impact of thyroid malfunction often leads to unwarranted anxiety and an unwillingness to seek treatment. This new edition of Thyroid Disease: The Facts has been completely rewritten and embraces many important treatment advances. In
a refreshing, accessible format, the volume provides information about all types of thyroid disorder for patients, their friends, and their families. New sections have been added to answer questions frequently asked by thyroid patients. From the basic description of normal thyroid functioning and
its critical role in the human organism, to the diagnosis of specific problems associated with thyroid disorder, the book presents a comprehensive overview that clarifies many areas of patient concern. There are chapters on overactivity and underactivity of the thyroid, enlargement of the thyroid,
cancer of the thyroid, thyroid problems during pregnancy, and other disorders and diseases of the thyroid. This nontechnical handbook provides a key reference for both professionals and general readers interested in understanding the complex function of this important body system.

Book Description
In the past decade, there has been increasing recognition of thyroid diseases as a common health problem. While there have been few major new advances in treatment, there is much greater understanding of why thyroid disorders occur and the long-term health effects of thyroid disease. As people with thyroid disease begin to know more about their disorder, they are able to co-operate better with treatment and their anxieties about the problem can be significantly reduced. This fourth edition of Thyroid Disease: The Facts provides a reader-friendly source of information and reassurance for those people with thyroid disorders and their families. The book covers the wide range of conditions associated with thyroid dysfunction, from simple goitre to more complex disorders such as Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This edition also includes several completely new chapters, including one specifically devoted to thyroid disorders in infants, children and adolescents. Each chapter concludes with a useful Question and Answer section.

Book Description
Best known as the author of the wildly innovative runaway bestseller, Pat the Bunny, Dorothy Kunhardt was not only a successful children's writer, but also a respected Lincoln scholar and biographer, and an inveterate chronicler of life. Until she died in 1979, she recorded everything about herself-her early loves, her feelings about marriage, family, career, grief, and ultimately the degeneration that age can bring to the mind and spirit. Using these records and letters, and his own research and memories, Dorothy's son gives readers a deeply moving account of a unique, passionate, and creative life well spent.
Customer Reviews:
A Compelling Love Letter From Son to Mother.......2005-11-26
Throughout "The Dreaming Game" I felt as if I were eavesdropping on a very private conversation rather than reading. The book is a wonderful, compelling love letter to the woman who changed the world of childrens' books forever from her oldest son and is full of personal detail of her mind and heart, foibles and fantasies.
Known to most of us as the author and creator of "Pat the Bunny", Dorothy Kunhardt lived a much broader life outside the boundaries of the interactive literature genre she created virtually single-handedly built and created a well-respected name in Lincoln biography and photographic research. Born to an affluent family and married into the scion of an even better-off textile-producing family (soon to fall on hard times) Mrs. Kunhardt was much more than a debutant out to earn her MRS degree, she was a force of nature. After having read the book, I am not sure if she would have considered herself a trail-blazer and yet that is what she was - creating paths where none existed, taking bold risks and hatching crazy schemes to give her husband and children the life she wanted for them and herself the internal life of the mind she craved.
Any woman who wondered to herself if she could make a go of some or other interest for both love and money will find a kindred spirit in the pages of Philip Kunhardt's tenderly written and unblinking biography.

An Uplifting Tale of Holocaust Survival and Mentality.......1999-08-29
What I liked so much about the book is that it combines the best of journalism -- that of a vivid eyewitness account of unusual and often highly dramatic events -- with the best of literary writing, as a complex, engrossing, and beautifully written work. On New Year's Eve 1939, the teenage narrator is sent to her father in Vienna by the grandparents who have raised her, so that they can emigrate together. They do not succeed until she leaves, alone, in 1947, and the book describes her life during those eight years. Though it is a Holocaust account, I found the book not only gripping but almost uplifting. The narrator is Jewish but does not wear the star, and so she is both victim and bystander in the nightmarish world of Hitler's wartime Vienna. She describes persecutions, deprivations, and bomb attacks from this dual perspective, and finally also the battle for Vienna and the Russian occupation. Initially, she is a typical 15-year-old, sensitive and naïve, unselfish and self-absorbed, timid and reckless. What saves her seems to be her instinctive craving to "have a life", as she painfully and pluckily clings to the trivia of a "normal" existence even during those abnormal times. Thus she emerges at 23 -- or, at any rate, some fifty years later when she narrates the book -- as a sane, well-adjusted and life-affirming human being. The book is, at least in my view, superior to many other Holocaust memoirs because of the skill with which the author -- a professor of literature -- explores past and present, interweaving the eyewitness account of the participant teenage girl (authenticated by many direct diary quotes) and the observations of her adult self, which, half a century later, not only situates her childhood in the relevant historical context, but also analyzes her youthful self dispassionately, even critically, and thereby draws a complex and thought-provoking portrait of at least one survivor's mentality.
