The Wrong Stuff : The Adventures and Misadventures of an 8th Air Force Aviator
ASIN: 1553695232 |
Book Description
The following are the combined personal diaries of the last World War II combat flight crew of the Boeing B-17-F Flying Fortress named "Out House Mouse". Each of these diaries has been transcribed from the original or from a first generation copy of the original provided to me by the crewmember or his immediate family.
My father was 1Lt. E.J. ("Joe") Harvey, the pilot on this crew and it was the transcription of his diary that began this project. Lt. Harvey's notes were hand-printed in block capital letters and an effort has been made to retain that personality in this transcription. For each combat mission, Lt. Harvey also included carefully cut and folded newspaper accounts, which have also been transcribed and where possible, the source newspaper identified. An effort has been made to duplicate the newsprint type, column size and position as much as possible to retain the look of his original diary.
From his diary, I learned the names of the other members of his crew and their hometown at that time. Using that information, I've been able to locate all the members of the crew or their family. Six others have provided me with copies of their diary for which I am most grateful and I have included transcriptions of these diaries in this combined record. Because Lt. Harvey provided an entry for every day, even when not flying, and because his diary covers the greatest period of time, from the first of January through the middle of June 1945, his diary provides the date stamp and serves as the basis for all of the other records.
This combined chronological record includes the seven available records of all 9 members of this last combat crew of the "Out House Mouse". Thus, this record includes the diary of 2Lt. Phil Darby, the co-pilot, provided by Mr. Darby; the diary of 2Lt. Marty Raber, the bombardier who actually sent me his original diary and his scrapbook for my use in preparing this book; the diary of 2Lt. Paul Katz, the navigator for the crew, provided by his wife, Joan Katz; the diary of S/Sgt Niel C. Jorgenson, the crew's flight engineer, which has been provided by his daughter, Ms. Susan Lunt who also provided the computer scans of the photographs of the flight crew and their signatures at the beginning of this book. The remaining records are the "Mission Sheets" of the ball turret gunner, S/Sgt George H. Odenwaller and the diary of the tail-gunner S/Sgt Walter M. Limberger. Both of these gentlemen provided me with a hand-written reproduction of their diary. The last record of course is that of Lt. Harvey from which all of this has grown. Following the entries of the pilot and co-pilot, the entries from the other five diaries are arranged in a nose-to-tail order of that crewmember's position aboard the "Out House Mouse".
Each of these records is separated from the others by a break line (----) with each contributing member identified. In addition, the individual contributions also use a different type font. A sincere effort has been made to replicate the handwriting and format the diarist used in each of the original records. For example, while most of the diary authors established a format for reporting the specific important facts of their missions and recorded these facts in hand-printed letters, Paul Katz wrote his diary in long-hand using a narrative style and addressed it to his wife, Joan. Consequently, for Lt. Katz, I chose a script font to replicate the transcription of his diary. "Mission days" are preceded by a small pilot's wing prior to the diary date and conclude with the transcription of the newspaper account (or accounts) that Lt. Harvey had so carefully cut, folded, and pasted into his diary. Photographs from these articles have been electronically scanned and reproduced here.

Book Description
Carl Jung: Wounded Healer of the Soul is a spiritual biography of one of the most important figures of the twentieth century, a man whose ideas revolutionized modern psychology. Through over 150 full-color and black and white illustrations, including rare photographs and never-before-seen artwork by Jung himself, his life and work comes vividly to life. By combining Jung’s voice with the impressions of his contemporaries, author Claire Dunne gives the reader a multi-dimensional view of this complex genius. A book that will deepen and expand the understanding of both novice and expert.
“Claire Dunne’s sensitivity of feeling for her subject allows us to meet Jung in all his diverse complexity — his contradictions and paradox, human failings and strength, his greatness and creativity. We meet a man at once transparent to transcendence but also earthy, practical, a craftsman of wood and stone as well as souls.” — From the introduction by Jean Houston.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, thoughtful, and engaging.......2006-07-14
I just finished reading Claire Dunne's portrait of Carl Jung and wanted to share what a powerful and inspiring work this is. Ms. Dunne did a wonderful job of telling the story of Jung's evolving and awakening soul as he lived his life fully as a real individual with great gifts and real shortcomings. The book really reflects both the real earthiness of Jung "the peasant" and the highest and deepest explorations of Jung the genius and truthseeker. More than anything else, it seems to me, that you cannot be in the presence of Carl Jung (either in person or through the skillful help of this author) without feeling, as the poet Helena Henderson is quoted in the book, "Above all I remember someone who, by his every word and action, gave one the feeling that life is a good thing--something even more precious to me than anything he put on paper." (p. 109) The book has really blessed me, and it will be one I turn to again and again. I hope others enjoy it as much as I have.
Powerful visuals and .......2005-07-26
This is the Jung book to have at hand, whether one is a 'Jungian', a seeker after individuation, or an artist. Ms. Dunn has brought us the humanity of Dr. Carl Jung, bringing us into his life and making his work accessible. It is richly illustrated. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
A lovely life, beautifully pictured.......2003-03-11
This is a beautiful book. I expected that, but there isn't an index, so it is difficult for me to see at a glance what else I might learn from this book. The notes are extremely brief, mainly to give page numbers in MEMORIES, DREAMS, REFLECTIONS by C. G. Jung much more than any of his other works, or to give page numbers in the two volumes of his letters, plus THE FREUD/JUNG LETTERS, and the compilation published by The Analytical Psychology Club of San Francisco, Inc. in 1982, C. G. JUNG, EMMA JUNG, TONI WOLFF. In the contents at the beginning, we find that in Part 1, Wounded, there are two pages for "Toni," and in Part 2, Healer, pages 101-05 for "Helpers: Emma, Toni," and in Part 3, Of the Soul, pages 141-47 for "Answer to Job" and pages 169-172 for "Toni," who died suddenly in her sleep at the age of 65. The caption of the picture on page 170 states, "Although Jung tried to get Toni Wolff's scientific writings published after her death in 1953, as yet they remain unpublished." But sometimes things change faster than photo captions, and Jung managed to write an introduction "When Toni's STUDIES IN JUNGIAN PSYCHOLOGY was published." (p. 171). Jung destroyed "Toni's letters to him and his to her."
Shortly before Walter Kaufmann died in September, 1980, he finished work on the third volume of DISCOVERING THE MIND, which he called FREUD VERSUS ADLER AND JUNG. As a philosophy professor, Kaufmann sought sound scholarship, innovative science, a well-organized writing style, and the sort of penetrating self-knowledge that he was used to from all the work he did on Nietzsche. The first page of section 70 of his book, page 397, explains how Jung achieved success without being particularly profound, by failing in ways that enhanced his popularity, a strategy that ultimately might be considered more professional than scientists can claim to be. He quotes Jung as someone who, "much more even than Adler, became a guru" to a group that expects professionalism above all: "About a third of my cases are not suffering from any clinically definable neurosis, but from the senselessness and aimlessness of their lives. . . . Over two thirds of my patients are in the second half of life."
As a mere philosophy professor, Kaufmann never benefited from having a consistent publisher for his own work, though coming out in paperback made it possible for his translations of Nietzsche to be fully successful. Most of his page 397 is about books. "Among Jung's patients were wealthy American women, eager to do something for the cause. Eventually, the publication of his collected works, in English and German, was subsidized, and the volumes were produced very beautifully and underpriced, and then also made available in extremely attractive paperbacks." Though CARL JUNG: WOUNDED HEALER OF THE SOUL/ AN ILLUSTRATED BIOGRAPHY by Claire Dunne (who was born in Ireland, lived in Australia, and founded two Australian multicultural radio stations) is not entirely the work of women, it is as attractive as any that could describe itself as "--the book is itself a work of art, the kind of enduring tome which is picked up again and again for the pleasure of the eyes as well as that of the mind." (back cover, Olivier Bernier, "who directs the Van Waveren Foundation, was the first to acknowledge the manuscript with a publication development grant." Acknowledgments, p. 218).
The picture on page 104 which shows Freud and C. G. Jung standing, with Emma Jung and Toni Wolff seated in front of them at the Third International Psychoanalytic Congress, 1911, also shows an arm of Lou Andreas-Salome at the edge of the picture by Freud, as more of the same picture is displayed on page 136 in JUNG A BIOGRAPHY by Gerhard Wehr, translated from the German by David M. Weeks. The latter, hefty biography of Jung, for whom "the superindividual was paramount" (Wehr, p. 4) has an index of names on pages 539-549, with the number of listings for Toni Wolff taking 2 lines as only a few names, like Alfred Adler, Jesus Christ, and Friedrich Nietzsche do. Sigmund Freud and Aniela Jaffe each need 3 lines in the index of Wehr's book, which seems to devote much more to Jung's work than to his life. People who are more interested in what kept Jung motivated should see the picture of Toni Wolff on page 50 of Claire Dunne's book, dated December 1930. I'll bet she was about 44 years old then, when Jung was 55, and thought she was only 42. Some people aren't good with numbers, at that age, but people who are likely to buy this book don't have to be adept at math.
A penetrating examination of the man and his ideas.......2001-03-19
This wonderfully illustrated, spiritual biography of one of psychology's most original thinkers will be welcomed with enthusiasm by Jungian scholars and students. This penetrating examination of the man and his ideas which helped revolutionize psychology and our understanding of the mind is multidimensional and highly recommended.
A Work of Art.......2001-02-13
With 150 color and B&W illustrations, including some never before seen paintings from Jung's "Red Book," this biography is extremely reader-friendly and gorgeous. It's written in succinct chapters, and the artwork is stuff I'd like to frame. It's available in hardcover and softcover. Jung LIVES in this book as a human being struggling to become who he is meant to be at the deepest level...just like us.

The authors bill it as a "truly epic journey": the voyage from pregnancy through a lifetime of parenting twins. Perinatologists Connie L. Agnew, M.D., and Alan H. Klein, M.D. (also a pediatrician) incorporate a winning combination of helpful facts, educated opinion, and candid roundtable discussions--a combination that nicely maps the journey's first course for expectant parents of multiples.
Those readers familiar with the ever-popular What to Expect When You're Expecting--a mainstay for first-time parents--will be delighted to see a similar format employed here. The pregnancy and birth chapters break down into chunks of gestational weeks, outlining basic fetal development, mom's changing body, and special "transitional" issues common to each trimester. These chapters are further enhanced by pencil illustrations of the mother's pregnant body (with a peekaboo view of the developing twins) and roundtable discussions involving the authors and a panel of twins' parents.
The book's second half delves into getting through that first, tough year. While ample information on labor and delivery overlaps both halves of the book, this second section spends more time focused on the growing babies and the challenges new parents face in their relationships with their children and with each other. Again, the roundtable discussions prove quite valuable; it's always nice to read encouraging words from those who have lived through preterm delivery, sleep deprivation, and older sibling regression. Growth charts and a helpful resource guide of organizations, periodicals, and retail outlets round out the package. --Liane Thomas

Customer Reviews:
Not the best, but better than most.......2007-08-31
I still haven't found the "best" twin pregnancy book -- I think a "What to Expect Twin" guide would be the best -- but this was definately one of the better ones. The conversations were completely boring and this could use some additional illustrations in my option, but the book was a lot better than some of the others.
Okay Book, but There is a Better Twin Pregnancy Book.......2007-02-12
I found this book to be okay. "When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads" by Luke and Eberlein was MUCH more useful and helpful than this book. This book was boring and a slow read in comparison to the above mentioned book.
Very Good Medical Information.......2007-02-09
This books was written by a medical staff, and it is full of medical information. However, it doesn't sound very technical neither scaring. I enjoyed the clear style and simple words, without being too informal.
I didn't enjoyed the drawings, specially those showing the babies in mother's belly: I would prefer photos or more realistic drawins
Great Guide when Pregnant!!.......2007-01-12
I bought this book right after we found out we where having twins at 12 weeks. It has brought alot of piece of mind, seeing how the babies grow in the pictures and also the breakdown from month to month. It is easy to read and understand, I still have 10 weeks to go but we feel alot more prepared now.
Great for twin or multiple pregnancies..........2007-01-04
I bought this for my sister when she was pregnant with her twins and she was able to get tons of helpful info from it to assist in her pregnancy.

Customer Reviews:
a good simple introduction book.......2005-07-25
This is a good simple introduction book about chinchillas and their needs; simple & easy enough for older children & adults. I think it is necessary to follow thru with a more detailed book if a person is considering getting a chinchilla or need to care for a chinchilla, but this book will give you the basics to decide if you want one. I keep my copy near my chinchilla in case I'm not around and someone wants to know a little about my Lullaby.

Great photos of the cutest little hamsters!.......2007-02-22
I love this book! I originally checked this book out from our local library and loved it so much that I had to have it for my own! =o) I don't even HAVE a hamster but I got this book due to the cute photos. The text isn't as lengthy as other books about hamsters but it does have a lot of general information that is very informative and interesting especially for a first-time hamster adopter. :o) I don't think anyone would regret owning this book.

Book Description
"Because of its wide scope (infertility, miscarriage, sudden infant death, abortion, release to adoption; emotional disappointments including handicapped babies, cesareans, premature or traumatic birth; and help for grieving children), this book will help parents and care-givers understand the great burden of all loss experience." American Baby's Childbirth Educator
Customer Reviews:
An essential resource for healing from childbearing loss.......2006-05-11
Ended Beginnings is required reading for the Childbirth Education program in which I am enrolled. I had a difficult time getting through this book. As the authors state repeatedly, we are a death denying culture. An aura of fear surrounds death and the expression of grief, and most people in our culture do not know how to confront the depth of loss experienced by bereaved parents or offer any real comfort. But the authors do a beautiful job of uniting grieving parents and giving legitimacy to all kinds of childbearing losses, even the death of the dream of peaceful birth experienced by mothers whose births were traumatic and medically invasive. On some level or another, almost all of us have been touched by loss and can draw on that to connect meaningfully and compassionately with others.
The authors know personally the monumental effort it takes to heal and they offer a holistic approach. They recommend starting with the body. Most bereaved parents are suffering physically, often unable to eat or sleep, and need to devote attention to regaining their physical health before they can begin to heal emotionally. The depleted physical state often leads to illness and further childbearing losses.
I cannot say enough good things about this book. Though the subject matter is heavy and the personal anecdotes are gut-wrenchingly honest and tragic, there is a wealth of help offered within the pages of this sensitive and empathetic book.
Understanding and coping with grief and loss in childbearing.......2005-04-17
This book covers each kind of childbearing loss: infertility, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, stillbirth, sudden infant death syndrome, abortion, adoption as well as emotional disappointments: disabled babies, cesarean sections, premature and traumatic births. It also includes: loss statistics, grieving, physical and emotional impact of loss, nutrition, mental attitudes, mourning, and resolution.
Ended Beginnings Healing Childbearing Losses.......2004-01-10
This book was given to me by a friend who also had lost a child. I can't say enough about this wonderful book and how it helped me to get through the most difficult experience of my life. If you or a friend have had to endure such loss and don't know where to turn or how to help this is a good place to start. This book saved my life and probably my marriage as well.
A true help in healing.......2003-08-23
This book was one of the ones that I read after a pregnancy loss that were a real help to me. I felt my grief was validated, and that was a significant step in my healing.
very helpful after my ectopic pregnancy.......2002-12-27
You may find this book difficult (emotionally) to read but it has wonderful information and guidance that is outstanding.
It lets the reader know they are NOT losing their mind or going crazy. It helps you deal with friends/family that wish you would just get over "it" and move on, when you know deep down you can not at the moment and it may take time and that is OKAY.
It helps one to NOT feel so lost after a pregnancy loss or any type of loss. It covers so many topics--such as handling intimacy issues. My grief counselor sent me her copy since mine was going to take a while to get to me and I am happy she did. I know I will keep this book in my home library (my copy) and read it again when times get tough. I have already read it twice. I strongly recommend it to women facing these issues. It was the best money I have spent on the subject!

Book Description
Roy Buchanan was a "guitarist's guitarist" who shunned fame for a musical odyssey on America's roadhouse circuit with his battered Telecaster - melding blues, country, jazz and rock like no player before or since. This is a compelling road trip through the gritty world of honky tonks and beer joints where this enigmatic journeyman preferred to play. Readers meet the biggest names in pop music and legions of unknowns along the way, from the dawn of rock 'n' roll to Buchanan's puzzling death in 1988. "We just sat there aghast ... It was some of the best playing I've ever heard ... He defied all the laws of verse-chorus-verse and just blazed." - Jeff Beck "Roy was one of the creators in the pioneering of unusual sounds. It seemed as though I was hearing them come first from Roy Buchanan." - Les Paul

AN REAL AMERICAN IDOL.......2007-05-27

music, sweet music.......2007-04-02
During a recent health low, I was web searching for Phil Carson, someone I'd met at a GD show at Red Rocks in '84. At the time I was convinced he was an archangel of some sort. I guess it wasn't quite mutual. 'S'cool.... But I'm pretty sure this must be the same guy. From the samples on Amazon, this Phil Carson writes superbly. Whether he's my one-time flame or not, I commend him on his delightful writing. Really nice work. I sincerely hope he and his loved ones are well and happy. I am really looking forward to reading this book, and the one about Hispanics in Colorado, since I now teach that unit to my third grade students. (I would even be interested in translating it into Spanish, if it hasn't been done already...)
I had never heard of Roy Buchanan, so I am relishing discovering his music as well as reading the rest of Phil's book.
YOU LEARN ABOUT ROY AND THE MUSIC BUSINESS.......2007-02-11
I like Roy's first records--loud and clear, with the focus on his playing. Later on they tried to make him like Clapton, but it didn't work. I would rate Roy in the top 5 of the people I have heard. I also like Bugs Henderson, Tinsley Ellis, Wes Jeans, and Dave Hole. This book is a very good read. I saw Roy at Park West in Chicago. He did a very short set. It was hard to enjoy him with the female booze hustlers bothering me, but, he seem to be in top form. I still have my ticket, inside Roy's live Japan import.
Unknown guitar genius........2006-11-06
All I ever wanted to know, about the man and his music.Great biografy, have read many books on other artist. If you go through Buchanan`s songs, there are many differt styles he mastered.Country, rockabilly, rock & &roll, instrumentals, pop,r & b,jazz.Saw him live once in Oslo, that was great. My friends say, play the #Telecaster# and die young, but I have to play it,have -blonde 52 reissue. Now I study bossa nova masters, like Lois Bonfa,Joao Gliberto,Jobim etc.cause I got a job with a female singer, playing spanish guitar. There are a few cuts with Roy playing acoustic and they are great.Read the book,by his concert DVD,s,and if you run short, get bored playing the beast, listen to the man. There have never been a guitar player like him,he had his own style, his style will never be duplicated. All american music styles, and Malaguena. The roadhouse king will live on forever.Arnie Buy-ROY BUCHANAN his first and SECOND ALBUM on Polydor, that is a good start.Good reading, good listning and play them over and over, and you will hear his soul.
We still can listen to his unforgettable music ..........2005-09-08
1988 Roy Buchanan decided, to hang up himself with his own T-shirt in a police cell in Fairfax, Virginia, aged 49. In the year 1971 a TV documentation had been sent titled "The Best Unknown Guitarist In The World". Nothing had (and has) changed since then. Buchanan worked as a studio musician for Elvis Presley, Chet Atkins, Ricky Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Stefan Grossman, Tom Paxton. He even got offers by the Rolling Stones [to replace Brian Jones] or by John Lennon [to play his part in the Plastic Ono Band]. Buchanan played the electrical melody guitar like a devil, chased so many notes in second fractions through the amplifier, that one could not count or write down these notes any more. On the other hand he mastered the art, to slow down melody-lines so much at certain points, that one forgets the melody never more: alike Mark Knopfler or Santana, Eric Clapton or Mark perfectly are practicing this way. I will never forget his version of "After Hours". I recorded this pretty piece of music with my tape recorder [turned old now] from the radio in 1959. Roy Buchanan (1939-1988) learned to play the Hillbilly Steel Guitar at the age of nine years, experienced public worships of blacks and whites in the South of the USA. His father was a preacher in the "Pentecostal Church Of God" and he liked to say, that his mother sang better than Billie Holiday. So Blind Boy Fuller or Elvis Presley, Delta Blues or Rockabilly lay in his cradle. He played the guitar lick of "Susie Q" nearly every evening, tantalized by the wish, to arouse the attention of the young ladies. 1963 Roy Buchanan married his girl-friend Judy and lived in the area around Washington. He had to get through his little family occasionally by working as a hairdresser. After a Rolling Stone interview in 1971 finally he became more publicly known. He played in a sold out Carnegie Hall, his first LP appeared and that mentioned television program was broadcast with the title "The Best Unknown Guitarist In The World". He played together with other "claptonesque" guitarists, came into the charts in Great Britain with a CC-Rider version, appeared in Japan and Amsterdam - and then (just back in the USA) hung himself in that prison: The backside of his great musical brilliance was an emotional instability. Though his curriculum vitae ended so sadly, he indirectly remained unchanged for us with his most creative and joyful minutes of his life - because we still can listen to his unforgettable music ...
