This book was written to explore the contribution of Revolutionary War veterans to the founding of the American republic. By veterans, we mean all those who served in the Continental and state forces, on land or sea. Twenty three of those veterans were among the men who signed the Constitution in Philadelphia on 17 September 1787. That document, as the eminent American historian Samuel Eliot Morison put it, is "a work of genius, since it set up what every earlier political scientist had thought impossible, a sovereign union of sovereign states. This reconciling of unity with diversity, this practical application of the federal principle, is undoubtedly the most original contribution of the United States to the history and technique of human liberty."

Political commentary, inside and outside the United States, marvels at the ingenuity of federalism, Supreme Court case-law, the congressional system of "checks and balances", "separation of powers". These are important techniques essential for the political culture our country invented from 1790 onward.

However, none of these techniques would have taken hold had the character and moral (in the original Latin language and Scottish political economy senses of "custom, habit, usage, practice") understanding of the Founding Fathers not been forged among them, who were leading veterans from the War of Independence.

This excellent book was written in 1987 by their descendants in the US Armed Forces who, with much restraint, wrote about those "Revolutionary War" veterans in celebration of the Bicentenary of the United States Constitution.

The Treating and Beating book that's red and yellow is the SAME book as the green one. The green one is the 3rd edition and is much larger. I noticed that amazon's software tries to sell you both because the titles are slightly different - so please be advised. You can buy both but will be happier with the green one with the redwood trees on it.

This is a terrific book, it gives valid and interesting information as well as tips for improving your life, great info about vitamins, minerals and other supplements to try if you're tired of prescription drugs. And includes ways to integrate both Eastern and Western medicine, tips for a more healthy lifestyle, tests to ask for to determine if you have associated health problems. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is frustrated about being tired, and aching all the time- tips are great to help cope with this. I would really like to see the author, Dr. Murphree, in Birmingham, Alabama. In fact this my new goal.

Cucina Piemontese: Cooking from Italy's Piedmont.......2007-07-18

More often than not, when reviewing cookbooks, I flip through the pages and see three or four recipes that I know my family will enjoy and two or three more experiments that they'd be willing to try. I usually get two or three recipes that become ingrained into our regular family meals.

Cucina Piemontese was a bit of a deviation from this normal routine. As I looked through this cookbook, I found over a dozen recipes that I knew that I'd try to cook. So far all of the meals and deserts I have prepared seem destined to become regulars on my dinner table. I still have a few more dishes and a couple of desserts that I can't wait to make.

The easy to do instructions make these gourmet looking (and tasting) dishes to prepare. Moreover, I had all but a few of the ingredients right in my kitchen which is extremely rare with most good cookbooks. With a couple of the recipes, I also tried some substitutions and my own variations which turned out really well. I really like that these recipes fit me and my schedule rather than me having to take special time out of my life to create a great meal that everyone would enjoy.

It's not a Barbaresco, but ..........2006-05-06

It's always been puzzling to me why the region I think produces Italy's best wines -- the Piedmont -- was so ordinary (at least by Italy's high standards) when it came to its food. The region does give the world the wonderful gift of delicate and precious white truffles, but aside from that it seemed to be an exercise in heavy beef and stew dishes, unexceptional pastas with butter-based sauces, loads of melted cheese, and a dependence on potatoes and other root vegetables.

I picked up Cucina Piemontese on a recent trip to the Piedmont and while I doubt it will ever make me favor the ristoranti of Turin over the unforgettable osterie of Naples for eating well, it did give me a new appreciation for the cuisine of the Piedmont.

The weak point of the book is that it is short on seductive images for the regions rolling landscape. It could also be cross referenced better, meaning it should be easier to find specific recipes in more different ways -- by the course, by the matching with wine, by the main ingredients, etc. Also, there appears to be a flaw in the binding of the edition I have, though this may be a one-off problem.

In its favor, the recipes seem to be well thought out for preparation at home, and the translation from Italian is not flawless but it appears better than most. The book's real strong point is the context it gives to the region's maligned cuisine. It won't change the way the food tastes, but knowing that a recipe dates back to the royal House of Savoy, or that the cooks in Garibaldi's army favored it does create a new level of appreciation.

Foods from a Lessor Know Region.......2006-03-04

It used to be that Italian cooking came in two modes -- pasta with tomato sauce, and pizza (which of course isn't really Italian at all). On my first visit to Milan, I was astounded to find a wide variety of foods that didn't include pasta and tomato sauce. And these new foods were wonderful.

Only in the past twenty years or so have I started to notice that nearly every Italian restaurant has been branching out into the foods of other regions. First, there was just a choice of northern or southern Italian cooking. Now we are beginning to see foods from lesser known regions of Italy coming to the fore.

A good summary of this book comes from the recipie for Sugo di Carne or Meat Sauce. The book says 'If your idea of 'meat sauce' is lots of tomatoes with a little meat, you're not thinking of the Piedmontese version. This sauce has tomato, but it's really about meat.'

This is just one of the ninety five or so recipies included in this little book. They feature more beef, eggs, butter and cream than the more common (in America) Italian foods. This book brings a whole new range of Italian foods to your kitchen.

Technical...yet understandable.......2002-01-10

The authors did a wonderful job of compiling years of scientific research into a natural history book. This is definately a book for the more scientifically-oriented community. It is nice to see the technical aspects included, rather than oversimplifying the material into a "storybook." The missing star is for the price...but this is probably a matter related to the publisher rather than the authors.

An absurdly overpriced pamphlet masquerading as a book........1998-08-30

A person who pays $60 for a paperback volume on natural history might naturally expect to receive a fairly hefty tome. This book, however, is a mere 200 quarto pages cobbled together mainly from a series of technical papers. The language and style are classically dull, dry sciencespeak. Although said by its editors to be designed to appeal to a broad audience, it's strictly for bear bionerds. The clothbound version is even more outrageouly overpriced at $120! This thing is obviously aimed at people who have government grant money to throw around. And disregard the star at the head of this review; the software won't allow less than a one-star rating.

Pretty projects. Good instructions........2007-02-14

I bought this book because I saw some beaded flowers at a craft show and I thought I'd like to learn to do it myself. I had a little difficulty with the techniques in the beginning, but with practice and by frequently referring to the very nice, detailed pictures in the book, I finally got the hang of it and completed a fine looking poppy (if I do say so myself). I have since complete two other projects. I wouldn't go so far as to say the projects are easy or simple, but they are imminently doable. And last but not least, they provide the beader with a real sense of accomplishment.

Very nice beading book.......2005-12-29

This was the first French beading book that I bought. As a beginner, it was a little hard to figure everything out at first, but with some practice and the detailed pictures in this book, I was able to come up with a nice finished product. The things I liked about this book, specifically, were how the first project illustrated the four basic techniques that would be used throughout the whole book. Once I fished the poppy, I almost couldn't believe it would be that simple! I also liked how each project was unique by demonstrating a new concept or some variation of the original four basic techniques (for example, striping the tiger lily and split loop for the dogwood).
What I didn't like too much about this book was that some of the flowers occasionally use previous techniques or ones that are covered later, and so a bit of page turning had to be done.
All in all, the concepts are explained really well, the designs are lovely and the book itself is quite pretty if you just want to admire the pictures, so I highly recommend this book.

Great for beginnners!.......2005-04-03

This was the 4rd book on french beaded flowers that I picked up and I found it to be the best so far. The instructions are very detailed with photos of each step along the way. More detailed than other books I have tried to learn from. If you prefer photos showing the steps as opposed to just hand-drawn diagrams, then this is the book for you!

The pictures of finished projects are gorgeous! Wonderfully inspiring, especially the "fantasy flowers" near the back of the book.

The only minor quibble I have regards the order of introducing new techniques. Some of the advanced techniques are introduced in later chapters, yet are referenced in earlier flowers. The instructions with say "see page such-and-such for this technique", and you have to flip several pages later in the book to find out how to finish your flower. I think it would have been better to have each new technique introduced in order. But that is just a minor complaint based on my personal preferences.

Overall, a stunning book, well worth the money!

An Excellent Place to Begin.......2007-04-28

I have been creating French Beaded work for 4 years. This was my first book. It is true that there aren't a lot of projects layed out, but basic technique is thoroughly explained and illustrated which is an excellent place to begin. With the basic technique taught in this book it is quite easy to move forward into floral self expression. Advanced techniques may be found in other books and a number of project books are available on the market, but I have always held this first book in high regard for helping me master the fundamentals. Pictures of contemporary as well as vintage work provide inspiration. I feel that the combination of good sound basic technique and inspiring photos is a great launching pad for supporting a newbie to explore creating French beaded florals.

The instructions are sketchy. You can't really MAKE anything with this book...no projects...but the pictures of the finished pieces are pretty. I'd definitely go with a Dalene Kelly book before this one.

POOR resource, Pretty Pictures.......2005-09-18

Arlene Baker has obviously been hitting eBay pretty hard, because this book seems to show the fruits of auctions won. It is at best a collection of photos of vintage French Beaded Flowers. She gives mediocre directions for learning the basic techniques and throws in a few patterns for making trite blossoms into brooches.

But this book doesn't seem to know what it wants to be: basic guide, jewelry pattern book or Coffee Table Book? And It fails at all three. Better guides are available with the dover reprints (check out the Nathanson books.) Actually, any other beaded flower book seems to cover the basics better. There are Jewelry patterns out there for French Beaded Flowers, and anyone can take a pattern for a single bloom from any book and attach the flower to a barrette. Granted, had Baker given good clear directions on how to do this, I would give her credit for that. But alas, she fails to do so. And as a Coffee Table Book, well the photography is unremarkable, some of the actual flowers are pretty, especially the ones made by her friends who seem to be accomplished artists. But the majority of this book is a "show off". It is used to document a personal collection of vintage flowers. Great for insurance documentation. Unfortunately, there are no museum pieces here, no spectacular work. Nothing you can't find on eBay, that is if Arlene doesn't get to it first.

I am serious, if you want to look at pretty pictures of French Beaded Flowers, do a Google search.

Nice to look through, but..........2005-04-03

I thought that the structure of the book was very unbalanced. The instructions are nice, but they are all in the front part of the book, and are hand-drawn. Color photos of finished projects are in the second part of the book. I prefer a book that has step-by-step instructions included with each project. Also, not very many projects are included. I hate to say it, but I've seen better books on french beaded flowers. To be fair, there are some very nice arrangement that provide inspiration.

Nice to look through, but I wouldn't recommend buying it to keep.

Well I have looked into different books on beaded flowers and saw reviews of this book so I went to my local library and requested it. Well when I got it I sat and looked through it while I did like how the instructions were simple and clear I did find it was lacking in projects I got a few of the other books out there and feel they are much better. I did love the galeray of flowers in the middle of the book and would have rather had the patterns for some of those flowers instead. I will say if you really want this book find it at the library and copy the first few pages in techniques and return it. Don't buy it.

I'm a jobless agronomist.I read this good book, here in Brazil.This book is concise and easy to understand.It isn't only for agronomists or farmers.It is also for general public.Even the language is for the general public.
Failures of this book are small.To example, on page 146, this book has this sentence:"For example, the once-powefull insecticide DDT lost its effectiveness a long time ago".In fact DDT didn't lost its effectiveness.The DDT's ban came , because DDT was saving "too much" lifes in Africa, Asia and other places with colored races.
The small chapter about plastics from GMO, tells that they are too expensive compared to oil.Well, when this book was writen, oil had a price smaller than the half , compared to oil's price of today.Even with oil at so big price, plastics from transgenics costs too much; at least for general aplications.Agriculture can produce plastics without the use of GMO.If you have a biodigestor, you will have methan(CH4).Then almost all oil and natural gas plastics can be produced using this gas.

Excruitiatingly Repetitious.......2007-05-15

I had heard Dorothy Parker was a creative wit, but I found this bio to be about 200 pages too long, with little evidence of her writing. As Dorothy would say, "What Fresh Hell is This?!" As for Dorothy - didn't see much in the way of her 'talent', but as a person, she was a very negative, mean-spirited, self-absorbed, promiscuous drunk who sponged off anyone she could her entire life. What a pathetic existance. And poor Alan Campbell who was her devoted husband. It's a wonder all her excesses didn't do her in before her 77 years. I have 150 MORE pages to slug through. I will finish it but prefer to read about people who make positive contributions to humanity, not suck dry what they can from others.

I am a big fan and was excited to read this book. It was a good read on some days and eye-burningly boring on others. I DO suggest the book but don't feel bad about skipping over parts - you won't miss anything. It could have been 50-80 pages shorter with the same info.

I admit I knew very little about Dorothy Parker's life before reading this bio, and a decent amount after. But I must say I found this a very clumsily written, and apparently utterly un-edited, piece of work.

Just two examples, light and dark: on the light side, I suspect that Dorothy Parker herself would have found it hugely amusing to know that "She could be witty on paper, but her forte was oral agility."

Oral? Really? Are you sure?

Ah, the primitive howlings for barren animal love. Dorothy, we hardly knew ye.
