      Book Description

Although not the first to produce a so-called automobile, Charles Edgar Duryea shares credit with his brother Frank for significant contribution to an American-made, gasoline powered vehicle, produced in Springfield, Massacusetts, in 1893. This book represents the first attempt at anything like an in-depth study of Charles Duryea. Herein is unfolded the story of a farm boy, mechanically minded, who went on to build "motor wagons" in five American cities at various times in his checkered career.

5 out of 5 stars What is really important? A name or a subject?.......2007-03-12

Unfortunately Ms. F. Gabriele ("gabrielefrank2001") did not get the point. The author of "Chi Kung - Way of Power" explain in his book that the subject he presents may be named Chi Kung, or Da Cheng Chuan, or even Zhan Zhuang. In Mantak Chia's "Tao Yin" book, Mr. Chia explains that the names of these amazing exercises may be Tao Yin, Tao-In, Daoyin, Chi Kung, Qiqong, Qi Gong, including at least nine additional variations. So, what is the point?

The point are the exercices. Mr. Chuen's book "Chi Kung - Way of Power" is very good, very well explained and, most important, will be good for those searching for health care and better life quality. Undoubtedly, the book presents the advanced exercices introduced in the authors previous books "The Way of Energy" and "The Way of Healing". I have been practicing Chi Kung exercices for over 5 years and the results are great. Not a single headache during the lest 3 years, a flu, nothing. Practicing the exercices will help for faster recovering of jetlags as well. The overall health is greatly improved. To me, a morning practice stimulates my mind for a day of work; a final day practice (before the dinner) relaxes for a good sleeping night. What can be better? A hint: daily practice is very important. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Great supplement to your Internal Training.......2006-12-26

Like all martial arts book, this is a good supplement to your current training. This book focuses mostly on the very basics of qigong and internal martial arts-- standing. It has a very in-depth look at various standing exercises and a decent curriculum for the exercises. I wished there were more pictures to describe some of the exercises though. But the descriptions were extremely clear and I would recommend this to anyone who is practicing qigong or martial arts in general.

I have been doing the positions and I find them very de stressing. I try to mentally do the excercises when I find myself tensing up. I can't tell yet the long term effect of Chi Kung but I am hopeful that it will help me to be more physically healthy.

5 out of 5 stars It changes your life!!!.......2005-09-15

I recommend this book to everyone seriously interested in dramatically improving their health. This books may change your life. Sifu Wong Kiew Kit is definitely the best of all. If you want to experiment yourself in a new dimension, the best you can do is getting this book and follow the "easy to do" instructions on a daily basis....you will for sure see the benefits in a short period of time.

5 out of 5 stars cannot thank master Lam enough.......2005-07-06

I got the book bacause I injured my hip such that turning in a certain way caused a sharp pain and I was looking for, at least, a partial cure. The hip problem is gone. As is a knee problem I've had for twenty years. As is the sometimes limp from a fractured toe I've had for years. I've lost twenty pounds. What I like most
about "The Way Of Power" is the no nonsense/concise style. Yet, there is just enough background information given and not mixed in with instructional text. What a good deal.

              Book Description

Drawing from original texts on self-mastery, Evola discusses two Hindu movements--Tantrism and Shaktism--which emphasize a path of action to gain power over energies latent within the body.

5 out of 5 stars Controversial, but a serious and revealing work........2007-02-12

Julius Evola are indeed a controversial author. But this book must be readed
with free mind, because it reveals too much of the metaphisics and of the
inner tradition of Hindu and Buddhist Tantras. This book also are now the
only source that compares the Hindu and ocidental spiritual traditions and
show interesting points of coincidence. A high recomended lecture to the
one who studies philosophy and religion.

2 out of 5 stars Like CLIMBING a vertical glacier..........2006-08-31

This book is just not worth the effort. I have no doubt that Evola was a tantric adept, but he was not a particularly good writer. He assumes a working knowledge of all sorts of tantric terminology, and the glossary is incomplete. He is maddeningly vague; I found myself re-reading sentences 5 and 6 times, just to figure out what his pronouns were referring to. He digresses from his digressions and whole trains of thought simply END without warning or resolution.

This book reads like some contemporary continental philosophy, but I get the impression that Evola was not merely an obscurantist. He was actually TRYING to communicate something with this book, he just wasn't successful.

Some of this could be forgiven as the result of poor translation, but some of it is also clearly the author's fault. He seems totally unconcerned with providing any textual support for his many bare assertions.

This book is of interest solely because of the author's scandalous life story, but you won't find any of that here. This is just a very, very boring manual for tantra.

5 out of 5 stars What tantra is really about.......2005-02-15

When most people, in the West, think of Tantra, they think of sex magic. And usually that's all they think of. However the Western perception of Tantra as just sex magic is quite incorrect, as Mr. Evola shows us in this book on what Tantra really is. In this book you actually learn what the spiritual practices are behind Tantra.

For instance, you will learn about the various spirits that are worked with in Tantra as well the ideal goal of Tantra, which is not to succumb to passion, but to master it. Sex magic is just a part of that and is used to liberate the individual from the passion for sex, so that it becomes just another act to do. The elemental workings described in this book are particularly fascinating and useful for anyone who likes doing elemental workings. Evola does a good job of explaining how this system of magic works. He takes an in-depth look at the Tattvas, as well as the role of colors in the making of tattvas, and explains how the tattvas are used.

However, this book isn't necessarily for everyone. Evola's writing is complex. You will certainly find yourself rereading passages, as I did, just to be sure you understood what he was explaining. Nonetheless, such a book is wonderful for how it challenges you. The ideas you can take away from this book to your own practice are well worth the work you may have to, when reading this book. At the least you'll learn that Tantra is about more than just sex magic.

5 out of 5 stars A View Good Book About The Occult of the East........2003-07-16

Evola turns to the East in his revolt against the modern world. This time he looks at the power of yoga. A friend from the Volksberg commune turned me on to this book. It ties well in with the Volkberg idea of mixing Odinism with the occult of the East. A lot of Eastern Pagan ideas tie into Asatru very seamlessly. This is a great book for both the student as well as the master of the occult. Wyatt Kaldenberg

              5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2003-04-18

This book articulates a solid understanding of tantric yogas
and incorporates several forms of tantra into a comprehensive
              study.
Evola talks at great length about the notion of the shiva/shakti
duality as well as various sadhanas (practices) such as kundalini, ... magic, and chakra work. Keeping in mind that ... magic is a key and valid point in this context Evola treats such ideas with informed maturity and a solid knowledge of how it is correctly performed.
This book is at times difficult to read but only because of the complexity of the issues discussed (the chapters concerning the Tattvas and human condition are the most profound and thus complex).
All in all a great tantra source.

Beautifully designed and photographed, Exotic Beads presents 45 projects utilizing beads from around the world. From the Americas come Native American, Pre-Columbian, and Peruvian designs, among others. Europe brings us elegant Edwardian styles, Austrian cut glass, Greek ceramics, and German wood beads. Designs from the Middle East include Afghani lapis lazuli, Egyptian faience, Indian amethyst, and Nepalese silver. The Far East yields Chinese cinnabar and enamel, Soo Chow jade, Indonesian glass, and more. And Africa offers Moroccan clay, Kenyan ceramics, and patterned-glass trading beads. Each project (mostly necklaces, plus some bracelets and earrings) merits a double-page spread, complete with a materials list and full directions. Because many of the beads may be expensive or not widely available, the photographs serve as inspiration so that you can substitute other beads and still achieve similar designs. The introductory section briefly outlines all the basic techniques. Although beginners should be able to handle many of the projects, Exotic Beads is not an introductory book, and some projects require more advanced skills.

I totally love this book. The photos are excellent and the beads are beautiful. Great ethnic pieces which are very unique. If you want to create something different and not your everyday necklaces this is the book for you. Some of the projects are simple and some are more advanced. Most of the projects are made with thread which is different than what I had been using. Some of the beads might be hard to find, but that is no problem since I improvised with similar beads.

This means that I'm a biginner, but in a very short time I found myself looking on the internet for some free patterns so that I can see if I'm improving or not in this new hobby which may also gives me a fortune. And during may surfing on the WEB I went to the Amazon (...) where I have found myself in a mine of Gold of all sort of Magazines. This gave me the whealt to move step forword, and by all means I did, because I bought two very useful magazines which I'm sure that I am going to keep AMAZON the favorite to buy from. One last thing is that not only Amazon kept their promise of their date, but I have recieved them Ten ( 10 ) days before. I recommend Amazon as best suppliers to my friends.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite ethnic designs.......2002-09-29

Oh my gosh, what beautiful jewelry pieces! This is the best jewelry book by Sara Withers that I have yet seen. The title lives up to its name because the beads used and the designs all have an exotic, ethnic look. Each chapter focuses on designs representing a particular culture, i.e., Native American, Europe, Middle East, Far East, and Africa, the pieces having an updated, sophisticated look.

There is a good beginning section with explanations and illustrations for basic jewelry-making techniques such as wirework, threading, finishing, and a beginner may be able to get started with these, although I always think it's extremely helpful to see it done in person first. In addition to the basic techniques, each piece is shown in full color double-page photography so you can see the details, and each piece has its own instructions. The layout of instructions is done differently than most bead books: each step of the instructions has an arrow connecting it to the part of the jewelry piece it is referring to, and this is helpful, but being scattered about the page, your eyes have to roam around to find step 1, step 2, etc.

The designs are on the complex side; most of them require multiple strands of thread and therefore are more time-consuming than simple one-stranded necklaces. However, the results are attention-getting. Be prepared for requests from people who see them to buy your creations!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing ... Not what I expected from the reviews.......2001-06-26

I have to take exception to the reader reviews of this book. I ordered the book based on these reviews, but now that I have it in my hand, I find that I'm very disappointed. While the book design and layout are fine, and many of the beads are interesting, I found the projects to be disappointing. For the beginning beader, this book may provide some inspiration, although I think the instructions are very sketchy, at best. I'm still searching for a good design book on beading. In the meantime, I do like "All Wired Up" by Mark Lareau -- the gallery of jewelry designs at the end of his book are great!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Bead Book You Would Ever Want.......2000-09-28

This is the best bead book that you could want. Even if you don't want to make your own beads, the photos of the most exotic necklaces you could imagine will make you want to just gaze throughout the book over and over again.

                    A really great inspiration.

This is for those people that would like to leave their children something in writing of how they felt as they were raising their children. It's better than trying to remember it all to have it all written down where it can be given from generation down to generations to come. I would have loved to read something like this from my mother who died when I was 16.

5 out of 5 stars Mom, Tell Me One More Story: Your Story of Raising Me.......2007-01-04

This is a wonderful way to preserve memories of raising your child--for your child. It covers all aspects from first finding out your were pregnant through your advice for them finding a life partner and raising their own family. Be prepared to spend many, many hours writing in the book as there are a lot of pages. But my daughters consider it a treasure to keep forever.

It's a very thorough book to record memories in, it covers all aspects of a childs life. Starting with their birth, and all through childhood...funny things they said & did, first friends, grandparents, traveling, etc. What a great gift to give your child when they grow up!

Norman Sherry did an excellent job of chronicling some of the most facinating phases of Graham Greene's personal and professional life. While I found vol. 1 to be a bit slow and often uninteresting at times, vol. 2 really gives great insight into the period of Greene's most productive and important years.

I'm eagerly awaiting vol. 3 to see how well Sherry tells the life of one of the more important authors of the Twentieth Century.

2 out of 5 stars How to cover up an interesting life.......1999-08-04

Sherry's "biography" is saved only by its topic: Graham Greene, a man whose life was so interesting that even Sherry's ineptitude can't quite get in the way.

The flaws in this work abound but of import are the consistent failures by Sherry to dive into anything that would or could possibly reveal "too much" about a man that even Sherry admits, was notorious for not revealing much of anyhting to anyone.

Dreams that beg to be discussed are described and then abandoned as topics, health concerns (Green's hemorage surely deserves some comment, doesn't it? - or have I missed it amid the insesent repetions by Sherry that The Power and the Glory was Grenne's "best work" - understood that the first three times Sherry said it)and refrences to one of Green's acknowledged "masters" (Conrad) are offered up, and then, dropped like hot rocks.

To make matters worse, one is treated to such sparkling gems of "thought" as (to paraphrase) that the insurgents in malaya were fighting against the "benificent" British and their colonial puppets - surely, greene, a man on the side of the "underdog" (regardless of said dog's politics)had something else in mind? Or is this more of the ex-spys double-talk? Using Sherry as a source, one will never know.

Given Greene's penchent for opacity, it should come as no suprise to anyone who knows anything about the man, that having chosen his own "man in biography" that Greene should have played Sherry for his own purposes.

As a source-work for Greene's own material, and as an illsutration of what can happen to an author upon achieving "success" the book is useful.

Beyond that, stick to Greene's own work. You'll be far better served.

                    Sincerely,

                    A Reader

                    4 out of 5 stars A great biography-if you like literature don't miss this........1999-05-11

I have read very little of Graham Greene and I have not read Vol 1 of this biography. However I found this Vol 2 (1939-55) an enthralling read. It covers his life during the second world war and then later in Vietnam and Africa. There is a bit too much about his lovesick affair with Mrs Walston (a peculiar arrangment and a bit uninteresting at times) The record of his war service and his time in publishing is fascinating.I guess if you have read the books and are already a fan then this biography is even more valuable. The life of G.G. is a novel in itself, full of colour, sadness and bravery. These biographies can be turgid in the wrong hands but Sherry only uses the details necessary to tell a vivid story. His prose is excellent and flows along. A very enjoyable read and it made want to get reading the novels-and Vol3 which is due in 2000 I believe.

Sherry has certainly done a thorough job of "tracking" Greene, with the result that one gets a rather full picture of this writer. It's easy to throw around words like "great" and so on when talking about Greene, especially if you like him, but in the end I see him as a very entertaining writer who never achieved greatness. (Compare him to Joyce or Tolstoy and you'll see what I mean.) Sherry is a bit of a busy-body and gets into some strange "politically correct" judgments, criticizing Greene for not being properly appreciative of the 'natives' about whom he said many condescending, but possibly accurate things. Sherry seems not to be able to understand why Greene couldn't say nice things about everybody in the same way opportunistic journalists seem able to manage. Well, I don't have the answer to that, except to say that Greene's generation (see Waugh and Orwell) didn't have much patience for propaganda.

5 out of 5 stars getting to know graham greene.......2000-08-31

Norman Sherry's thoughtful biography perfectly captures the early years of an honest, lonely, sensitive Englishman with privileged opportunities who becomes a successful novelist. As Sherry pointed out Greene's keen power of observation produced a cynical and realistic view of life. Burdened by anxieties but guided by his Catholic faith Greene was attracted to the epic struggles of flawed underdogs trying to cope with their transitory lives. Sherry ties all this together neatly. Its a book for leisurely reading. You will never regret its purchase.

5 out of 5 stars All I ever wanted to know about GG but did not know to ask........1998-09-26

This is an inspiring, detailed look at a fascinating writer, by an equally fascinating writer. The images of Norman Sherry traipsing through the jungles and Mexico, etc., give one pause and confidence. If his work on Conrad is as detailed and careful, I would suspect he could give the composition of bilge water in the hold of each ship for each trip for each book. If one ever wondered about writers and sources and inspiration and biography and art, start with volume I. You could have no finer introduction.

Stymied by a question from the Dalai Lama and thirsting for a religious foundation of equanimity, Rodger Kamenetz goes back to his roots in search of a Jewish inner spirituality. Through encounters with a range of teachers inspired by kabbalah, Kamenetz discovers a wealth of practices that cultivate equivalencies to the Buddhist ideas of balance, emptiness, compassion, etc. Kamenetz personalizes his experiences and delights in finding them in an idiom that connects him with his own tradition. When the story culminates in a Seder with the Dalai Lama, Kamenetz is brought full circle, even offering methods of maintaining Jewish cohesion to the Tibetan diaspora. Penetrating, poignant, and full of discoveries, Stalking Elijah is like an archaeological dig in your own back yard that yields one precious treasure after another.

                            Book Description

Rodger Kamenetz continues the dazzling spiritual adventures he began in The Jew in the Lotus, his bestselling account of the historical dialogue between rabbis and the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala. In Stalking Elijah, Kamenetz takes his wild mind on the road, seeking the counsel of spiritual teachers across the country as he searches for his own Jewish truth. Entertaining, illuminating, and deeply moving, Stalking Elijah takes us all on a remarkable journey through the new landscape of Jewish practice.

5 out of 5 stars The story of a spiritual search .......2007-03-26

The spiritual quest of Rodger Kamenetz through meeting with a series of non- conventional Jewish religious teachers is at the heart of this book. Kamenetz seeks the wisdom of teachers like Zalman Shlomi -Schacter, Jonathan Omer- Man, Art Green. He relates the stories of his encounters with these people.
Kamenetz also tells in the work the story of Paul Wolff whose religious quest was intensified when he and his wife suffered the terrible loss of their young daughter. Kamenetz and his wife had also lost an infant, and he shows understanding for Woolf.
While respecting Kamenetz for his effort to learn and understand I was slightly puzzled by the whole enterprise. Perhaps I see things too simplistically. And perhaps I have the advantage of living in Jerusalem where praying in a minyan is such a regular and ordinary experience. But I somehow do not understand why a Jewish spiritual quest does not have as central component communal prayer in a traditional way.
I believe Kamenetz's quest would have been easier and in a way more successful had he simply focused on the idea that by doing mitzvot by doing the will of God one raises oneself up spiritually closer to God.
I may be foolish but I do not understand why in religious terms it is necessary for a Jew to borrow from other faiths.
Nonetheless Kamenetz's sincerity and his desire to learn are strong virtues which help make this work interesting and authentic.

4 out of 5 stars "Start from where you are".......2001-09-15

This book is a sequel to Kammenetz's "The Jew in the Lotus" which recounts a visit of Jewish thinkers of various backgrounds and persuasions to Dharmsala, India, the home of the Tibetan Government in exile, to discuss the secret of Jewish survival in the diaspora with the Dali Lama and other Tibetan leaders. The book, and the discussions, went far beyond that topic, however, and centered upon an inter-faith dialogue between the Jewish leaders and the Tibetans on the nature of their religious beliefs and practices.

In "Stalking Elijah", Kammenetz tries to find his way back to a Jewish observance using the insights he had gleaned from his meeting with the Tibetans. In other words, he undertakes a journey from Dhramasala to Judaism. The book recounts Kammenetz's meetings with Jewish spiritual leaders, most of whom practice a form of "mystical" or contemplative Judaism in Kammenetz's attempt to recover something of Judaism for himself.

I was frustrated by the book and found it hard to write about it.
It strikes me as self-indulgent and as unduly polemical. Also, Kammenetz's discussions of his meetings with his teachers are superficial. We don't really see enough of the teachers to get a good feeling for what they have to say.

The most valuable theme of the book, for me, is given in the title of this review. This is advice given by one of the Rabbi's to whom Kammenetz turns for spiritual advice, an ex-Lubavicher Rabbi who, like Kammenetz, visited the Dali Lama. In the context of the book, the Rabbi advises the author to begin where he is in life in his search for spiritual enlightenment. Thus, Kammenetz finds he his to work within the scope of his Jewish background and learning, and follow a Jewish path to define and to realize his religious goals. The advice to "start from where you are" is wise, I think, beyond the use to which it is placed here. In every walk of life at every stage, the beginning of wisdom is to "start from where you are" rather than to try to be someone else or to be discontented with one's life. Good rabinnical advice, and good Buddhist advice too.

In addition to this component of the book, I found the final chapter describing a Passover seder in Dharamasala attended by Jews and Tibetan Buddhists well written. It can stand alone as an essay.

The book is of mixed merit but its goal and message are valuable.

3 out of 5 stars Personal spiritual quest.......2001-06-11

This book comes as a natural sequel to its predecessor "The Jew in the Lotus." The later describes the author's encounter with Buddhist mysticism and how this event eventually led to rediscovering of his Jewish roots. "Stalking Elijah" describes his encounters and dialogues with mystical teachers inspired on Kabbalah, representatives of the Jewish Renewal Movement in America (Rabbi Zalmon Schachter-Shalomi, Rabbi Jonathan Omer-man, Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb).

It is a very personal view, self-centered, a mystical journey that leaves many open questions and speculates on several issues. Although Kamenetz writings may act as a source of inspiration for Jews (and why not for other denominations as well), his exhausting elaboration on certain issues might be viewed as tedious by some readers. His striving quest for religious identification and willingness to share his adventure with his readers underlies a sad paradox: the mystical journey, as much as the experience of God, is such a personal, instrospective, and subjective experience that it becomes impossible to share it with other people by means of all known conventional methods of communication.

Probably the most important conclusion he reaches is that when a Jew is faced with the dilemma between mystical experience and practical religious life, complex procedures are not required. A single blessing from the heart may very well do the trick!

2 out of 5 stars Spiritual wanderlust or poor quality compass?.......2000-10-04

The author writes well and I certainly appreciated that. However, his spiritual journey seems primarily to emphasize his lack of focus and his ability to see Judaism and Buddhism as "one-size-fits-all" spiritual companions. I felt that his analogies between the two religious philosophies were stretched rather thin and I was never entirely certain why he felt so strongly that the two must be related or joined together. I also felt that in several instances, he misrepresented Jewish theological ideas in order to make them fit more neatly into a Buddhist mold. For example, he tries to relate the Buddhist notions of reincarnation with those of Jewish Kabbalistic mystics. While there are similarities, he never makes note of the fact that reincarnation is not a particularly strong thread within any of the major denominations of Judaism. All in all, after reading this book, the phrase, "self-indulgent" keeps coming to mind. I'm sure it was important for him to write it -- I'm just not convinced that it's important for others to read.

                            5 out of 5 stars Very worthwhile!.......2000-08-31

I read this book for a class on Judaism and was simply delighted. I have a background in Buddhism and Christianity, with some exposure to Judaism. I was particularly impressed with the mystical traditions and reform efforts while retaining roots in the Jewish tradition. Christianity could benefit from similar efforts!

The book is written as a story and I found it easy to follow and entertaining to read. While the differences among various Jewish belief systems was not altogether clear, many differences among and between those in the story helped to illustrate the strength of the tradition through its inclusiveness.

The seder held in Dharmasala near the end of the story must have been a rather awkward experience for Kamenetz. Still, it may have opened yet another door for peace and understanding, as well as the collaboration between two peoples in exile.
