This War, It's Not a Game.......2007-06-16
When I was a boy, I played in a wheat field. It's where my friends and I played "War." We prided ourselves on our stalking skills. I thought I made the best sound for a machine gun. We imagined if we practiced enough, one day we could be in a real war, and we could be heroes, just like the ones we saw in the movies. In Diego Rayle's "Stay Out of the Wheat Field," one young man has gone off to a real war, the war in Vietnam. But this war is definitely not the war of young boys' imaginings. The GI has a younger brother. He fears his brother may follow in his footsteps. "Stay out of the wheat field" is his warning -- a warning to his brother, perhaps a warning to us. Four years ago, I wrote the following about Rayle's book:
"The Wheat Field itself is a danger, because it's wherever one is lured, or whatever activities lure one deceptively to a seemingly happier, perhaps nobler place that, in truth, imperils the body and the heart and the mind. Your soul can be sucked out of you in the Wheat Field." --Sibley J. Smith, Jr., Education Director, Vietnam Era Educational Center at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans' Memorial.

Book Description
From the renowned infant psychiatrist and author of the classic Diary of a Baby comes the first book to address the unique psychological transformation that occurs in women when they become mothers.
According to Dr. Daniel Stern, pregnancy and motherhood can have an enormous psychologically transforming effect on women, who find themselves guided by new hopes fears, and priorities. Yet these dramatic and frequently overwhelming emotional transformations often go unexplored in favor of discussions of morning sickness, exhaustion, and the relative merits of nursing and bottle feeding.
Based on interviews with hundreds of women, The Birth of a Mother paints a wonderfully evocative portrait that gives voice to those unexpressed thoughts, feelings, and fears that accompany motherhood. The book is an invaluable sourcebook for new mothers, validating the often confusing emotions that accompany the development of their new identities, as well as a resource that helps prepare pregnant women for the life-changing journey they are about to begin.

An important contribution to the literature about parenthood.......2005-03-07
"The Birth Of A Mother" is an important contribution to the literature about parenthood. How rare and wonderful that a book about mothering (and fathering) embraces the challenges of bonding with and raising a child with special needs. The authors help us consider how through the entwined mysteries of love and biology, an ordinary man and woman procreate a child. What is less obvious but no less profound is how a singular child gives birth to two parents. For at the moment of birth a woman becomes a mother, a man becomes a father, and two new fundamental identities begin to emerge. The heart of the book is the enchanting description of the psychological birth of the mother in the months that precede and follow the birth of her baby.
Through hundreds of interviews with new mothers and decades of clinical experience, the authors demonstrate conclusively how a woman's mental life changes fundamentally with the arrival of a baby. The striking change in perspective includes the shift from being a daughter to being a mother, becoming a part of the broad community of mothers, seeing one's husband become a father, forming a mother-father-child triangle, and an altered set of sensibilities that are brought to bear on every sight, sound, and smell of the new mother. In today's society, the new mother balances baby and career as she also finds a new role in her family of origin. A new era begins in the mother=s life as she counts time with a private calendar that is marked with her baby's age and developmental milestones.
Parents, clinicians, researchers, and academicians will all find lasting value here for their day-to-day lives. Uniquely in this volume, any reader can conceptualize the parents of children with special needs within the developmental spectrum of the parenting experience. In a broad sense, no child is perfect, and it is the bond that attaches the parent and the child that will sustain families over the long haul. How these passions develop has uniqueness and similarities for parents with children developing typically as well as those with special needs. In all cases, the infant cradled in the parent's arms is different to some degree, small or large, from the child fantasized in the mind, and the reconciliation of these images is central in the daily work of parenting.
Robert Naseef, Ph.D. is a nationally recognized psychologist specializing in families of children with special needs. He is the author of the highly regarded "Special Children, Challenged Parents: The Struggles and Rewards of Raising a Child With a Disability" (2001, Brookes Publishing). An amazing book!.......2004-11-01
If you have any doubts about buying this book, this review is written for you. I read this book in about 1 hour the first time and have read it about four more times since. I loved it! It's truly one of a kind and extremely enlightening. As a new mother, you are overwhelmed with so many thoughts and feelings and this book helps you feel normal and helps you understand yourself in a new way...as a mother!
Insightful.......2003-01-24
This book offers much valuable information about what goes on emotionally when your expecting a child, and once you've become a mom. It helps you to understand many of the "why's" about what you may be feeling or thinking. While most books offer information on pregnancy, labor and delivery, they leave a very important subject untouched...the psychological and emotional side of it all. This book is all about that and definitely worth reading.
Warm and Informative.......2001-01-10
Although written by a man, this book seems to grab the psychology of a pregnant woman quite successfully. The writer asks the accurate questions and enlightens the reader with the detailed and satisfactory answers. This is not a text book though, it is like a complete novel of the journey of becoming a mother. Highly recommended...
A chef d'oeuvre..........1998-07-24
I bought the book today and I finished it. Sterns did a great job. They explained a highly complex developmental theory very simply for everyone who want to learn something on motherhood. I am psychologist who has been interested in their theory in a very sophisticated way for a very long time but I felt that I learned a lot while reading the book. Everyone should read this 'tour de force' to understand themselves, their mothers, their chilhood, their motherhood and also their 'fatherhood'. Congratulations Nadia and Dan !

This is such a great book. No matter what you want to cook, Helen has a recipe for it. All of the recipes are so good.
I will pass this book on to my children.

Helen Corbitt's ZODIAC ROOM at Neiman-Marcus.......2001-03-24
The Zodiac Room, at the top of the legendary Neiman-Marcus Department store, in downtown Dallas was my first real exposure to how wonderful food could be...my Mom was an excellent Texas cook, my Texan grandmothers were wonderful cooks as well. Their repertoire was traditional Texas fare...chili con carne, chicken fried steak with cream gravy, cream pies, fried okra, cheese enchiladas and so on...and I loved their food. I grew up in West Texas surrounded by amazing, delicious food.
But the first time I ate Helen Corbitt's Guinea Hen Madeira, her Crabmeat Chantilly, her Poppy Seed Dressing, my life changed. Her food at the Zodiac Room was amazing...it changed my life.
For the last twenty years I have cooked for a living and Helen Corbitt remains my primary inspiration.
I am so thrilled to see Helen Corbitt's recipes back in print. I place her in the late 20th century Cooks Pantheon next to James Beard, Julia Child, Adelle Davis and Martha Stewart.
Stewart Wise
the grande dame of texas cuisine.......2001-03-12
This cookbook reintroduces Helen Corbitt, though if you have lived in Texas for years you are no doubt familiar with her. She became famous as the head of the restaurants of Neiman-Marcus department stores, and many Texans know her through her texas "caviar", hot fudge pecan balls, retro molded salads, fabulous "potluck" recipes, poppy seed dressing, and other Texas favorites. If you cannot find the original editions, this is certainly one to own. You will find yourself using it over and over again.
Over 500 favorites from earlier Corbitt cookbooks.......2001-02-24
Fans of Helen Corbitt have described her as the 'best cook in Texas', catering to the White House and others - this provides a new Helen Corbitt cookbook gathering over 500 favorites from earlier Corbitt cookbooks and including some never published recipes. No photos but the simple dishes don't need them.
Helen Corbitt Revisited.......2000-09-04
The book is a revamped version of Helen Corbitt's previous cookbooks, all of which I own. I was, however, disappointed that it did not contain more of her unpublished recipes. The chapter on Helen Corbitt's life will certainly be of interest to many people. I am a registered dietitian in Texas and actually met the fascinating Miss Corbitt. Her fabulous recipes for Sugar Cookies and the Flower Pots are included in this cookbook, so it must be more than an okay book!! These are two recipes that I constantly use. They are delicious and are always a hit!! Patty Vineyard MacDonald brought Helen Corbitt's recipes up-to-date by including oven temperatures and other information which was sometimes excluded. This is a great cookbook, especially to introduce the present generation of cooks to Helen's recipes, as well as to let the older generation relive her great artwork.

Very funny and informative!.......2007-07-04
I purchased this book for my husband who read it from cover-to-cover in 2 days. He really enjoyed the humor, as well as the information provided. When he finished it, I picked it up to see what all of the laughing was about. I couldn't help but laugh my way through it also.. very enjoyable and a quick read. I have a newly found sympathy for my husband who has been wonderful putting up with pregnant me. I would highly recommend this book for dads-to-be who are looking for something a little more focused on what they (the dads) are through with their wives.
Helpful, and quite funny, too........2005-08-06
What surprised me most was Richardson's terrific sense of humor. Some of the book is just hilarious, for example, his description of a newborn (for the inexperienced) as a "hairy coneheaded alien." For me personally, humor eases anxiety and tension, and it's as valuable as Richardson's hard-won practical advice.
Should be titled "Advice for future fathers".......2002-05-05
Being a new dad, I was looking for a book which would give me tips with my newborn son. Based upon the reviews, "Daddy Smarts" sounded like the perfect book. Unfortunately I was extremely disappointed that the vast majority of the book was dedicated to pre-birth topics such as "naming your baby", "getting ready for labor day", "How is my baby developing in the womb".
There are 29 chapters in the book and 24 of them were dedicated to before the baby was born. Ch. 25 is titled "Going Home (from the hospital)". I was expecting a little more of this book to be dedicated to advice for fathers for their first year.
The most useful book for new dads.......2002-03-30
Of the four books I bought, this was the most informative for new dads.
Reads like an Instruction Manual.......2001-06-21
and therefore, my husband loved it! I would never have gotten him to read one of my "baby books" since they reiterate a point several times, but he realy enjoyed this! It's funny, to the point, interesting, and helpful. The author goes over the basics of pregnancy, hospitals, and baby care from an involved dad's perspective. I highly reccommend it!

His real name is Riley B. King, but the B.B. stands, as any aficionado knows, for Blues Boy, a nickname he was given in the late 1940s when he was a disk jockey in Memphis, Tenn. Of course, he's best known as the King of the Blues to millions of fans throughout the world. At 70, B.B. King is still singing the blues and this is his story, from his childhood growing up in the Mississippi Delta, to the purchase of his first guitar at age 12, from his first real break after his appearance on Sonny Boy Williamson's King Biscuit Time radio show, to his ascent to international acclaim as America's ambassador of the blues.
Book Description
From the rural poverty of the Mississippi Delta to his celebrated position as the world's leading blues musician, B. B. King has led a remarkable life. In this riveting autobiography, he dramatizes his whirlwind adventures from the Memphis of the forties to the Moscow of the nineties with unflinching candor and sincerity--disclosing his complex relationships with women and chronicling his experience with racism, the Civil Rights movement, and the shifting politics of show business. But most of all, B. B. 's story is the story of the blues--the evolution from country acoustic to urban electric; the birth and explosion of rock 'n' roll--and B. B.' s own long but ultimately triumphant struggle for crossover success, during which he remained unwaveringly true to the music of his heart. From the rural poverty of the Mississippi Delta to his celebrated position as the world's leading blues musician, B. BLUES ALL AROUND ME: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF B.B.KING.......2007-03-20
THERE ARE MANY BLUES SINGERS FROM ROBERT JOHNSON TO THE PRESENT, BUT THERE IS ONLY ONE THEY CALLED "THE KING OF THE BLUES" THIS MAN IS A LEGEND HE IS CALLED B.B.KING. THIS POWERFUL BOOK GOES INTO THE HUMBLE BEGINNING OF RILEY B. KING AS A SHARECROPPER,THROUGH THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT,RACISM TO PERFECTING THE MUSIC THAT IS HIS FIRST LOVE "THE BLUES" .HERE IS A MAN WHO CAME FROM A SIMPLE HUMBLE BEGINNING TO PERFORMING BEFORE KINGS AND QUEENS AND PRESIDENTS AND EVEN THE POPE. IF YOU HAVE SEEN B.B.KING YOU KNOW WHY HE IS CALLED THE KING OF THE BLUES, IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN HIM YOU ARE MISSING OUT ON "THE MAN" HIMSELF ALL YOU CAN DO IS READ THIS POWERFUL BOOK
read the book several times.......2005-09-06
I've read BB's book several times, maybe 5 or 6. Every time I read it I still love it. I learn something new about him every time. If you even consider yourself a fan of BB or the blues, you have to read this book. David Ritz is an awesome co-writer, keeping BB's voice in the forefront, and he just gently guides BB. He did a hell of a job with Etta James' autobiography also.
An excellent book!!
A MAN AND HIS BLUES... the great BB KING..........2004-11-03
His real name is Riley B. King, the B.B. stands for Blues Boy, and he is known as "America's ambassador of the blues". A recommended enjoyable, good read about growing up and into music, self-taught guitar, remarkable attitudes of a man who faced prejudice and hate with an even keel. A performer who went on stage even when he was suffering from a bad case of flu. B.B. King took his music to Israel, England, and Russia, and held up in stature through the lows and highs. And he loves his 'Lucille' (guitar)! David Ritz has co-authored with the King a wonderful synopsis of love, fortitude, belonging, and enthusiasm. Recommended for blues lovers or otherwise... please don't miss this splendid read. (Review based on hardcover 1996)

A blues story.......2003-05-27
A blues story
B.B. King's life is presented here in a breezy, happy go lucky style. Ostensibly an autobiography, (although if you heard any of B.B.'s interviews about the book and his amazement at some of the details that were revealed, you know David Ritz did much more than help out.) this book deals with B.B.'s childhood of amazing poverty and his eventual rise to be the "King of the Blues." Conversational in style, but revealing in detail, BLUES ALL AROUND ME works as both a personal reminiscence and as a look at the life of a black man living in America during the 20th century. Tales of racism (in the military and elsewhere), the difficulties of dealing with a less than honest music industry, and the struggle for success against these odds are all expressed in a manner that shows no true anger, rather an acceptance that these were challenges to overcome. B.B.'s personal relationships with the many women in his life is not avoided, nor his opinions of many of his contemporaries. While the selected discography is extremely disappointing, this book should be required reading for any fan of the blues, and while any autobiography has to be taken with a grain of salt, this one definitely rings true.
To really get to know the Beale Street Blues Boy..........2003-02-20
Wow, I just finished reading this biography and am truly satisfied with my reading. It's been a long time since I read a book this refreshing. Talk about honesty, passion and heart.
The last 3 chapters were especially entertaining, talking from the heart about issues generally left untouched. From page one, I couldn't put the book down.
This book really helps you understand B.B's live performances. For anyone who as seen B.B. King live sometimes gets the feeling that his performance is a routine that dates back 25 years (well, I now know it is!), but this fact doesn't bother my anymore, understanding where the man comes from, better understanding his way of doing things.
Recommended for blues fans and anyone interested in a very entertaining read.

Il Duce's Other Woman.......2001-02-04
Two words aptly describe this work - "boring" and "slanted." The authors have chosen to write a biography of a relatively obscure person from history, Margherita Sarfatti who was a prominent art critic in Italy during the 20's and 30's and who also happened to be one of Benito Mussolini's many mistresses. All other biographies of Italy's Il Duce barely devote a sentence or two to Sarfatti but this one paints her as the mastermind behind Mussolini's creation of fascism and his rise to power. Unfortunately, the documentation provided to support this thesis is virtually nonexistant. Mussolini is portrayed as a pure brute with no mind of his own, hell-bent on the aquistion of power and the elimination of civil liberties. No mention is made of the score of public works that Italian fascism enacted and that resulted in the substantial increase of pre-war Italian standard of living. Instead, an inordinate and excessive amount of pages are devoted to Sarfatti's relationship to the futurist painters of early 20th century Italy. What is not apparent is the reason for selecting Sarfatti as the protagonist of this book. Perhaps the authors find irony in her Jewish ancestry and Mussolini's later anti-semitic laws once the Axis with Germany was formed. I wound recommend this book only for those interested in the history of 20th century Italian artists. Those interested in an accurate and objective account of the socio-political factors leading up to and involving Fascist Italy are advised to look elsewhere.
