A Good Read But Not Scholarly History.......2005-11-27
The book is a homey narrative written many years after the fact. As a consequence, it has some factual errors. Divisions were (and are) commanded by Major Generals, not Lieutenant Generals. The commander's name is misspelled. The caption on the photo of Capt. Boniface's body speaks to another incident at a later time. Nonetheless, the author's folksy style makes it an easy read.

Book Description
"What happened to the passion we started with?
Why aren't we as close as we used to be?"
PROBLEM: If you are a woman who is unfulfilled in your marriage...if you feel unheard or overburdened...if you quietly live in a state of slow-burn resentment...
PROBLEM: If you are a man unhappy that your partner seems so unhappy with you...if you feel bewildered, unappreciated, or betrayed...
This book offers a solution
Bestselling author and nationally renowned therapist Terrence Real unearths the causes of communication blocks between men and women in this groundbreaking work. Relationships are in trouble; the demand for intimacy today must be met with new skills, and Real -- drawing on his pioneering work on male depression -- gives both men and women those skills, empowering women and connecting men, radically reversing the attitudes and emotional stumbling blocks of the patriarchal culture in which we were raised. Filled with powerful stories of the couples Real treats, no other relationship book is as straight talking or compelling in its innovative approach to healing wounds and reconnecting partners with a new strength and understanding.
Customer Reviews:
Relational Intimacy in an Era of Changing Roles.......2007-08-31
This is an excellent book. Real has thought through couple's issues in a smart way, refreshingly different than many who have preceded him.
In this book, Real faces head-on the reality that many women come into couples work with fierce anger, frustrated by trying to achieve true emotional intimacy with their man. His premise is that many women's responsibilities and aspirations have grown as part of the women's movement and their resulting, empowered roles, during decades when many men's roles and expectations have progressed less dramatically. As difficult as the tone of the anger and complaint, Real suggests the substance of women's frustrations is right-on, which will provide some much needed vindication for women readers.
This book is full of composite examples of couples-therapy sessions where the woman's attitude sounds in complaint and withering anger. The man in these examples sounds clueless, and deeply hurt by the woman's anger. Real's prototypical woman comes off like a nag, shaming while complaining. It is at this point where men typically recoil avoiding facing women's needs, and their own fears.
In Real's analysis, unconscious and almost always unacknowledged entitlement characterizes the man's side of the relationship problems. We were raised to quietly sit back in much that happens in the home, letting things take care of themselves. In reality, things don't really take care of themselves; women are taking care of them. Men's toughest work, it seems, is traditionally as breadwinner outside the home. Once home, perhaps enlightened some by the women's movement, we may do some chores and help some with the kids. But we may also quietly avoid the challenging work of true relational intimacy with our woman. The man often sees no problem, or at least no rational issue.
The man may think, "what's the problem: I am nice and thoughtful. I don't rage or abuse....." But the rub may be in his disengagement, and in his urgent avoidance of shame. Having studied male depression (I Don't Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression"), Real understands that men's issues are often driven by shame, where women's are often driven by fear.
Because women are most heavily tasked with maintaining relationship, and are very often dependent on the man for economic and child-rearing reasons, women's fears are usually first expressed circumspectly, on eggshells, rather than angrily. The fierce anger arises later -- after more delicate strategies have maddeningly failed. The anger feels like poison to the man.
Real's approach is much needed, and this book not only explains unflinchingly, but suggests ways out of the deadlock. There have been important contributions along the way - e.g., Getting the Love You Want: A Guide for Couples. And there are libraries full of hyped up, supposed love-life panaceas. This fellow has a smart, tough set of insights, with ideas for finding our way out of the wilderness of too many current relationships. Highly recommended, for both men and women, and for couples therapists.
Real has since published an excellent follow up book structured a bit more as a "how to" guide: The New Rules of Marriage: What You Need to Know to Make Love Work. This is also very highly recommended.
Not convinced.......2007-06-08
Mr. Real asserts as an established fact that traumatizing events in childhood cause us to adopt patriarchal male and female roles in our adult lives and in our relationships. Even if this were true - and for the record I wasn't convinced - he has precious little in his book that a lay reader can take away and use. I found his writing style to be pedantic and touchy-feely at the same time (not an easy thing to pull off), and sprinkled with long stretches of incomprehensible gibberish. Why use one little word when ten big ones will do? The guy just wouldn't get to the point.
Professionals in this field may have a better appreciation for the style and content of this book, but I would not recommend it to those in need of counsel.
How Can I get through to you?.......2007-05-12
This book was written before the Marriage book Terry wrote. In some ways I got more information that I needed. If you are trying to improve any relationship this book is a must read. Terry Real is right on!
A must read for therapists as well as couples.......2006-10-22
I read this book to get continuing eductaion credits for my social work license. It's completely changed how I look at the therapy process. It's also completely changed how I look at my marriage. It provides an effective, yet not impossibly complicated, roadmap through the dilemmas and no-win situations in which couples find themselves. It gave me insights into what I was doing wrong, and ideas of how I could quickly change.
Is this a male bashing book? I thought so at first. As much as I liked the book, I resented being stereotyped as a male with a certain commitment to accomplishment at the expense of vulnerability and feelings. I'm actually just the opposite, a product of 1960's encounter groups. Toward the end of the book, though, Real does acknowledge that every now and then there is a male who has the opposite problem. He's in touch with feelings, the nurturing side of life, but perhaps viewed as a loser in the world of accomplishments. And that fits me dead on!
The book's style isn't typical for a book about therapy. There's a great deal of self-revelation on Real's part, and also many passages that would pass as high-caliber fiction were they not obviously based on fact. Real is a skillful writer. And that makes him easier to read.
Not male-bashing, but patriarchy bashing.......2006-03-07
I am applying to graduate school to be a Marriage and Family Counselor and I believe this book will be my guiding star. I've read a few reviews that claim it to be "male-bashing" or "all women are right, all men are wrong". Those who have written this must have not read the caring, empathic way that Terry has addressed the hurt that disconnection has caused these men he chronicles. I have many wonderful men in my life - a caring father, two wonderful older brothers - and I understand Terry's point that masculine in not necessarily an assignation of gender. There are masculine and feminine qualities, and both genders can have any of them. Predominantly, the men have masculine ones - however, did these reviewers not notice the example of the woman who fled to the "power-up" position in a masculine fashion? The response is wrong - not the gender that has this response forced upon them.
Relationships, or relational skills, are feminine skills. Men are not generally taught them - this does not make them "wrong" and it isn't "bashing" to say so. Terry's practical guide on how to reestablish connection speaks to the men, yes, but also to the woman - so she can learn how to make her voice heard in a respectful, loving way.
My advice to any man who would like to read this is to put down your shield, and realize that your women want to LOVE you, not beat you. That's patriarchial thinking right there - this isn't a war. It's a relationship, and it's about love.

Insight.......2005-07-21
This book has given me an insight into interpersonal communication that has been of extroadinary value to me. The methods they describe are not complex, and very useable even after a first read. The eye-opening effect the book has had on me is even more valuable to me than the specific method that it provides for tuning the communication.
explains how to fit communication style to personality type.......2003-01-18
This information-rich book describes a model to communicate with others based on their personality type. While the book is focused on improving intimate relationships, it is equally valuable for business or social communication. It contains many helpful tables, but the text sometimes seems disjointed or oddly organized. However, the content is unique and valuable.
Unlike many self-help books, this one is packed with ideas and techniques that will benefit most anyone. It is on of the two or three best self-help books I have read.
Book Description
Does your husband always seem to miss the point of what you're saying? Do you feel that your wife never listens when your're trying to say something important? Do the two of you have the same old arguments over and over again? In this book, the authors who are professional communication experts reveal an important breakthrough method for improving communication in relationships. This system was developed out of Foster's overwhelmingly successful interview technique, which is professionally regarded as one of the best methods of communicating, interacting with people, and getting them to reveal their essential nature.

Great Book.......2000-04-05
I am finishing reading this book and it has helped me to see my personality type (DRIVER) and how differently people react to similar situations because of their personalities. I recommend this book to anyone who can't seem to get through to your boss or to other people you work for or with. This book has helped me understand some signs people display when they lie, when they are depressed or angry. It is well written and documented. You won't regret the purchase of this book. Did I get through to you?
A study of human behavior.......1999-04-09
This book is a very good study in human nature, I think that the material can be used in many different areas of your life besides spousal relationships. I have attended seminars presented by the author (D.Glenn Foster) and have found that his technique is effective. If you always wondered why your other half acts the way he/she does this is a excellent book to read.

It may be hard to imagine that your precious little tabby cat, purring so contently as she curls up on your lap, is in any way related to a lion or tiger. Yet your feline is closer to her predatory cousins than you ever dared imagine, according to David Alderton, author of The Tiger Inside. His unique approach to cat development and behavior focuses on the similarities between wild and domestic cats--your pet's moods and habits are very much shaped by ancestry. Understanding the tiger in your cat is the key to a greater awareness of your animal's needs and well-being. The author believes that many cat problems are linked to that wild side, such as dragging food from the dish, sudden aggression, and scratching furniture. He shares tips and suggestions for helping solve your kitty's adverse behavior--advice that is succinct and logical. Even if you own a perfect puss, the wisdom in this book aims to enhance the feline-human bond. Five highly readable chapters focus on a wide array of topics, including cat communication, health, grooming, and temperament, with a particular emphasis placed on instinct and natural behavior. But The Tiger Inside is more than just a feline well-being guide--it is also a fascinating natural-history lesson on the evolution of the cat. Full-color photographs, anatomical diagrams, and an abundance of useful information make for an enlightening and entertaining read. --Naomi Gesinger

Amazing Cat Book.......2002-01-28
I received this book as a Christmas present, and I could not put it down. It is filled with so much useful information on cats. Starting with the history of our pet cats from their wild ancestors, through domestication, breeding and basic care. I found the chapters on feeding and health care very informative. There was even information on alternative health care. I especially enjoyed the tips on giving your cat a bath. In addition, the pictures in this book are gorgeous. Not only are there pictures of pet cats, but also incredible pictures of wildcats. This is a great book for any cat owner.

I give this to every new parent.......2001-11-28
I purchased this book in 1984 when I was pregnant with my first child. I've since had 5 more kids, and this book has come in handy with all of them.
The authors took a survey of bunches of women, and then compiled their advice into this book. Real problems, real solutions, from real moms. From how to fold a cloth diaper, to how to calm a colicky baby, to how to tie-dye baby clothes to cover spit-up stains.
I buy this book and a good medical book (the title escapes me at the moment) for expectant parents. I can't recommend it enough.
WATCH OUT!.......2000-08-02
This book is good but DO NOT PUT YOUR CHILD TO SLEEP ON ITS STOMACH AS THIS OUTDATED BOOK SUGGESTS ... DOCTORS NOW TELL PARENTS TO PUT THEIR CHILDREN TO SLEEP ON THEIR BACKS, BECAUSE OF S.I.D.S.
A Guide to Bringing Up Baby that Doesn't Lecture!.......2000-06-22
This book was indispensable to me when I had my first child. It is filled with true stories from real parents of what the first year was like, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I found it very comforting to realize that there were other mothers out there not afraid to admit that the first few months with baby could, at times, be frustrating and frightening, while still miraculous and full of unbelievable moments of joy. Rather than advocating one method for feeding, burping, getting the baby to sleep through the night, etc. it gives first-hand accounts and ingenious tips that worked for parents of many different styles. Sidebars on what to bring to the hospital and what to stock in your medicine cabinet make this a great resource even before the baby is born. One caveat: It's a bit outdated, so check with your own pediatrician before following some of the recommendations, such as which way the newborn should sleep (back vs. stomach vs. side--it changes about every 4 years).
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic, but Believable.......2005-09-11
i loved this book, and i think any reader who isn't blown away by it must be used to airport newsstand trash, not real journalism. i was about to write a rave review myself, but found this one from the herald to be dead on the money:
"Despite its sensationalist title, Girl Trouble is no hastily assembled fallen-superstar exposé, and McDougall is no mere gossip-rag hack. Using the "Siempre en Domingo" performance as his launching point, McDougall - who has written for The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, and the Associated Press - delves deeply and thoroughly into the bizarre irony that would become Gloria Trevi's life and career. In the process he seeks - and largely provides - answers and understanding rather than simple exploitation of this stranger-than-fiction tale.
Two very detailed stories emerge from Girl Trouble; the first of which is the story of Trevi herself and her meteoric rise to become Mexico's Madonna.
Singing songs that championed teen sexual liberation and bashed traditional macho attitudes, all the while sporting a carefree thrift-store chic and a metaphorically untamed mane of hair, Trevi was adored by young audiences - especially young female audiences. She even won over members of Mexico's intellectual community. Social critic Carlos Monsivaís and author Elena Poniatowska wrote about her in glowing praise, and none other than Zapatista guerilla leader Subcomandante Marcos admitted to being a fan.
But at the same time that she was loudly and proudly extolling sexual liberation, freedom and girl power, Trevi herself seemed to be living an entirely monkish existence. She was never spotted out and about town, she seemed to have few friends, and she never dated. When she stepped on stage or when a television camera was turned on her, she burst into her irreverent, unconstrained persona. But when the spotlight was turned off, she immediately turned sulky and introverted.
There was a good explanation for the strange dichotomy in Trevi's personality, however. She, along with a rotating cast of more than a dozen other young women and girls, had become part of a secret brainwashing sex cult cultivated by producer/manager Sergio Andrade, a quintessential macho control artist.
Here the second and larger story takes over Girl Trouble as McDougall painstakingly reconstructs not only the lurid details of the Andrade cult's workings, but also the psychology that allowed it to take shape in the first place.
Sergio Andrade, while blessed with at least some knack for penning hum-able pop tunes, is repeatedly characterized in the book as fat, ugly, boorish, slovenly, sullen, and essentially devoid of any sort of endearing personality trait. Yet somehow he managed to convince a rotating cast of young teenage girls - as well as women's lib champion Glori Trevi herself - to submit to beatings, rape, starvation and ritual humiliation. And they bore it all while remaining completely loyal, obedient, and most importantly, silent.
As McDougall explains it, Andrade's madness followed a precise scientific logic. He, along with the able help of Trevi, targeted and recruited girls almost exclusively aged 12 and 13 years to join his "talent school;" a cover for what was in effect an indoctrination center.
"But was it pure sexual attraction on his part, or strategy" to choose 12 and 13 year olds, the author ponders. To answer that question, McDougall consults with teen culture analysts as well as the classic developmental psychology theory of Erik Erikson. When the responses assert that the transition age from child to teen is precisely that at which a girl's mind is most vulnerable to influence, McDougall concludes that Sergio knew exactly what he was doing.
Once the girls had been recruited into joining Andrade's academy, they were subjected to a seemingly standardized routine of anxiety-provoking performance tests, psychological manipulation, and then later, sexual and physical abuse. McDougall turns to cognitive theory and scientific treatises on brainwashing to show that Andrade's program was no accident, but rather a regime designed precisely and perfectly to gain the girls' unquestioning obedience.
McDougall's analysis certainly helps to answer one question plaguing the reader: why in the world did these girls so willingly accept what was happening to them? But there is, of course, a follow-up question that begs to be answered as well: where in the world were the parents during all of this?
Ultimately, only after a 14-year-old Trevi backup singer abandoned her newborn baby - one of several children fathered by Andrade within the clan - could Mexican authorities persuade a set of parents to press charges. And so finally, in March of 1999, Andrade and Trevi were formally charged with rape, kidnapping and corruption of minors.
Panicked, Andrade took his harem and hid out in Brazil, fathering several more babies with the girls in hopes of protecting the clan against extradition. Eventually, in January of 2000, he and Trevi were arrested and sent to solitary confinement in Brazilian jail, where in the next bizarre plot turn, Gloria announced that she had somehow become pregnant.
McDougall followed it all, from Trevi giving birth in Brazilian prison, to the pair's extradition back to Mexico, and then, this past September, to Gloria's surprise acquittal on all charges by a Chihuahua state judge."
Miami Herald book review.......2005-09-03
"That's where Christopher McDougall, who covered Trevi's story for The New York Times, picks up. Pretending to be an old music-industry pal of Andrade's, McDougall got into the famously fearsome Brazilian Papuda Correctional Facility to interview him. (McDougall speaks fluent Spanish and Portuguese.) He also finagled his way into Gloria's cell, where she promised him the truth: "I am who I tell you I am."
In unraveling the mystery, McDougall also got close to Aline Hernandez, who was a skinny 13-year-old when Gloria plucked her from a crowd for admission to the school. Aline alleged that Sergio made her strip for her "audition," later raped her, forced her into group sex, beat her with electrical cords and, when she was 15, married her. (She was the fourth Mrs. Sergio Andrade, and not the youngest.)
So what's the weirdest thing about this story? Too close to call.
"Girl Trouble" was plucked from the headlines, but has a longer shelf life ahead of it - for one thing, Trevi's comeback album just went platinum. Beyond that, McDougall gives the book a powerful resonance by finding the larger cultural context of this singularly bizarre tale."
Wow! What a story, what a storyteller........2005-09-02
This is one of the most sensational true-crime books I have ever read, and one reason I loved it is because it's not sensationalized. Christopher McDougall makes Gloria Trevi appear so true to life, and then peels back the layers of her on-stage persona to reveal the troubled, scary, cunning woman beneath. His characterization of the arch mastermind, Sergio Andrade, is amazing: you can't believe that a guy like that could rise to such power and remain free for so long, yet McDougall does a masterful job of showing exactly how Andrade DID get away with his secret girl-group sex cult for so long. If you're looking for a window into the dark corners of show business, sexual perversion or the perversions of wealth and power, this is it.
Blah.......2005-07-22
This is a really interesting story. The writing? Leaves a LOT to be desired and turns the otherwise incredible subject matter into a boring mess.
His feature exposes the truth behind the scandal.......2005-04-10
Superstar Gloria Trevi was finally freed from prison after being cleared of rape and kidnapping charges, and intends to act and release an album, so "Girl Trouble" will be the perfect announcement of her return to stardom. Trevi was accused of masterminding the kidnap, rape and brainwashing of nearly a dozen teens in Brazil: Christopher McDougall is a journalist determined to uncover the truth, and his feature for the New York Times Magazine exposes the truth behind the scandal, tracing Trevi's involvement in the sex-slave scandal and in the music and acting worlds.

A harrowing tale of survival and rebirth.......2000-07-10
The author writes in a direct conversational way. It's a page-turner from its opening and you can't put this book down until you finish it and find out how the author's story ends. The author writes of many aspects of pre-war Europe which were largly neglected before. This is a valuable book with mainly new information on the Holocaust.
