    Book Description

Memoirs written by Kent D. Boklan.

These are not memoirs of an extraordinary life. They are the texture of a fabric woven of playfulness and of lingering regret.

This is a book about hair style, Vikings and sliced ham. It is about a girl dressed as a clown and it is about the sexuality of board games. These are the memoirs of a man who finally read Moby Dick, who played Little League baseball in New York, learned to tango in Boston, received a doctorate in Michigan, used Ulysses as foreplay in Nashville, and mispronounced a word in Sweden.

This is a life story: of leprosy, rare wines, the Ronettes, a nun - and of hasty retreats - of destiny and go-go dancing, laced corsets and Keats. It is a story of humor and eccentricity and the past. It's about the romantic ideal and passion - and love - and loss - and of great sadness.

    And it's about a search.

Ultimately, these memoirs are part of a quest for sensual redemption.

5 out of 5 stars Short Math Wizard in Lemon Muffin Sex Shock.......2001-03-31

This book is sometimes refreshingly witty (with plenty of scrumptious literary allusions for those lucky enough to pick up on them). It can also be refreshingly dim. It's almost obscenely colourful--Cherry Jell-O, lemon muffins, at least one seductress dressed like Ronald McDonald... It's very stylish, but touchingly honest. It's almost too real to be art. I give this project 3 stars out of 5 for typesetting but 7+ for a book that would have made Mark Twain laugh and Lord Byron wince.

5 out of 5 stars Memoirs of a Mathematician of Pleasure.......2000-05-23

In some ways this book is similar to _Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman_, in that it's written as a series of vignettes and anecdotes, and the author is a mathematician. But whereas in Feynman's book the stories were directly or indirectly associated with science, _Prometheus in Bondage_ has more to say about life - its joy and sadness, bizarre coincidence and tragic regret.

It's difficult to pin this book down to a single theme. In one sense it's about a lingering sense of loss, about "the road not taken," but this theme is blended together with humor and a bizarre kind of synchronicity. The author's quixotic search for a long-lost childhood friend, for instance, which forms the spiritual center of the narrative, is woven in and out of a much larger story involving Scandinavia,"The Guiding Light", Howard the Duck, Trisha Yearwood, and Jack the Ripper. The overall effect is something like a layer cake made by a mad baker, with alternating layers of sour and sweet, flour and salt.

Throughout it all, however, the book conveys a sense of poignance. It was impossible for me to read it and not think about my own life - the people I've known and the ones I wish I'd known better, the strange happenings and unavoidable tragedies, the unlikely adventures and the few perfect moments.

This book was an inspiration to me, to try to live a life of fewer regrets.

    5 out of 5 stars A journey in the life of a thirty-something's regrets.......2000-02-02

Kent Boklan is witty, literate, and brutally honest as he tells--through a series of non-chronological vignettes--about his search for an old friend, and the tale of his life's regrets.

Why should I care? As he puts it, "these are not the memoirs of an extraordinary life"--but they are memoirs that made me laugh, cringe, and made me think. They are memoirs that brought me back to my days in college, and memoirs that showed me a different view of a world--the view from the eyes of the eccentric Kent Boklan.

It's a very different kind of book, with several different layers to it--up to and including the title itself.

But if you read it, you won't forget it.

If you need legal knowledge, and can find a Nolo Press book that covers the topic, just buy it. You won't go wrong. This book is no exception.

An elderly family member is facing choices about whether to enter long term care. We needed to know all the ins and outs of various options, including Medicaid, Medicare, and veterans benefits. This book covers everthing of importance in clear, concise text.

One problem in a situation like this is that the "experts", like the case managers and social workers at hospitals and nursing homes, seldom have the time or incentive to tell you the whole story. It's up to you to figure out what your options are, and what protections you have. This book covers all of the bases in clear, understandable language.

Important note: several laws and regulations regarding transfer of assets and Medicaid/MediCal coverage eligability changed in early 2006. Make sure you understand the current laws. This book was published in late 2006 and is very up-to-date.

Like I said, another winner from Nolo.

5 out of 5 stars Prepping for Important Decisions.......2006-10-22

I'm glad to see a consumer guide on assisted living and long-term care. These are big life decisions and we need to make informed choices. The book will help you sort out options from long-term care, at-home care, organized senior residences, nursing facilities, Medicare and Veterans' Benefits, Medicaid and asset protection, estate planning and long-term care insurance.
I found the information quite helpful. I'd never even heard of a Geriatric Care Manager before. I liked that the book advised checking the state inspection report on a nursing facility.
The Resource Directory at the end provides lots of leads on:
    State Offices of Aging

5 out of 5 stars The New Settlement Cook Book.......2007-01-15

I have been using this cook book for 45 years. My mother bought it for me when I married. Her book was a previous printing and even told the new cook how to kill the chicken before cleaning and cooking it. My three daughters now use it in their homes. It has wonderful recipes that are plain, good cooking. It is the cook book I reach for first.

5 out of 5 stars Cookbook is Great!.......2006-11-10

I am very pleased with the prompt service on this order. I love the cookbook! I bought the book mainly as a historical source, but many of the recipes are wonderful. A real trip back in time. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent "basic" cookbook.......1998-10-26

I received this book as a gift about 15 years ago & it is by far my most often used. It was originally copyrighted in 1901 & has been revised many times, however many of the recipes still appear as they did then. Recipes range from the very simple (scrambled eggs or grilled cheese sandwiches) to exotic (Fondue Bourguignonne). It will take you from breakfast to an after dinner cordial - all from scratch. Recipes are easy to follow. Basic equivalents (i.e.2.20 pounds = 1 kilo) & substitutions make converting any recipe easy. And it contains much more than just recipes. There are menu planning ideas, freezing, canning & dehydrating charts, special diet recipes, & even a stain removal guide! This is a great book for the beginning cook or someone that needs a bit of everything all in one place.

That quaint saying is the keynote of this book from the turn of the century. It is truly the best basic cook book ever produced. From mayonaisse to dressing fresh kill, starting a fire in a stove to making cordials and candies from your berry crop, the quintessential Cook's book will provide you with a culinary education from the days before microwaves and even Barbie's dream kitchen. The food here is not haute cuisine but good honest food that can feed a family wholesome and hearty meals on a budget and teach you how to make it from scratch. It is a must have investment for anyone trying to live on a budget.

              5 out of 5 stars Treasure.......2000-02-05

This is the best German/American cookbook ever. It is a pity the recent revised edition does not measure up, as it lack many of the basic recipes here. I could not live without a copy. I have two, one in my upstate New York residence (given to me by my mother 58 years ago when I was in college) and one here in my Florida winter home (given to me by my son-in-law just a few years ago when I complained that my copy was falling apart from overuse). Has the BEST recipe for Sauerbraten ever (yes, the gravy is thickened with gingersnaps), and all the kuchen and pastry items that made my mother's and grandmother's kitchens redolent. If you can find a copy give it to your lover or whoever cooks for you, or just keep it for youself as I do. Other cookbooks may be useful, but this one is essential, and the recipes are simple and foolproof.

5 out of 5 stars The Settlement Cookbook.......1999-12-31

I used this cookbook as a child, when I cooked with my Mother and my Grandmother in the 1950s and 60s. It is a wonderful piece of American History, with recipes for things you might never have thought about. I reccomend this book to anyone who experiences the 'joy of cooking' and has a desire to keep American History alive and a part of the new century. A reprint or an edition from a used bookstore would be a treasured possession for any cook, a valuable gift.

                          Book Description

Gardening on the west coast can be a frustrating undertaking. The adverse weather and wildlife in our region can be enough to turn some off for good. With the right information in hand, however, gardening in our luscious region can be as rewarding as anywhere else on the planet. The key to obtaining that ever-elusive west coast green thumb is Mary Palmer's ABCs of West Coast Gardening.

Here is a gardening book encompassing the broad spectrum of plants available to west coast gardeners, with handy tips on adapting a garden to the extremes of this place we call home. By following her advice, Mary Palmer believes that "any piece of west coast ground can be made endlessly bountiful, productive, glorious and satisfying."

After six decades of gardening--running a nursery in Seattle, working as the gardening columnist for the Seattle Times and homesteading on a British Columbia Gulf Island--Mary Palmer has gained the experience to turn even the most infertile ground into a thriving garden of vegetables, flowers, trees, shrubs - whatever your preference may be. There are sections covering every aspect of creating a garden from initial soil improvements to final landscaping and beautification techniques.

This unique book offers tips on how to deal with the worst in west coast idiosyncrasies. Moss, deer and blackberries will become obstacles of the past. The only problem left to tackle may be finding enough friends to share the bountiful harvest.

                          5 out of 5 stars A Helpful book.......2004-10-08

I'm married to an American and was not familair with US laws and customs regarding working while pregnant and the maternity leave regulatons. This was the only book that I discovered to help me go through the process thouroughly. I recommend it to your readers quite highly.

                          5 out of 5 stars Finally!!.......2004-03-16

This book should be required reading not just for every woman who works through her pregnancy but also bosses and co-workers! The best part for me was how and when to tell your boss because that was the most nervewracking step. The author also offers great advice for dealing with all the symptoms we deal with while pregnant and gives advice for dealing with rude/insensitive comments from co-workers. (I know they mean well but if one more person rubs my belly, so help me!!)

I bet most people don't know half this information (both the legal stuff and the common sense info) and it would really help every office with pregnant (or planning to be pregnant) women. I want my HR department to have this in their office next to their health insurance binder (plus I wish I could sneak a copy anonymously to my boss.)

                          Book Description

For most of us, it was just another horrible headline. But for Deborah Spungen, the mother of Nancy, who was stabbed to death at the Chelsea Hotel, it was both a relief and a tragedy. Here is the incredible story of an infant who never stopped screaming, a toddler who attacked people, a teenager addicted to drugs, violence, and easy sex, a daughter completely out of control--who almost destroyed her parents' marriage and the happiness of the rest of her family.

"Honest and moving...Her painful tale is engrossing."

1 out of 5 stars Not As Good As Jonny Lydon's Book.......2007-10-12

I loved the book by johnny Lydon [Rotten: No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs]
I bought this book after reading Johnny Lydon's book but this one was a let down.
Sid Vicious was a hot looking punk star and lots of girls (me to) still love him.
I read a little of this book but it's mostly lady who gets pregnant and she complains and my kid drives me nuts and i wish i had a abortion, blah blah my kid's going to the funny farm, lol,if it wasn't so full of "I this" and "I that"and 'I wanted to go to college, but she was in my way" it could've maybe been a little interesting.
Whining and complaining just turned me off and I doubt I'll ever finish it. It's like "Diary of a whiny housewife".
If anybody knows where I can geta copy of Ann Beverly's Family Album please help.

1 out of 5 stars Morbid Story of Ignorance in Dealing with A Special Needs Child.......2007-10-05

This book is very dark and full of contradiction, written by a haunted, troubled author about her daughter who had deep emotional problems, a constant hunger for love , terrible insecurity. The child suffers from feelings of inferiority. A daughter who strove toward academic achievement to win approval of her parents.
The book unnecessarily documents the affair of the author with a married man.The author includes her lengthy and boring suspicions of her husband's infidelity as well as lots of filler on her troubled marriage.

Although the author writes deep feelings and thoughts, the book fails to fill in the entire picture. It leaves the reader frustrated that so many very pertinent issues are not addressed substantially. She provides psychiatric assessments of the child by a few psychiatrists, but all fails and it needn't have. And here's why...

The child is put on Thorazine by a qualified psychiatrist. The author takes the child off of it. Not giving psyche drugs a fair trial. The possibility of benefiting from this one medication is taken away from the child. I wondered how and why would a parent unjustifiably halt a very possible cure for her own child! She says it's because she found her daughter sleepy and groggy. "This wasn't my Nancy".

Initially all medications of this type have a very, very sedating effect, and the child wasn't on it long enough for the prescribing doctor to titrate the medication to the ideal dosage. This was a chance to live more normal life for the child and it was taken away from her by her own mother.
Enter Dr. Spungeon. Exit hope for the sick child.

                          I found this book irritating.

There's hope for us all. For Nancy too, had she been allowed medical treatment. I don't believe Ms. Spungeon had studied medicine or psychiatry, she discontinued Thorazine at the expense of the child's life. The psychiatric and medical providers did not fail the child. Her mother did !

This is a very morbid book, weakly written and very contradicting.

What could have been a story with a happy ending is a story which concludes in the murder of her ill child.

4 out of 5 stars And I don't want to live this Life..........2007-10-04

I love this book. I had a copy several years ago but lost it in a move. I was in college during the time period of Nancy Spungeon's death & remember wondering what happened to her. Mrs. Spungeon was honest with what life had been like with & for Nancy. I applaud her courage to write about her family's life & their pain.

                          3 out of 5 stars Blame game.......2007-09-16

Although Nancy had a rough first few days of life and was schizophrenic, it seems to me that her mother blames everyone except herself for her daughter's unmanageable behavior. From birth, the child had no discipline, because the Spungens couldn't stand to hear her have a tantrum. Well, boo hoo people that's part of being a parent - having to hear tantrums sometimes. Giving in only creates a monster; you have to have a stronger will than your child. They gave into her and would discipline their other two children but not Nancy. Her mother blamed everything on her, including her own infidelity and then wonders why all Nancy's anger was directed towards her. We had a schizophrenic in the family and as a child she never acted like Nancy, probably because unlike Nancy, she had discipline and structure in her life. This is what happens to your child, sick or not, when you don't discipline them at all. I think Nancy still would've been sick, but perhaps not the monster her mother describes in this book. I feel she also helped dig her daughter's grave by giving her money when she knew she was shooting up. She rails against the press exploiting her daughter and giving her a bad image, yet her own mother descibes what a monster she was in this book and profits from it. What makes her any different than any of the tabloids? Even though I didn't pity Mrs. Spungen and felt like she brought a lot of her child's behavior on herself by not disciplining her, I did enjoy the book. I like how it talks about the birth of punk rock and the beginnings of the sham band the Sex Pistols, a group of non-musically inclined kids who sold an image rather than great music, or even good music for that matter. Don't get me wrong, I love punk, but at least the Ramones looked the part AND could carry a tune.

                          3 out of 5 stars Sad reading.......2007-08-25

This book is very sad.The way the girl really had no one who understood her exept Sid Vicious is sad.He could not help her.
I have a friend in school like this and she is doing well. She has a good foster home with parents who take an interest in her and keep her on her medicine.
This book can't help anyone with a family member whose disturbed.I cant recomend it for anybody as a help book because they never figured out whats wrong with Nancy and it's just real painful to read.

                          Book Description

A Jewish family's desperate struggle to escape Nazi Germany, and how it illuminates the world's tragic abandonment of Europe's Jews during the Holocaust.

In this masterpiece of Holocaust literature, David Clay Large tells the wrenching story of Max Schohl, a German Jew who, in the midst of the Second World War, could not find a government that would allow his family to immigrate, despite wealth, education, and business and family connections. After repeated but fruitless efforts to gain entry first to the United States and then to Britain, Chile, and Brazil, Max died in Auschwitz and his wife and daughters were sent to hard labor in Wiesbaden.

Much has been written about the West's unwillingness to attempt the rescue of tens of thousands of European Jews from the hands of the Nazis; now David Clay Large gives a human face to this tragedy of bureaucratic inertia and ill will. The youngest daughter of the Schohl family, today a seventy-four-year-old widow living in Charleston, South Carolina, has opened her family's records to Large: a unique collection of family letters and other documents chronicling the experiences of the Schohls and those who tried to bring them to England and America. From these papers Large has fashioned a gripping and intimate narrative of one family's efforts to escape the Holocaust in Europe and the inadequate response from abroad.

There is irony in Leopold von Ranke furnishing the template for "And the World Closed Its Doors: The Story of One Family Abandoned to the Holocaust," by David Clay Large. Ranke, the great 19th Century German historiographer, inaugurated a scientific approach to history, insisting upon contemporary, firsthand sources. Large, a history professor at Montana State University and part-time San Francisco resident, takes this dictum to heart.
Ranke's exhortation prefigures the modern canons of "social history." Exploiting personal letters, family albums, diaries, census records, polling tallies, and the like, a diligent researcher will be able to piece together an accurate narrative, one ultimately more trustworthy than offered by after-the-fact, self-anointed chroniclers.
Large, whose previous work includes a definitive book on Berlin (2000) and a volume (co-authored with Felix Gilbert), that in its fifth edition is reputedly the greatest selling 20th Century European history text, takes advantage of a trove of letters exposing the increasingly despairing efforts by a German Jew, Max Schohl, to extricate himself and his family from the looming debacle.
In 1938, Schohl opened correspondence with Julius Hess, a cousin he had never met, in Charlestown, West Virginia. The objective was to enlist his relative's aid in emigrating to the U.S. Instead Max suffered a continuum of frustration owed to FDR's documented pre-war policy denying desperately sought asylum to the bulk of Europe's Jews. That Germany recognized Max Schohl's heroism during the First World War by bestowing various combat honors, and that Max reciprocated with unstinting patriotism adds mockery to the unrelenting Nazi drumbeat.
Alternating the letters between Schohl and his American cousin with a straight-forward telling of Roosevelt's tight-fisted diplomacy, Large does the rationale of social history proud: To reveal the effects of "great forces" upon individuals and the consequent actions of those individuals. Over half a decade, the Family Schohl attempted to emigrate, first to the U.S., then England, followed by Chile and Brazil, all to equal futility. Throughout, the reader knows the outcome - death at Auschwitz for Max, survival after forced labor for his wife and two daughters. But this hardly diminishes the suspense achieved through Large's taut prose and adept use of materials.
Max Schohl, a distinguished chemist, owned a successful firm on the outskirts of Frankfurt. Never eschewing his Jewish roots, Schohl became a pillar of community life in the village of Florsheim, where he was a chief employer of the townspeople. During the worst times of the 1920s economic collapse, he ran a soup-kitchen and paid his employees in hard currency in place of virtually worthless German marks, a barrel-full of which might purchase a loaf of bread.
Local esteem did Schohl and his family no good, however, during the infamous Kristallnacht. As with thousands of other Jews, thugs invaded the Schohl household on November 7, 1938, part of a Germany-wide attack. Shortly afterward, security officers took Max into "protective" custody and delivered him to Buchenwald concentration camp. Though his incarceration lasted but a month, the handwriting was on the wall, and Schohl redoubled his correspondence with Hess. Meanwhile, FDR contented himself with a perfunctory ambassadorial recall, and Hitler "billed" the Jews of Germany a billion marks as an "atonement fine" for cleaning up Kristallnacht debris.
A hard-hearted dilemma confronted the Schohls. On one hand, under U.S. immigration law Max had to demonstrate that he was not "likely to become a public charge," while on the other, the Alien Contract Labor Law of 1885, aimed at barring Chinese, prohibited would-be immigrants from securing jobs prior to entry. As Large declares acerbically, "The famed lines on the Statue of Liberty might have been rewritten to say: `To hell with your huddled masses, send me your prosperous and well-connected, your stockholders, remittance men, and prospective heirs.' "
Though the Schohls' predicament was replicated a thousand-fold across pre-war Europe, there is enormous value in hearing its firsthand voices. Not only are general lessons about bureaucratic impersonality on offer, but about national blindness, as well. Whether they are Salvadorans fleeing Death Squads or Liberians facing slaughter by run-amok revolutionaries, those with the power to open the nation's safe harbor must ask themselves to what extent policy is driven by racial stereotyping and narrowly defined self-interest.
