Book Description

Topselling author Harriet Lerner is at her provocative best in this well–received examination of fear, anxiety, and shame, the three key emotions that she believes cause all unhappiness.

Using her wonderfully rich and inviting therapeutic voice, along with personal memories and examples drawn from her practice, Lerner gives fear and its accompanying negative emotions, anxiety and shame, their due.

Anxiety, fear and shame can wash over us like a tidal wave or operate as a silent thrum under the surface of our daily lives. With stories that are sometimes hilarious and sometimes heart–breaking, Lerner takes us from 'fear–lite' and mild anxiety to deep dread, shame and terror.

No–one signs up for anxiety, fear and shame, but we can't avoid them, either. The more we can look these emotions in the eye, with patience and curiosity, and the more we learn to spot their wisdom and mischief, the less grip they have on us. As we learn to respond to the three key emotions in new ways, we can live more fully in the present and move into the future with courage, clarity, humour and hope.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars good solid Harriet Lerner.......2007-06-14

I read this book after having read The Dance of Intimacy several months ago. The Dance of Intimacy was like a huge wake-up call for me, whereas this book was very interesting and helpful, just not as earth-shattering. I am generally an anxious person, and I did learn a little bit about living with my anxiety and not making it worse. But I didn't connect with all the stories the way I did with the previous Lerner book I read. I still think Harriet Lerner is an amazing insightful woman. I'm glad that I read and bought this book, but maybe my expectations were a little too high. I would give the book 3 1/2 stars if I could.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-01-29

Great book and good way to understand how to manage your anxieties and fears. This book will not make your fears go away, but rather enable you to work with them. A pratical approach.

5 out of 5 stars Fear not the fear.......2006-12-31

A wonderfully written and highly applicable book that highlights the importance of tuning into fear, anxiety, and shame for the underlying wisdom and guidance they provide, instead of simply seeing them as unbearable emotions to avoid at all costs. This book is bound to be helpful for anyone whose fear and anxiety make them prisoners of their home, workplace, and inner thoughts.

5 out of 5 stars awesome book.......2006-11-01

Anxiety, panice attack and depression, these are all clinical problems that sometimes need medication, but you can't get a complete cure unless you remove the sourse of them. You need to increase your wisdom to better see the problem. I found this book amazing in this job. You can feel the ocean of wisdom in her words.

5 out of 5 stars look at your shadows.......2006-01-02

Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE DANCE OF FEAR as book about the tangled tango of life with people -- sometimes you lead & sometimes you follow, & if you know what makes you tick, who's doing what isn't nearly as important as who's in charge of you, & that talking it out is the one thing that really helps.

Dr. Lerner doesn't write trite self-help hand books, the questions she asks & the answers people give her set the scene for her articulate insights. Take time to read THE DANCE OF FEAR because it's about what these emotions are, how we behave because of them, what harm happens when we don't know what's driving us, & how we react to events, great & small, that have us frozen in the headlights or hiding away from life.

    Book Description

"Personal Best, Chasing the Wind Above and Below the Equator" is more than a sailing adventure. It's the story of one man's drive to realize his dream. Never being satisfied with the ordinary Ed, he drops in and out of an engineering career to be a farmer in the mountains of North Carolina. After several years he re-enters the corporate world and has a rich and rewarding career with a major U.S. corporation. Always, he strives to do "his personal best." Finally it's time for his dream to be realized. He and his wife will sail around the world. Sail with them as they experience the wonders, triumphs, and difficulties of living their dream. Storms, breakdowns, personal loss, and a miraculous escape from drowning in the 2004 Tsunami in Thailand serve as the backdrop to seeing the wonders of the world and meeting the people who are a part of it.

AUTHOR BIO: Edward Muesch was born in New Jersey and spent his childhood years growing up in Phoenix, Arizona. Ed's background in mechanical engineering led to a successful career as a Director of Engineering for a major U.S. corporation. His technical papers and sailing articles have appeared in several publications and he has appeared on several talk shows. Ed took early retirement in 2001 to fulfill his lifelong dream of sailing around the world. Ed and his wife, Helen, live on their Hans Christian ketch, presently in the Mediterranean and have a flat in Margarita, Venezuela.

5 out of 5 stars Love of flight makes for reluctant heroes.......2004-04-12

I touching story about how regular individuals, because of their situation, find themselves undertaking extraordinary feats. Carrying out otherwise unthinkable acts of heroism, not because of their love of war, but perhaps just the opposite; their bonds of loyalty and friendship, and the impossible hope that they might all live through the horror that is war.
I would suggest this book to anybody interested in the topics of: aviation, history, warfare, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Good For Diabetics.......2007-08-23

This is a good book of recipes for the diabetic. They will be profitable for your consumption!

                    4 out of 5 stars Good choice.......2007-08-15

I bought this book because my daughter is a diabetic & I was looking for new recipes to try in the slow cooker. I've only tried 4 recipes so far
                    & they were all good.

                    5 out of 5 stars GREAT COOKBOOK!.......2007-07-23

I haven't yet tried any of the recipes, but I look forward to doing so. There are so many I want to try...family friendly recipes which will be so great for our weekly family nights. I love the convenience of the slow cooker, but as a diabetic with a heart problem, I was looking for a cookbook which would enable me to feed the family but still be safe for me. I've found it! No one will even suspect that they are eating "my kind of food."

1 out of 5 stars Diabetic Cooks or Diabetic Consumer?.......2007-07-12

This book has varied recipes but to call it a diabetic cookbook is misleading. The majority of recipes would not pass muster for low GI meals within a diabetic's range. Perhaps it is a cookbook for people who are diabetic to cook for those who are not!

                    5 out of 5 stars Don't feel like cooking?.......2007-03-31

Great for diabetics and others, this book tells you how to use your slow cooker so you can prepare healthy, delicious meals even when you don't really feel like cooking.

I bought this book along with Charlie Papazian's third edition of "Complete Joy of Homebrewing." These two books have taught me everything I needed to know to make outstanding beer the first time. My experience was with a standard Pale Ale recipe. With the instruction and advice in this book, the beer was outstanding. he book covers all aspects of beginning homebrewing, including equipment needed, the essential science behind homebrewing, ingredients and a no-nonsense approach to brewing your first batch. I especially appreciated that Chapter 1 was dedicated to the person that wanted to brew his/her own beer immediately. It takes you through the process and then expounds on the process in the following chapters. If you just wanted to brew a batch of beer, Chapter 1 will get you there. If you want to understand the brewing process and why things are done the way they are, read the rest of the book. I feel as I've gained years of homebrewing knowledge by purchasing this book and assimilating the wisdom and experience contained within.

5 out of 5 stars How To Brew.......2007-09-01

I'm a home brewer. I own Charlie Papazian's book, "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing," third edition. I have read Mr. Papazian's book from cover to cover. However, as a brewer, you are always searching for more, much more. You are always asking yourself, "How can I can I make this beer better?" Well, "How to Brew" is your answer. Read Mr. Palmers book. Absorb it. Highlight it. Sleep with it under your pillow. EVERY question is answered. Mr. Palmer holds your hand and takes you step by step through the brewing process. Once the basics are learned, you are then taught the "how's and why's." If it's not in this book...you don't need to know it. Remember the book, "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex?" Well, THIS is the same, only..."EVERYTHING You Always Wanted To Know About Brewing GREAT Beer." Just buy the book, you'll then understand what I'm talking about!!!
Wishing you all a cold pilsner.

this is an excellent book both for the beginning brewer and more advanced brewer lots of important technical stuff for the advanced brewer. You really can brew right the first time if you read even some of the first chapters in this book!

3 out of 5 stars Ok, but nothing special.......2007-05-14

This book has the same information of nearly every other beginning book. I had hoped it might have a little extra, but it is VERY basic. A disappointment. I can recommend it for someone just beginning, but even then, I prefer Joy of Homebrewing. This one just didn't have the same fun tone, and also didn't have anything new or updated. I returned it.

5 out of 5 stars The Book to Get to Start Homebrewing.......2007-04-24

It's up to date, well organized, has good photographs, and is filled with useful information for beginners and more detailed data for those wanting more. I also read Charlie Papazian's book first, but now, on my fourth batch, and still trying to learn as much as possible as quickly as possible, I find myself referring to Palmer constantly and Papazian almost never.

                      Book Description

Most ceramists own a pugmill or hand extruder and view it as simply a utilitarian device for making handles or coils. But the extruder can be the starting point for a variety of inventive and creative works of art. Extruder experts Tom and Jean Latka teach the basics of extruder use as well as how to make your own dies. Step-by-step projects include napkin rings, vases, umbrella stands, wine coolers, planters, sconce lighting, platters, sculpture, and more.

                      - 12 projects with step-by-step instructions
                      - Photo gallery of works by skilled, creative, and talented artists
                      - Solid and hollow extrusions
                      - Additive or subtractive methods of construction for pottery and sculpture

If you have been waiting for the best book on ceramic extrusion, it is
available now Ceramic Extruding by Jean and Tom Latka successfully answers the question of, "Why are all of those clay extruders rusting on potter's walls?" Their answer is thus: Ceramists, like everyone else, have to be inspired to create beautiful work. This book acts as a magical muse for artists by showing over 300 quality photos of beautiful work by some of the finest international contemporary artists working in the medium today. This book's focus is on the recent emergence of extruded ceramic art as dynamic and surprisingly varied form of creative expression.

"Though the words extrude and extrusion are not ones most people encounter in everyday conversation, we live in a world where we are surrounded by extruded objects. Our brick houses and their tile roofs are made from extruded clay. We shower on extruded tiles, send our smoke and fumes up extruded chimneys and our waste down extruded sewers. From the round O's in your breakfast cereal to the pasta on your dinner plate, extruded objects occupy every conceivable nook and cranny of our lives". Beginning with bricks, Ceramic Extruding details the history of the extruder then demonstrates the ease, as well as the necessity, of using an extruder in one's pottery. The book is organized in a logical manner in order to guide the reader by employing numerous step-by-step instructional methods.
Essentially, Ceramic Extruding is a how-to book and the projects gradually become more advanced. Apart from the photos, another subject that distinguishes this book from other books on the market is its comprehensive theory of extrusion and was the only chapter I had to read twice. It is a difficult subject. The authors give detailed information on why extruders act in the manner in which they do. For instance, I didn't know that clay moves faster down the center of the barrel than clay closer to the walls. This information is useful for artists who want to design their own dies.

Educators take note: As a teacher, I know how it feels to give students a
blank canvas and ask them to be creative. In contrast Ceramic Extruding
shows how to create a limitless supply of foundation material from the
                      extruder for the student.

The book truly has an international cast of artists, photos of ceramics
spanning from Australia to Inge Pedersen in Norway. I became aware of
several renowned European ceramicists. Antonio Cumella, Alessio Tasca, Elina
Brandt-Hanson, Jim Robison. Other artist's work that impressed me was Ken Williams, Jutta Golas, and Jack Sures. Jean and Tom Latka have an excellent body of work apart from each other, but their collaborative work shines superior.

Everyone has been waiting for the next thing in clay. Well Latka's Flying
Hybrid Extruder and Michael Sherrill's novel extruder/wheel could lead to
the new revolution in clay. The quick release system makes these extruders user friendly. The expansion box is larger than most other machines, and in the case of Flying Hybrid, it out performs slab machines by making slabs faster and more superior. Oddly enough, slab machines compress the clay from the center of the roller to the edges. This creates an unstable molecular structure and cracks result. The clay is evenly compressed in the Vertical Flying Hybrid. An 18"x24" slab is the result when an 8" cylindrical shape 18" long is extruded and sliced lengthwise.

I would like to sum up with a quote from Michael Cohen. "It is important to find a well-made extruder that is adaptable to your needs. As for the
wheel, once you learn how to use it, one question ultimately remains: What are you going to make? After mastering centrifugal force and friction, perhaps it's now time to use gravity and inertia to make a personal statement. Like throwing, it only looks easy."

"Extruding clay takes on a wonderful new meaning when you use the extruder as you would any tool---as one step in the making process, not as an end in itself. The extruder's contribution to the studio can be as profound and influential as the potters wheel --- a slab for the imagination to leap off from". Jean Latka

Two thumbs up! Burn the other extruder books; this is the only one you will ever need.
I am an college art teacher at U.S.C. and find it the best book for my introduction course on the Extruder.

                                        Book Description

Life with a child with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be tough, but take it from one who's been there: It can also be full of all the love, humor, and light that a parent might hope for. In this gentle, lighthearted, down-to-earth book, David Spohn uses his own experiences to help others make it through the stresses and chaos and heartbreak that raising a child with ADD/ADHD can entail-and to help them come through whole and happy and sane. From the new vocabulary and friends who come along with a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD, to questions touching on everything from Ritalin to sibling rivalry to schooling to going out in public, Life on the Edge offers honest, practical, caring support-and a healthy dose of good humor-for parents of children with ADD/ADHD.

Art director of Hazelden Information and Educational Services and the author and illustrator of four children's books, David Spohn is the father of a child with attention deficit disorder.

4 out of 5 stars It was nice to see that you can survive.......2002-01-06

This book gave an account of life living with a child who has been diagnosed with ADHD. It did tend to put things in perspective making me feel that I was not alone! Describing my child exactly. I would describe it as quite light hearted and witty and read it in less than an hour. It did not really give parenting advice or ideas on how to improve your child's situation. There are a lot of alternative remedies and approaches that are not mentioned.

                                        5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......1999-03-19

It's so nice to find a readable, helpful, humorous book that puts ADD in perspective. No jargon, no behavioral modification plans, but just plain good sense.

Jacqueline du Pré saw the outlines of her short, brilliant, and tragic life when she was still very young. The first time she heard a cello (she was 4 years old), she said, "Mummy, I want to make that sound." She got a cello for her 5th birthday and made her professional debut at age 16. She went on to become one of the century's most amazing musicians for 10 years. Then her career was ended by multiple sclerosis. She seems to have foreseen that crippling illness, which killed her at age 42 after years of slow deterioration. She was 9 years old when she confided in her sister, Hilary (who coauthored this biography with their brother, Piers), "Don't tell Mum, but... when I grow up, I won't be able to walk or move." Before she was stricken down, Jacqueline du Pré led a life of unusual richness and complexity. Here that life is examined by her siblings in loving but realistic terms, including the flaws and conflicts as well as the achievements.

The biography formed the basis for the 1998 film starring Emily Watson. It is a sad chronicle of the pitiless disease that twisted Jackie's personality and sanity as well as her body, but also a joyful book about music, the tenderness and rivalries of family life, and above all a singular, tormented, but buoyant personality. --Joe McLellan

From the moment Jacqueline du Pré first held a cello at the age of five, it was clear she had an extraordinary gift. At sixteen, when she made her professional debut, she was hailed as one of the world's most talented and exciting musicians. But ten years later, she stopped playing virtually overnight, when multiple sclerosis removed the feeling in her hands just before a concert. It took fourteen more years for the crippling disease to take its final toll.

In this uniquely revealing biography, Hilary and Piers du Pré have re-created the life they shared with their sister in astonishing personal detail, unveiling the private world behind the public face. With warmth and candor they recount Jackie's blissful love of the cello, her marriage to the conductor Daniel Barenboim, her compulsions, her suffering, and, above all, the price exacted by her talent on the whole family. For proud as they were of Jackie's enormous success, none of them was prepared for the profound impact her genius would have on each of their lives. . . .

4 out of 5 stars Families are complicated.......2005-07-15

Families are complicated - especially when one member is considered a genius and everything, whether rightly or not, comes to revolve around that person.

This book has been retitled "Hilary and Jackie" in the US to tie in with the movie release (it's a wonderful movie, BTW), but the original of "A Genius in the Family" is a much more suitable title as "H & J" gives a flase impression that it's the story of the two sisters, when really it is meant to be the story or what happens within a family under extraordinary circumstances.

Neither Hilary or Piers du Pre are brilliant writers, but the book is adequate in the literary sense - think of any decent family memoir written by non-professional writers and don't expect Pulitzer Prize material and you won't be disappointed.

Some reviewers have expressed annoyance at all the "cutesy" nicknames and such that the family has for each other. It's rather an English thing (think perhaps of A. A. Milne?), and well, every family has its quirks, so I personally do not find it annoying or cloying and more an indication of their affection for each other.

Others have expressed the view that this desecrates the memory of Jackie - but whose memory of Jackie? These are the memories that Hilary and Piers have of Jackie, their family, and how they coped with Jackie's needs, rise to fame, and subesequent decline with Multiple Sclerosis. Our memories are not always strictly the facts, they are often the impression that we want to have or some mix thereof. Whether or not you think that Hilary was rather mistaken in letting Kiffer (her husband) and Jackie sleep together, whether you think they all needed a good round of therapy...you must admit that Hilary and Piers do appear to have been honest with themselves and their remembrance of their family. Their biography may not match up with others', but this again is the nature of memory, and I don't think that anywhere in the book it is stated that this is a super-factual, dry history.

As for Hilary seeming jealous, I can sympathise very much with her. She was an extremely talented musician in her own right but always had the shadow of Jacqueline du Pre over her - and jealousy and resentment are a natural reaction to something like this. I do not get the impression that she is bitter and twisted because of it, but tried to make peace with herself and find joy in her own large family.

And Piers. Two great musicians for older sisters and family life that catered mainly for one and most of the rest for the other, and I'm not going to begrudge him the chance to tell the world that he's not just "the other du Pre child". His discovery of his love of piloting and finding spiritual fulfilment in professing Christianity sound perhaps a bit lame within this book, but hey, it's who he is and I still find it interesting as part of the family journey as a whole.

                                        1 out of 5 stars Unmitigated trash.......2004-02-28

Hilary is the sick one here. Jealousy is a green-eyed monster and she has desecrated the memory of her sister with this piece of you-know-what. And it's badly written besides.

                                        4 out of 5 stars very worthwhile.......2003-10-04

Before I get to the actual review, a couple of extra-literary complaints:

                                        1) This was originally called "A Genius in the Family". It makes no sense (other than business sense) to retitle it "Hilary and Jackie". It is no more about or by Hilary du Pre than it is by or about Piers du Pre. It is especially absurd to put photographs of ACTORS on the front and back cover.

                                        2) The amazon.com amateur "reviewers" who have abused this opportunity so as to hurl invective at Jackie or her family remind me of the strangers depicted in the book who send letters to Jackie and say such hurtful things as her conversion to Judaism is responsible for her multiple sclerosis. The authors are telling you what happened; they are not asking you to pass judgement. (For that matter, nonsensical psychobabble buzzwords such as "dysfunctional" and "enabler" should be expunged from the language.)

Ad rem: In the main, this a gripping and surprisingly well-written story, considering that neither of the authors are professional writers. Don't get that idea, however, that it is in any way comparable to something like Hemingway's "A Movable Feast"; it isn't nearly THAT well written. Hilary does a better job than Piers, lapsing into banality significantly less often. Piers is better at describing Jackie than his life apart from her. We never catch his supposed enthusiasm for flying. His stilted account of his religious awakening seems wholly gratuitous and artificial.

Considering that there is scarcely a whiff of didacticism in these pages, it is surprising that you end up learning so much of trenchant value about music, en passant, as it were.

4 out of 5 stars A moving and honest biography of a complex woman.......2003-07-24

"Hilary and Jackie" is a moving and honest, if somewhat ploddingly written, biography of a great cellist whose genius took over a family. Being a prodigy is not easy for anyone, nor is it easy for a family to have a member--even more than one member--who is ill. What I think is especially tragic is that Hilary too was gifted, and that got lost in both Jackie's pursuit of the cello and in Hilary being placed with the wrong flute teacher. One can only wonder what would have happened if Hilary had pursued her gifts in the way Jackie had.

What speaks so well for the book is that, despite all of Jackie's selfish behavior, she still comes across as a sympathetic person, as seen through the eyes of her brother and sister, especially her sister. While they pull no punches, they clearly love their talented sibling. And as we read about her, so do we. Sometimes, they come across like pushovers, especially Hilary, who needed to grow a backbone and tell her sister and husband no to their sexual shenanigans. But love and devotion can lead to strange things. Give the authors credit for being honest, and for researching MS and what it can do to people, without necessarily making excuses for Jackie.

4 out of 5 stars An intimate, insightful read!.......2003-02-16

This is the story of the musical genius Jackie Du Pre as told by her sister Hilary and brother Piers.

Young Jackie was enthralled by the sounds of a cello at the tender age of 4. At 5 under her mothers tutelage she began lessons. Shortly thereafter, her gift was realized. She played not technically perfect but with an overwhelming passion and depth that stunned the music world.

Her sister an accomplished musician in her own right was pushed to the side as the accolades went to Jackie.

Piers became a pilot and later a businessman to escape a muscial competition he knew he could not match.

Throughout the book the love for family comes through. The mother's joy in music and her care in sharing and teaching her skills to her family flows throughout the book.

Jackies development as a musician is swift and her sister Hilary realizes that despite her own talents Jackie has a gift that can't be matched.

As an individual who cannot play an instrument, it is fascinating to read of someone who is so gifted. To enter the exciting world of music and feel the passion even as a bystander is entrancing. Reading of how the different cello's required different care depending on their wood and strings and how each made its own unique sounds was an education in itself.

And the book swept me up not only musically but emotionally. Frankly I was shocked by the revelations from Hilary. At one point in the book, Jackie was emotionally weak and supposedly too distraught to be alone so she slept with Hilary and Hilary's husband Kiffer in the same bed.

In the next few chapters Hilary is upset to discover that her husband sleeps with Jackie on numerous occasions to keep her (Jackie) from plumeting into dispair. But Hilary is stoic realizing it was necessary for Jackies "mental health". Emotionally, I felt like slapping some sense into Hilary. Since when do you invite your sister to share the same bed as you and your husband and not expect some repercussions.

This self sacrificing behavior so that, "what Jackie wants, Jackie gets" is evident throughout the book.

Eventually Jackie is diagnosed with MS and begins verbally abusing those around her. Sadly she is unable to continue to perform.

The book is a hard to put down read and will touch many emotionally.

How do Christian and Jewish Americans recall their religious upbringing and how does it affect their adult lives? Growing Up Religious offers a fascinating portrait of how Americans think about, reflect on, recapture, and reproduce the religious experiences of their childhoods. Exploring personal stories gathered in interviews with more than two hundred people from a variety of ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds, Robert Wuthnow discovers that what brings adults back to religious life often has less to do with religious institutions than with the way family and other relations formed around religious practice: memories of mothers, fathers, and neighbors whose everyday acts were imbued with religious meaning. We read about people like Bruce Gallahue, whose relationship to religion changed as he went from growing up in a mainline Protestant home, where his image of God was based on fear and strict rules, to an adult struggle as a recovering alcoholic, when he was able to receive comfort by returning to Protestantism with a new vision of God as compassionate and forgiving

Robert Wuthnow is Gerald R. Andlinger Professor of Social Sciences and Director of the Center for the Study of American Religion at Princeton University, a well respected and published sociologist of religion with over ten books published. In this one he examines and compares how Jews and Christians experience spirituality in the context of their families of origin, He focuses on the factors fostering inter-generational persistence or erosion of religious commitment.

Wuthnow compares the experiences of people in three broad contexts In Part I, "The Sacred at Home," he considers the home--"Family Rituals [Chapter 1], Home for the Holidays [Chapter 2], and Generations of the Spirit [Chapter 3]. In Part II, Going to Services, he considers the impact of communities and houses of worship: Houses of Worship [Chapter 4], The Ties That Bind [Chapter 5], Learning to be a Leader [Chapter 6]. In Part III, Moving Away, he considers what happens when the subjects moved away from home: Points of Departure, Chapter 7], Remembering the Past [Chapter 8], and The Move to Spiritual Practice [Chapter 9].

Finally, in Part !V, E Pluribus Unum, he considers how these diverse communities in America can live together in productivity and peace: Bridging Diversity [chapter 10], and Seeing with Four Eyes, [Chapter 11].

The book was written to discover the nature of the new winds blowing in the spirituality of Americans. As one friend of his put it, "The one thing I am sure of...is that things are changing profoundly--and the clergy don't have a clue that it's even happening" [xi]. He gathered data through a variety of national surveys and interviews, with respondents ultimately numbering two hundred: 107 woment and 93 men, intentionally very diverse in religious background and practice. Forty three of the respondents were not Judaeo Christian in their outlook.

Wuthnow represents his purposes as follows:

"My aim is to recapture what it has meant for a significant proportion of the American public to have grown up religious. I am interested in how people conceive of their religious upbringing, and in understanding what seems memorable and significant to them, more than I am in abstract theories of religious socialization. My methodology has been to ask ordinary people to talk at length about their experiences and memories and to encourage them to tell the stories they use to make sense of their spiritual journeys.

"Effective religious socialization comes about through embedded practices that is, through specific, deliberate religious activities that are firmly intertwined with the daily habits of family routines, of eating and sleeping, of having conversations, of adorning the spaces in which people live, of celebrating the holidays, and of being part of a community. Compared with these practices, the formal teachings of relgious leaders often pale in significance. Yet when such practices are preetn, formal teachings also become more important.

" The past is not static. It is a remembered past and thus one that people are continually revising, making sense of, and reinterpreting. Many people of course hae little in their childhood to remember about religioun. But those who grew up in a religious household continue to have a very substantial impact on the Character of American religion" [xxxi-xxxii].

Personal journeys play a significant role in his research, as this is a common and contemporaneously appropriate way of examining religious character-formation and the trajectories of people's lives.

His emphasis is upon "the particularity of religious traditions, paying special attention to the distinctive local practices that encouraged people to fee that is was special to be growing up Jewish or Irish Catholic, or to take pride in being African American Baptists or Asian American Presbyterians" [197]. Despite such pride in one's own way of religious life, pluralism and respect for others is possible so long as people see their way as best for themselves rather than best for all. "Loyalties are thus local, imbedded in th customs of one's family and community, and their localism is evident to participants even at an early age" [197]. He also discusses how his respondents are able to live pacifically with other religions due to a deep pluralistic mindset, something which is uncomfortable to me but seems endemic to the post-modern age. Closely related but more palpable is his discussion of multi-culturalism which he rightly distinguishes from old-line Liberalism [219-220].

In the final chapter, his discussion of fundamentalism and how its adherents regard themselves and are regarded by others is fascinating. While pointing out the stridency of fundamentalist rhetoric, the commitment to holding to and advocating a superior truth, the insularity and tendency to reject the wider culture, Wuthnow points out how popular and media portrayals of fundamentalists are biased and inaccurate. He sees a wider divergence among fundmentalists than is usually noted. In reference to all his respondents and the groups they represent, he neatly parses the inner gyroscopes and ways and means such persons navigate between the own strong convictions and commitments and their ability to both respect and understand others.

Finally he comes to the summation statement that "spirituality has been a significant feature of the American past and that it remains so for many people, albeit in different versions than those of their parents and grandparents. Spirituality has ben most effecive in shaping the values of children when it has been practiced at home as well [as] in formal organizations. In the past, people practiced spirituality at home under the most diverse (and adverse) conditions. The lesson from this history should be that spirituality is likely to survive as a feature of American childhood--if parents and grandparents are committed to its importance" [235-236].

This very readable book is a must-read for all concerned with effectively and faithfully transmitting their religious heritage from generation to generation, or seeking to understand the genesis of their own religious convictions or lack of same. Wuthnow is perhaps America's premier sociologist of religion. Read this book and find out why the title is well-deserved.
