Good account of Army of the Tennesse.......2007-05-26
Like other accounts the battle details are sketchy, particularly Shiloh but all in all an interesting account of a soldier who served a long term of service in an elite regiment (by standards of the western theatre), the First Arkansas. The problems of supply and morale are well documented. The footnotes are very thorough and add alot to the enjoyment of the book I found.

This book contain the highlights of a private's life in the Army of the Tennessee. It talks about Private Beven's travels and life in the army. If you are looking for details of combat, look elsewhere. Book contain a few details of a private's life. Book doesn't have many details, but over 40% of the book is footnotes by the editor informing the reader about event or people sited by Beven's.
Very detailed, engaging memoir.......2001-02-22
Readers who enjoyed Watkins' Co. Aytch will like this too. It doesn't have the absolute spark of genius that the latter shows, but it's an engaging, detailed account of Bevens' experiences in the Army of Tennessee. He includes many interesting and often humorous anecdotes; the only weak section is the very end of the war, because Bevens was lucky enough to be on furlough at that time. The editor has done an excellent job of annotating the text -- at first the format, with the footnotes on facing pages, is a little confusing, but it soon becomes very helpful. Sutherland fills in gaps and explains minor errors in Bevens' account while placing the events in their larger context. The only thing I have to complain about is the maps, which are useless.

I find that the author made very valid statements on the state of our society regarding obesity. The very wordy book had a tendency to seem redundant and offered "what is" but not necessarily "what should be done." I did enjoy the book, found it very informative, and concur with the contents.
Should be required reading for educators.......2006-03-02
This is a well-written and thoroughly researched book on the epidemic of childhood obesity. The author spends a lot of time on solutions---incorporating exercise in the schools and at home, changing diets and she also discusses (though in less depth) more radical solutions such as surgery and in-patient treatment.
At the end, I had little hope that anything would change in America. Too many studies show great reluctance on the part of parents and schools to make any real, lasting changes.
Extensive look at childhood obesity........2005-04-04

Okie does skip around a little in the book which does interrupt the flow of the book ie in one paragraph she may jump from one idea to the next, but overall the book flows pretty well. She covers alot of ground!

Incredible! Even better than I had hoped..........2002-09-27
I am a big fan of tea. I also love meals that are both simple and elegant. I'm not your traditional "homestyle" cook. That said, I also hate fussy, pretentious food that requires a lot of time and fuss in the kitchen. This book was very much what I was looking for.
The ideas presented here are flavorful and innovative. The presentations are simple, but lovely. The color photographs are plentiful, and beautiful. There is a photo of every recipe in the book. I don't know about you, but I love to see what the final product looks like.
Some of the recipes are easier than others. None of them require hours of work and preparation. Also, some have a short list of ingredients.
Finally, there are a variety of ideas here ranging from Asian and Thai inspired dishes to some more "fusion" cuisine. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cooking and is looking for something "different" but not too complicated.

While many tea cookery books focus on foods to serve with tea, this book shows you how to use tea as a basis for cooking a variety of foods. Beginning with a general introduction of tea, the book goes on to teach the reader about various types of teas, how to brew and store them, and then how to cook with them.
This book is great for the newcomer or the experienced tea lover, the professional and not-so-professional cook. With beautiful pictures and recipes like Smoked Chicken Salad with Tea Vinaigrette, Tea Cured Salmon, (my favorite) Spring Rolls with Thai Tea Sauce, Tea Smoked Chicken, Earl Grey Truffles and Chai Ice Cream to whet the appetite, how could you go wrong?

I'm glad I bought this book........1998-08-15
In the half-year since I bought _Mile-a-Minute Afghans_ I have started two of the afghans and have others in mind to do in the future. Its color pictures help in picking out a next project from it. Its instructions are clear, and it contains a variety of patterns--baby afghans and adult-sized, flowery, plain, and one with chain loop braid, which looks fancy but is easy to do. The feature that makes the afghans in this book mile-a-minutes is that they are made in strips, a nice compromise between squares, which require more joining, and one-piece afghans, which get hard to carry with you after a while, especially if you're making an adult-sized afghan. The one thing that I have had to keep in mind while working my first projects from this book has been that the edgings for the strips have not turned out well when I have followed the instructions exactly, but I have had to make only minor adjustments to solve the problem, and I can't be sure that it isn't my stitches, rather than the instructions, that are the problem. At any rate that small problem has definitely not made me at all sorry that I bought the book.

This book about growing plants indoors follows Sonia Day's highly regarded book The Urban Gardener: How to Grow Things Successfully on Balconies, Terraces, Decks. Growing plants indoors is a much more limited topic and unfortunately this is a much more limited book.
The book starts with descriptions of some 20 easy-to-grow indoor plants such as dracaena and croton and some plants that are better avoided. It describes how to grow amaryllis, herbs and African violets, how to treat holiday plants and how to force bulbs. It goes on to discuss the importance of the correct level of light, tips for watering, growing plants from seed and dealing with plant pests and diseases. There is really nothing here that is new or original and there were many common plants - Boston fern and hoya come to mind - that barely rated a mention.
On the plus side, Sonia Day's writing is always fresh and light. It's a pleasure to read her prose even about the most mundane of topics. She is knowledgeable, not only growing plants successfully, but also about finding sources for research.
But there was so much lacking in this book - what about bromeliads, bonsai, cacti and succulents? What about using plants in specific rooms - the kitchen, dining room, bathroom? What about terrariums and mixed plantings? It was a disappointment to find such a limited and pedestrian approach from a respected and able writer.

Soul Trek is a fascinating and exceptionally well-written book about a most intriguing subject: the bonds between parent and child both before and after birth (even before conception). Hallett has done an impressive job on a controversial subject, steering carefully between sensationalism and skepticism, while at the same time maintaining a warmth and readability that make it hard to put the book down.
This is a beautiful piece of work. Almost every paragraph calls forth memories, hopes, thoughts, and dreams. I highly recommend it, not just to parents, but to anyone open to new ideas about the nature of interpersonal attachment and our place as humans in society with others.

Tony Gold weaves together the ongoing stories of Osbourne family. Between the pages of this book, you will find a comprehensive history of the Osbourne family and their most recent experiences before 2003. The book includes a nice photo collection and it is a joy to read. Along with Gold's other Osborne's book, "Officially Osbourne" and the DVD series, you will have a keepsake of entertainment,insight and a broader understanding of the phenomenal family. As time goes by, I believe we will all come to appreciate them, Ozzy, of course, Sharon, Kelly and Jack, more, as they move on to new and varied enterprises.

I loved this book. When you watch the show you get an edited version of the family so it is nice to have something that gives you true insight. I especially loved that Aimee put her views in. I really think Sharon is dynamic and an inspiration to all women. There was a part that I think about daily, Sharon said that in America its more acceptable to be a drug addict than to be fat. If I could pick one family to have dinner with this would be my choice thanks to this book!
A Family That Loves Each Other.......2004-04-10
I bought and read this book and was quite amazed about the honesty and the love this family shares for one another. I give Sharon a lot of credit on what she has been put through in her marriage to Ozzy. She is an amazingly strong person that is dedicated and truly loves her family. Ozzy has survived such difficulties with drugs and drinking. Thank God he is still with us today to create the great music that he does. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about a "real" family behind the scenes.

I am soooooo happy that I opted to purchase this book. Not only was the story fascinating and at times sad, it gave me a huge perspective on Ozzy's behavior and what makes him tick. The photo bonus in the middle of the book is a true treasure. It was so good, I read the whole thing from cover to cover in less than 3 hours! Definitely worth every penny spent!

As a young child, Esther Hautzig and her family were forced into Siberian exile by the Communists for being capitalists (and thereby inadvertently escaping the Nazi holocaust in Europe), which enables her to bring a personal passion to Remember Who You Are: Stories About Being Jewish. In this anthology of true stories of men and women who lived and died during the Holocaust, the reader is treated to a candid, informative, and occasionally inspiring exploration of the challenge and solace of the Judaic faith on the part of Jews living in Vilna, America, and Israel. There is Esther's vibrant young aunt who sacrificed her life so that her own mother would not die alone in the Shoah; the story of 6,000 Jews rescued in 1940 through visas given by Chiune Sugihara, a remarkable Japanese consul in Lithuania, the story of Barry, a drug-addicted musician who was transformed by Orthodox Jews, as well as Ada and Eddy, whose lives were saved by righteous Christians during the years of the Holocaust. Very highly recommended reading for students of Judaic studies and Jewish life, Remember Who You Are offers true life examples of finding life through faith, sacrifice, redemption, achievement, and community.
