An excellent book for anyone interested in using solar power. It's especially useful for anyone planning to build a new house. But anyone wanting the basics of solar (passive) heating and solar electricity will benefit.

Paul gives an honest step-by-step account of his own building experiences, including the mistakes and what it took to correct them. I found the entire story very worthwhile and useful.

If you want a solid overview of how to prep any house for alternative electrical power, you should read this book. If you're looking for practical info in the best use of passive solar heating, you can't beat this book.

Found this book very interesting and easy to read. The book shows the 'human' side of this technology and the enduring spirit of a man who wanted to live independant of the utilities. A man who dared to live the simplier life and enjoyed the hard work to get there.

In my quest to utilize this techology, I was delighted to encounter a volume that felt like it emerged from personal experience and not simply a rote tech survey. While I am not a particularly technical person, I found the information and presentation clear and direct. There is an undercurrent of personal charm I found engaging and added to my a sence of confidence in being able to do this. My wife and I are delighted with the results of what we learned and applied based on Mr Fowlers' book. Our second home in the woods was enhanced for it.

As a Biologist, I have been looking for a book that would give a clear and concise introduction to solar energy and photovoltaics. Paul Fowler's book does just that. It is written for the person who has an interest in solar power, but who does not have the technical background to immediately delve into more detailed texts. It's story format is engaging, yet also very informative. I highly recommend this book.

This book is excellent preparation for anyone who is expecting a child. There is practical help for challenges parents face in managing common child behavior problems, such as getting toddlers to sleep and reducing temper tantrums, but the main advantage of this book is that it also teaches parents how to prevent common problems from developing in the first place. It is a must read for prospective parents, especially first-timers.

I've recently been reading parenting books, trying to find good ones to recommend to my patients (I'm a child psychologist). This is easily one of the most comprehensive, well written, and useful books I have come across so far. A very useful guide for parents with or without difficult children.

A must read for all parents. This parenting book encourages you to get on the "ten year plan." No, this is not a financial or business plan but a way to learn how to play with your child, to go into public with your son, and to develop language skills by talking to your daughter.

The skills taught in "Parenting that Works" will assist you with teaching your child now, what most parents hope to see in their adolescents in 10 years. Christophersen and Mortweet suggest that these skills must be practiced and taught over time, typically 3 months, before they become a part of your parenting style and part of your daughter?s behavior.

This is an excellent book that is easy to read and understand. The examples described by the authors resonate with what parents experience. With practice, patience, and your support; your son will be able to develop the ability to play independently, manage his moods and "self-quiet," and respond appropriately to requests and expectations. These concepts are explained well, are clear and easy to implement, but do take time and energy to practice and get good at!

Another great parenting book by Christophersen and Mortweet. These skills can be used with young children and adolescents.

Easy to follow advice for raising nicer kids.......2002-08-26

I saw Dr. Christophersen in a New York Times article about how to teach kids to handle their anger, so I looked to see if he had any books out on the subject. I was very happy to see this book of his! Even better, Dr. Christophersen tackles problems like kids that interrupt too much, as well as divorce. The book -- which is really all about how to raise nice kids -- is easy to understand, and the advice is easy to follow. Dr. Christophersen doesn't believe in punishing a child who gets angry -- because kids learn from their parents. Who hasn't slammed the door when they're mad? Well, if my son is watching that display of temper -- or worse -- I'm teaching him to do what I do when I get mad -- throw a temper tantrum! Look on any highway, and you can see all kinds of temper tantrums -- it's called road rage, but it's just an adult form of temper tantrums. In this book, Dr. Christophersen explains how what we do teaches our kids what to do. If WE learn ways of controlling our temper, such as breathing deeply when WE get mad, we can help our kids to the same. Another good part is about talking with our kids. We all lecture kids -- even when they're too young to understand. Instead, he says, we should listen to our kids and answer their questions. What a fantastic way to get through to a child. If he asks questions, I've got his attention, and he's going to listen to me! The other thing I really like about this book is that it has the backing of the American Psychological Association, which means I can trust Dr. Christophersen's advice -- he's not the child expert "flavor of the week."

My Favorite Cookbook!.......2005-04-13

There are not enough complimentary words that I know to describe this book. The authors have done a tremendous job of combining a few simple ingredients into what consistantly amounts to great recipes. I love the grilling marinades, breakfasts, picnic fare, and comfort stews. I can honestly say that I have never been dissapointed with anything from this book...ever.

An excellent book for those cooking on boats and ...........2001-08-31

If youýre cooking in a cramped space (boat, travel trailer, mountain cabin or tiny kitchen) and you do not have the time, skills or inclinations [like some people] and want flexibility with menus: buy this book. Thompson & Wheeler have mastered the above and done us all a favor in passing on both their recipes and tips. You can ýcreate a gracious meal with a minimum of fussý using Feasts Afloat. Not only are the menus creative and good, they are fast and I use them daily when I am on the run.

The recipes lend themselves to quick preparation. The ýGrilled Ginger Chickený is a must try and the ýFresh Lime Pieý was quick and great tasting. Ten Speed Press has done an great job in printing the color photos. This book has so many beautiful photos that it verges on the edge of being a ýcoffee tableý book, rather than a cookbook. Scores of photos illustrate in vivid color what the finished dish looks like and there are great sailing shots too. The side bars have helpful hints. The cover is made of a strong treated (water resistant) covering.

This is an excellent book for those cooking on boats, and a very good book for those cooking in small kitchen spaces. Recommended 4 1/2stars

Terrific Cookbook.......2000-10-17

I have used this book for years as the "Yachting Cookbook" and been one of those who tried to locate additional copies through out-of-print searches and in obscure coastal bookstores so I could give it to friends. I was delighted to find it republished. It is a marvelous book filled with delicious ideas for meals that are uncomplicated masterpieces. My husband likes to tell people that he "single-handed" our 49' sailboat around Vancouver Island with a "splendid cook". The credit for the meals goes to this book. Incidently, if you read Wm Buckley's "Racing Through Paradise", Liz Wheeler was the cook on that voyage and many recipes that are praised in that book are included "Feasts Afloat"

Not Just For Boaters.......2000-06-28

Owning both a sailboat and motorhome, my mother who is a terrible cook (something a son should never admit) recommended Feasts Afoat. I found this book very helpful for both on the water and on the road. Most of the recipes used 6 or less ingredients and required minimal storage. Cooking is one of my hobbies, I would rate this book gourmet quality.

Almost too realistic, yet a must read. .......2007-03-20

I heard this book was good, but didn't know how good it actually was until I read it. There isn't a dull page.

What's most alarming about the book is not necessarily the events that take place, as many movies about this lifestyle have been made since the book's first publishing, sort of numbing the harsh realities of gang life to even outsiders who grew up in secluded suburbs, but the age that Luis Rodriguez actually is when the events are taking place. Some of the day to day drama described in the book is so adult like that you can only picture the subjects of these tales being 18 to 25 years old, yet the reader is often reminded that the author was as young as 14 when some of them took place.

What may also separate the stories told in this book from the stories told in typical 1990s west coast gang folklore, from hip hop to film to books like 'Monster', is the sexual situations Mr. Rodriguez describes that he took part in and witnesses, again, in some cases as young as 14. Some are romantic, and almost remind the reader of a time when romance was first discovered in their lives, yet there are some that are so disturbing that the reader is quickly brought down to earth, reminded that love and romance in a violent, drug infested environment is far different from the kind most Americans have grown to know, that is dictated by Hollywood fairy tales.

Luis Rodriguez finding his outlet from the gang life through art and writing could give hope to any current gang member who happens upon this book. It's one thing for a suburban high school teacher to tell a 'homeboy' that he can express his views through art, it's another for an older 'homeboy' himself to tell him.

A must read for everyone, from suburbanites with little knowledge of the gang life who would like another version than that given by media outlets and law enforcement agencies, where the knowledge tends to be limited to crime reporting and identification of territories and monikers, to kids and adults wrapped up in the gang life, and just looking for any story that can inspire them or give them some kind of direction to a better life.

The Definitive Account of Barrio Life........2007-02-19

What more is needed to say about this memoir? This is singlehandedly one of the most powerful memoirs I have ever read and that goes without saying. I was born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley, the same one that Rodriguez builds and describes and I can honestly say he is completely spot on. About? Everything. The racial, identity, and sexual struggle that Rodriguez weaves in this story is compelling and really grabbed me and immersed me into his life. This memoir says what there is to be said, and it says a lot.

We believe that every teen should be given the opportunity to read Always Running. Luis J. Rodriguez grew up in East L.A in the 60's and 70's. This book is his life story describing all the situations he went thru as a cholo; the sex, drugs, violence, and parties. His style of writing is hypnotizing due to the vivid descriptions that create an amazing picture in your mind. As a result, you won't want to put the book down. However, readers beware; Always Running contains graphic descriptions that some readers may find as inappropriate.

This book was excellent! I read it in just a couple of days. Since I first started I couldn't take my eyes of what I was reading. The story is shocking and rude, yet interesting and mind-opening. It explicitly tells the struggles of growing up in a foreign country with everything against you and yet find the way to a new world full of possibilities. Excellent for tenagers, parents, and students.

Too small to be worth much..........2006-04-25

It is hard to understand why this miniature version of Ortberg's highly acclaimed book was ever published. Though it is clearly indicated as miniature, it is hard to imagine just how small this book is until you are actually trying to read it. The book is literally smaller than the palm of my hand. This makes for the most tedious process of trying to read it, as the pages and font are correspondingly tiny.

More frustrating than the ridiculous logistics of this book, however, is the fact that it results in the loss of most of the content of the original. Knowing that the book had been miniaturized, I anticipated that it would probably be tedious and cumbersome to read. I never imagined that it would be so small that it would be essentially reduced to a handful of bullet points, rather than meaningful prose in Ortberg's typical style.

I gave this book 2 stars because Ortberg's ideas about spiritual disciplines are worth considering, even in such an abbreviated format. However, I would suggest that any potential reader would be well-served to purchase the regular version of this book and read it instead, as I plan to do soon.

Didn't realize it was a miniature book.......2005-09-19

My own fault, but I didn't realize it was a miniature book that I ordered. I ended up having to purchase the full sized book in addition to the miniature one because I needed the full version for a study group.

VERY DECEIVING!.......2005-01-16

I am very angry over this purchase. I have purchased used books many times on Amazon and have always gotten a good deal. This was NOT at all what we wanted. Our study group starts this book in 3 days and I purchased it thinking it was the big book/ the original full-sized text. Now I've spent $3.00 plus $3.00 shipping on top of that for a book as big as my hand!! We'll have to go out today and purchase the full-sized book at a regular book store so that we'll be ready for our group. We are on a very tight budget and this was a very disappointing purchase. I just hope no one else makes this mistake.

The book by John Ortberg is an excellent, humorous, thought-provoking call to discipleship. I strongly recommend the book. Just be certain that you buy the actual FULL SIZED version of it, not this TINY and very difficult to read version which I purchased by mistake. When a book "deal" looks too good to be true (price-wise), check into it. It probably is....
Buy the original full-sized edition, not this one.
I hope that Amazon will make it much more clear that this version for $4 is NOT the standard full-sized edition.

I can't believe how RARE this edition is!.......2007-09-18

My daughter Holly asked me to list a few books that she had on [...]. When I went to list this book I was amazed to discover that this specific printing was not available at all. I presume that the cover illustration by Julie Scott has caused some sort of controversy -- a cartoonish caricature of a Latino with angel wings, striking a pose with doubled fisticuffs, and one raised eye that is cautiously peering over a shoulder. Did I mention the "black" tatoo of a cross on his right bicep (we all know the origin of "black" tatoos, don't we!) You may have to look high and low for another copy of this edition. Or look no further and get this sole (or should I say "solomente"?) offering.

Some people had strong religious backgrounds, while others had little exposure to organized religion. A couple had abusive childhoods. There are stories of an African-American woman and a Japanese-American woman who convert.

One thing I really liked about this book is that the author had something positive to say about each convert. She also presented the process as a period of study of Judaism, rather than a demand for immediate conversion. One of the women described here may never convert because of her difficulty giving up the belief in the divinity of Jesus. Interestingly enough, marrying converts caused some of the born Jews to become more religious and a couple chose Orthodoxy.

This book is great for anyone interested in becoming a Jew-by-Choice.

fast moving stories of faith.......2000-10-30

The book is very fast moving with personal testament from people who converted to Judaism. Some of these people wanted to create a more spiritual environment for the spouse and future family. Some never found meaning in their own religion. I think that the interesting part is that the stories are so personal and real. It's possible to relate.
