Time for Dan McAdams.......2007-06-05

A dear friend and life long student of Psych, who is about to become a doctor of Psych gave me this book several years ago. She'd written so many notes in it, which to me translates into value and reverance for what one reads. I always meant to read it, life just kept getting in the way. Finally it was time for me to meet the mind of Dan McAdams, at least as it was when he wrote this book, I think perhaps, slightly before it's time, maybe. It helped me to foster insights that have been like donning good reading glasses in a life with some patches of fog.

It's always so refreshing to relearn something we already knew at a deep unconcious level and be able to resonate with that on a higher level. This is what this book does for me. I highly suggest it to those who are interested in writing (anything) or learning more about them selves and how we all effect each other as well. No man is an island we are simutaneosly land and water to each other. Thank you Dr. McAdams and Dr. Sunshine my friend for giving me this ray of light.

A Seminal Work.......2005-09-27

If you want to understand narrative psychology in a developmental framework here is where to start. It is not overly technical, which is actually a bit of a drawback for those of us who would like more background and theory. But, it is an excellent intruduction to the field, very readable, and many people cite McAdams in their subsequent reserach (which I certainly will be doing).

I have never been to Tahiti, but after reading the fun, informative facts about Tahiti, seeing the beautiful pictures, and sampling some of the excellent cocktail recipes, I am ready to go!

Mr. Bondurant's love and knowledge of Tahiti come through clearly in the book, which is very well laid out. It provides enough information and explains things in such a way that an amateur can make delicious Tahitian cocktails as well as the most experienced bartender. The fun facts about Tahiti, along with summaries of the total hotels and the gorgeous pictures, makes this book a must have.

Until I can take my first trip to Tahiti, this book will help bring a little Tahiti to my home.

This is a PHENOMINAL resource for any parent who has just discovered that their child is deaf and doesn't know where to turn. I like this book because it was from an individual who had first hand knowledge of Tupac's life. (his bodyguard) It was an eye opener when he started to explain about the night Tupac and Suge Knight were gunned down. To me it leaves alot more questions. It's not a page turner but it's still a good read.

This book gives you an insight about what really did go down in Las Vegas on the night of Tupac's shooting. I really enjoyed reading it! The Life story of Tupac is a great adventure and Frank Alexander spoke of the kind hearted side of Tupac in this book and not his media preception. If your looking for a good book, buy this!

Excellent Book ***** (5 Stars)

Poorly ghost-written recollections........2004-12-15

Although at times an interesting look into the decadence and fast living that is offered to those with fame and fortune, it amounts to nothing more than a poorly ghost-written book of recollections by a first-hand witness (bodyguard) of Tupacs last year of life. Like so many other projects that make an attempt to capitalize on the late Rap Stars life, it never gets below the surface of Tupac the celebrity, and leaves the reader without any insights as to how and why, Tupac had, and continues to have, such an enormous impact on Rap/Hip-Hop music and culture. Instead we get insights like the one on page 84 in the book "Do you know why woman loved Tupac? The obvious reasons are his talent, his looks, and his charisma..but also Tupac had a f**kin' horse c**k". From the way it was written and presented, it doesnt seem like Mr.Frank Alexander had any strong motive or desire to bring this book to the public, otherthan reasons that start with dollar signs $$$. But I have to say that in the final chapters the book finally comes alive with Mr.Alexanders powerful, poignant, honest memories of the events that took place when, and after Tupac was shot, and eventually died in Las Vegas. In these chapters he reflects on his confrontation with Suge Knight, and the confusion, guilt, sorrow and fear he was feeling as Tupac struggled for his life in the hospital, and the aftermath that followed Tupacs death, it ends with an intimate phone conversation between Alexander and Tupacs Mother. Its worth reading the book just for these last chapters alone, its very, very moving. Unfortunately, its too little, too late in the book to make its entirety a good read. I was 25 when Tupac died, and I was into Heavy Metal more than Rap/Hip-Hop, but always being a big Tupac fan, upon hearing of his death that day, besides feeling sorrow, I also remember feeling it was the end of an era, I knew Rap would never be the same and there would never be another one like him. It was the same feeling I had when Kurt Cobain died. And ten years later, looking at all the Rap/Hip-Hop that has come after Tupacs death, I realized my feeling that day was right, Pac was truly one of a kind, and something special died with him that night in Vegas, and Raps never been the same since. This books OK, but I expected more.

RIP Tupac. We all miss you.. and we're still down for you.

He talks about how he was poor and he lived in the "hood" and how he got into rapping, and lead to his fame and demise. The person who wrote this book is Frank Alexander he was Tupacs body guard and he was with Tupac every day,all day. He wrote this book because he and Tupac became very close frends. I like this book because I am a big fan of Tupacs and I recommend this book to all the Tupac fans out there.

beautiful story and so poignantly written. the author lived at a very crucial time in modern history, and i feel priveleged to have gained a window into her world. the heroine of the book, sara schenirer, and the author are two outstanding examples of women who have chosen to raise themselves higher than angels. their stories are an inspiration to all to try and do the same.

A most disliked character.......2006-10-28

Even though Munoz Molina makes the reader want to read his short novel without wanting to stop, this reader enjoyed reading it for the whole purpose of disliking the male protagonist more and more as the plot went on. Mario is a weakling, a man who is so afraid of losing Blanca, his wife, that he will not be himself. There are times when he seems to want to quit this masochistic relationship, and face losing his wife in order to be himself and live his real life, but he never does it. The one redeeming moment when he would tell his spoiled, purposeless, drug-alcohol-sex addicted wife to walk out the door, never comes to the dismay of this reader and those other readers who have to put up with two of the most pitiful characters in contemporary Spanish narrative.

A very informative book for those who suffer from auto immune diseases.......2007-01-09

This book is well presented and full of interesting facts. Although aimed at the layman it uses rather a lot of medical terminology and certainly hits hard. If you have the misfortune to have one or more auto immune diseases and want to be informed about the course of your illness, the medication available and the research into new medication and possible cures, I would certainly recommend this book. However it is not for the faint hearted!

MUCH NEEDED BOOK FOR MEDICAL & NON-MEDICAL PERSONNEL.......2003-12-29

This book is a must-read for all who have or suspect they or family members or friends have an autoimmune disorder. It is presented in a very organized and efficent manner and is helpful to the patient as well as the health care professional.

It is obvious that the authors have throughly researched all the materials necessary to present accurate, unbiased and essential information. The book is well organized, cross-referenced and covers autoimmune disorders from A to Z.

In addition to the book itself, the resources listed in it are priceless!

Even after being a Myasthenia Gravis patient and coping with the disorder for years, I learned more about Myasthenia by reading this book. I also gave my doctor a copy! Those of us with autoimmune disorders should make it priority read!

The interviews with patients were especially helpful and those with health care professionals were excellent. The possibility of a female having an autoimmune disorder is much higher than that of a male, so the book's main focus is on women. However, it is extremely helpful to men, also.

My family and friends now understand much more about my disease. Congratulations to the authors on a much awaited and much needed book.

I found this book quite helpful in sorting through the maze of symptoms of various autoimmune disorders. It even helped me to self-diagnose one I did not know I had. The information is well laid out; it is comprehensive and current while not overly scientific. The cross reference of other automimmune diseases is particularly useful.

No matter what else is going on with the UFO Phenomenon, a large part of it has to be the reduction of the Earth's population. And AIDS is very effective at doing just that, even though the process may take generations. I feel that this book is on the right track, suggesting a multi-pronged introduction of AIDS into different environments, at the same time, and with different characteristics. I do not think that nature could have done this on its own.

The genius of Novarodok.......2007-09-13

This book is written by someone who knows what he is talking about. The author has obviously put considerable time and effort into contemplating his topic and investigating it from many standpoints. There are not too many books in English that address the reality of Novarodok. The school of musar that emerged from Novarodok is so unique and powerful, has had such a deep influence on Eastern European Jewry and Yiddish literature ( Chaim Grade, etc.) that I have long wondered why it is rarely mentioned in any depth in English.

There are some excellent books in Hebrew ( T'nuat Ha-Musar as well as others mentioned in the book's bibliography) the most famous of which is the magnum opus of this stream, Madregat Ha-adam, which will provide more understanding on a basic, academic level. Amazingly, Madregat Ha-adam, the only published work of Rabbi Yosef Yoizel Hurvitz, der alter fun Novarodok, the central figure in all of this, has never been translated into English. The prospective English speaking student is confronted with a blunt reality; these texts require a knowledge of Hebrew and in the case of Madregat Ha-adam an understanding of Torah and musar that many lack in our generation. In addition, as I have learned from personal encounters, musar is a living tradition that must be lived and learned from a teacher who learned from other authentic teachers. It is a true spiritual discipline, a lifetime's work and not for the faint of heart.

The musar movement of Slobodka, Kelm and Novarodok , as an intense, living phenomeon, is largely vanished. However, this book helps us to get a small taste of the greatness of Novarodok.

Outstanding treatment of the subject........2007-07-08

Dr. Levin has done an outstanding job of providing the reader with an overview of the Novarodok movement and its influence on Jewry. He provides a concise history, selections for Madregas HoOdom, a brief biographical sketch of Reb Yosef Yoizel, vignettes of great students, and an outstanding bibliography for additional reading/learning.

This book is a MUST-READ for anyone with an interest in the Mussar movement. It left me with a yearning for more.
