Book Description
Chinese dietary therapy is one of the most important aspects of Chinese medicine. The Tao of Healthy Eating illuminates the theory and practice of Chinese dietary therapy with emphasis on the concerns and attitudes of Westerners. Commonsense metaphors explain basic Chinese medical theories and their application in preventive and remedial dietary therapy. It features a clear description of the Chinese medical understanding of digestion and all the practical implications if this for day-to-day diet. Issues of Western interest are discussed, such as raw versus cooked foods, high cholesterol, food allergies, and candidacies. It includes the Chinese medical descriptions of 200 Western food and similar information on vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent summary of Chinese dietary therapy........2006-08-23
I recommend this book for all my patients. I keep a copy in my waiting room. Diet alone can often solve many health problems. Major topics covered include food allergies, candida and obesity. The author explains the meaning of Chinese medical terminology such as Liver Qi, Stomach Heat, and Kidney Yin deficiency with easy to understand metaphors.
Bob Flaws is one of the most prolific American authors on Chinese medicine. In this book he nails the age old argument between cooked vs. raw food for once and for all. Chinese dietary therapy can lengthen your life!
Food is life... truly.......2006-04-17
My journey into Chinese Medicine began with acupuncture. Soon I gravitated towards herbs and TCM in general. Now this book has introduced me to the importance of diet in medicine. Sadly, this aspect is atrociously neglected in western medical science. I had already started incorporating elements of diet therapy into my practice, with success. I then started looking for more instructional material on the subject. I purchased Bob Flaws' book and it has helped me learn new material and reinforce my own personal observations regarding diet. Not only do I heartily recommend this volume, I bought one for a patient of mine who is into organic farming!
Wonderful!.......2006-03-25
I received my purchase very quickly and the book was new. I am very happy!
Best book on healing I've seen in a while.......2005-10-21
In this world of fluff and sound bites, this book says it all without sacrificing space. For those that need the big picture in order to grasp a concept, this is your "in" into Chinese dietary rules, as well as being the answer to most of what ails us. This is the book you read BEFORE you go see an accupuncturist, and the one that keeps you going back to measure your progress.
It takes quite a book to knock my socks off, and this one left me standing naked. This is the book that I want to put the in the hands of all those people who get on the Atkins diet and within a year later hit a wall, from the excess of cold and damp foods. This book stresses the importance of balance and the problems that excess or lack of restraint can cause to health. Even though there's not a recipe in the book, it's the important book that brings understand to the quality of the energy of food, that's perhaps of greater value even than it's carb or protein content. After reading this book, I immediately took all the other Chinese books out of the bookcase combing them for recipes. With my internal lights switched on, the importance of various foods stood out and made sense as they never had before.
As Chinese medicine dictates, each food and emotion enters a channel in the body, not unlike a river. And like salmon that swim out to sea for years only to return to an exact spawning ground located in a tiny freshwater creek, so do our foods and emotions nourish our bodies in very specific and necessary ways. Excessive use of cooling foods is brought home in his section on Spleen Vacuity and dampness. For those dealing with long term food allergies, candida, and obesity (that should cover about 4 out of 5 people, if the current polls mean anything), there's salvation in this book. The quality of the food in creating a energy in the body is far more important to healing, than it's perhaps it's protein values. Reading on you'll find that even reducing protein due to inabsorbtion is probably lifesaving.
My big epiphany came as I realized that what The Tao of Healthy Eating suggests, is a heart happy diet. In fact, all that is suggested to reduce spleen dampness in Chinese remedial therapy, is exactly what produces a happy heart. And as I thumbed through the now famous by Ophrah's endorsement Perricone Promise, a book on Beauty and Longevity by an expensive MD, I had to laugh to myself. All the dietary recommendations of the Perricone diet, can be found within this tiny book of Bob Flaws, the Tao of Healthy Eating! I even renamed Perricone's book, the Happy Spleen diet book, with a new label that I made and taped to the cover. Because for those that chase beauty creams and wonder herbs, the shortest way to tighter, firmer wrinkle free skin, is simply this: Reduce stress and take care of your spleen. Nothing ages you faster than our fast food, modern, highly cooling and phlegm producing diets in solidifying and packing on the inches of girth. If truth matters as much as beauty, then learn the Tao of Healthy Eating and change your life, and your appearance too!
OK, but now I'd like to learn something about TCM nutrition..........2005-09-30
I recently ordered this book to learn something about TCM and nutrition. Given the title, the description, and the reputation of the author, it seemed like a good deal. But don't be misled by these facts without noticing that the book is only 114 pages without the index. The print is huge, the margins are wide--I'd have been laughed at by professors in college had I used such wide margins to extend the length of my papers. Not to mention all the headings and chapter dividers. The supposed grammatical errors didn't bother me, although they seem to suggest that the book was hastily written. Lots of interesting ideas are contained here, and Bob Flaws cites many of the principles I've read about elsewhere, but he fails to put these claims together in a coherent and logically sound way. For a guy who claims to be a doctor and therefore a scientific minded person, he fell far short of my expectations for reasonable arguments for and discussions of his observations. And for a guy who's written over 60 books, I expected more than brief summations, unfounded and startlingly unsupported claims (I really wanted this to be a great book on the subject, but his entire "conclusions" chapter is bogged and invalidated by gross misestimations and weak claims based on insufficient statistics.). Perhaps I should have realized that having written 60 books is perhaps an indicator of the kind of thought and organization being put into each individual work. Boy, this is sounding really negative, so I'll say this. I DID like the last part of the book: lists of common foods, the merdian through which they're absorbed, their post-digestive temperature, and general effects according to traditional chinese medicine. Overall, this book is a very short, very brief introduction to TCM nutrition. But just like watching a suspensful movie on an old TV that keeps fuzzing in and out, at the end of this one you're going to wish you'd just sprung for the model with rabbit ears.

The Tao is an empty bowl, used but never filled. When the Tao is your way of eating, you will never be hungry or overfull.

Hate Diets, Love this Book.......2006-02-16
I HATE diets because they transform eating into an exercise in deprivation and discipline, obsession and distraction, failure and self-hatred. I LOVE this book because it transforms eating into self-discovery, pleasure, adventure, the freedom to feel, savor and experiment. Whenever the thought of eating, or not eating, becomes stressful for me, I re-read a few sections to remind myself of the sort of relationship that I have discovered I want to have with food, and to re-establish that relationship.
Bringing Awareness to the Dinner Table.......2006-02-02
Elizabeth Terp offers a new version of the Tao Te Ching specifically designed for those of us whose unconscious approach to eating undermines our health and self-image. The book is packed with insight, and guides us toward the innate wisdom of healthy habits. Concise, charming, and deeply thoughtful, this book is a real gem.
A LOVELY READ.......2006-02-01
THIS BOOK INTEGRATES ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY WITH CURRENT DIETARY CONCERNS AND PROVIDES NEW IDEAS FOR HOW WE APPROACH OUR DAILY FOOD INTAKE. IT IS SUPPORTIVE, SOOTHING AND AN EASY READ WITH LOVELY VISUAL ALLUSIONS CONTAINED IN THE COMMENTARIES.
IT IS, AS I SAID IN THE TITLE, A LOVELY READ, EVEN IF ONE WERE NOT SEARCHING FOR "THE DIET".
Less is More.......2005-10-04
If you are looking for a diet book, then this isn't it. The main message of the book is that in order to gain a peaceful relationship with food, you have to ignore all the outside influences and observe your own reactions, both positive and negative, to the foods you eat. This book provides good "food for thought" and has been helpful for me in considering a new perspective to overcome my food obsession and overeating tendencies. It is written in a daily meditation format with the ideas coming from the Tao and applied to our ways of eating. I found an overall theme about food and eating is that when in doubt, leave it out. You will be more fulfilled with less.
Book Description
How is Beijing cuisine different from Szechwan, Shanghai, Cantonese, or Taiwanese cuisines? Did you know that the famous "Peking Duck" originated in the 1850's? You can find out in this delightful addition to Wei-Chuan's "Chinese Regional Cuisine" series which brought together in one volume the unique tastes and flavors of Northern China.
Through the course of seven hundred years, Beijing was the capital of the Liao, Kin, Yuan, Ming, and Ching dynasties. The diverse flavors owe their uniqueness to the cultural influences of the conquering Han, Manchurian, Mongolian and Moslem people. Being the ancient capital and cultural center, Beijing cuisine has integrated the essence of the imperial court banquets and Northern tribal dishes. These combinations of various seasonings and ways of cooking; quick stir-frying, roasting, stewing, produces the distinctly unique flavors and one of the most favored of Chinese regional cuisines.
Customer Reviews:
Very fatisfied with this recipe.......2007-08-04
This is the best cooking book I have ever bought. The cooking process is easy, but the flavor is real and very tasty! Now, it seems everytime if I want to cook something special and delicious, I will go referring to this book, and the result had never made me disappointed. I love it very much.
Delightful imperial recipes.......2002-12-29
I received this installment of the Wei Chuan cookbook series for Christmas and immediately tried out a couple of the recipes. I tend to favor the spicier Chinese cuisines, but was pleased with the Beijing style. Try the coriander lamb and the chicken and walnuts in bean sauce--the combination of flavors from all over Asia is apparent in these recipes and makes for a fabulous taste sensation(note: I had to use HaiXian/aka Hoisin sauce instead of the bean paste called for in the chicken/walnut dish--worked just fine). The recipes in this book are easy to make and definitely rewarding for your efforts. I recommend giving Beijing cuisine a try, especially if you like fragrant Chinese food and want a hint of Indian influenced flavors.

Uniting the riotous colors of kimono silks with age-old Japanese motifs, acclaimed quilt artist Kumiko Sudo adds her own unique way with design to produce exceptional, eye-catching quilts. Inspired by such traditional themes as the sea, Kabuki and Noh theatre, cherry blossoms, and the imperial court, Sudo's explosive quilts are at once dynamic and serene, imbued with a paradoxical balance of tranquility and chaos, calmness and vibrancy--harmony and hurricanes. The artist meditates on the imaginative origins of each quilt, and along with color photos of her creations, she treats us to pattern diagrams, templates, and brief instructions for seven of her extraordinary quilts. --Amy Handy
Book Description
The 24 sensational quilts demonstrate Kumiko's incredible range. Her brilliant, bold colors--reminiscent of the striking colors found in a Japanese kimono--capture the spirit of imperial Japan, while her use of delicate shades and intricate patterns remind the reader of the tranquillity of Japanese gardens. She describes how she uses color and line to explore themes, to create context, and, ultimately, to jolt a response from her viewers. Features include 10 all-new quilt patterns with step-by-step instructions and guidance on color choices and fabric analysis.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring..........2001-06-25
The small quilts in this book are inspiring because of their uniqueness. All of her designs are done using applique techniques and she uses silks for most of her quilts. Each of her quilts has a poem or story that she's written or referenced that adds to the beauty of the design. That said, this book is not for the beginning quilter since directions are somewhat vague. There is a gallery quilts, in addition to a section of patterns for small (ie 15 x 17") wallhangings. It is not at all a book for one interested in new techniques. However it would still be great addition to any quilter or fiber artists library as a reference and inspiration.

Great, Insightful Book! .......2006-05-31
I would highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to lead a healthier lifestyle. It has great insight and recommendations for better living. Through out the ding dongs and fruit rollups and start reading this book!
This book is changing my life........2003-04-19
Finally, I think someone has gotten through to me to get me to eat healthier. The motivation? Avoiding cancer and other diseases. Dr. Slaga breaks it down simply: some foods cause cancer, while others help prevent it. Which would you rather eat? He itemizes the different vitamins, minerals, supplements etc. that fight disease, and explains how they work within the body to do so. He provides a list of "super foods," the foods that are the absolute best for you, so you can concentrate on those if you'd like. And he provides a bunch of recipes incorporating his recommended foods so you can work them into your lifestyle. This is not a diet book! This is a book that can help you live a healthier and longer life, if you just listen to Dr. Slaga's message. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Since I read this book, I have been incorporating items like soy, flaxseed oil, fish oil, nuts and dried fruits, etc., into my diet, and I look forward to reaping the results.
Book Description
They're young. They're sexually active. And they play their own instruments.
In a time when overproduced boy bands and teen sensations are saturating the music market, the boys of blink-182 are a breath of fresh air -- proving that sugarcoated acts aren't the only thing that can get nominated for MTV's "Video of the Year."
Blink-182 Tales from Beneath Your Mom is chock full of the outrageous band's behind-the-scenes antics, juvenile sense of humor, and never-before-published photos. Bandmates Mark Hoppus, Tom Delonge, and Travis Barker join Mark's sister, Anne, in this exciting tell-all book about life on the road and backstage.
From their early days jamming in Tom's garage, to dominating MTV's TRL, to going multiplatinum with their album Enema of the State and being voted "The Sexiest Rock Band" by Teen People, fans can at last get an inside look at the video-streaking, toilet-joke-living, self-styled punk/pop band that has all the kids asking, "What's My Age Again?"
Customer Reviews:
SWEET!!! (like apple flavored lollipops!).......2007-01-19
Tales From Beneath Your Mom is an AWESOME book! It takes you through the history of Blink 182 step by step. By the end you feel like you grew up with Mark, Tom, and Travis. It's also hilarious! Full of Tom's famous jokes and pranks. Fun facts and stories! The pictures are another treat. Lots of old pictures of Blink 182 that not many have seen and pictures of Blink 182 backstage passes (all very fun and juvenile!). I absolutely love this biography! I love Blink 192 to death and any Blink 182 fan should own this book. It's very, very cool. It's the BOMB! It makes you wonder "what went wrong?" and how could their band and friendship fall apart. Anyways, get this book! It'll complete your life!
A must have.......2006-02-20
This is one of the only books I own. It's also one of the few books I've read all the way through.
AWESOMENESS!!.......2005-06-08
This Book is Awesome!! Must read It no matter what even if u dont like Blink 182! it was funny and informing! READ IT!!!!
thumbs up!!.......2005-04-22
Tales From Beneath Your Mom, the biography of blink 182 was a fantastic book. It tells you blink's history from start to finish clearly, and vividly. The facts are truthful and thorough from Anne Hoppus, who happens to be Mark Hoppus' sister (bassist) of blink 182. The book is told from Anne's perspective in every which way. From the band to their jokes to the potty humor, pranks and tours, Anne is descript about it all.
I enjoyed the fact that Anne included quotes and blurbs from Tom, Mark, Travis & even Scott (blink's first drummer) themselves, as well as unseen photos from early on in their years (so cute!!). If you are a big music fan or a fan of the boys of blink in general, this would be the book for you to read.
The best punk band ever!!.......2004-06-03
All I can really say is this book is awesome and you should read it if you are a true blink 182 fan.
