Perfect!.......2007-03-08
This book was just what I needed to maintain my workouts while traveling. The sections on different exercises with or without equipment were perfect, because you can't always predict what space/equipment will be available.

Great text for weight loss and health!.......2005-06-16
I received this book as part of a PR packet in my office and when the author called to see if I had received it I took a deeper look. I have just ordered three more copies so that a number of us in the office can do the program together. I have history of CVD, Diabetes and Cancer on both sides of my family and feel that this healthful, well-rounded program will help me change the message my cells are getting from the food I eat. I will be giving this book as a gift as well as following the plan for the rest of my life.
Thank you, Jennifer!

An unnecessary fictionalized account of the White Rose.......2002-10-06
I understand that the author found inspiration in the story of the White Rose, and wanted to write something to help the story reach more people. However, the story of the White Rose is such that it doesn't need any fictionalization in order to make it fascinating. Furthermore, by fictionalizing it, the story loses much of its power.
The drawback with some historical accounts is that one can lose the personalities within the events. This book is geared toward younger readers, and with the fictionalization tries to bring people closer to the characters. This book is centered on the character of Hans Scholl and takes place in the days he is in prison, with flashbacks to the "major events" that led up to his imprisonment.
My critisisms of this of this book are quite major. In the first place, there seems to be only three people in the White Rose, those being Hans, Alexander Schmorell, and Sophie Scholl. There is a fourth major character in the book, a fictional character, a "friend" of Hans', who, in contrast to the White Rose, follows the Nazis. Although this person is fictional, he plays a key role in many of the flashbacks, which I find annoying. However, more annoying than that are the characterizations of the members of the White Rose. Alex and Sophie seem to have nothing better to do than to flirt with each other. Hans seems to be going through a mental crisis whilst in prison, which bothers me because every factual report is to the contrary. However, for many "small" instances, sticking to the facts didn't seem to be a huge priority.
As for the other members of the White Rose, they are hardly mentioned. Christoph Probst is mentioned a few times, probably because the author could not avoid the fact that Christoph was imprisoned with the Scholls and was executed on the same day. Professor Huber was mentioned, but didn't really have a role in the book. I find it especially troublesome, though, that Willi Graf, who undoubtedly was a part of the core of the White Rose, and would be tortured and executed as such, was only mentioned twice. Not only that, but once it seemed almost an afterthought, in a sentence that went somewhat like the following - "Others, too, were tried and convicted for being members of the White Rose, like the student Willi Graf, who was also executed".
Although finding books in English about the White Rose is extremely difficult at this time, this is not a book that one is going to find particularly enlightening about the group. I rated this book two stars because each book gets one star automatically, and the second star is one for effort. The White Rose is undoubtedly something that deserves to be known about, but this book doesn't do much to help that cause.

A Thriller That Counts.......2000-05-09
Hawksley's background is impeachable, the subject matter relevant and timely, and Mike McKillip a character potentially worth following. Now that the Cold War is over, we need to turn eyes on the China region he knows so well. First rate.
Ceremony of Innocence by Humphrey Hawksley.......2000-01-25
Humphrey Hawksley who is well known as Far Eastern BBC Correspondent and more recently war correspondent in Kossovo and Timor uses his journalistic knowledge of the Far East to reveal in all too chilling and convincing detail what might be going on behind the headlines. He is one of the best informed and therefore one of the more frightening political writers around. Ceremonies of Innocence, his first solo novel, gets China right in many ways (as a Peking resident his descriptions of the streets, the bars, the corridors of government all ring true to me) and his projections of how the future might be - a cynical, sad and slowly more compromised Hong Kong, the forces of reform in a death grip struggle with the old guard in the military and the party, again ring true with the present trends as China goes through a time of great change. But Hawksley's books are not all politics: his cast of characters are real people with testing moral dilemmas, and their predicaments affect you. So do the sensual love scenes. Ceremony of Innocence and its successor Absolute Measures are superb thrillers in every way.

Will Get New Scrapbookers Started.......2007-04-09
She gives very detailed instructions for sorting your photos and includes a worksheet to help with this. Good layout is explained and tips given for finding ideas for your scrapbook pages. The reader learns how to use scrapbooking tools like shape cutters and paper trimmers, how to mat, how to crop silhouettes and a variety of techniques.
What a terrific book this is with straight forward directions for new scrapbookers. Even experienced hobbyists will find some useful tips and ideas here (making a pocket page, encapsulating memorabilia, questions to improve journaling).
so helpful!.......2006-01-17
I had no idea where to start with scrapbooking. I had seen those scrapbooking magazines with very elaborate pages, but that seemed too advanced, and I really wanted to begin with something simple. This book was exactly what I needed. It takes you through the basics, tells you what supplies you will need, and gives examples. It's kind of like one of those "Dummies" books--it assumes you know basically nothing beyond what glue, scissors and paper are, so it starts right from square one.
The only complaint I had with this book was that now that it helped me get started scrapbooking, I can't seem to stop! :)

Need a jumpstart to get started scrapbooking?.......2003-04-10
I found this book very helpful. As a beginning scrapper, many of the magazines and idea books are overwhelming. The layouts in those books and magazines look so professional, and are time-intensive and costly to make. I really appreciated this book, in which Michele tells you what you need to know to get started, and helps you along the way.
She starts at the beginning - with how to choose supplies and how to sort your pictures. She takes you step-by-step and after reading this book, I guarantee any beginner will be thinking, "I CAN do this!"
I'm not saying this book is only for the beginner, however, there are quite a few different techniques described that would be helpful to more advanced scrappers as well.
I really enjoyed the author's pages and the fact that she was sharing her own family's photos made it that much more personal and real. The layouts in this book are do-able and realistic.
I would encourage wanna-be scrappers and newbie scrappers to not get hung up about the latest trends and doing things in a particular way. Your own style is what's right for you! There are a few basics to learn about using acid-free products, but I feel that there's too much pressure now to do fancy, "lumpy" and [extravagent] pages.
I highly recommend this book!
Great Ideas and techniques.......2002-10-13
I enjoy the book, it explain the basic of scrapbooking as well as giving easy technique to used. Each step is explained and illustrated. You will learn which materials to used and not used. How to prepare yourself to create a scrapbook for every occassion.

Book Description
Dividing an estate fairly may sound easy, but in fact very few people know how to do it. Because of this, an event that should be dedicated to remembering the good times and paying honor to the deceased often becomes a time of strife and divisiveness, resulting in bad feelings that can sometimes last a lifetime. Now, there is a resource that helps to avoid such conflicts. The Settlement Guide provides clear, useful advice about how to divide the family estate of the deceased parents in a fair and peaceful manner.
Customer Reviews:
The Settlement Game: How to Setle an Estate Peacefully and Fairly.......2006-10-21
Being one of five siblings I was not looking forward to settling our dad's estate. I needed real life, practical help! Reading the Settlement Game was an answer to my prayers! Here is a book written by an author who has successfully setteled her parent's estate using practical ideas; she shares these ideas, gives you guidelines and tools so that you actually have something to work with. I felt like I had a friend to help me. Giving each member in the family a copy of the book helped them to know what to expect too. The Settlement Game not only helped me with my father's estate but it will be a great guidline in organizing my own estate. I am defintely refering the book to friends. Each one of us will someday have an estate that will need to be settled; I recommed this book to anyone who cares about keeping peace and harmony in the family.
A practical, "user friendly", and informative guide to arranging a fair division of a departed loved one's estate.......2006-03-11
Confidently recommended reading, The Settlement Game: How To Settle An Estate Peacefully And Fairly by Angie Epting Morris is a practical, "user friendly", and informative guide to arranging a fair division of a departed loved one's estate. Readers will be provided with a proven system for dividing all items in an estate in a fair, peaceful manner; an analysis of personality styles that can help you avoid conflict; useful, practical advice for dealing with all details of an estate, from bank accounts to taxes; handy forms you can photocopy to keep track of all items and miscellaneous expenses.
Focusing on Peaceful Estate Settlement.......2006-02-23
After mother's death, my brother and sisters looked to me to begin the estate
settlement process. The Settlement Game: How to Settle an Estate Peacefully and Fairly has been like a life line to a drowning victim. Anyone can settle an estate, but to do so peacefully and fairly, is another matter. After reading the introduction, I
purchased copies for myself and my siblings. Our home is like returning to another era with beautiful antique furniture, dishes, and many of our old toys. This book outlines a system for distributing these items fairly and peacefully. I particularly liked the spiritual side that the author weaved into the beginning of the book. I
would recommend this book to anyone who is faced with settling an estate and
wants to make sure the process is done fairly and that family relationships remain
unharmed.
Excellent book.......2006-02-12
This book really hit the nail on the head. I would recomend a copy in every family home. I know of many family feuds over estates that this book could have helped.

As Gary Giddins makes clear in his introduction to Visions of Jazz, he's not attempting to draw a canonical line in the sand: "Everyone has his or her vision of jazz, and this is mine." Modesty aside, though, it's hard to imagine a critic with a more encyclopedic grasp of detail, or a more lucid, funny, and appropriately musical style. Weighing in at almost 700 pages, the magnificent Visions of Jazz consists of 70 profiles, beginning with a dual portrait of blackface pioneers Bert Williams and Al Jolson and concluding with the klezmer-infatuated clarinetist Don Byron. These sketches mingle musical, biographical, and cultural insights--indeed, one of Giddins's great gifts is to break down the very distinction between such categories. Yet Giddins is hardly an unhinged generalizer, and he loves to zero in on a particular chorus and disclose its charms on a bar-by-bar basis. The pinnacle of this musical microscopy occurs in his Dizzy Gillespie essay, with an almost biblical exegesis of 64 measures from the 1989 version of "Salt Peanuts." But even in these nuts-and-bolts passages, Giddins is always accessible, combining precisely the right proportions of edification and old-fashioned entertainment. The only problem with Visions of Jazz, in fact, is that it makes you so itchy and impatient to hear the music. Fortunately, Giddins has taken care of the problem by curating a companion disc called (you guessed it) Visions of Jazz. This isn't, it should be said, a predictable journey from one jazz milestone to the next. Instead he's assembled a delightfully idiosyncratic anthology, which testifies to the music's irresistible pulse and all-American parentage. --James Marcus
Book Description
Poised to become a classic of jazz literature, Visions of Jazz: The First Century offers seventy-nine chapters illuminating the lives of virtually all the major figures in jazz history. From Louis Armstrong's renegade-style trumpet playing to Sarah Vaughan's operatic crooning, and from the swinging elegance of Duke Ellington to the pioneering experiments of Ornette Coleman, jazz critic Gary Giddins continually astonishes the reader with his unparalleled insight. Writing with the grace and wit that have endeared his prose to Village Voice readers for decades, Giddins also widens the scope of jazz to include such crucial American musicians as Irving Berlin, Rosemary Clooney, and Frank Sinatra, all primarily pop performers who are often dismissed by fans and critics as mere derivatives of the true jazz idiom. And he devotes an entire quarter of this landmark volume to young, still-active jazz artists, boldly expanding the horizons of jazz--and charting and exploring the music's influences as no other book has done.
Customer Reviews:
A JOURNEY THROUGH THE PAST.......2007-05-14
Au unforgettable journey through the century written by one of the most open-minded and talented jazz journalist of our time! A MUST and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING!!!
Extremely Thorough History of Jazz!!.......2006-06-25
The main reason I read this book is because I have become a Billie Holiday fan in the last 2 years and up till now not a true lover of jazz. This book caught my attention when I did a search for books on Billie. There was about 6 to 7 pages on her but I never imagined how long this book would be! Not a bad thing though. I know it took me a long time to read as it is SO detailed and thorough. It was truly an education for me and I have a much greater apprecation for jazz! Gary Giddens is an exceptional author and is obviously a veteran writer and really knows his stuff! A truly well written book. Highly recommended for lovers of jazz and those of us who are just beginning to have a love for it!
Pure pleasure.......2006-04-17
Gary Giddins was only a name to me until Ken Burns's JAZZ series aired on PBS in early 2001. While I appreciated all the commentators in that remarkable series, it was the observations of Giddins that I began to eagerly anticipate night after night. He made me SEE music that I knew and loved but whose structure and complexity I had often been unable to grasp. Despite some jazz appreciation classes in college and haphazard collecting of old jazz records over the years, I had not gotten much past the "I know what I like" phase. His passion for music I was less familiar with led me on some rewarding treasure hunts.
I bought "Visions of Jazz" shortly after the conclusion of the Burns miniseries. I devoured it. I have turned to it time and again in the intervening years. Many critics overanalyze their subjects to the point where they suck the life out of the very thing they're attempting to illuminate. Giddins does not have that problem. His prose sings and swings with the elan of his beloved Sarah Vaughan.
Giddins's re-examination of the music of Ellington and Armstrong may seem at first blush to be superfluous; you may think you know all there is to know on that subject. But he proves that even the most accessible jazz figures and their music evolve from and operate within a such a complex idiom that periodic re-evaluation is necessary, and, if approached with respect for both the subject and the reader -- which Giddins has above all else -- it is most welcome indeed.
There are chapters in "Visions of Jazz" about musicians with whom I was completely unfamiliar. But I took a chance and read them, and wound up buying some Matthew Shipp recordings. It's that kind of book. You can take out as much as you put in.
As much as I appreciate Giddins's bone-deep love of jazz, his scholarship and wry humor, I also respect him for his fearlessness in making a case for, say, the inscrutable Cecil Taylor. But I am probably a big fan of someone who leaves Gary Giddins cold, and that's OK. The jazz tent is big enough for us all.
Why not 5 stars? The only "perfect" thing in jazz is Ellington's "Just a-Sittin' and a-Rockin."
Correction.......2005-11-21
To the previous reviewer: Mr Giddens was RIGHT. Coltrane's Impressions was based on BOTH pieces of music.
Sloppy, Gary, Very Sloppy.......2005-11-20
The source of Coltrane's 'Impressions' was (Morton) Gould's "Pavanne" and not Ravel's "Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte" Giddins, however, confuses them on page 484. (After all, what's a pavane among friends?)
As someone who has spent a career reviewing documents and spreadsheets, I have a simple philosophy: if there is one error, I assume that there are others. This cost Gary a star.
