Customer Reviews:
An atypical account of an American POW in the hands of the Japanese.......2007-01-29
The author is a former American soldier who was stationed in the Philippines when the Japanese attacked. He was among those who retreated to the Bataan peninsula and he eventually moved out to the fortress on Corregidor Island. Captured by the Japanese, he spent the rest of the war as a POW. After his initial stay in the Philippines, he was transported to the Japanese main island where he remained until the Japanese surrender ended the war.
His account is very matter-of-fact and unlike most other stories of American captives under the Japanese, he often speaks highly of his captors. At first the treatment was very brutal, but later there were acts of kindness from the Japanese guards and some civilians. He received fruit and extra food in exchange for work favors and was impressed by many aspects of Japanese culture. His account of how the Japanese guards piled their weapons in an orderly manner and then marched out in military precision when the war was over is recounted with grace. He seems to have little animosity towards those who were once "the enemy."
The bulk of his wrath is reserved for President Roosevelt and the highest members of the American military. He believes that Roosevelt deliberately allowed Pearl Harbor to be attacked, citing the widespread notion in the military that it was where the Japanese would attack if it ever came to war. He also will never forgive Roosevelt's deviousness in telling the American defenders on Bataan to fight on because "help is on the way", when he knew that there was no way that they could be rescued or reinforced. It was a cynical ploy by the American planners to keep them fighting so that the Japanese would be delayed as long as possible.
I don't believe that Roosevelt deliberately allowed Pearl Harbor to be attacked. At the time, few people believed that a task force the size that the Japanese mustered could sail all the way across the Pacific without being detected. In fact they were, the people on the ground just didn't recognize it for what it was. However, I give Sabotta his due, he did his duty and fought till it was useless to fight on, so his right to bitterness is earned.

A total of 3.9 million people in the United States and more than 170 million worldwide are estimated to have hepatitis C, a viral infection that causes inflammation, injury, and ultimately scarring of the liver. Each year, 8,000 to 10,000 Americans die from liver failure due to hepatitis C--the rest live with it. Living with Hepatitis C presents the facts simply and positively, and removes the misconceptions. For example, this type of hepatitis is not sexually transmitted--if you have hepatitis C, your partner is in no danger from having sex with you, but might get infected by using your razor. You'll learn how infection takes place (blood to blood), how to keep your loved ones safe, how your liver works when it's well, 10 danger signs of liver disease, nutrition guidelines, emotional challenges, financial issues, treatment options, and research trends.
Gregory Everson, Director of Hepatology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, explains hepatitis C with clarity, optimism, and compassion--and without the "docspeak" common in many health books. Coauthor Hedy Weinberg and other people with hepatitis C tell about their experiences frankly, bringing a personal flavor to this helpful and informative book. --Joan Price

Survivor's guide for Hep C.......2007-08-26
This book is an excellent resource for anyone diagnosed with Hepatitis C.
The American Liver Foundation continues to keep people informed and up to date on new treatment protocols.
Starting to live again.......2001-07-13
I was recently diagnosed as having hepatitis c. The immediate effect was shock and disbelief. I was under the mistaken impression that the way a person contracted hep c was by IV drug abuse or a tainted blood transfusion. This threw me for a loop since the only blood I had ever recieved was in 1950 and 1959 and I had never abused any drugs, I had no idea this virus existed back when I had recieved blood. I was afraid to tell my family what I had and therefore had no support. After reading this book not only did I have more information with which to approach my family but an idea of what to expect in my life from here on out. It is seldom one finds an information type book that is written in a way that makes it an easy read but this one falls in that category. Even those in the mid adolescent years would have no problem reading and understanding the information. I have already purchased a copy of this book to give my daughter when I tell her that I have this disease.
This Book Is My Hepatitis C Bible.......2000-12-15
This is one of the most comprehensive Hepatitis C books available. Being written by a patient and Heptologist, it seems easy to understand. I'm on the Transplant List with encephalapathy and have a hard time remembering what I'm told at the Drs., or where I put the paper I wrote it down on. I find the information available in this book is like taking the Dr. home with me. I relate to alot of the patient stories and am encouraged by those who are now post transplant. I spend my time helping others with Hepatitis C on the Internet and will definitely be reccomending this book.
Beyond Just Surviving.......2000-05-02
This comprehensive book is a blessing! It decodes medical terminology and the latest treatments and research into plain English. The quotes from actual patients on different therapies and in different stages of the disease really make you feel like you're not alone. With explanations of the most current research on both traditional and alternative treatments, this book clearly stands out from the others on this topic.
Misleading Western Medicine Biased View.......2000-02-08
This book has overlooked the role of alternative therapies such as acupuncture and herbology in the treatment of Hepatitis C. Additionally, they do not even mention the wonder herb, milk thistle. They only put negative connotations to anything that isn't good-old-US approved. The chapters on emotional and nutritional care are far from complete as they lack depth and advocate only a small fraction of what is available to those who suffer. Don't waste your money on this one!

Book Description
Written to inspire courage in those daunted by wartimes shortages, How to Cook a Wolf continues to rally cooks during times of plenty, reminding them that providing sustenance requires more than putting food on the table. M. F. K. Fisher knew that the last thing hungry people needed were hints on cutting back and making do. Instead, she gives her readers license to dream, to experiment, to construct adventurous and delicious meals as a bulwark against a dreary, meager present. Her fine prose provides reason in itself to draw our chairs close to the hearth; we can still enjoy her company and her exhortations to celebrate life by eating well.
Customer Reviews:
What a read!.......2007-05-25
Ms. Fisher was writing in Europe during WW2; due to wartime rationing and shortages, the wolf seemed literally to hover near the door. Fine, she says, a wolf! Let's eat him!
Ms. Fisher shows the best of the chin-up attitude one hopes we would all be disposed to display in hard times. She was in Europe during the war, and suffered the hardships thereof; she writes from a love of the food she had been exposed to before shortages, but her writing is ABOUT the food she can obtain rather than what she can't. She writes wittily, even charmingly about how to live on practically nothing and how to do it with an eye to health and nutrtion, and flavor and enjoyment! Even in the 40's Ms. Fisher was aware that everybody needs to eat plenty of vegetables; even then she was aware that even sparse rations would be "better for you" if the food could look and taste appealing.
The book was later edited and annotated by the author, and this edition includes those notes.
One comes to see that in writing during wartime Ms. Fisher wrote from the "furnace of affliction" indeed and and that this book is as much a statement of philosophy as a guide to cooking and eating when food is sparse. One's attitude toward food, family, friends can be shaped to something resembling common sense and love of beauty whether a war is raging around one or no. The notes she added years later indicate that she still agreed with her earlier thoughts, in the main -- something had solidified, something had crystallised, in her thinking.
A must for the shelf if one likes to think about food in more than a visceral and immediate way.
This is it! The First Edition of Wolf!.......2006-09-23
The famous and funny book by MFK Fisher. I love the title alone. (meant to refer to the wolf at the door!) Recipes & prose and graciousness - she wants everyone to live well, no matter the situation. This is the very rare first edition, grey covers underneath the dustjacket. Someone is going to be very lucky. Highly recommended.
Unusual writing for unusual times.......2001-05-02
M.F.K. Fisher was a superb writer. And she lived in "interesting times" in Europe and California. How to Cook a Wolf pitted her inate love of food and cuisine against some severe times when money might be short or food was rationed. Her strange sense of humor and practical outlook are interesting; for example, she gives a recipe for a sludge to keep body (if not soul) alive. The instructions begin with borrowing 50 cents to buy the ingredients; hamburger, wilted vegetables. The resulting mush can be used as a nutritious dog food, or a staple to survive on. She even claims it can be quite acceptable fried as scrapple, but then you'd have to have some cooking fat (and even that could be hard to come by.)
In these times of plenty, it's hard to relate to this book except to read Fisher's ideas and fantastic prose; the section on "Sue" (really California artist and etcher Nel Coover) who survived and entertained her guests with wild ice plants, seaweed and stolen eggs and potatoes is captivating.
If you have never read any M.F.K. Fisher, start with "The Measure of My Powers", but if you have read her, and if you have developed a taste for her marvelous writing, this is one of her famous works that is unique and interesting.
Overrated as a food writer?! Underrated as a writer!.......1998-04-21
I can't vouch for her recipes but I can speak for her prose. I picked up this book for pure entertainment and found it. Fisher's conversation is elegant, entertaining, and educational, and her advice is at times amusing, at times timeless.
MFK Fisher is somewhat over-rated as a food writer.......1998-01-28
MFK Fisher is somewhat over-rated as a food writer. This book has interest because it was written when food rationing was in force due to WWII. Rationing reminded her of other experiences of deprivation, which is the theme of the book. So-so writing, but a really good recipe for gingerbread. If you like gingerbread, this recipe alone is reason to read the book.

Book Description
It's time for Honey Maloo to go to school, but she does not want to leave her mom. She tries everything to stay home, from sneaking off the school bus to pretending to be sick, but finds there is no way to avoid school. Honey's mom, her teacher, the music teacher and friends help her to get involved with school lessons and activities so that Honey learns that school can be fun!
Separation anxiety is common in young children and can make going to school a trial. This charmingly illustrated tale teaches children coping skills and reminds them that they can love, even miss, their parents and still enjoy school. In addition to providing specific tips for both children and parents, I Don't Want to Go to School offers a great tool to open a dialogue with an anxious child.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent source for little ones!.......2007-01-05
My daughter started to have issues with separation anxiety when she began first grade. After starting the new year, she started refusing to go to school and would cry for hours. It broke my heart to see her this way, and after speaking to her teacher and vice principal, we agreed that it would take some time and that we would all have to work together. I saw this book online and decided to give it a try. First of all, it is geared towards children. The pictures, as well as the story, helped my daughter relate to the main character. We even tried some of the things that the character did to help her feel secure in school. My daughter would bring a picture of us to school, or bring a small teddy bear to look at when she started to feel sad. We also cut a piece of one of my shirts and she would use it to not only dry her tears, but to carry in her pocket. In addition to the book, my daughter did see a child psychologist twice. Although it was a long and tough struggle, I am happy to say that it is now 4 months later and she is doing very well and has adjusted to first grade. What a relief! I recommend this book for those of you who find yourself in the situation that I was in. It is a great supplement to have while working towards helping your child gain that inner strength and courage. I advise you to use as many resources as you can.
Cute & Helpful.......2006-11-11
My children really liked this book - it is sweet. I would recommend it if your child is having a little school anxiety.
It's About Time..........2005-12-05
It's about time that a book such as this one hit the shelves!! I work in the public school system and see 'separation anxiety' on a daily basis. Not only do children identify with the main character (what a cutie-pie!), the helpful tips in the book provide parents with the support they need to 'let go'and. I've noticed that many of the foster children in our program enjoy reading this book. All of the adults at my school have purchased copies of this book for their children, as well as, for their families. I can't wait to read more books by this author!!!!!
Wonderful Book for Children Who Miss Their Moms! .......2005-10-12
I have a 3 year-old daughter who had a hard time adjusting to leaving me and going to pre-school. I have read "The Kissing Hand", a sweet book, but this one is much more specific to the feelings that children can have when they don't want to leave their Moms. My daughter loved the Honey Bee character. The book helps children to help themselves and it tells you exactly how to do it. The illustrations are adorable, too!
Like a Security Blanket!.......2005-10-12
I have four children. My youngest started kindergarten this year and was extremely nervous about it. He's very clingy and very used to just being with me. Although he had attended pre-school, the idea of going on a bus to a "big school" frightened him. I heard about this book from a friend of mine and read it to my son a few days before he started school. He really enjoyed it and asked if he could bring it into school with him!The teacher read it to the class and raved about it too. This is definitely a beautiful and bright way of easing a young child's anxiety (and mom's anxiety!) about going off to school.

Book Description
I TALK TO THE ANIMALS presents a collection of amazing transcriptions of Barbara's conversations with owners and pets which have become lost, have health problems, or are ready to die. She has found that animals have many things to say about life, including their frustrations, fears and concerns which are often clues to behavior problems or depression. Pet owners and other animal lovers will be moved by these enjoyable and enlightening vignettes. CHRISTINA: Okay. My dog's name is Mattingly. We call her Mattie for Matt. My first question - is she okay?
BARBARA: Okay. Now, this is a dog that has passed on.
CHRISTINA: Yes.
BARBARA: All right. I just want to tune into the energy of Mattingly as you knew Mattingly, so we know we're talking about the same one. I'm picking up about a medium size animal. One that was very interested in you and very responsive to you and was always eager to please, was always wanting to do as you asked, always asking for commands. "What would you like me to do? I'd like to please you. What would make you happy?"
CHRISTINA: That's Mattingly.

The best kind of confirmation that a reading is accurate and useful is from letters after an owner makes decisions considering the information that was gained from the reading, as it seen in the following letter I received:
"Dear Barbara: I want you to know that I called John Lyons' Resistance Free Training Riding on Sunday and a woman came out and worked with my horse for three days. She is like a different horse now. You were right. The saddle was not fitting correctly, as it was pinching her and was causing her pain in the withers and her shoulder. My thanks - you where so incredibly on target with this."

Customer Reviews:
I Talk to the Animals.......2001-03-13
I am Lisa, and Arrow was my beloved horse who Barbara Morrison writes
about in two places in her book. Barbara's gifts as an animal psychic
are astounding. She is a gifted and "real" clairvoyant, and
she is profoundly adept at helping the animals and the people she
communicates with. I called her for emergency help as my great horse
lay dying. I was frantic for help and she was there with great
compassion and gentleness, and helped Arrow and me through his final
hours. She said he had a vertebrae which was snapped or broken, and he
did...he couldn't get up and he was ready to pass on. I was
heartbroken. Later last summer Barbara did a session for me. She
indicated there was a new horse, young and chocolate brown with white
on her legs, coming to me in the spring of 2001. She said this was a
gentle horse and would raise her hoofs in greeting, and remind me of
Arrow. Months later in a "chance" encounter with a Morgan
horse breeder, I was introduced to the young mare with the white on
her legs. She trotted over to the pasture fence and stopped and
immediately raised her hoof in her sweet greeting. This is one
example of Barbara's powerful psychic gifts. She is authentic, very
humble and very totally sincere and for real. I highly recommend this
book to everyone who wants to be gifted a glimpse into the animals
psychic's world. I can say truely she made the worst heartbreak of my
life bearable, and gave me strength to honor the horse that I loved so
dearly. She gave me vision into Arrow's spirit and his presence after
he left the 33 year old body he lived in. I can't say enough about
Barbara Morrison or her book! Buy it, read it, and contact her for a
session about you and your animals...you will not regret a moment of
that experience, I promise!
Fantastic at psychic readings.......2001-03-12
I have read this book that Barbara has written and have also had the opportunity to meet her and have her tell me about my animals both present and past. She did a fantastic job and is very in tune with the animal as well as the owner. I highly recomend this book to everyone who owns or has owned an animal. It is fantastic!!!!

Customer Reviews:
great buy great book.......2007-01-06
I have this book, not only are there plenty of songs in the book, but they are a bit more difficult. You are not getting the way too easy boring version. I highly recommend this book.
Thus far the best published sheet music collection.......2006-11-16
I have several books of Tori Amos music, but I bought this for some of the harder to find pieces. Overall, this is my favorite book and the one I play out of the most. I have played piano for a few years but am not very skilled - however I can work my way through most of the music. Some of the songs require more work (Caught a Lite Sneeze, Space Dog) and some like Mother, Putting the Damage On and Winter are pretty easy. I play several instruments and have been able to adapt the music easily to guitar and flute. The only thing I haven't really liked is that since Tori Amos supposedly never writes down music, this doesn't translate to printed versions of audio recording. However, I have seen her live many times and every time each song changes, so a written version of any song is given to improvisation.
To Start..........2004-08-28
I have been teaching myself piano for about 8 or 9 months, so am relatively inexperienced; thus, i expected i wouldn't be able to play anything in this book, and had ordered it for future use. I was wrong, however, and am actually able to play bits and pieces of several songs. 'Winter' is pretty simple, though, for me, the accompaniment took a bit getting used to. 'Professional Widow' is also fairly easy. Point being, even beginners can use this book. The transcriptions, as said, have been dumbed-down for many songs, but a talented enough pianist can improvise, anyhow. I recommend this book to get started on, it's really wonderful!
fun to play but something's missing..........2003-11-20
I love to play piano and I was thrilled to get Tori's book of sheet music. However I was disappointed to see that a lot of the piano music had been modified from her original work. Many arrangements of popular music tend to incorporate the vocals and other instruments into the piano piece (in order to hear the melody or another aspect of the song) and this is the case with these arrangements too. Although sometimes I agree that doing this may make the piece sound better when played alone (without vocals or other instruments) I wish they would have note-for-note what is actually in the original version of Tori's songs.
Great.......2002-09-27
I am not a musican, but I am a Tori fan. I just love to collect. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
"Ailments of My Mind" is a collection of contemporary and free-style poetry that offers an intimate and often heartbreaking portrait of life, love and tragedy. Inspired by the loss of his mother, Timm Dolley delves deep into the roots of his past to decipher the beauty of passion and the pain of separation as he struggles to find peace in life after death. From disposition to revelation, he confronts his homosexuality, death, stereotypes, theology and modern-day society while exuding a charm and crassness that is both quirky and disarming.

Product Description
This is a spiral-bound book of mostly fan writings inspired by Tori Amos'music and her major support to The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN). The book has many quotations from Tori Amos scattered throughout among the many heartfelt stories, male and female, relating to the subject and Tori Amos.
Book Description
Everyone knows the name of Anne Frank but few people remember anything about the people who sheltered her. Who were the rescuers and what motivated them to risk their lives for persecuted Jews? Clearly such people deserve to be remembered and honored. And clearly an understanding of their motivations may help us cultivate such behavior in our own day. Focusing on such "righteous Christians," Tec, herself a survivor helped by Poles, vividly recreates what it was like to pass and hide among Christians and what it was like for Poles to rescue Jews. Concentrating on Poland, the Nazi center for Jewish annihilation, Tec amassed a vast array of published accounts, unpublished testimonies, and interviews, yielding case histories of over 500 Polish helpers, preserving for posterity the heroism of such people, and filling a significant gap in our knowledge of the Holocaust.

Debunks Polonophobic Stereotypes Regarding Jews.......2001-11-15
In addition to 6 million Jews, approximately 3 million Polish gentiles were also murdered by the Germans during World War 2. Poland was the only country with an automatic death sentence for the slightest assistance to Jews. Polish-Jewish author Nechama Tec does a valuable service in this study of Poles who assisted Jews. When it comes to analyzing the "why" of such assistance, however, her book has the shortcoming of using too small a sample for this purpose. Nevertheless, her book is both inspiring and informative. It is clear that Polish assistance was the norm, if only because many Poles were involved in the rescue of a single Jew. Tec's book is also a powerful rebuke to much educational Holocaust material, which either virtually ignores Polish aid to Jews, or even maliciously portrays Poles as being in cahoots with the German Nazis.
Inspirational book fills a gap in Holocaust history.......2001-02-21
Although there are other books that cover the subject of Christians who helped Jews during the Holocaust, this one filled some gaps that the others didn't - to my mind, anyway. The author, Nechama Tec, looks at people who helped for all the right reasons - and also those who helped in spite of their semitism. She tries to find the "why" behind all the altruism and also explores how class and politics affected the decision to help the Jews. I found the writing style to be a bit dry for my taste at times but I still couldn't stop reading this book. Recommended!
Truly remarkable book.......2000-12-14
If you want to discover the the true humanity that lies hidden through all classes of society then this book is the one to read. It views the holocaust from the noble within humanity and helps one to think about what their own responses would be in a similar circumstance. Besides this, the writer is very skilled and a pleasure to read.
