Leaving Lessons and Memories For Our Children.......2004-01-27
This book is proof that self-publishing can work well. I know this author, and he originally only wanted to document his experiences for his sons. The idea was to teach them the reality of war without the harrowing emotional experiences the author lived through. His story grew into this book, and many readers in addition to the author's sons are benefiting from this effort. The insights are invaluable to anyone interested in the soldier's experience, that is so rarely talked about in our culture. A good read, indeed, and anyone who grew up playing "fort" can relate and remember.
Mind Opening.......2003-10-23
I grew up in the anti-war vietnam era and always wondered how people could willingly go to war. This is the first book to help me understand the relationship between childhood games, pro-war movies/media fantasies and the harsh reality of "waking up" in a battlefield. The author's childhood romatic ideals of his father's war is shattered by his own experience in the damp jungles of vietnam. This as a must read for all young people and especially important in today's era of uncertain war.
Page turner!.......2003-10-21
A good read, this book is also a thought provoking look at growing up and the thinking, experiences and instincts that lead the author into, and ultimately out of, war. In that regard, it's a kind of spiritual journey, but one that gives you an almost anthropological look at people's attachment to territory -- whether it's a neighborhood fort, an encampment perimeter, or a homeland.
That said, it's anything but dry. There's a broad range of experience here, from the humorous and nostalgic to the grimmest reality. And while some of it will seem familiar to the reader, the telling offers a fresh perspective on soldiering that's well worth pondering. I highly recommend it!
I loved this book.......2003-09-22
I loved this book. John has a wonderful narrative voice and his stories of childhood remind me of my own. Though I grew up ten years later and did not have to serve in Vietnam, his experiences growing up resonate with me: roaming the neighborhood in gangs, building forts and playing war. His misadventures in Vietnam remind me again how thankful I am that I was too young to serve. I highly recommend this book. It is a good read whether you served in Vietnam or just played war as a kid.

Book Description
Most medical doctors have probably during their studies heard of the `Magnus and De Kleijn reflexes' and may have been aware of their relation to posture. But they know little about their significance and nothing about the man who unravelled the complex physiology of these reflexes and about his work.
Rudolf Magnus lived from 1873 until 1927. His work on the physiology of posture was initiated during a short period of work with Sherrington in Liverpool in 1908. Though Magnus was also an authority in the field of pharmacology, it was particularly his neurophysical work on posture which made him known worldwide. It led to his nomination, together with De Kleijn, for the Nobel Prize in 1927. Unfortunately he died before the decision was made.
In this illustrated biography Magnus' family background and his student years are described in a lively way. Fragments of the diary of his journey to England in 1898 and the description of his scientific career in Heidelberg will enlighten those interested in the history of how science was conducted during his lifetime. His lectures on Goethe as a scientist are also included. This is followed by Magnus' life as Professor of Pharmacology in Utrecht, and his studies on animal postures and experimental pharmacology. Finally Magnus' legacy is described.

Great practicle book!.......2006-03-01
This is such an easy read and so common sense. Not a quick fix, but very healthy and applicable theories.
All diet myths shattered........2005-09-14
After reading this book, I know why all those diets I've tried failed. I was so happy to finally find someone who understands the special dietary needs of women and who could thoroughly explain away the diet myths out there. It is one of the most helpful books I've read in years.
Good Book.......2004-02-09
Has good info for newbies to fitness and seasoned vetrens. Also it is an easy read. YOu can get the majority of the book read in one night. One Negative is the last few chapters are more wordy than nessasary.
Go Girl!.......2001-07-25
I am fed up with the magazine image American women are sold. Thin is being sold as fitness. Covert's tape helped me to affirm my belief in fitness, not just appearance. And another thing...has anyone else noticed that on the cover of most women's magazines you are given teaser titles on how to loose 10 pounds fast, and than in the bottom corners, pictures of cookies and 19 layer chocolate cakes?
EXCELLENT!.......2000-05-30
As a Fitness Trainer, I was amazed at the wealth of good/valuable information this book provides. I had read it originally 10 years ago, and teach many of my clients the principles Mr. Bailey describes. Use this book as your guide to weight loss!

Book Description
This is the story of how Vevanne Biggs, a 46-year-old, 310-pound woman, became a triathlete--competing in races that combine swimming, cycling, and marathon running--with dreams of becoming an "Ironwoman" by her 50th birthday. This is a success story, but not for reasons you might think. Vevanne Biggs did not suddenly become thin--in fact she will probably never be thin! Instead she discovered a marvelous secret: that exercise can help overcome fear, break down personal barriers, and create a greater life than she could have ever dreamed possible. Candid, inspiring, and above all, real, this woman offers no magic solution, no quick fix. Instead she points to a challenging path that requires courage and devotion, and promises health and happiness for both body and soul.

David George Gordon, author of The Compleat Cockroach, says eating protein-rich bugs is good for you ("Crickets are loaded with calcium, and termites are rich in iron), and good for the earth ("Raising cows, pigs, and sheep is a tremendous waste of the planet's resources, but bug ranching is pretty benign"). After all, what's inherently more disgusting about eating a grasshopper than, say, an oyster? Gordon enthusiastically provides recipes for terrestrial arthropods gleaned from the entomophagic appetites of people around the world, telling you which insects are most delicious and which to avoid, how to cook them, and which wine to drink with your many-legged meal. The recipes themselves are clear, easy to follow, and quite educational, with sidebar tidbits about the bugs you're about to eat. Gordon divides the recipes into sections by type of insect, be it grasshoppers, social insects, or "pantry pests." And, of course, he provides a list of places where you can order your edible insects and tips for catching your own. The Eat a Bug Cookbook is a sure kitchen conversation piece--even if you never try Three Bee Salad or Chocolate Cricket Torte, you'll laugh out loud, squirm uncomfortably, and lick your chops while taking this deliciously creepy culinary tour. --Therese Littleton

The ideal gift.......2002-07-03
The ideal gift for your mother-in-law
Fun and tasty!.......2000-02-18
While I originally bought this as a gag gift for my wife (no pun intended), once we tried some of the recipes we found that we really enjoyed it. Even our son has taken a liking to the recipes (so far, crickets are his favorite). If you can get past your initial apprehension, you'll really enjoy the recipes. Oddly enough, I've also found that I'm no longer asked to bring in dishes for our carry-ins at work.
A Fondness for Beetles.......1999-03-29
When British scientist J.B.S. Haldane was asked what could be inferred about the Almighty from a lifelong study of nature, he replied (given that there are 400,000 species of beetles, compared with only 8,000 species of mammals) that God must have Òan inordinate fondness for beetles.Ó If beetles and other insects are so abundant, why doesnÕt everyone eat bugs instead of plants, fish, birds, and chemically-fattened mammals? As explained in this prankish yet valuable guide to entomophagy (Latin for Òbug-eatingÓ), we already eat insects, inadvertently, in the sense that the FDAÕs food safety regulations allow up to 60 aphids in 3 1/2 ounces of frozen broccoli, 74 mites in 100 grams of canned mushrooms, and so on. They canÕt be completely kept out of our food, and, so long as we donÕt know weÕre eating them, theyÕre not only tasty, theyÕre rich in nutrients (a grasshopper, for example, is more than 20 per cent protein, and crickets are an excellent source of calcium). This parody of a typical cookbook concludes with a 3-page list of suppliers of edible anthropods (whether live or ready to serve), manufacturers of exotic toothpicks, and organizations that sponsor bug-eating extravaganzas. The author, who has a weakness for bad puns (among his recipes are ÒParty Pupae,Ó ÒThree Bee Salad,Ó ÒPest-O,Ó and ÒFried Green Tomato Horn WormÓ), has written such earlier popular books as The Compleat Cockroach and Field Guide to the Slug (which the New York Times described as ÒgrippingÓ). (Review from Ballast Quarterly Review, Vol 14 No 2 Winter 1998-99)
This book has been a turning point in my life........1999-02-18
Ever since I brought Gordon's "Crispy Crickets" to my work, my popularity has skyrocketed. I didn't even get fired for using the customer's kitchen to cook the crickets.
Try it--the food's surprisingly good.......1998-11-25
I had the pleasure of assisting Mr. Gordon at the Pacific Science Center here in Seattle, where he prepared Orzo with Crickets for an audience of stunned adults and captivated kids (not to mention animal-rights protesters--forget the Makah whale hunts, let's keep people from eating insects!). I was skeptical at first--and it *was* disconcerting to see "bugs" in the sample that I ate--but the bottom line is any dish with orzo, peppers, garlic, and butter will taste good! The crickets add a mild flavor and interesting texture. Try it. You might squirm at first, but you'll like it.
Maybe this will be the next Seattle craze to sweep the nation. Move over, Starbucks!

A must have for dog lovers. Very funny........1998-04-08
According to the introduction, you are to read this book to your dog so they know how to interact with you. I read this book in one night and was laughing the whole time. It is the story of Boomer and takes him from how to get into the house to running it.
I enjoyed this book very much because Boomer's behavior was the same as my Golden Retriever. It was as if the author was writing about her.
Book Description
The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was undoubtedly one of the most significant aircraft of World War II. Despite suffering setbacks in the summer of 1940 at the hands of the RAF, it continued to be used effectively in other theatres and roles until the last days of the war, particularly as a night fighter against RAF Bomber Command's strategic bombing campaign over the Reich. This title shows you how to correct and convert basic 1/48-scale kits of the Bf 110 into many different variants, using a wide selection of aftermarket detail sets, conversions, accessories and decals for both day and night fighter schemes.

"The time after delivery is the best time ever for you to lose weight!" writes Sheldon Levine, M.D., in Hello, Baby! Good-bye, Baby Fat! Not only can you lose the weight you gained during pregnancy, you can return to a body that is trimmer than before, says Levine. Your body undergoes metabolic and hormonal changes that allow you to lose weight effortlessly, he claims, as long as you know how to work with your body rather than against it. He divides the "biological window of weight loss opportunity" into three phases: "the three postpartum trimesters of weight loss." The book takes a few too many chapters to get to what you want to know--how to harness the body's ability to lose weight after pregnancy--but it finally gets there. In the first postpartum trimester, your metabolic rate is burning high and your appetite is suppressed, making it easy to lose weight. However, postpartum depression can interfere, and Levine explains how you can combat mild cases by raising serotonin levels with dietary changes and more severe cases with medication. Likewise, Levine shows you how to use diet and easy toning exercises to accelerate the weight-loss potential of the other postpartum trimesters. The book includes 14 days of menus and a dozen recipes, plus tips for avoiding excessive weight gain during pregnancy. --Joan Price
Book Description
Each year 400,000 pregnant women in the United States get the weight loss surprise of their lives: They lose so much weight after delivery that they weigh less thanthey did before they were pregnant. "The weight just seemed to come off by itself," they say.
Want to know their secret? It's in this book--and in your "new mom" body. Contrary to popular belief, losing weight after childbirth is easier than at any other time--if you understand your body's unique postpartum chemistry. For the first time, weight loss expert Sheldon Levine, M.D., reveals the "three trimesters of weight loss" that occur after delivery, and how to lose weight at each stage, no matter how much you weighed before pregnancy:
Birth to Three Months Postpartum: The best time to lose weight! The plummeting hormones and elevated metabolism of new motherhood naturally speed the process. Just follow Dr. Levine's simple dietary advice to help ward off the "baby blues" and boost energy, and your body will do the rest.
Three to Six Months Postpartum: The key weight loss phase for overweight new moms: You can actually lower your set point--the weight your body "likes" best.
Six to Nine Months Postpartum: Good news for overweight nursing moms: Their unique body chemistry allows weight loss to continue, offering a real chance of attaining (and maintaining) a healthy weight.
Dr. Levine's simple fourteen-day menu plan is nutritionally sound for new and nursing moms. It increases energy, minimizes food cravings and mood swings, and includes recipes and lifestyle tips. His toning program takes only minutes a day. Both enhance the new mother's physical and emotional well-being.
So forget sit-ups! Forget diets! Dr. Levine's new approach works with your body chemistry to make weight loss after childbirth easy, fast--and forever.

This works.......2007-02-19
During my second pregnancy I read this book, I followed the simple guidelines, after my baby was born, that were inside this book and ended up weighing less than I did in high school after about 6 months postpartum. You must follow the guidelines the very second the baby is born, but it is all doable. I breastfed and I am a stay at home mom, two things that Dr. Levine says actually slow weight loss, but in spite of that I found myself weighing 20 pounds less than I did before I got pregnant. I wish I could Thank Dr. Levine personally. I am rereading this book now with my 4th pregnancy and feel confident that I will be able to follow the tips Dr. Levine shared. It is not a waste of money, you just need to have read it before you have the baby and keep it close as a reference after your baby is born, and don't give up!!!!
Read Debra Waterhouse's Book Instead!.......2005-09-29
I was stunned by the negative tone and lack of support for nursing moms in this book. I read this book (last year) at 5 months post-partum (from the library- thank goodness I did not spend money on it!) and it left me feeling despondent. This book weighed heavy on my mind and made me feel guilty for going over the "recommended weight gain"- reading it was not a good experience.
I am a very fit person- before, during, and after my pregnancy. I run competitively, do pilates and yoga, and do advanced step aerobics classes. My weight did not fall off easily- it's slow and steady- and it's hard work.
I would advise to pass on this book and pick up Debra Waterhouse's book: Fighting the Female Fat Cell After Pregnancy. Dr. Levine didn't tell a plan that worked for my body or for the body of other mothers I know. Save yourself the heartache- and leave this book on the shelf.
My son is now 17 months and stopped nursing 4 months ago- I have about 8 pounds (of about 50 gained!) to go to reach my pre-pregnancy weight, and I have cut my mile time by a minute! I lost 2.5 pounds this week- at 17 months postpartum.
It can happen- you can do it- keep going- but this book will not help you.
the worst ever for a new mom.......2005-01-20
While I was reading this book I was amazed that it even made it onto a book shelf. The author said that **the body is a furnace after you give birth and you should have no problem losing the weight--you shouldn't even have to try.** He said that women should lose all of the weight in their first six months--with little or no exercise. This is such crap. From a new mom who is working her butt off to get back in shape (and eating healthy) this ticks me off. I barely lost any of the weight my first six months. My body is not a furnace (as I'm sure many aren't...no two bodies work the same). I also breastfed my daughter for the first 6 months...this did not help w/ weight loss either. My daughter is now almost 9 months old and I have only lost half of the weight...but that was by eating healthy and staying active. This book honestly made me feel bad about myself, because I wasn't able to acheive what the author thinks is "normal" weight loss following the birth of my child. And FYI ladies...just because you lose the weight, doesn't mean you gain the muscle back--just work-out and eat healthy...that's how you lose the baby weight:)
Horrible book! .......2004-12-11
I just checked this book out from the library and I am so glad that I did not waste my money on it. The way the book is presented seems like propaganda. Levine keeps promising stuff and you have to read pages and pages into the book before you even get information. It reads like a late night TV infomercial. He also says that exercise is not needed for weight loss - but as another reviewer said... Sure, you may weigh less but you'll still be flabby. I would not purchase this book!
a waste of money unless you have no nutritional sense.......2003-05-16
I have just finished reading this book in my ninth month of pregnancy. I'm so glad I borrowed it from the library rather than wasting money buying this book! Dr. Levine has an easy to follow writing style and he certainly explains in very clear terms the physiological components of pregnancy and post-partum. His theory is basically it take 3 trimesters to build a baby and then, depending on your build and weight, another 1-3 trimesters to lose the fat. He promises you can lose weight that you put on even prior to the pregnancy - definitely an attractive promise!
I excitedly read the first few chapters but about half-way through started to question his ideas. First, although he provides his research citations at the back of the book, he doesn't refer to specific studies throughout the book - so, I had no way of checking how he got his information. He'd state something in the book but there was no specific reference to any study so I really, in the end, don't know if I trust all of his statements. Second, like some of the other reviewers says - he seems to feel that unless you take-off your weight immediately post-partum, you are doomed to get fat. Personally, I've seen many women lose weight and fat in all stages of their lives - it's called eating properly and exercising regularly. The other thing I questioned is his repeated comments that exercise is not needed to lose weight. First of all, exercise is good for you, not matter what happens to your weight. Second, if I don't exercise, it's quite likely I may lose "weight" as my muscle will decrease; sure I'll weigh less but I'll also be flabby. I don't think women in post-partum should be pressured to run marathons but I also think that saying exercise won't help you lose weight is not particularly wise. Even if it doesn't help, it strengthens your heart, your bones, your mind and is just overall "good for you"! The last thing that really disappointed me was his menus. Prior to the menu presentation, he gives basic common sense advice like eating whole-grain carbs, staying away from extreme diets (i.e. high protein or high fat), avoiding a drastic decrease in calories - no magical advice there. Then, when you finally see the menus he refers to throughout the book - what a disappointment. He outlines meals using processed foods and name-brand products. His food plans are not balanced - there is not sufficient calcium, vegetables or fruits in his suggested plans. It really bothered me how he didn't just use "real food" but rather, ready-to-prepare, processed name brand stuff. The other thing I thought was weird is he had several pages devoted to fast food restaurants; in these pages, he outlined various fast food meals and then gave the "best" choices at each. Why all this name-brand stuff? And, I'm sorry, but if you want to "say goodbye to baby fat", just don't go to McDonalds or Taco Bell.
I am so glad I saved my money and didn't buy this book - I'll try to lose my pregnancy weight on my own by exercising, eating real food and avoiding high-fat junk. There - that advice cost me nothing!
Book Description
Based on extensive family interviews and newly discovered documents
Intriguing story of a black woman pioneer in recorded music
Dinah Washington sang pop, jazz, R&B and gospel, but most of all she sang the blues"Maybe I'm a Fool" and "I Wanna Be Loved" and Muddy Water" and (of course) "What a Difference a Day Makes" and countless othersall in a distinctive honey-and-vinegar voice that made everything she sang unmistakably her own. Dubbed both the Queen of the Blues and Queen of the Juke Box, Dinah Washington had songs, shows, lovers, and husbands. Controversial to the critics of her time, vastly influential to the next generation of singers, Washington will always be remembered for a life that was, first and foremost, music.
Customer Reviews:
Voice as honey,busy as a Bee.......2007-07-03
Because no one has ever written about legendary Dinah Washington before (at least not published in Europe),I snatched this book immediately just to find it a bit overwhelming & too detailed.Where author dazzled in her previous book, this time she seems she wasn't sure is she writting about Washington or the whole afro-american society of post WW2 America.Sure, she had done her homework and reasearched high and low (future authors will have to rely on her) but after a while, the book turns into list of every concert performance Washington ever gave in her life, therefore a bit dry.Strange how vital and exciting singer like Washington ended up with such uninspired biographer! The little episodes, like the only time this overworked woman spent time with her family in Disneyland tell much more than all the concerts and recording dates.I love Washington dearly and thanks to her music legacy, for me she lives forever.Read the book if you are curious, but stick to the music.
Still Waiting for the Definitive Bio..........2005-01-30
Dinah Washington, like Etta James and Esther Phillips, is one of the underrated singers of the post WWII era, and very little has been written about her. So when I saw this book and who its author was,(Nadine Cohodas, who wrote a superb history of Chess Records,Spinning Blues Into Gold), I eagerly anticipated reading it.
After finishing it, unfortunately I'm still waiting for the definitive biography of the Queen. It's very apparent that Cohodas did a lot of research, but the result was turned into a laundry list of club dates, recording sessions, clothes inventories, and rotating musicians and husbands which becomes numbing. What is missing is context and interpretation of these events aside from the repetitive assertion that Washington was narrowly promoted and marketed because of race. I wasn't looking for sensationalism or psychobiography from this book, but I was hoping to gain some insight into Dinah Washington's life, or music, and the lack of analysis left me still wondering both who she was and how she created such wonderful music.
A fine insider's guide to the real Dinah.......2005-01-04
Born Ruth Lee Jones in 1924 in Alabama, singer Dinah Washington's family moved to Chicago where she became a local gospel star at fifteen - but she didn't stop there. When she was discovered by Lionel Hampton at eighteen, Dinah made her way to New York's Apollo Theatre and became a legend. Queen: The Life And Music Of Dinah Washington reviews her life and music, delving into her high and low moments alike. A fine insider's guide to the real Dinah.
Superficial Biography ... at best.......2004-12-31
Dinah Washington was a great human being as well as a great singer. Cohodas' limited writing skills and lack of insight result in an unwieldy, superficial account of dates, places and people in the life of this passionately human, outstanding artist who was decades ahead of her time. On the other hand, the book provides significant documentation for future biographers. The book gets one star for the excellent cover by Carol Devine Carson who also designed the cover of Bill Clinton's autobiography. Dinah would have loved it!
Given Dinah's magnificent talent, deep spirituality, and complex personality, only a highly skilled writer capable of penetrating social and psychological insights and access to personal materials could craft a biography worthy of her. Someone of the caliber of Toni Morrison, or Maya Angelou at her best, could do her justice. Until then, the brilliant light of Dinah's talents, generosity and love will continue to shine upon the earth bestowed - solo - by the Queen.
It's only the music I love........2004-11-18
I finished this book while listening to her multiple CD collections. The book gets five stars for its scholarship, its extensive notes, its all inclusive index.
But still it seems too cold for the subject at hand, or perhaps I'm just disappointed that Dinah Washington was more shallow than I imagined her to be. Probably the latter.
Also Cohodas's appraisal of the albums I enjoyed most is just the opposite of what I feel myself. What I hear as honest and tragic, the biography calls tired and too husky. And the other way around.
I had no idea that Dinah Washington did "It's Too Soon To Know" before Etta James (who owns the song in my estimation). Etta James came later, and she idolized Dinah Washington and made her sound her own, strings and all.
When Etta James spotted Dinah Washington in the audience at the nightclub where she was singing, she abandoned her original program and sang "Unforgettable" as a tribute to her idol. The song was broken up by Dinah Washington screaming at her, pointing a finger at her saying, "Girl, don't you ever try to do the Queen's songs."
According to Cohodas, Dinah Washington's lovers, to whom she dedicated songs, were usually gone by the time the records were released. She was married seven times and had many lovers in-between. Such as the "Rafael" she mentions on her cover of Irving Berlin's "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."
Dinah was dead at thirty-nine, but her music lives on and always will for this listener. This biography reminds me again that Art is part the author and part the reader, part the singer and part the listener. What I hear in her music has not changed.

unforgettable book for children .......2007-01-24
I read this book as a child in Hebrew - it was one of the most powerful books I've ever read as a child. It's a "simple" story of everyday survivel of group of Jewish children - who lived under a Polish identety beyoned the Warsow Getto. The book contains real pictures of those children - in real time - which makes everything "live like" and make the Holocaust "touchable". As a mother - I am buying this book to my children and I hope they will never forget as well.
great read.......2007-01-12
The book The Cigarette Sellers of Three Crosses Square is a great book. When I read it, I was always on edge. It just had so many surprising events; I just did not want to put it down. The book chronicles the survival of a group of orphaned Jewish children in German occupied Poland during WWII. The author, Joseph Ziemian, was a member of the Jewish resistance. He helps the children by getting them false identification papers and money. The children had a very meager and bleak existence, some escaped detection and survived to be liberated, some did not.
This book is best for junior high and up, as there are some graphic scenes.
There are two editions of the book; one published in the seventies and one published in '05. The books are identical except for one thing; the '05 edition has an additional epilogue. It gives an account of what happened to the character in the eleven years since the book was first published. I recommend the '05 edition for this reason.
True stories are the best stories........2001-10-20
This book catalogues the experiences of children who survived World War Two. That in itself is a stunning feat. But these weren't just children, these were Jewish children. They escaped from the Warsaw ghetto. The book follows the lives of the Sellers, both while within the ghetto and while they lived beyond it's walls. Being agile, and small, they were able to cross over the border into Gentile Warsaw and forage for food. They would bring the food back to their families, being the sole providers in a world designed not to provide. When the ghetto was liquidated, these children moved as they always had, into the city, but never moved back. The book follows their lives, their exploits and adventures, and their heartbreaks. It is a stunning book, not only for the subject matter, but for it's testament to the human spirit. These children didn't just survive. They lived.
