The best short introduction to Lacan in English so far. It might have its simplifications but it is inevitable in a book of 200 pages which covers so huge a subject. As for May 21, 2006 one star review see his/her review of "The Puppet and the Dwarf" -- if you have read it, it will tell you more than you want to know.

Oversimplification is the name for the erroneousness.......2006-05-21

Bruce Fink, though a practicisng lacanian psychoanalist, has outlined quite a an oversimplifed version of the Lacanian theoretical edifice. Not so surprisingly, oversimplified means erroneous for much of the time. Especially, when it comes to giving examples for what abstract theory holds, the author comes very close to misrepresentation. Take for example his definition of the Other as "collection of all the words and expressions in a language", his constantly naming of "unconscious as foreign to the self" and this ridiculous (fictious) example of Einstein remembering the words of his father he heard when he was in pre-language stage. It may be, i dont know, a not-a-bad book for a starter who is supposed to develep no furher interest (desire?) for Lacan and but certainly a misguiding for a demanding reader.

A first-rate introduction to Lacanian thought.......2005-08-16

Bruce Fink has done English speakers a great service in his works on Lacan. "The Master" is often disregarded and maligned for being impossible to understand, and whether or not you agree with those descriptions Lacan is made wholly intelligible in Fink's thoughtful studies.

The Lacanian Subject is a great intro to Lacan. The only better one that I've read is Fink's own A Clinical Introduction to Lacanian Psychoanalysis, which is aimed at clinicians but is a little bit gentler in its exposition of Lacanian theory. But The Lacanian Subject is a fantastic book, maintaining a balance between being comprehensible and challenging. It is neither a crude popularization or a bloodless academic treatise, instead being an engaging mix of theoretical exegesis and lively engagement.

Keep the title in mind when reading this book: more than anything it's a course in what subjectivity consists of for Lacan. Fink takes you through the concepts of the unconscious structured like a language, Lacan's three registers (imaginary, symbolic, and real), alienation, seperation, object (a), the phallus, the four discourses, and more with an eye towards the subject in Lacan: what is it and how does it differ from its conceptions in other schools of thought, psychoanalytic and otherwise.

I highly recommend reading this in conjunction with Fink's A Clinical Introduction to Lacanian Psychoanalysis. The two reinforce and illuminate each other, as the analytic situation makes more sense in light of the theory offered herein, and some of the complex formulations in this book will be easier to understand in light of how Lacanian analysis is practiced. The two works will provide a strong foundation for you to start tackling Lacan's famous seminars (and keep your eyes open for Fink's long-awaited new translation of Ecrits).

THE Best Intro into Lacan Part 1.......2005-03-15

Along with his book "A Clinical Introduction into Lacanian Psychoanalysis," this book by Bruce Fink makes us THE best introduction into Lacanian theory one can find in English. After reading this book I got a very good snap shot into what Lacan's entire project in fact is. To be sure, this book is not the end all of Lacan, for Lacan's project is vast in itself, nor does Fink intend it to be so. Rather, this book gives one some footing to engage the Seminars of Lacan. The strength of this book HAS TO BE its LUCIDITY and CLARITY. Fink certainly is a pedagogue and is very intend on explaining what Lacan is talking about. He is not going into obscurities to sound academic and difficult. NO: Fink is intending to give the English reader a picture of what is going on. He does this by grounding Lacan's theory in Freud. By doing this, we get a very good picture of how Lacan performed his now famous "return to Freud," and what that actually entails. After reading this book you will get the picture that one cannot read Lacan without Freud and that Freud himself loses something without Lacan. I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to get a foot into the door in Lacanian theory.

I would have liked to have been told that Cheesemaking Made Easy is basically the same book as Home Cheesemaking (by same author), only the latter is new and improved. This is not made clear on the website, and I unfortunately ordered both.

Good, but can be confusing to a beginner.......2001-04-30

I bought this book along with Barbara Ciletti's "Making Great Cheese" (out of print at the time of this review) and Shane Sokol's "And That's How You Make Cheese!" While this book was good and had many recipes, "And That's How You Make Cheese!" was easier to start with. It has easier, fully explained recipes. It does have fewer recipes, about 30, but all the popular cheeses are included. In short, this is a good book for the experienced, but if you are just starting, try "And That's How You Make Cheese!" first. Or buy both like I did, they'll compliment well.

Excellent beginners' book.......1999-08-18

This is a wonderful introduction to cheesemaking. As noted in another reader's review, the authors are pragmatic and candid: they tell you what's involved so you won't get in over your head because of ignorance. The authors also offer cheesemaking workshops, including both beginner and intermediate.

Very informative but of limited practical use.......1999-05-14

Once upon a time, I tried to get my hands on cheesemaking. Having mastered winemaking and homebrewing with some success and being an avid hobby chef, I thought that can't be too difficult. However, after having bought some basic supplies, I quickly realized that the process of making cheese is far from trivial.
Then I got this book, which was very enlightening in terms of my understanding of how cheese is made, but it helped me little to improve my cheesemaking skills. The best advice I ever got in that pursuit was talking to a Swiss "Senn" in the Glarner Mountains and then I gave up on cheesemaking....
In summary: a nice book if you want some insight into the cheesemaking process, but on the "how-to" side, the book is of limited use once you have gone past your first steps.

autobiography by a great american author.......2007-08-13

When I was in Junior High I found Jesse Stuart's book "Hie to the Hunters" in the school library. It remains one of the best books I have ever read. Stuart was at the same time a tough man's man and a sensitive poet. His love of the natural beauty of Kentucky and his people shines through in all his writing, as does his toughness, hard work and perseverance. He was born in the hill country of Kentucky to a father who was not literate and a mother who had only completed a few years of grade school, yet he and his brothers and sisters learned the value of education and became school teachers. "The Thread That Runs So True" is the story of his career in education, beginning when he was a 17-year-old teaching a rural one-room school in the 1920s, through stints as a principal and superintendent of schools, and finally as a farmer, author, and lecturer. "The Thread That Runs So True", written in 1949, remains probably his best-known book, but parts of it are almost too painful to read. Stuart's first year of teaching was at a country school where his older sister had been badly beaten up and driven from the school by a tough male student. Stuart wrote poignantly of the beautiful and the ugly in this book, and it is very worthwhile reading.

Best Book About Teaching as a Profession.......2007-05-09

This was the book I read in high school that made me want to be a teacher. Jesse Stuart's experiences as a young Kentucky teacher in the hill country are classic.

His writing is sincere and full of the love of education. Both of his parents were good hard-working people who could barely read.

Only a true writer could have conveyed the sense of adventure, the wonder, and above all, the sense of accomplishment that inspiring young minds gives to the true teacher.

I am not one that usualy likes the books teachers require me to read, but this book was great. The story was captivating and fun. The reading was light and I wasn't a fan of the choppy "chaptering" of the book, but I did enjoy it very much.

The Struggle against apathy.......2007-02-26

I was hooked at the first chapter. I had never even heard of this book but bought it at a book sale because it was Scribener's Library edition. There is a purpose for a man's (or woman's life) - to go out and change the world - to find the problems and leave the world better than before. To change one life at a time. How do you teach the children today that they need to wake up to their duty? This man was slaying giants at an early age. Let us teach our children to break out of their Wii cocoons and challenge the world order. Who knows what problems they will solve.

Heart rending & poignant!.......2007-01-21

I DO happen to have a first edition autographed copy given to me as a gift which I cherish. I have loved this book so much, I could read it yearly. I've had difficulties finding it through the years to give to colleagues and beginning teachers. This book should be required reading for all new teachers. Jesse Stuart was light years ahead of his time. He was a dedicated, committed, and passionate teacher. When the students weren't "getting" the math lesson, he looked around the room, noticed the Farm Bureau calendar on the wall, took it down and cut out the numbers for the students to have concrete manipulatives. Decades later, publishing companies are selling concrete manipulative for students to learn math. One of the other reviews stated "he wasn't a good writer." He was a teacher, writing his story. I am a National Board Certified teacher of writing and I would love to see more teachers write their story.

Easy and quick Jewish recipes.......2007-03-08

Recently I have become interested in Jewish culture and tradition, wanting to understand more facets including food. But the Jewish recipes I had were too complicated and time consuming, not to mention extremely high calorie. Then I found this cookbook. The recipes range from very simple to fairly complex, but the equipment required can be found in my kitchen, the steps are clear, and the tastes have been updated for a modern palate. Jewish customs central to the holidays are also explained clearly, with simple, effective ideas for decorations included. This is a great book.

The recipe for the Crowned apple cake is Awesome!! I make it every year for Rosh Hashana and everyone raves about it. This is just one the many wonderful recipes in this book. The Passover desserts are great, too.

Fantastic Delicious Book.......2005-03-30

I have a huge library of Jewish cookbooks, and this is now the only one I turn to. The recipes are easy to execute, and will make you look like a gourmet cook.
I use this cookbook, even when it is not holiday time.
The stuffed cabbage casserole is remarkable and the brisket is just devine.
The Pesach desserts are incredible, and everytime I make one, someone asks me if it was store bought, they come out so professional looking. They are that terrific. The chocolate chip cookies are so delicious that my Mom could not believe they were Pasidic. I also enjoy the ritual information, and table setting ideas.
The dreidle cake was a major hit at Chanukah.
The is the ONE book that you must have for holiday cooking.
It should be in every household. I have given this book as a gift year after year, and it is always appreciated.

A Converts' culinary guide to Judaism.......2003-12-25

Last year my sister gave me Fast and Festive Meal..as a Chanakah gift as I was converting to Judaism and had little knowledge of how to cook jewishly. This book is absolutely amazing. Wonderful meal suggestions that have allowed me to incorporate Jewish eating into my new life as a Jew with the attendant rituals. What I find most attractive are her suggestions on the timing of preparations and the possibilities for freezing.

Outstanding authentic recipes!.......2003-02-12

I was skeptical that this cookbook could deliver, but it does! I have made many of these recipes and complete menus, and everything has obviously been tested repeatedly; each recipe is a winner! I have gotten many compliments over these dishes. Best of all, I am able to entertain with two small children by following her timelines and preparing in advance. This has become a favorite cookbook of mine for all Jewish holidays.

Gil Marks has done a fine job in presenting a variety of menus for all occassions. The recipes are calculated for generous party size servings, making it easy to plan events and shopping lists. The recipes are clear, straight forward and tasty, the book layout very user friendly. This book might also be a good resource for caterers.

This book is great for ways to help "blended" families celebrate both Chanukah and Christmas in a way that does not short change either celebration. Lots of crafts and recipes that the children can use to help them understand that it is possible to respect and enjoy both of their parents religion. I am glad I bought it. They will be glad to receive it.

A really funny book with lots of great pictures.......2006-12-06

This book fits my life...I decorate our Chrismukkah tree with menorahs as well as colorful glass balls. The wreath on our door has dreidels on it instead of pine cones and holly. Our daughter looks forward to both lighting the tree AND the Hanukkah candles. There are lots of funny tips and trivia about those who also celebrate both holidays in December. I've only said that a couple times in my life. Gompertz treats the subject with insanely clever humor and heart and is a top-notch writer. This isn't just a gimmick; it's clear this guy really cares about Jews and Gentiles embracing and carrying on their own traditions...together.

I'm getting this book for all my interfaith couple friends (and the list is growing). What a terrific gift for the holiday season!
