Book Description
Nobel Prize winners and other scientific greats reveal the secrets of the universe, human nature, and the mind. In this unique book, celebrated biographer Denis Brian draws on some of the greatest scientific minds of the twentieth century, in pursuit of their distinct views on life, knowledge, and the cosmos. A provocative and revealing interviewer, Brian weaves together the insights and personal stories of a stellar cast of Nobel Prize winners and other luminaries, including Linus Pauling's ill-fated support of Vitamin C as a cure for cancer, Ashley Montagu's explanation of why the sex drive is not innate, and various personal recollections of the making of the atomic bomb, Heisenberg's role in Nazi Germany, and the spy case of Klaus Fuchs.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting & informative.......2004-05-05
There are shortcomings in this book. I absolutely agree with the previous reviewer: First, the interviewer (the author) is untrained in even the basics of science, and some of his questions are silly. (The most hilarious example I can think of is when Brian asked Bethe how close do you have to get to the Sun, like in a spacecraft, before being pulled into it by its gravity. Bethe's answer: Long before that happens, you'll be burned to dust by the heat. He dryly added, "I never thought of such a question." Talk about stupidity.) The other fault is Brian's interest in the paranormal. Few of the scientists he interviewed share this, although Jastrow did say that really advanced beings on othernets might be able to communicate by means which we would classify as ESP. For this fascinating subject, Brian should have talked to Brian Josephson, the Nobel laureate in Physics who happens to be obsessed with the paranormal (surely the only Nobelist in the world with this unique distinction).
The most interesting parts of these interviews concern the scientists' religious views. And indeed this is the key strength of this book which in my opinion redeems its faults. This book is worth the reading for this alone if for nothing else.
If Brian thinks about a second edition, I'd strongly urge him to consider interviewing Steven Weinberg, Alan Guth, Brian Greene, Martin Rees, John Schwarz and Edward Witten.
Witten especially. There is almost universal consensus nowadays that Witten is the most influential physicist since Einstein, perhaps since Newton even. Indeed, in physics Witten is equal to Einstein and superior to Newton, while in mathematical contribution Witten is equal to Newton and superior to Einstein. Where Newton beats both Einstein and Witten, it would be in astronomy (neither Einstein nor Witten is an astronomer); and where Einstein beats Newton and Witten, it would be in his impact as a philosopher. Einstein was a philosopher not only in his knowledge of philosophy but also for the huge effect relativity has on philosophy itself - a point not lost on Bertrand Russell and other professional philosophers. As a theoretical physicist, Witten is perhaps "purer" than both Newton and Einstein because he is no philosopher, unlike Einstein, and because he doesn't waste his time on dumb things like alchemy and chronology (making prophecies from a literal and careful study of the Old Tesatment & other scriptures), which cost Newton more time than physics, math, and astronomy combined. Witten's religious and philosophical views are of great interest. Since no one seems to have found these out and written about them, it would be a great scoop for any journalist to do so. (Witten once refused giving "personal details" to a writer from Scientific American - not even what his college major was at Brandeis! - but with growing fame and honors he might have mellowed a bit. Let's hope so, or else Witten would have another thing in common with Newton (but not with Einstein): a prickly and difficult personality.)
a mixed bag.......2004-05-02
This book starts out with a great chapter on Linus Pauling, and four or five more fairly compelling interviews. However, the author seems to have some strange fixations that damaged the reading for me. He'll be interviewing a world-class cosmologist and will suddenly start asking very mundane questions about Mars that any reader could inquire about in text books or from myriad other sources. The author does a great job talking about God, religion, and philosophy with these scientists, but then will diverge into some bizarre topics, like ESP and hypnosis. I mean, are ESP and hypnosis really that interesting? It seems these issues are brought up in almost every interview. It's quite distracting after a while.
I might rate it a 3.5 stars. There are some truly excellent passages with profoundly interesting conversation. If you are doing serious research on any of the subjects, it's probably worth reading at least that chapter.

Taking the 'Sin' Out of Cinnamon Rolls.......2007-03-29
With three children in Iraq during the first Gulf War and weighing 300 pounds, Joanna Lund found herself thinking about death. After losing 130 pounds, Healthy Exchanges was born, and this cookbook is the latest in her series.
Although a discussion about Splenda's safety would have been helpful, recipes like Decadent Fudgy Brownie Pie, Classic Cherry Cobbler, Cappuccino Cheesecake and even Choca-Cola Cake are sure to delight dieters. Not every recipe works, but many do. So can we finally take the "sin" out of cinnamon rolls? This book says yes - and I tend to agree.
GREAT BOOK.......2007-03-08
I am a lifetime Weight Watcher and involved with diabetics. This book has been a tremendous addition to my kitchen and I certainly recommend it.
Disappointing but not a Total Waste.......2006-12-27
I am diabetic and my husband is borderline diabetic, so I had high hopes for this cookbook. I don't know what the people who gave these recipes good reviews are used to eating, but I have baked for a great many years and am used to the taste of traditional baked goods. I agree with the reviewer who wrote that the texture of some recipes is inedible, the gingerbread for instance and the brownie walnut pie is borderline. Most of the recipes need "fixing" to bring up the flavor. Lemon Crumb Bars--what a disaster! Two of the ingredients are 21 small fat-free saltine crackers made into crumbs, and reduced-fat biscuit baking mix. Can you imagine how salty this combination is? It was to be the cookie base for the bars and it just tasted like saltine crackers. You could barely taste the lemon flavor. What was the author thinking?! What was I thinking to even try such a recipe, for that matter?
I did have some successes. I really liked the Buttermilk Coffee Cake although it needed it's crumb topping spiced up. I also liked the coconut-rum-pineapple pie, but the texture was much better after it sat overnight. I will keep trying recipes off and on in hopes a few more of them will turn out well.
The hints about baking with Splenda are helpful, as is the nutrition breakdown at the end of each recipe.
Yummy Low Carb, Low Fat Baking!.......2006-06-08
Due to a sugar metabolizing problem, I have been trying to find new ways to create some of the desserts that I love without all of the sugar. Lowering fat in dishes is also a concern for my mother, who suffers from a pancreas disorder. So, with those things in mind, I picked up this book to see if you could really substitute Splenda in most baking recipes. I was not disappointed.
Using ingredients that are easy-to-find or often on hand, I was able to whip up a simple dessert or yummy baked good that had low fat and low sugar without subtracting the taste. Unlike a previous reviewer, I had no problems with lack of taste in any of my dishes (and I rarely, if ever, use salt when baking...why add the sodium unless you absolutely have to?). I take great pride in my baking, and love to create yummy desserts for my family, and I was able to serve several of these dishes without any negative comments. I was happy they turned out so well, and it feels good to be serving a dish that is lower in fat and calories.
Some of our favorites include: Blueberry Orange Muffins, Heavenly Raspberry Chocolate Chip Muffins, Strawberry Dream Cake, Country Carrot Cake, Cheesecake Topped Fudge Brownies, Five Layer Bars, Country Baked Pudding, and Pineapple Rum Cheesecake. Enjoy!
BAking with Splenda by JoAnna Lund.......2006-03-09
This book not only is filled with delicious recipes but it gives hints on use of Splenda and how to adapt it to your own recipes. I was delighted to find many of my old favorite tried and true recipes already adapted. Becky's Prize Winning Banana Bread recipe is a favorite that has replaced my own as it rates as good or better.
Being a borderline diabetic, I am happy to announce that I have yet to have one of the recipes in this book raise my sugar count over the accepted range.

Susan Powter Rocks!.......2007-01-19
I highly recommend any products by Susan Powter, even though she is a bit crazy (your children under 14 or so do not need to read some of them becasue she is a bit crass) but her advice is timeless, not faddish and right on. Great book.
Amazed me and my toddler!.......2006-08-02
I have a super picky 2-year-old. Potatoes are her only veggie. Thus I ordered this book. So far I have tried two recipes that, quite frankly, did not sound appealing to me at all. But she devoured them! Wow! (I tried them and like them myself, too.)
I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking new ways to make healthy foods for picky eaters.
Start with the Wafflewiches! They are a real winner!
Realistic Low fat recipes!.......2006-02-28
I love the recipes in this book. They are easy and use ingredients that everybody has.. without expecting you to eat tofu and weird stuff you've never heard of. My husband and kids love the recipes that I've tried so far. Susan shows how to make very tasty and filling meals without the fat. Nobody would ever know the difference! I highly recommend this book.
Kids love it!.......2003-08-29
Susan is so awesome. Her recipes are easy and I enjoy them too.
I am very glad I bought this book as it can be very hard to eat and cook low fat meals. I highly recomend this book for anyone looking to cook low fat quality food for their kids!
A very good cookbook for the entire family.......2002-11-12
This is the only cookbook that my kids really like. All the recipies that I have tried have been recieved with no gags or negative comments. I bought this cookbook years ago, when it first came out. The recipies are heathly, yet flavorful. My kids even like the veggie dishes. They love the frankies in a blanket and the turkey meatballs. None of the recipies take very long to prepare and are easy to make ahead and freeze. Susan Powter knows what kids like!

avoid all these CG adapted from the film series........2007-09-29
the art is awful! just freeze frames from a poor quality film. the stories are garbage too. they jump to the conclusion, and only seem to be written to correspond to the bad pictures. forget these curious george titles, they are all being rewritten. the CG visits the aquarium used to be one of these crappy film adaptation but recently got rewritten and redrawn. better off with the higher quality titles not written from the film series.
Too Bad It Shows a Man Smoking!.......2007-06-06
Adapted from the stills of the Curious George film series, Curious George Visits the Zoo would be a decent addition to the CG books--except that it shows a man lounging on a blanket in the park with his wife and young child...while smoking a cigarette!
This past weekend we visited a bookstore and my son wanted not one, but SEVEN Curious George books to add to his collection (he already had several at home). Curious George Visits the Zoo was one of the books we bought.
Because my son wanted 7 books--and because they were Curious George--I didn't feel a need to screen them. Imagine my surprise when I read the book at home and saw a man smoking on one of the pages!
Fortunately, the man holds the smoking cigarette in front of his body (while smoke curls towards the sky)--and his shirt is gray with dark stripes. I took a pencil and shaded out the cigarette and it blended OK. Because the stills of the animated series are sort of fuzzy anyway, I did a decent job of disguising it.
Still, images like this do NOT belong in a children's book!
Other than that, the story is fine--typical mayhem as George steals the zookeeper's bucket of bananas which causes a little boy to lose his red balloon (he ends up crying!)--sending his Mom into a panic. George saves the day, as usual, but really--he's just remedying a mess he caused in the first place!
This book is geared towards ages 4-8, but has less text than books like Curious George and the Puppies. If you don't mind books featuring smoking adults (!)--or are willing to shade out the image with a pencil--then it's a decent Curious George book. But why bother, when there are better books in the series that DON'T require such touch ups?
Another great George classic.......2007-04-10
Once again we meet George... as usual he's finding trouble but in the end it all works out. Rated 4 stars because although this book was written many years ago, some people might find the caged animals objectional. Thank goodness zoos have come a long way since this was written. My toddler loves both George and zoo animals so in the end it was still a great read.
Any Curious George is a Classic.......2007-04-09
Any Curious George is a Classic for kids. It's relatable because my twins are as curious as this monkey.
George steals in this one.......2007-01-24
I really don't like that George steals in this, even though they do point out this as a fault. It's ok, but not one of the best.

It is really a good book for kids. I like the great information about animals in this book.
My Visit To The Zoo.......2003-03-17
This book was very interesting, and I think this is a great book for kids to read. This informational, yet very interting, and fun to read book, tells kids a lot about animals. Even though this does talk a lot about information, I enjoyed it, and I think many other kids will to.
I would recommend this book for children of all ages, because of the information that it sends out, and the way they turn it into a wonderful story. My favorite part of the book, was when they were telling me about all the different kinds of monkeys and all the indangered species. I hope that many children will read this book.
Great message, but not a five star book..........2000-05-10
I appreciate the message that this book sends, in teaching children about endangered species. The book spends most of the content in providing information on the animals in their habitats, yet tries to pass the information off in a story. I think the facts provided are wonderful for children to learn, and the illustrations do help lure the children into asking questions, but overall the book lacks a little in keeping a child's attention. Not quite a five star book, as a result, but very worthwhile information on endangered animals.
Book Description
Filbert MacFee is having a lively time in the hospital. When Nurse Skeeter is ready to give him a shot, he turns into a thick-skinned rhinoceros! The moment he sits in an ice-cold wheelchair headed for X-ray, he becomes a penguin. Crafty Nurse Beluga outwits Filbert in all his animal transformations, but good news comes at last-Dr. Kebob! Once he stops being an orangutan, he tells Filbert he is well enough to go home. Rollicking verse, a quirky cast of characters, and Sue Truesdell's inimitably zany drawings turn a hospital stay into a reassuringly comic escapade.

A book filled with outloud chuckles!.......2004-02-05
I have an almost three year old and we found this story at the library and she LOVES it! Our daily storytimes are wonderful and only two days after getting the book, she can predict which animal is next and loves to repeat Nurse Beluga's phrase, "This is a hospital, not a zoo!" Its a great story for adventure and whimsy, even if you do not have a child in the hospital to worry about.
Hospital silliness for your kids.......2002-07-24
A simply wonderful book. Being in a hospital is tough for a child. This book puts a wonderful twist on hospital stays. A well written, wonderfully illustrated book. Highly recommended.

Birds of a feather.......2000-07-12
My two year old loves this book and it is a frequent bedtime book for her. The pictures and "bio" information on the birds is entertaining as well as informative. The book has gotten her looking up to explore instead of just at her feet.

Book Description
"The best parenting book ever written. I am recommending it to everyone."
--Gerald G. Jampolsky, M.D., author of Love Is Letting Go of Fear
A radical, new approach, Spiritual Parenting is a guide to caring for the naturally intuitive and spiritual core of every child. In the words of authors, counselors, and ministers Hugh and Gayle Prather, "This book reflects our deep personal conviction that parenting is a spiritual path, a form of worship." In their characteristically warm style, the Prathers offer a book of principles and practices that parents can use to understand and nurture their children at home, at school, and in the world. While a belief in God isn't necessary to understand and apply this approach, parents are encouraged to learn how to focus on the spiritual aspects of child care amid the bewildering everyday complexities involved in guiding children toward adulthood.
With humor and realism, the Prathers tell stories and anecdotes about their own children and the children of families they have counseled to help today's parents break through conflicting ideas, emotions, and impasses. Through Spiritual Parenting, they will learn how to cherish and enjoy their children at all stages of their growth.

A wonderful book with one reservation..........2002-07-06
The Prathers work is one of true insight and striking sincerity. I was touched deeply by it and continue to be as I refer back to it. One thing of minor note (and what prevents the fifth star) that is not mentioned in any review I read is that this book delivers a strongly Christian message. I am not a Christian, I do however keep an open mind and do not let my personal understanding of spirituality interfere with my acceptance of the wisdom this book delivers.
If we all could be parents like this.......2001-02-10
Or, what if I had had parents like this?? After sitting on my shelf for almost 4 years, I listened to the cassette tape version of this book several weeks ago. Somehow that was OK because I'm not sure that I really could have unederstood and taken this book to heart until recently (I was well prepped by reading Alice Miller's 'For Your Own Good' just before). I liked the tape because I could hear the Prather's own voices. And what they say is wonderful and loving for children. Unfortunately, what they recommend is not the norm in our culture. They recommend love, compassion and total respect for our child's identity. Our culture, on the other hand, increasingly speaks to discipline, punishment and abandonment. The world is changed one person at a time, and if only a few people become loving parents because of this book, then the world will be blessed with more stable, loving and creative children. - - If you want the other side of this paradigm, how socially accepted child-rearing, what most of us have been taught is 'normal,' frequently involves abuse and cruelty, then pick up anything by Alice Miller. Miller's work over the past 20 years underscores the value of the Prather's approach.
This book changed the way I parent forever.......2000-06-03
The Prathers laid out the rational for a parenting style that I instinctively knew was right. They also made some complex emotional issues seem very simple. I no longer get angry with my children. Its a must for all parents.
A MUST READ FOR ALL PARENTS!!!!!.......1998-10-23
Spiritual Parenting is the most valuable parenting book I have read so far and I have read a lot. As a Social Worker and single mother to a toddler, I was in awe of the Prather's insight and their light. I cried, I laughed and I loved this book. Their philosophy so matches mine and it felt wonderful to read about other parents taking parenthood so seriously. Truly, our children are gifts from God.
Excellent spiritual approach to everyday interaction.......1998-09-04
This book has started me on a path of child rearing I had only hoped to achieve with the birth of my first daughter. Having begun motherhood in my forties, it is especially important to me to become the mother I believe in. The Prathers have pointed me toward my goal. On the worst of days in the most stressed situations, there is always the perfect paragraph to help me adjust moods; better interaction with my little one undoubtedly follows.
Thanks to the Prathers, I believe I have an opportunity to forge a deeper, more long lasting relationship with my child and to approach my spiritual self at a much higher level.
If you are a parent, you need this book. If you have the book, read it. Refer back to it regularly. You couldn't give a better gift to friends and family.

Your Body's Calling Me: The Life and Times of Robert, R. Kelly.......2005-12-16
I wanted more, this book is just a series of interviews; first and second hand interviews collected and documented in one book. If you're trying to catch up on R. Kelly's career, then maybe you might enjoy it. But if you're someone who has already experienced The R. in real time, it may seem a bit redundant. I wanted to read first hand information from R. Kelly himself, not accounts from others who may or may not have been in his camp. I wondered about the abuse that Robert experienced in his life, the books description lead me to believe this book would cover that. It didn't.
This is the story you gotta hear!!! (3-3.5 overall stars).......2005-08-14
This book is amazing and incredible and mostly a good fantastic read dealing w/ the life and times, good and bad situations, trials and tribulations between himself Mr. R. Kelly (whose real name is Robert L. Kelly based off the book). He is a Chicago (or Chi-Town) native which ppl subscribe 'cuz he has the talents and abilities 2 be a successful superstar 2 a great inspiring Genius in the making of a variety of music genres i.e. R&B, gospel, jazz, pop, rock, hip-hop, rap---you name it.
Truly 2 me R. Kelly's the man and greatly the baddest producer, singer, musician, writer, songwriter, hardest workin' man and artist in the music biz since Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder did they thing. I truly cited the R. as the post-Marvin Gaye of our time like others like Barry White, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, just to name a few.
No matter whether he did right or wrong, he still 'gon remain the same like 2Pac, the world's best-selling rapper of all-time This is such good research in this bk. and I haven't even put it down yet. Read it in 2 consecutive days. Received it by mail yesterday and was impressed. It tells all the details which u heard and haven't heard...YET.
R. Kelly (named the Pied Piper of R&B), is truly my hero, my role model, on my top list, a great bigger influence, and truly my all-time favorite artist. I recommend books like Divided Soul: The Life of Marvin Gaye and Brother Ray all by David Ritz, Smokey, Inside my Life among other bks. by the same author, Miles Davis' memoir, Mase's (aka Pastor Betha of S.A.N.E. Church in Atlanta) memoir Revelations, Man in the Mirror by Patrick Morley (my favorite author), Emerging Church and Emerging Worship all by Dan Kimball, Moonwalk by Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones' memoir Q, Al Green's memoir, How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, Mercy Mercy Me: The Art, Loves and Demons of Marvin Gaye by Mike E. Dyson, most books by Napoleon Hill, Stephen Covey, Brian Tracy, among others. it's a still a Long List.
Deeply a must if u're interested.
Very great service.......2005-08-02
I ordered the book Your body's calling me: The life and times of "Robert" R.Kelly- Music, Love, Sex and Money. It was a very good book and I read it in one day. Even though it is an unauthorized biography of the artist, I do know that some of it is true from the quotes from other articles. Great book!!!
New Info.......2004-12-17
I refused to watch the R. Kelly tape because I figured it would probably make me look differently at this man. I'm not supposed to judge him on his personality. I'm supposed to judge his music. But doing the dumb, I read this book. I was relieved to find out that Aaliyah wasn't treated the same way as these other girls, but I still stick by my point--you cannot RAPE the willing, so R. Kelly being accused of rape is ridiculous to me. On the other hand, damn...this dude really has some issues. I didn't know his fetish was this heavy. Whew. But again, he didn't come to superstardom to make us love his personality. He came to make us love his music. And I still do (love his music). The author of this book has a strange way of repeating things like he forgot he already said them, but otherwise, it was a quick, informational read and I learned a lot from the book. I found out some information I didn't know already: like the situation with his brother, the Aaliyah turmoil, and I guess I was the only person in the world who didn't know he was married.
An Incredible book that explores everything about R. Kelly!.......2004-09-12
Knock, knock! Walk right in to the life and times, and under the cover scenes of R. Kelly without retakes, censorship or cover ups. R. Kelly is exposed in this bare-it-all unauthorized documentary by Jake Brown that is so explicit, raw and accurate, not even R. Kelly has stepped up to his own home plate to challenge the issues he's been battling from music, love, sex and money. It seems as if the song balladeer crooner/ hip hop R& B sensation has a musical overtone on the Black community with hits like " I Wish", " I Believe I Can Fly," "The World's Greatest" from the Muhammad Ali Soundtrack and" You Saved Me,"that have washed away his crimes of passion and won over the Black African community and even mainstream worldwide media, but not so fast...there are unbelievable up front and close pictures that depict four sides of the singer from explicit and controversial to scandalous and possibly the most revered R& B singers of the millennium. Take your pick. Finally, the real story is revealed to put the rumors to rest. Your Body's Calling Me: the Life and Times of Robert R. Kelly by Jake Brown is better than your front news headlines and a must read. Don''t wait for the movie, read the book.

Raoul Wallenberg:A Hero Allowed To Slip Through a Russian Sewer Grate.......2006-02-23
John Bierman's terrifically tragic Wallenberg biography,'Righteous Gentile' is divided into two parts;the first 119 pages lead up to his kidnapping by the Russians on
January 17,1945.The last 97 pages deal with the world's apathy in securing his release from the Gulag.Thousands of Jews and some non-Jews owe their lives to Wallenberg's intervention on
"behalf of the Swedish government"-which dealt with the Wallenberg kidnapping issue as buroucracies tend to do.Bierman's Wallenberg book was published in 1981-and there were credible reports that Wallenberg was still vegetating in the Soviet prison system. The sin of allowing this to happen-is beyond unforgivable.
Sweden's greatest samaritan.......2003-05-22
A five star book about a five star hero.
The second world war threw-up some gigantic figures but ironically Raoul Wallenberg from neutral Sweden towers over all the rest.
Like the Good Samaritan he didn't pass on by but instead left his safe homeland to assist others by putting himself in danger day after day in the inferno that was Hungary during the dreadful days of 1944-45.
The man who saved a 100,000 jews from the clutches of Adolf Eichmann, the SS, and the Hungarian facists, the Arrow Cross ultimately fell foul of the Russian 'liberators.' He was never seen again as a free man after being taken into 'protective custody' by the Reds on 17 January 1945.
I read John Bierman's excellent book some 20 years ago and he charts the extraordinary crusade of his subject with a deft touch.
This is a book that will both inspire you, with Wallenberg's humanity and courage, and anger you that such a man could lose his liberty after fighting so hard for the freedom and safety of others.
In the pantheon of heroes Raoul Wallenberg-the righteous gentile-would have to be at the very top
fitting tribute to a great hero.......2002-01-02
Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish aristocrat who managed to save thousands of Hungarian Jews from the gas chambers in the closing months of 1944. His relief agency in Budapest issued bogus Swedish passports to as many Jews as possible. By dint of his commanding personality, his ingenuity, and his talent for pulling the wool over the eyes of dimwitted Nazi functionaries, he contrived to convince the German and Hungarian authorities to respect these entirely extralegal documents. In mid-January 1945, he was summoned to the Soviet embassy in newly-"liberated" Budapest, and he was never seen again.
This is a great and inspiring story, and "Righteous Gentile" does justice to it. Bierman doesn't really succeed in explaining the origins of the idealism that led Wallenberg to volunteer for this job in the first place, but probably nobody could. What he does show is the skill and energy with which Wallenberg executed the task assigned to him. Actually "skill and energy" are ludicrously inadequate terms. Wallenberg not only distributed his passports, he tirelessly roamed around pulling Jews out of death marches and off trains bound for Auschwitz, he bossed Nazi thugs around in impeccable Hochdeutsch (and they listened), and he confronted Adolf Eichmann himself, all the while taking the most extraordinary risks. I can't say that Wallenberg was the greatest hero in recorded history, since I'm not familiar with all of it; suffice to say that he is by a very large margin the greatest hero I've ever read of, in fiction or history, and it is an inspiring and hopeful fact that someone like him ever existed. I am grateful to John Bierman for bringing this figure to such luminous and memorable life.
The only problem I have with the book is that half of it consists of speculations and rumor-cataloguing to the effect that Wallenberg was alive in the Gulag until about 1980. I believe that most authorities now think he was murdered by the Soviets long before this, perhaps after they failed to recruit him for espionage. This part of the book is therefore something of an anachronism. However, it doesn't detract from the general value of the book, which should be required reading for everybody, period.
An Inspiring Book.......2001-11-12
I read this book about 1982. I used to work the night shift at a hospital and on Sunday mornings, I recall listening to a Sunday Morning NPR talk show. One morning, Howard Cosel interviewed the author of Righteous Gentile. I was completely fascinated by this story that I had never heard. Howard was masterful in his interview and I was so taken that I immediately purchased the book and read it. It is riveting and I could not put it down until I had consumed it all. I am always in amazed wonderment at ordinary people who perform extraordinary acts under dire conditions. Wallenberg was such a man. The story is, of course, a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions, as Wallenberg disappears into the Russian Gulag. I irony of his imprisonment in the Gulag after having saved so many Jews from their fate in the Holocost. It is one of those books that is uplifting because it reminds us of both the good and evil that humans are capable of.
