This is the best treatment manual I've seen for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. It presents a scientifically sound cognitive-behavioral therapy protocol in user-friendly language. Individuals with GAD can either work through it on their own or with a therapist. The Therapist Manual is excellent, too; I highly recommend both.

I was writing an article about homegrown mushrooms and was looking for a cookbook about mushrooms that I could recommend to my readers. I found this book lacking in imagination and containing some recipes that were not all together reliable. I concluded that I could not recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars From appetizers to soups and main dishes, recipes blend in all kinds of mushrooms.......2005-11-07

Most mushroom cookbooks on the market focus on only a few common varieties found in your everyday market, especially button mushrooms: not so Mimi Brodeur's Mushroom Cookbook: Recipes For White & Exotic Varieties. From appetizers to soups and main dishes, recipes blend in all kinds of mushrooms - and an index makes it easy to locate dishes for specific kinds of mushrooms. Herbed Veal Roast with Exotic Mushrooms and Cheesy Portabella Mushroom Sandwich are only a few of the dishes which are unusual and appealing. Color photos might have added even more attention to finished dishes, but the instructions are very clear and easy to follow.

          Book Description

Inspired by the popular embroidered redwork quilts of the early part of the century, Betty Alderman, a well-known collector and designer, brings a fresh, updated look to this timeless favorite with garden-themed and other new designs. Illustrations and patterns guide you through making a quilt with designs inspired by botanical prints. The traceable patterns can be used for embroidery, applique, quilting, or wearable art projects. AUTHORBIO: Betty's designs culminate from a background beginning with a fine arts education at Syracuse University, ownership of a yarn shop where she also designed needlepoint canvases, to the buying and selling of antique quilts while she was living in central Ohio. Her inspiration is derived from her past knowledge, her continued enthusiasm, and current research for her quilt pattern business, Betty Alderman Designs. REVIEW: Betty brings a fresh, garden-theme look to the current embroidered quilt revival! The traceable patterns can be used for embroidery, applique, or quilting. Illustrations help guide you in choosing a quilt: the Birds And The Bees quilt with a garden chair, birdhouse, birdbath, and bee skep; or Sunbonnet Sues growing flowers and winning a first prize, among others.

A fresh approach to an old idea.

Betty Aldermans' designs are updated and fresh, not the dour old penny square designs of yesterday. Her book contains 80+ designs and clear, complete, and easy-to-follow instructions for making eight projects. But that is just the beginning. The botanical, gardening, and small bird and animal designs lend themselves easily to mixing and creating your own original. The teacups and teapots are terrific. Best of all, Sunbonnet Sue finally received the facelift she so desperately needed. Alphabet Sue is just perfect for child's quilt. Sue with a tennis racquet is precious. I never thought I'd see Sue at a Xerox machine--definitely not your grandma's Sue.

If you're looking for a fresh approach to redwork, this book is for you.

Jane Adams tells you how to handle the ongoing challenges of postparenthood in this witty, commonsense guide to creating a healthy relationship with your grown children, whether you're an empty-nester or a "boomerang parent" with children and grandchildren living with you.

            Book Description

Is there life with your kids once you've raised them? In this groundbreaking book, a best-selling author and psychologist (and the mother of grown children, too) shows you how to keep your family together for a lifetime. Dr. Spock didn't tell you about Postparenthood, but Jane Adams does;in this wise, warm, witty, commonsense guide to creating a close, loving relationship with your grown children.

You raised your kids to be independent, strong, and think for themselves. So once they're grown, why is it so hard to let them do it? Jane Adams interviewed over a hundred mothers and fathers of young adults to learn how they've created closer, more authentic relationships with their kids than they had with their own parents. She offers practical wisdom about how to keep families together even when distance tugs at the ties that bind. Sensible tips on holding them close to your hearts while getting them out of your house. Good advice about helping them start their careers. And first-hand strategies on getting along with their mates, giving or lending them money, offering or asking advice, being a great grandparent, coming to terms with their lifestyles, and preparing both generations for the future.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible guide for older parents..........2007-05-12

This book is an excellent reference for those of us whose children have grown into adults and have their own families. The playing field is completely different from when they were children, and this book helps guide you on that journey to a good relationship with your kids and their spouses.

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful book to help you find your place in your adult kids lives.......2007-02-10

I thought I was the only one who felt like I could never say the right thing to my adult children. We were so close when they were at home and always understood that whatever I said, I wanted only the best for them. Once they were married and had homes and kids of their own, I felt a sense of loss along with the joy. Sometimes when I spoke to them the same way I thought I always had, I was met with a look or a comment that let me know I was overstepping my bounds. It takes time and sometimes hurt feelings to find the new boundaries and to know that they still love you and want to be close - just differently. I'm learning that on my own but this book made me feel much better knowing my situation isn't unusual. I highly recommend it!

            5 out of 5 stars GOOD book!.......2006-12-12

My 22 y/o son says: "Momma, you always read the funniest books." But, hey... this is uncharted territory I'm in, here. A Mom's Gotta Do What A Mom's Gotta Do. :)

And for the record, we get along FINE. I just wanted to know how to best support my kids as they leave the nest and stop thinking the world revolves around me (heh), continuing on their journey to adulthood.

This book answered a lot of my questions and reassured me about a lot of the bumps in the road, my feelings, etc. It's supportive without being preachy, covers a wide range of potential situations, and yet is short enough to be an easy read.

            Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Gift to all Parents of Adult Children.......2001-12-03

If you have children who are about to leave home...or if they're already gone, you need to read this book. In a humorous and easy to read style, Jane Adams will guide you through the difficulties of dealing with adult children. She will also offer ways for you to be less of a parent and more of a friend. One of the true gifts of this book is the advice she gives that you should allow your children to have their own version of their childhood without them having to defend it. This relieves so much tension between parents and their children! This book is a great platform from which your future parent/child relationship can grow.

            Book Description

Title: Biography of Sublime's Brad Nowell This is the first book ever about multi-platinum ska/punk/reggae band Sublime's frontman Brad Nowell. Inspired by the rich musical legacy he left behind, "Crazy Fool" is a 152-page stunning, visual interpretation of the late musician, who became the posthumous voice of the extreme generation. A collaboration between the Estate of Bradley Nowell and author Heidi Siegmund Cuda, "Crazy Fool" is a rule-shattering, graphic biography that takes as many chances as Sublime's music--indeed, the music that inspired it. Contributors include Brad's father, James Nowell; his widow, Troy Nowell; Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh and bassist Eric Wilson; and sister, Kellie O'Reilly--among others. Each section contains rare photos and original artwork. Check out sublimebook.com to view sample pages. Proceeds from the sale of "Crazy Fool" go to the Jakob James Nowell Scholarship Fund.

5 out of 5 stars A sentimental scrapbook for the Sublime fan.......2007-02-14

For those who think that fifty bucks is a lot to pay for this book, I'd like to say that I paid ten times that price. That's right, folks, I got this book for five-hundred bucks. It was worth every penny because I bought it directly from James Nowell, or "Papa Nowell" (Brad's dad), off of a certain auction website. As of this writing, James Nowell has about two dozen copies left in his archives and is auctioning them off, one per week, each with a personalized inscription to the buyer. Papa Nowell personally inscribed the book for my best friend who introduced me to Sublime. My friend and I will never have the opportunity to see Sublime live, so this is the closest we can get. (Papa Nowell didn't say so, but I'm assuming that proceeds go to the Jakob Nowell college fund.)

As to why this book, the only biography of Bradley Nowell, is out-of-print and so expensive, Papa Nowell kindly explained. The book's printer went out of business back in 2000 after only one printing of 11,000. Papa Nowell says there has been talk among Sublime managers of reissuing an edited version of this book, but so far there are no immediate plans. So what we have here folks is the time honored issue of supply and demand. There are millions of Sublime fans who would love to have this book, but only 11,000 copies in circulation. This is what is driving the book's price to fifty, one hundred, and in my case five hundred dollars.

As to the content of the book itself, imagine one of those Sublime booklets that come with the CDs (such as the booklet in Everything Under the Sun) but in an extended, book-sized form. All the Sublime graphics, artwork, and photographs we've come to be familiar with, but in a greater number and with some material we've never seen before.

What I found most moving about this book were the photographs of Bradley as a child, a young boy, and eventually as a young man. These are aspects of his life that we don't usually get to see. The photographs of Bradley with his father during that important trip to Jamaica, when Bradley was introduced to Reggae, were very poignant. The testimonial of a grade school teacher was beautiful; this teacher knew Bradley during his childhood when his parents divorced, and she remembers Bradley as a gifted but "fragile" young man who required extra attention and who related better with adults than with children his own age. The reprinting of Bradley's 1989 "writing proficiency examination" makes obvious why Bradley was in classes for gifted students. And reading James Nowell's testimonials makes it obvious where Bradley got his sensitivity.

I must say that I don't understand the previous comments about this book appearing one-sided and saying little more than "Brad is swell." There is quite a bit in this book that is challenging and critical of Bradley Nowell. For starters, Bradley's own mother comments that after her son died she was embarrassed by some of the footage of him that aired on television; she didn't understand or approve of the rock-and-roll lifestyle. Bradley's widow, Troy Nowell, describes Bradley's mother as coming from a very structured and conservative Christian background. Troy says she regrets that Bradley's mother was allowed to choose the minister who officiated Bradley's memorial, because he was too conservative and seemed to preach to Bradley's friends that they need to accept Jesus to be saved. James Nowell speaks candidly about being unprepared for married life with Bradley's mother. And everyone, Brad's friends, family, managers, etc., speaks candidly about Bradley's chemical dependency. What emerges is the portrait of troubled family, with the implication being that Bradley's sensitivity made it all unbearable for him. Troy Nowell herself openly talks about the problems within the family, saying that Bradley's mother didn't know her son but is now learning to know her grandson, Jakob Nowell.

Ultimately, this book makes palpable the lifestyle of Bradley, his family and friends, and the culture Bradley grew up in and lived in down in Long Beach, California. You feel you can inhale the atmosphere. Hopefully, there will be a reissue of this book at some point. Until then, you'll have to pay double, or in my case twenty-times, the original listing price. But if you are a Sublime fan and are able to get your hands on a copy, you won't regret it.

I paid $50 for this book, and I don't regret it one bit. It's a great look at Brad's life, from the good to the bad. It intensely describes his escalating drug problems which really serves as a reminder of how much they can screw your life up. There are tons of pictures too. I'd recommend this book to any SUBLIME fan.

                Book Description

Readers witness the life of a Jewish family who move from Russia to New York City to escape persecution and starvation and to make a new life. Fact-filled narrative and historical photos plus fictional letters and journal entries from 12-year-old Emma Markowitz and her family paint a memorable picture of the typical European immigrant experience in the 1890s.

                5 out of 5 stars Author Update.......2001-08-05

This book was written as a working tool for people with a basic understanding of managing cash, goal setting and taking steps to attain these goals. The intention was to direct and motivate readers to begin the journey on the road much less travelled to optimize their wealth over their lifetime. I tried to keep each key point very focused. The book was formatted to be used, written on and readily referred to---similar to a TV Guide. Since its publishing several details are a bit dated but the fundamental aspects remain time proven. Although dozens of personal finance books are written every year, including one written by Suze Orman with the same title, the action plan recommended in Chapter 3 has still not been expanded upon by any author. The key to serious long term wealth buiding rests with adopting the "net worth mix principle." Look for a planned revised update of the original The Road to Wealth in Spring 2003.
