The critical importance of courage and keeping one's cool.......2002-11-10
Pilot From The Prairie is the personal memoir of Edgar Allen, a World War II bomber pilot. Edgar memorably relates the danger and horror of war, and the critical importance of courage and keeping one's cool to survive in the midst of dangerously lethal situations. A raw and vivid account that pulls no punches and makes the reader feel what it was really like to survive the thick of devastating war, Pilot From The Prairie is a welcome and highly recommended contribution to the growing library of World War II autobiographical accounts -- which is all the more appreciated as that generation of men and women leaves us through the inevitable passage of the years.

Enzymes-Enzyme Therapy by Dr. Cichoke MD.......2003-11-27
This book explains the mechanics of enzymes within the food
processing apparati of the body. These enzymes occur in all
living things. There are approximately 3000 enzymes which exist to ward off disease, assist the heartbeat, repair tissues, digest
food and perform a variety of important functions in the body.
The author explains how proteases breakdown protein.
i.e. histidine, leucine and tryptophan
There is a pH balance which consists of acids and alkalines
in a net balancing interaction within the body. Digestion
happens in the small intestine. There are extensive secretion
processes in the body i.e.
o saliva 1000 ml.
o gastric juices 1500 ml.
o pancreas 1000 ml.
o bile 1000 ml.
o small intestine 1800 ml.
o large intestine 200 ml.
Digestive processes are disturbed with improper tooth
alignment, diminished acid secretion, pancreatic insufficiency,
celial disease, lactose intolerance, stress. Digestion can
be helped by some of the recommendations contained in this book.
Various enzyme products can facilitate the digestive processes.
Soy sauce is a well-known enzyme enhancer. In addition, raw
veggies will assist in the process of enzyme interaction.
The author reviews an overall strategy to maximize enzyme
activity within the body consisting of:
o veggies
o garlic and onion
o minimum use of aluminum
o reduced salt intake
o reduced sugar
o an increase in bulk
o no coffee and smaller meals
o pineapple and papaya
o enzyme co-energizers Co-Q 10 ( coenzyme), zinc, red meat, nuts,
B vitamins., magnesium (Mg.), iron (Fe), copper (Cu.) and
Selenium (Se)
Overall, this work has a wealth of information pertaining to
personal health maintenance. It should be in every medical/
nutritional library.
Enzymes and Enzyme Therapy..........2000-03-28
Dr. Cichoke shows how every life process depends on enzymes. He covers a broad range of subjects starting with digestion, elimination, co-enzymes, how to obtain more enzymes in your diet and through supplementation. He has a 5-step program of do's and don'ts, including avoidance of aluminum cookware, refined sugars and salt, coffee, and so on. He also tells you how and what to eat and how to prepare foods for the best utilization of enzymes. Dr. Cichoke addresses a large range of health problems from extending life to AIDS and cancer. He also covers medications that affect enzymes, including OTC drugs and prescription drugs, as well as foods that contain enzyme inhibitors. This is a great book! One I believe everyone should own. I also would strongly suggest Dr. Cichoke's book "The Complete Book of Enzyme Therapy". This book is set up very much like the "Prescription for Natural Healing", however it addresses health from an enzyme point of view. I would rate them both a 5-star, must have if you care at all about your health. This book was required reading for my Enzymes class, "The Complete Book of Enzyme Therapy" was not, but after reading this one, I wanted to know more. This book is a great intro to enzymes, the complete book goes even further. It is in fairly simple to understand language if you have a bit of medcial background, you might need a medical dictionary if not.

Bringing Hawaii to Oregon.......2007-08-23
I bought this book to help me design a luau in Eugene, Oregon. Sam Choy (who seems to think he's famous, but I never heard of him or his fun singers) tells you how to dig a pit and cook a pig in it, complete with hot, sweaty photographs. These convinced my husband that he didn't want to dig a hole in the garden and get all hot and bothered with an insurance liability on his birthday.
Sam's recipes were intriguing and fun to read and surprisingly like Minnesota meets Hawaii. I wasn't expecting my grandmother's potato salad recipe! The idea of using liquid smoke to simulate Kahlua Pig made my skin crawl, so I found another recipe for honey-ginger-garlic glazed pork roast with glazed fresh pineapple in an old "Gourmet," which struck me as more my idea of Hawaiian (but what do I know?).
Ultimately, I didn't use any of these recipes, but I found the book inspirational with lots of ideas that got my thinking about how to bring Hawaii to the Great Northwest started.
The music CD included added lively rhythms to our successful luau for thirty.
Great Luau Recipes!.......2007-07-25
First of all I love Sam Choy, and this book is fabulous if you are doing you own luau. He has all the classic recipies, and they turn out great. Not to mention the cd that's included is true, fun, classic Hawaiian music and gets you in the luau mood! There is also lots of "talking story" that you will love. I would definately suggest investing in this book, you will love it.
Awesome recipes plus a music CD.......2007-03-18
Outstanding photos and clear instructions - my ideal of a perfect cookbook. Met Sam Choy @ a fundraiser luncheon which he was the Master Chef. The food and preparation was just like in his cookbook. "ONO"-licious!!!

Almost Five Stars.......2007-07-01
This is a really, really good book. The format is excellent (color photos, well organized) and he covers all of the important topics including flattening veneer, substrates, shop-made equipment and of course, cutting and fitting veneer.
However, there is a big gap in his coverage: the use of a vacuum press.
I've used a vacuum press numerous times and have excellent results. Mr. Barton, on the other hand, has never wanted to make the capital investment (~$700) in a quality vacuum press and consequently a lot of his projects didn't go well. Because he didn't have success with a retrofitted vacuum cleaner and thin plastic bags (both are inadequate for the task), he ignores a very useful tool.
Very Good Tutorial.......2007-05-25
Nice, relaxed writing style. Good information for anyone interested in learning about veneering from the ground up.
Veneering: A Foundation Course: Revised Edition.......2007-03-22
I found this to be an exellent source of information on Veneering. I have been a woodworker for over 20 years but am just now getting into Veneering....
Decent Info, But there is better out there.......2007-02-18
The author of this book surely has a lot of experience with veneering, but in my opinion there are better ways to do things than some of the ways he suggests. For instance he uses regular wood glue (PVA) to apply veneer by letting it dry and then using an iron to reactivate the glue. I would never trust this to hold over the long run and PVA glue is not the best kind of glue to use with veneer anyway. It is to thin and it doesn't dry to a hard glue line so it will allow the veneer to creep with seasonal changes in humidity. He also never mentions using a vacuum press. While a press might not be for beginners, it is the easiest, best way to veneer a flat or curved panel.
New version coming in June.......2006-02-14
Don't spend $40+ on a used book. Sterling Publishing is printing an updated version of this book to be released June 2006.

Book Description
An extremely detailed history of the world's greatest rock band, Van Halen.
Customer Reviews:
Makes a good doorstop.......2006-01-11
Dull dull and dull. A guaranteed good time for anal retentive fans with no life. For the rest of us it's about as exciting as watching paint dry. No pictures, no band interviews, no opinions, no new info, nothing. Just a billion pages of information, about 10% of which is useful. The other 90% is just there to take up space. Save your money.
Jam Packed With Tons Of Info..........2003-12-24
As you might know if you have read my other Van Halen product reviews, I am a Van Halen fanatic...which means I know a lot about the band, but with this book, the band members themselves could learn something! 425 pages containing things such as past concert dates, numerous pages of information on each song that they wrote, a 25-page timeline, I could keep going on all day.
Find all the good times!.......2001-08-22
Find anything you want to know about this amazing band! Dates, song, events you get the idea it's all in there!
Redefines the word ENCYCLOPEDIA!.......2001-07-25
A true Encyclopedia. This book should be the definition of it. Nothings missing in this compact book that is available at a bargain I think. Van Halen fans should not live without this excellent book.
Don't believe the hype!.......2001-07-02
Pros: Well, it's got alot of trivia tidbits... Cons: Numerous errors and a big disappointment if you're looking for good info regarding bootlegs. The Bottom Line: Unless you're simply looking for some shallow trivia about Van Halen, it would probably be best that you avoid paying your hard earned money to get this book, Recommended: No --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I bought this because I thought it was gonna give me lots of juicy details about the plethora of VH bootlegs that are available on the WWW, but I was sadly mistaken.
I wanted a list of bootleg cdr's with track listings, track times, sound quality & performance ratings, but these are not in this book.
Some errors: ---Attributes "Man On The Silver Mountain" to David Bowie(!) instead of Ronnie James Dio & Rainbow. ---Spells Jimi Hendrix "Jimmy". ---Attributes "Nobody's Fault But Mine" to Edgar Winter instead of Led Zeppelin. ---On page 173 Lynyrd Skynyrd is spelled "Lynard Skynard". ---Says that "no known recording exists" for VH's cover of Trower's "The Fool And Me" when one does indeed exist on "Golden West Ballroom 1976".
Perhaps these errors seem trivial, but damn, you'd think that the author of a book about a mainstream act like Van Halen would know better...
I was deeply disappointed with this book and wish that I had instead spent my money on something by Bukowski or Crumb.

A powerful memoir.......2006-12-31
It's a shame this book is out of print, since it's an important addition to the already-large canon of Shoah memoirs. Gizelle Hersh's family lives in the Hungarian town of Bixad, a charming spa resort which is now a part of Romania (the nation she and her four siblings were born in). In March of 1944, she is just like any other normal 17 year old young woman; she has a happy family, together with the usual disagreements with her siblings from time to time, she lives in a nice house and has a big wardrobe full of pretty clothes, she has been educated at the gymnasium in Szatmár, and she's in a happy relationship with her former tutor Mihai (who is twice her age and not Jewish). Nowhere else in Europe were the stifling and ever-increasing restrictions, ghettoisation, and deportation of the Jewish community carried out swifter, more brutally, or with such enthusiastic support from the local populace as in Hungary and the areas of other countries (Romania, Slovakia, the Czech Republic) which had been annexed to Hungary in the late Thirties. As in all other Shoah memoirs taking place in Hungary, here too we see these things happening at light speed, with former friends and neighbors suddenly turning on them, and almost universal collaboration or silent support. Among the few people who show any kind of disagreement with what's going on are Yanos, the Hershes' grocer, and a man who slaps his little boy for shouting abuses at them as they're being transported to the ghetto in Szatmár. Otherwise everyone just looked, many of them shouting and throwing stones. It made me sick to read about the little boy who shouted slurs at them and wiggled his fingers in his ears as they were all being marched to the death train, as his mother smiled at him fondly. Already these small children had not only been taught but encouraged to hate.
Gizelle catches the eye of "Dr." Mengele when they arrive at Auschwitz because of her polka-dot dress, and the fact that she can speak German. She is made to stand at the head of the line with him and ask everyone his or her age, translating the answer into German for him. Because of this duty, she quickly comes to realise who's being sent left and who's being sent right. At the time, she still believes, or at least wants to believe, that the parents, elderly, and small children are being sent to a different barracks, and that they've been taken to a factory where they won't be harmed. However, she is puzzled by how most of the women over 35 and young women who happen to have children are being sent to the right, since they appear young and healthy enough to her to work in the factory with the other people. Doing some quick thinking, when her own family approaches, she is able to lie that her youngest sister, who is twelve, is really fifteen, which ends up saving her life; she also ups the ages of her other two sisters.
Haunted by her mother's final command to watch over her younger siblings and to save them, whatever happens, Gizelle does just that over the entire length of their internment. Her younger brother has been sent off to the men's section of the camp, but she's still able to look after three of her younger siblings. As bestial as their living conditions are, and as much constant danger as their very lives are in, she manages to keep all of her little sisters alive through the three camps they are in, along with a friend of theirs whom they adopt as their Lagerschwester and the fifth person in their row of five. During all of this time, she also somehow manages to shield her sisters from the truth of what has really happened to their parents and that they're in a constant life or death situation, even though just about all of the other teenage prisoners quickly realised just what had happened to the people who had been sent to the other side and knew that the constant selections they were then subjected to were similarly to decide who would live and who would be murdered. Luckily for them, the second camp they are sent to is a factory, where they have improved living conditions and don't have to worry about the threat of selections. In the factory, Gizelle also manages to get a privileged job as a waiter, which enables her to sneak real food to the other prisoners. She also keeps looking out for her sisters after the liberation, both during their recovery and then in the DP camp Feldafing in Bavaria. During their stay in Feldafing, they get in contact with an aunt and uncle in America, who start the process of sponsoring them for immigration. They also meet General Eisenhower while in Feldafing. The book ends with an appendix addressing the oft-asked question of what the world knew and when, and what the world did, or more accurately didn't do, as the Shoah unfolded. It also touches on events after the war, when immigration to the United States and Israel was still being held back by quotas, and how finally things were turned around for the survivors who were desperate to start new lives in those places.
My only complaint about this book is that it wasn't long enough! It would've been great had there been a few more chapters, completing the narrative of their time in Feldafing and their eventual immigration to New York, maybe even a chapter or two on their early days in the new land. Not enough Shoah memoirs have sequels or enough information on what happened afterward, even though the reader is often left wanting to know more about these people s/he has come to know and love so well. However, at least it goes further after the liberation than some books of this nature do, instead of only having a couple of pages describing what happened next.
Most moving book I've ever read.......2004-03-12
I've read this book about 3 1/2 times over the past 10 years and each time I just get more and more emotional about the contents. This is an increadable and heartwrenching first hand telling of the horrific treatment of jews during the holacost. I've read many many books and this one still haunts my thoughts and dreams to this day and the last time I read it was years ago!! I recommend this amazing book whole heartedly to anyone!
Not to be missed.......2000-10-29
Without a doubt, the best book I have read on the Holocaust. A stunning book, beautifully written.
