The author creates an anticaption which allows the reader to look forward to each chapter. He also enables the reader to experience the "Vietnam Phenomenon" personally.
Type size and spacing allows for easy readng and a great book for quick, late night reading. Humorous and witty.

this is a must read book for those of us who served in the bush
as a combat infantry soldier. most of us never saw this side of
viet-nam. so you really should read it to get a new perspective
of some of the other things happening over there while we were
isolated out in the triple canopy jungle. this guy did two tours over there so he really does know what he is talking about.just read it and you'll see what i mean. it should do
you good to find something about that god-aful place that you

can actually laugh about or maybe even identify with.

It Ain't a West Texas Cotton Field !!!.......2003-09-02

A very unique tour on the road to manhood ! The very best real world saga I've read about Viet Nam ("Overseas Destination" - in enlistee lingo). Humorous as well as serious,with superb imagery and detail. Every page is well written, and let's YOU SHARE the experience as if you were there. A great book, written with emotion & feelings you won't forget, and can't put down once you start reading! Bravissimo...and let's see more from this author!

A must read about the Viet Nam experience........2003-08-16

I enjoyed reading this book very much. It made me laugh, cry, and laugh again. Everyone I know that was in Viet Nam has been very closed mouth about their experiences over there. I can understand the reluctance with the way all the people treated the returning G.I.s at the time of the conflict!! I was only a small child at the time but was very interested in my world and watched the news every day especially about Viet Nam. I am really glad the stigma has started going away and we are now seeing more about the experiences of "over there". This book gives you a real day to day look at the real happenings of wartime not the glamourized ideas you so often encounter in books and movies. I give a thumbs-up for this effort and am looking forward to more from this author. This tale was very witty and not in the least boring. A must read for anyone that is interested in a new look at the Viet Nam experience.

This is apparently a semi-autobiographical account of the `inventor' of television or a system of televising moving pictures by wireless that was mechanical and in the end scientifically discredited.

It is a bitty and somewhat incoherent account (finished off by his wife and son) from a man whose methodology was sincerely flawed and who never really recognised the fact. The text is generally meandering and full of irrelevant stories and lacks even basic accounts of the way his cumbersome system of recoding on cine film and then scanning the photographic images by a revolving mechanical disc was never really regarded as instantaneous TV .

In the end he was only the one of many around the world to develop a system to actually send moving pictures by radio - but not as we know it today!

A thousand things you didn't know about John Logie Baird.......2005-01-25

Autobiographies are usually full of pretension, self delusion and self importance, with a small measure of reality. Not this book. Read an autobiography by a man who writes his life story within a framework of harsh honesty. Enjoy his dry caustic wit and his amusingly frank assessment of others. Be enlightened to find that JLB was not the mad professor poring over weird and wonderful contraptions, but a sophisticated and cultured man who built a formidable business empire around the television systems he pioneered. Read about a man whose immortality is steadily gaining momentum.

The authors draw on unpublished and, in some cases, hitherto unknown material to present a comprehensive new account of the life of this enigmatic and controversial Scottish genius.

In January 1926 Baird was the first publicly to demonstrate real television. Other pioneering achievements followed, including the first transatlantic transmission, the first demonstrations of colour television and stereoscopic television, and the first video recordings. In the 1930s he twice televised the Derby, and was the first to demonstrate television technology in the cinema in both black-and-white and colour. During World War II he developed high-definition and stereoscopic television in colour, and invented the first all-electronic colour television tube. He also made significant advances in radio imaging, secret signalling, fibre optics, infra-red scanning, and fast facsimilie transmission.

Throughout his life he struggled with ill health and lack of funding, to the extent that he paid for his initial research efforts and his final, heroic, and perhaps most startling, developments out of his own pocket.

This balanced, thoroughly documented and splendidly readable account throws new light not only on Baird himself, but on many of those associated with him. Truth is separated from legend, and the facts are uncovered behind Baird's auto-biographical memoir, published in 1988 as Sermons, Soap and Television, the text of which can now be compared with a recently discovered manuscript containing his own corrections.

Fresh information is revealed about the 'lost' years in London and Hastings in the early 1920s, which includes for the first time details of the company Baird established to sell soap, his unconventional romance, and the Falkirk connection.

Special treatment is given to Baird's troubled relationship with the BBC, and in particular to the role played by the corporation's director general, Sir John Reith. There is a full account of Baird's brave efforts to establish a presence in the USA. Also disclosed is the background to the boardroom coup which resulted in Baird being relieved of his duties as managing director of the company which he had founded.

Hartford's family-run, Italian restaurant celebrates its third generation with a compilation of favorites, from Fried Eggplant, Cheese Fondue, Pepper Steak, and Green Noodles with Hog Jowls, to Fettuccini Alfredo, Duck Orzo, Pear and Gorgonzola Salad, and Conch and Squid Stew.

There's a chapter on "Stone Pies" (pizza), which includes Clam and Pancetta, and Grilled Pear with Stilton Cheese and Foie Gras, but for the most part, the food is solid and traditional and mouth watering. The sauce chapter includes an Anchovy and Caper Sauce, several wine sauces and a Gorgonzola sauce as well as pesto and tomato sauces. A must-try is a sauce no longer offered at the restaurant - a pesto made with salted peanuts.

There's cannelloni (made with real crepes), risotto and ravioli, Veal Marsala, Piedmont Beef and Chicken Cacciatore. There are also lots of family specialties and dishes inspired by customers and friends over the years. A fine addition to the series of restaurant cookbooks put together by regional food experts Jane and Michael Stern.

Dog Heroes.......2007-03-24

I sat down and could not put this down until I finished reading. Anybody who loves animals (especially dogs) will love this. I cried at several of the dog stories.

Phenomenal job on an inspiring subject.......2007-02-22

Nona Kilgore Power signed her book at BookExpo America and bought some of the hero dogs along -- the animals and their handlers received well-deserved respect from people in the long autograph line.

The author has done a fine job collecting beautiful photos of the dogs and interviewing their handlers on what they did at Ground Zero, the Pentagon, Fresh Kills and in Shanksville, Pa. There is undeniable heartache in the fact that so few dogs found bodies let alone survivors. But the search was necessary and the fact that some search teams couldn't hide their disappointment just demonstrates that courage requires forging ahead even if the outlook is bleak.

Some of the notable stories here include that of Piper, a shepherd hero from New Jersey who helped find the bodies of 15 firefighters.

More often, the dogs' role was like that of golden retriever Bretagne (Brittany), from Texas. Her handler Denise Corliss relates in the book, "Sometimes she would leave my side and go sit next to a firefighter. Not just anyone ... she was very deliberate about whom she chose." Often she found a silent firefighter and joined him in a solemn moment.

Corliss remembered how unexpected the dogs' roles were. "One man especially stands out. He started petting Britanny and told me he didn't even like dogs. He knelt down beside her and told me his best friend was missing. His friend really loved dogs and would be very upset if he didn't pet this dog."

Other dogs consoled the families of victims at the Pentagon.

"Dog Heroes of September 11th" is certain to inspire more Americans to get involved in canine search and rescue and to help us remember those dogs, many of whom have retired or passed away in the past five years, who didn't hesitate, despite conditions infinitely worse than those they had seen in training, to search deep voids in hopes of finding people they could help.

If you're a fan of K9 helpers like me, you'll love this book. It was a great look at so many dogs, their trainers, and their stories. Truly great to see and read about all these dogs, their efforts make you feel warm inside :)

Thoughtful and insightful reading.......2006-08-09

People always said I "had a knack" for growing and nurturing sick plants back to health. I have alot of houseplants and enjoy taking care of them, watering, pruning, repotting, etc. I could never understand why other people couldn't "grow" plants (afterall, plants grow themselves!) or even didn't like plants! But when I read Judith Handelsman's book, it became very clear that this "bond" with nature/plants comes naturally to some but it IS something that can be learned. Through this book and her shared experiences, I learned about myself and how I relate to people, plants, and situations. I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand and/or further expand his relationship with nature.

I just ran across a used copy of this book and have heartily enjoyed it. Handelsman's experiences with the remarkable presence and intelligence of plants mirrors my own. Learning to meet plants on their own terms is truly an art and such a rewarding one. Handelsman tells her experieces very simply and honestly. Anyone who has approached plants, trees and gardens as a place to grow both their own spirit and sense of community with the natural world will recognize a kindred spirit in this writer. I particularly enjoyed her focus on interacting and learning from houseplants since that opens the experience up to both urban and rural folks who want to explore interacting with plants in a deeper rather than just decorative manner. I'm thrilled to have found a simple book with simple wisdom that opens another level of love and awareness of life.

I loved this book. She risks it all to explain how she has come through many personal trials and tests in her life. This is not an easy topic for any person to relate, but Judith takes it one step further and finds nurturing messages in the care given to her plants and herself. Well written, not hoaky, but honest. Highly recommend it!

Family Counseling and the "FamilyMind" Idea.......2003-11-11

Don Elium is a marriage, family, and child counselor in private practice. Jeanne Elium has worked in child development, as a parent educator, and is most importantly the mother of a son and daughter. These two authors also wrote the RAISING A SON and RAISING A DAUGHTER books.

Dealing with typical obstacles that all families face, the Eliums came up with a concept they call "FamilyMind," which will be of great interest to anyone working in the family counseling area.

I found the greatest value in the chapter on "Conflict: An Opportunity for Intimacy," which presents a postitive way to use family conflict for the family's own benefit.

Book Review: King Solomon and His Magic Ring, by Elie Wiesel.......2000-10-18

Elie Wiesel's new children's book, King Solomon and His Magic Ring, is an unpleasantly surprising work. Wiesel, author of over forty works of fiction and non-fiction, stuns readers with an uninspiring, bland retelling of a famous legend. He attempts to catch our children's attention with a thin spidery plot that is difficult to grasp.

As a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Wiesel could have done much better for himself. Instead, he has written one more book that we are able to add to the growing pile of poorly written children's books lacking in stimuli. Surely, "Not only was Solomon the wisest of all rulers, he was also the mightiest." (12). Well, not only is that line cliché, it's also not something that would excite a young mind.

Speaking of exciting, the paintings featured in this piece are of very high quality and talent. However, they are not suitable for children. The art is too dark and depicts demons, giants, lions, and other things that might frighten younger readers. In addition to boring or perhaps scaring today's youth, Wiesel has also managed to impress upon them a couple of incorrect teachings, including one about women. "Solomon's worst mistake? His marriage to the daughter of the Pharaoh." (36) The daughter of the Pharaoh gives a poor example of women. The book describes her as an enthralling dancer who later tricks Solomon whilst he is under her spell. Not all women are evil temptresses out to control men through manipulative ways; the author should make that clear.

Now, what about this magic ring? "From the moment he slipped the ring on his finger, Solomon's authority extended over everything from spirits and animals to the wind." (14) That sounds a bit like mind control. Add that to the way Wiesel portrays King Solomon; a reader might think Wiesel was advocating ruling with an iron fist. Children's books are meant to be entertaining, yes, but not to cause the youngster to reach for incorrect ideals.

Our media claims `90's youth is desensitized to television murders and sex in the movies. However, since children are taught that books are the alleys towards truth, they tend to try to learn from them, rather than media. Let Wiesel not inadvertently poison the minds of tomorrow with works such as this.
