It Couldn't Have Been Done Better.......2001-08-02

This book is a must for anyone who loves food. Nine comprehensive chapters covering not only fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes, but also meat and poultry, fish and shellfish and dairy and eggs.

The chapter on Nutrition Basics is essential for anyone who wants to come to terms with food and how it relates to good health. Appendicies include a Cooking Glossary (which describes in detail baking, boiling, braising, poaching, pressure cooking, roasting, simmering, steeping, stewing, and on and on ...), Fats and Oils, and Herbs and Spices.

Subsections of each item include topics such as availability, shopping tips, storage, preparations and serving suggestions. Nutritional information boxes are included indicating calories, fat content, protein, carbohydrate, fiber, cholesterol and sodium. Also listed are key vitamins and nutrients.

Fascinating information is also included .. for example, the fruit/vegetable argument about tomatoes is not only settled definitively (botanically a fruit, specifically a berry) but we are also informed that as the result of a tariff dispute, it was officially designated a vegetable in 1893 by the Supreme Court of the United States ... Proving that the court's having their collective head up their robes is nothing new.

If you are serious about learning how to improve your relationship with food (and who isn't?) you've simply got to have this book. I've had mine since 1995 (I got it in conjunction with a subscription to the University of California at Berkeley's Wellness Letter), and I still consult it regularly.

I think that this book, along with Julia Child's "The Way To Cook" would be an excellent foundation for anyone who is serious about health and nutrition.

Absolutely excellent! Every food I've ever looked up has been in this book. It includes thorough nutrition information on all foods. Every food listing includes the following sections: varieties, availability, shopping tips, storage, preparation, and serving suggestions. Also nicely illustrated, well organized. Fabulous resource. Can't wait for the 99 edition.

This beautiful, great book is my "food bible". I use it to learn about different items, to know the nutritional value and to find out cooking procedures and times for various foods.

It is the best, all around nutrition book I have, and I am a food scientist (I attended University of California at Davis - I am surprised they don't recommend us to buy it!).

This is one of the best presents I have ever given to my parents too.

This useful book provides detailed nutrition information, preparation tips, storage tips, etc. for a huge variety of foods. For instance, after finding persimmons on sale at the grocery store, but not really knowing how to tell if they are ripe or how they are best eaten, I consulted this book and found all the answers! The book also explains what phytonutrients are present in the different foods and what health benefits they may provide. I highly recommend it!

This book has TONS of information on an enormous range of foods. It lists and describes varieties, health benefits/myths/concerns, nutritional information, history, and serving suggestions for everything from apples and asparagus to flour and sweeteners. I bought pasilla peppers at farmer's market today, and looked them up to see how they compared to anaheims in terms of flavor and heat. It's a very convenient resource.

I was recently diagnosed with type I diabetes, and this book has become absolutely essential to me. I can look up how many calories are in an avocado and how many carbohydrates are in a persimmon. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is trying to control their diet, or is just curious about their food.

This is the best book I have found yet on starting your own photography business. It is incredibly helpful. He is funny and down to earth and talks about how he runs his business and then gives other ideas of ways to do it.

Hi points - Interesting, readable, good suggestions and examples on how to transition from a "9 to 5" job to independent photographer.

Low points - Over emphasis on film aspects (non-digital) of running a business (setting up a dark room and lab...), computer section so basic it's almost humorous, no review of digital tools such as PhotoShop or Paint Shop Pro.

The general information is good for those in the dreaming stage. I suggest you find it at your local library, (sorry Amazon) because it's not something you'll go back to over and over. Mr. Oberrecht's detailed use of a paper document and bookeeping system is excruciating. It seems he views computers as a necessary evil instead of the powerfull tool they can be.

As someone who is seriously considering making this move, I was disappointed.

It will not be the only book you need, but you will find that it is a great introduction that gives you the necessary information to get started. I would never buy this book! They sent us a fax with no return fax number and no way to be removed from their fax list. There was no contact number of any sort. This is a very sleazy way to do business and I would never buy a book from a company who would do this!!

Cut and Dry.......2002-04-30

This book contains alot of great information for the parent who is RECENTLY SEPARATED OR DIVORCED. It gives a simple explaination how to negotiate the court system, what forms need to be filed, how to find an attorney, and how to determine child support.

Unfortunately, we were already deep into our pursuit of custody of my step-daughter when I purchased this book and found the information to be too vague. We also felt the book is targeted to mothers and did not address the issues fathers have to face when seeking a change in custody.

Despite the above, this book was a useful piece of reference material. We referred to the book often when we needed explanation legal terminology.

All in all, the book was helpful, but not what we hoped for when we purchased it.

Child Custody Made Simple covers every issue of a custody plan and going to court about custody, finding the right lawyer or representing yourself, how to respond to custody emergencies, and enforcing child support. Watnik is not a lawyer, but this book is well-written and complete. This is a great primer for someone representing themselves in a custody matter, as well as someone represented by an attorney. It's a gem of a resource for who to contact for what kind of help, as well as defining the sometimes confusing legal jargon that accompanies custody cases. I read your book and I think it is a very good book. It tells about both sides--the woman and the man. Most books only take one side or the author has a bias, but your book presents the information without any bias. It was very complete and answered many of my questions. This is a great book on custody and support issues.

Webster Watnik, the author, presents a huge amount of information with accuracy, clarity, and simplicity. He offers tips on choosing a lawyer, explains legal terms, describes options, and how to get what you want and need.

Mr. Watnik is a professional writer, not a lawyer, who surpasses many lawyers in explaining the law. I think everyone should buy this book.

Clinton Heylin recognizes the HUGE gap between the best & worst of Dylan and doesn't underestimate it.

Very insightful reading but probably way more than the casual Dylan fan will be willing to put up with (like most of the author's Dylan-related work).

Much more of an encyclopedia than Michael Gray's "encyclopedia."

Largely OK, but occasionally annoy style of writing.......2006-03-14

I enjoyed the book. But I think it appeals to my sense of the minutae and my love of "alternative" recordings, perhaps somebody who is not particularly interested in how records were made might not find this particularly engrossing. It is a largely repetitive tale: make record, destroy record, make record again, fire band, hire band, tour, fire key band member, hire band member, make record... (repeat cycle) particularly from Street Legal onwards. With some personal stuff in between, girlfriends, marriage break-up and christianity.

I think what this book is crying out for is a musical accompaniment that Biograph and TBS1-3 can only hint at, but we are slowly getting closer to the release of the many treasures cast aside in Bob's as his lack of confidence and inability to find a perspective on his current and (perhaps more importantly, his best regarded) work took over.

In terms of style, I don't find the indented quotes annoying, what I do find irritating and unnessary are the fastidious corrections of minor details in square brackets. I also found Clinton's evident fandom somewhat overbearing, and his fanzine style (dropping in song titles in the place of his own prose) to be intensely irritating. I didn't think it was particularly objective either, Bob is genius, everyone else sucks.

By and large though it's a good book, and the irritations are relatively minor. It's a hugely interesting read, and rightly rivetting during the key periods, 1964-69, and 1975-6.

One should also try and read Bob's Chronicles as well. Which I probably need to do again, after reading this to see where the two tales differ.

Dylan deserves far more contempt than this.......2004-11-05

Well needless to say, Dylan's self-contempt is nonexistent. And his arrogant self-righteousness is breathtaking. Here's a guy whose adulteries destroyed his marriage and yet he still has the arrogance to chastize other people for being non-Christians.

I additionally hate Bob Dylan for his self-congratulatory artsy-fartsy name. I wish Bob Zimmerman had changed his name to Bob Zim.

This book is well researched.

It is written in a good language.

It is rather objective.

It has nothing to do with who Bob Dylan is.

Here you will find every single detail the author has ever found out about Bob Dylan. It doesn't matter whether it's important or not. This makes this book something akin to an encyclopedia - and, for me, there is a big difference between a biography and an encyclopedia. I read the former to get at least a bit closer to the essence of a fascinating personality. I've never read one of the latter from cover to cover.

If you want information, and lots of dry, even though well-presented, facts, you will find them here. All of them. A year-by-year, day-by-day account of Dylan's life.

I think Dylan is something more.

As Objective and Thorough as a Biography can be........2003-07-27

In Behind the Shades Revisted, Heylin presents his findings with the astute, detached eye of a detective. Some reviewers are skeptical of an unauthorized biography, but Heylin effectively defends his approach: With authorized biographies, the subject has ultimate approval of the finished product. Consequently, the results are unavoidably subjective and incomplete. Heylin culls from a multitude diverse sources (interviews with musicians Dylan has worked with, friends, former girlfriends, ex-wives, to name just a few), presenting many different sides of his subject. Heylin has never interviewed or even met Dylan, and while this makes Behind the Shades feel somewhat detached, it offers more potential for objectivity. [Dylan is notoriously disingenous with reporters, so the value of first-hand interviews is probably negligible.]

Heylin describes Dylan's childhood and adolescence in northern Minnesota. Dylan's origins (both personal and musical) are described; Dylan has been enthusiastic about music at least since his early teens. Heylin provides detailed analysis of Dylan's early influences (mostly American pop icons like Little Richard) and follows his evolution during his early 20s, when he discovered folk and blues. He then proceeds to describe Dylan's artistic heyday during the mid-60's, his late 60s-early 70s hiatus, and his mid-70s resurgence.

One of the most impressive aspects of Heylin's writing is his willingness to discuss Dylan's largely derided work during the 80s-early 90s. While Dylan's work during this era has been understandably ridiculed (though Heylin's interpretation of much from this period is a little more positive than most other critics), his analysis provides essential insight into his subject.

Whether intentionally or not, Heylin creates a dichotomous portrait of Dylan. The younger Dylan (ca 1960-68) is a vibrant, often affable personality with unwavering idealism. As the story progresses, the pressures of fame and the demanding nature of celebrity begin to take there toll to the extent that it seems to impact Dylan's work. By the time Behind the Shades concludes, Dylan is presented as a weary, slightly confused and misanthropic curmudgeon no longer capable of producing new material that is inspired or surprising. This is the only arguable flaw with Behind the Shades. This conclusion might have seemed perfectly reasonable in 1999 (when the edition I read was published), but the release of Love and Theft in 2001 somewhat discredits Heylin's conclusion. Heylin can hardly be blamed for this; Love and Theft, Dylan's most inspired work in fifteen years (and his most extroverted since the 60s), was a completely unexpected triumph, but it does make the last chapter seem a little dated.

Despite it's slight flaws in the last chapter or two (hardly his fault) Heylin has created a rich, multi-faceted portrait. By interspersing numerous quotes from Dylan's associates within his own writing, Heylin creates a book of many voices. Heylin definitely has strong views, but tries to be fair and accurate, and makes every effort to present contrary perspectives. Despite it's seemingly intimidating length (700+ pages), Behind the Shades is compellingly readable; his approach is always well-defined, and often clever (he subtly reference Dylan's lyrics on numerous occasions). Behind the Shades is a critical, objective portrait of pop music's greatest (and most psychologically elusive) songwriter.
