Book Description

Ethan Allen's "A Narrative of Colonel Ethan Allen's Captivity"(1795) is an autobiographical work by the eighteenth-century folk hero, philosopher and patriot. In it, Allen describes his brief military career in the Revolution, his horrific two-year captivity by the British and his final release and journey back to his beloved Vermont. He provides a ground level view of the war, of captivity, of the meaning and purpose of the American Revolution. In the Copley Edition, an introduction and notes are provided that contextualize and inform student reading of the text. The Copley Edition includes a number of "Links" to other works and to ideas that demand more elaboration than a simple footnote might allow. The black-bordered pages are insertions by the editor into the text designed to help the student see the ways in which Allen's text is connected to the world around him.

5 out of 5 stars Ethan Allen's Story..........2007-01-11

This book is perfect for American history buffs. It is written by Ethan Allen, the Revolutionary War hero who captured Fort Ticonderoga. It describes the Ticonderoga episode and then tells of Allen's captivity by the British after his unsuccessful attempt to take Montreal. Allen is a wonderful American historical figure and it is most interesting to read of his experiences first hand. This book is a good companion to Stewart Holbrook's delightful and sympathetic historical biography of Allen, Ethan Allen. Allen is one of the least remembered heroes of that bygone era and definitely deserves more attention than he gets in today's history books. He was intelligent, self-educated, outrageous, gallant, brave, profane, classy and is just plain fun to read about.

                    Book Description

In 1970, Unica Zürn, the companion and lover of the Surrealist artist Hans Bellmer, threw herself from the sixth floor window of their apartment in Paris. Her suicide was the culmination of thirteen years of mental crises which are described with disarming lucidity in The Man Of Jasmine, subtitled Impressions from a Mental Illness.

Zürn's mental collapse was initiated when she encountered in the real world her childhood fantasy figure "the man of jasmine": he was the writer Henri Michaux, and her meeting him plunged her into a world of hallucination in which visions of her desires, anxieties and events from her unresolved past overwhelmed her present life. Her return to "reality" was constantly interrupted by alternate visionary and depressive periods. Zürn's compelling narrative also reveals her uneasy relationship with words and language, which she attempted to resolve by the compulsive writing of anagrams. Anagrams allowed her to dissect the language of everyday, to personalise it, and to make it reveal hidden at its core astonishing messages, threats and evocations. They formed the basis of her interpretation of the split between her inner & outer lives and underpin the texts included in this selection.

The Man of Jasmine is certainly one of the greatest descriptions of mental collapse, but it is much more. Zürn's familiarity with Surrealist conceptions of the psyche, and her extraordinary self-possession during the most alarming experiences are allied to vivid descriptive powers which make this a literary as well as a psychological masterpiece.

                    4 out of 5 stars True Surrealism.......2006-12-30

I was afraid to read this book at first fearing it would be a horribly dreary account of life in insane asylums but it is something more. This is a great little book in the same vein as Gerard de Nerval's, Aurelia and Zurn has just as wonderful a voice. Her matter of fact and almost innocent narrative of her insanity is by turns disturbing, depressing, hilarious and ultimately poetic. Her style is somehow innocent and sophisticated simultaneously similar to the Alsatian Poet, Hans Arp's. It is definitely one of the great works of surrealism and one of the few objective accounts of insanity from the inside.

5 out of 5 stars Dizzying Heights of Madness.......2004-08-16

"The Man of Jasmine" is the most imaginative (without losing it's objectivity) account of one woman's descent into insanity ever written. It opens innocently enough, with budding artist Unica Zurn describing her childhood visions. By turns ecstatic, horrific, depressing and extremely strange, the clash between imagination and reality which Zurn experiences first hand is riveting. Her delusions (the Dadaist poets planning to liberate her from a mental ward, for example) are so manically inspired and magical that they genuinely achieve what so few of the surrealists could: the destruction of the boundary between fantasy and the world as we know it.

Zurn walks the tightrope of delirium with alarming grace, at times unwittingly raiding the hazardous realms of deramgement which Breton and the gang could only admire from the outside: "As she returns to her hotel she allows herself to be directed once more by the voice within, telling her the way. She lies down on the bed in her room and, as already for several nights, is unable to sleep. Suddenly the stove starts to emit smoke--the smell gives her the impression that a shady, dubious unknown surgeon is preparing to conduct a hideous operation which she must escape at all costs. She leaves her room, closing the corridor and opens the first door. The room is empty" (pg 53). Wow.

In the course of the narrative Zurn quite literally LIVES the surrealist manifesto as very few of the group ever did--casually pouring a cup of water on a policeman's hat, relying on an invisible Henri Michaux for support while witnessing the horror of life in the numerous mental hospitals she is forced into, and allowing the mathematical anagrams she is constantly writing to make many pivotal decisions in her life. Unlike many surrealist pieces, however, this is not all word games and defiant pretension; Zurn's frenzied exaltation is taken apart piece by piece.

Zurn peers out from the veil of convulsive beauty with the fortunate or unfortunate aid of psych meds and the result is tragic disillusionment. She becomes a mere mortal, no longer wishing to see hallucinations. Zurn's leap from a sixth floor window is as much a challenge to the surrealist quest as Nadja's psychosis and Nerval swinging from a lamppost. It seems that the degree of ferocity with which the surrealist pioneers and legends embraced the fantastic at the cost of the mundane an equally ferocious psychical toll is suffered when they return to earth. Still, this is a masterpiece which should be right up there with "Paris Peasant" and "Liberty or Love!" I read this in one night and could not get over it. Deliciously nutty and gone too soon, Zurn was not the kind of chick one takes home to mom and dad.

                    5 out of 5 stars a moment in madness.......1998-06-22

The Man of Jasmine works completely as a spell inside the mind of someone in the throes of psychosis: the obsessions, the delusions, the hypno-poetics; all the mental movements with which Surrealism only experiments. Unica Zurn is the real thing! If you like this, try her other difficult-to-find volume, The House of Illnesses, Leonora Carrington's Down Below, or Janet Frames' Faces In The Water.

The practice of keeping a journal is increasingly being recommended by therapists and other health care professionals as a tool for gaining a better understanding of one's life situations and corresponding emotions. In this book, Jacobs provides readers with a progressive, step-by-step guide for doing so easily and effectively. Journals, she writes, are "a checkpoint between your emotions and the world," that enable us to view our feelings from a distance, and to become clearer about the beliefs and attitudes that shape them.

Beginning with an explanation about the value of keeping a journal, Jacobs then guides readers through various processes to clarify our understanding of the subjective nature of emotions and how they are influenced by time and memory. Readers then learn how to define and evaluate their emotions, predict their emotional patterns, release emotions that no longer serve them, and refocus and organize their emotional life in ways that are more appropriate and fulfilling. Supported by over 30 hands-on exercises, this guide is an excellent resource for novice and seasoned journalists alike.--Larry Trivieri Jr.

                    Book Description

When you've decided you can't take it any more, it helps a great deal to know what it actually is. The process of writing about overwhelming emotions is a remarkably effective means of creating clarity and perspective in your life. Regular journal writers and diarists rely on their writing to help them keep their emotions in perspective; this book distills the best emotional benefits of regular personal writing into a series of engaging and easy-to-practice writing exercises.

This book begins by helping readers explore why they were drawn to journaling in the first place and what their goals are for their writing experiments. Short projects help readers name their emotions, distancing them from overwhelming feelings so that they can react more constructively. Other exercises work to help readers interpret emotions from different perspectives. By learning to gauge their emotional reactions on a "feelings barometer," readers will come to understand the perceived strength of an emotion. Further exercises encourage readers to discover emotional triggers, write an emotional history, and connect physical and emotional responses. By practicing these exercises, readers will develop a language of positive imagery that will enhance comfort and peace of mind.

5 out of 5 stars Learn to Control Your Emotions More Than They Control You!.......2005-05-09

I love the personal and non-judgmental tone of this book! Dr. Jacobs clearly cares about her readers and wants all of us to learn how to manage our emotions better when they get out of hand. Happily, she offers a lot more than just talk. There are 33 exercises in the book plus space to respond to them. In some of the exercises, you get to know yourself better, and in others you practice the techniques she teaches for managing emotions. All you need is a pen or pencil and the desire to control your feelings more than they control you. The book ends up being both a valuable lesson about the way emotions work and an invaluable journal that helps you figure out how YOUR emotions work and how you can become a better manager of them. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to have more control over his or her life!

5 out of 5 stars How to entertain without stress.......2001-11-16

Nathalie Dupree is one of the most practical, yet creative chefs around. She has created (many) beautiful books, the being the culmination of her efforts at culinary, literary and artistic undertakings. I have watched her develop over the years and recommend this to all those who want to entertain properly as well as those who just want some wonderful recipes.
What will she publish next? I'm waiting!!!!!!

I not only enjoy the Comfortable Entertaining Cookbook by Nathalie Dupree, but I feel Nathalie Dupree's Comfortable Entertaining television series is one of the best cooking series ever. I can identify with Nathalie more than other cooking show personality's. She makes me feel as though perfection is not a prerequisite for a good cook. She comes across as someone who finds joy in cooking and entertaining and does not require prefection in herself or others.

I've always been a fan of Nathalie Dupree's books. You can almost always count on her recipes and cooking tips. But after watching her most recent PBS series, I have to admit that my admiration for Ms. Dupree has significantly decreased. If you haven't seen the woman before or realized who she is in the culinary world, you would never believe that this is a graduate of the prestigious Le Condon Bleu. Ms. Dupree appears inconfident, ill-prepared, unorganized, and sloppy in the kitchen. She's nothing like I'd imagine my favorite cookbook author would be on TV. Compared to other prominent TV chefs, Ms. Dupree flunks out big time. Some of her favorite sentences on TV include (paraphrase): "I missed a step, but that's okay. We can fix it. Follow the recipe. Don't do what I do.", "These popovers are a little bit overbrowned. Yours should look much lighter than this.", etc. The way Ms. Dupree sloppily pipes whipped cream on top of a pie or struggles to remove silver skins from a piece of beef tenderloin (resulting in a very sloppy and jagged looking piece of party roast) makes one wonder if she really belongs up there with Jacques Pepin or Julia Child.

The show needs to be retaped and edited. The host herself needs a new haircut which doesn't require constant flipping and allows people to see more than half of her face.

A great gift book for those who have entertaining skills as well as those who aspire to. Natalie Dupree does an excellent job of demystifying gracious entertaining. I will also enjoy keeping the book myself as a good resource.

5 out of 5 stars This superbly illustrated cookbook is Nathalie at her best!!.......1998-12-10

As an owner of all of Nathalie's cookbooks, she again has proved herself a consummate professional and a perfectionist as far as format and content are concerned. Her book is delightful (of coffee table category) and is divided into four major categories: sit-down meals, fork meals, finger meals, and holiday.

Tom Eckerle's beautiful photography again contributes to the overall success of her latest work and is even better than Nathalie's Southern Memories. I was inspired by her innovative recipes -- even all these cookbooks later. I plan to try buffet tenderloin mini-rounds, melon cubes with slivers of prosciutto, as well as the low country shrimp bowl. Nathalie's "how-to" pages and tips are invaluable; I plan to spend a few hours "reading" more of her cookbook during my holiday vacation. One last big plus (another reason for buying this cookbook for yourself or a Christmas gift this year) is the excellent format, including ingredients printed in columnar bold print to the left of directions. Five-star all the way!! This would make an excellent bridal shower gift, also. Submitted by Jean Arkens

Two years ago I read and enjoyed Driving Over Lemons, the memoir of a British ex-pat and his family's life in Spain. A Parrot in the Pepper Tree is the follow up book, covering the time when Stewart was writing his first book along with some memories from his youth.

While I felt the bits about his attempt at being a rock star were rather dull, the rest of the book more than makes up for one skip-worthy chapter. The majority of his book takes place in the year when he was writing his first memoir. He describes all his different attempts at farming including a bleak winter drive into Sweden to shear sheep and a go at growing potatoes. Neither venture goes well but he takes the disasters with a good sense of humor. To his sup rise, he succeeds as a writer even though his daughter insists that he can't write (at least in Spanish).

It took me longer to read than expected but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Chris Stewart is an enthusiastic ex-pat making a living in Spain with his wife and daughter. He tries his hand at sheep sheering, farming and flamenco but ultimately it is writing that he excels at.

From the legendary Kaffe Fassett studio comes this stunning collection of unique designs for men's and women's sweaters -- and more. Sharing Fassett's passion for color, Brandon Mably's original designs are proving him one of the brightest new knitwear designers in the field. From a diamond-patterned, V-neck cardigan to a trellis-patterned, crewneck sweater, there is something in this book to appeal to knitters everywhere. Mably's designs are accessible for all skill levels with clear instructions and easy-to-follow charts, and the timeless styles are suitable for a wide variety of tastes.

Well presented clear photographs and graphs Hard to decide which to knit first

3 out of 5 stars Pretty colorwork, interesting designs but some problems, too.......2002-09-07

Brandon Mably is a member of popular knit designer Kaffe Fassett's studio. I really liked many of Mably's designs, which are in some ways simpler and bolder than Fassett's--though clearly inspired by his mentor. But the design work here is spotty. Some of the ideas such as a Gypsy-striped scarf and vest, are simple in concept but look stunning. Others are Kaffee-clones, such as stars on complicated backgrounds. And there are complete departures from the Fassett style, such as a sweater with an intarsia design of pitted olives. Very cute.

The problem with this book, however, is that the quality of the knitted models varies from great to just awful. I would never have let some of those photos see the light of day, let alone the pages of a book. Knitting boo-boos jump out of the page such as uneven motif joins in intarsia, bulgy and uneven increasing above the ribbing and other amateurish-looking knitting that would have a competent knitting editor shouting naughty words. Another problem is the reliance on Rowan yarns, which are expensive and go out of production rapidly. If you want to reproduce these styles exactly, in the colors and weights of yarn specified, you may find yourself on a wild-goose chase. And the yarns used are often cotton. Now, cotton is able to be dyed in deep and bright colors, and the sheen on a mercerized cotton yarn lends a brilliance to knitting that a matte wool cannot achieve. But knitting intarsia (a technique where yarns are knitted in independent color zones and linked on the wrong side with a twisting method) is incredibly difficult to do with cotton. This is because cotton drapes and does not adapt to fill gaps in tension variations. Wool is forgiving in this matter and the fuzzy surface also hides knitting flaws. With cotton yarns, the inevitable variations of hand knitting are magnified, though master knitters can compensate. If you are not experienced in intarsia, let me tell you that a horrific experience awaits you if your first attempts are with cotton yarns. So be forewarned. If you don't believe me, look at the "Olives" sweater which sadly illustrates the difficulties that even an experienced knitter can have with cotton and intarsia. Tragic.

The sweater shapes in this book do vary from the wide and loose Fassett style (that does not always flatter the wide and voluptuous among us) and there are slimming v-necks and nicely done tunics. That's good. There are many design ideas here that are interesting and attractive, as well as some good colorways. However, other color choices were garish and muddy-looking.

So, if you like the Fassett style and are looking for more inspiration, you may find it here. But the uneven quality and the fact that many of these styles were previously published in Rowan books elsewhere, limit the value of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Nicely produced book of men's and women's sweaters.......2001-09-05

As a warning, almost half of these designs are already published in Rowan magazines. The remainder, all new for this book, are often variations on Mably's style, which is similar to the well-known Kaffe Fassett's, although much simpler. The sweaters are really abstract, skirting the avant garde, although the fundamental styles are basic pullovers and cardigans. It's the color schemes that are dynamic and innovative, although Mably shows most of the sweaters in bright, bold, and sometimes almost garish color combinations. Since I prefer a more classic and muted look, it is difficult for me to see past the colors to the actual sweater and choose my own schemes. However, if you like lots of color, this book is an excellent choice. Most of the yarns used are Rowan (with some Jaeger), which is a sad choice since if you have used Rowan yarns, you are aware that as soon as a pattern is published, Rowan stops manufacturing the yarn. For instance, some of these patterns call for DK soft, which was recently discontinued. Pluses to this book are the introduction, which is concise and helpful, bearing tips on handling intarsia and fair isle in a nicely laid out presentation. Also, Mably introduces each pattern with a brief notation that describes his inspiration and intention, adding a charming touch. The patterns themselves are clear and simple to read, as are the large-size black and white charts, although there are no size diagrams, making it difficult to substitute yarns or handle your differing gauge. A huge plus is the photos of the sweaters. Unlike some publishers who concentrate more on the dramatic pose of the models, obsuring the sweater, this publisher paid lots of attention to showing the sweater. You know exactly what you are looking at and getting, including two or more photos of the sweaters, even with back views, to give you a strong idea. The book is really excellently executed, on fine quality paper. A nice presentation. I'm only sorry that these sweaters aren't my sort -- but if you like Mably's cover sweater, I'll bet you find you'll want to knit most of those included in the book!

5 out of 5 stars Healing Anxiety With Herbs.......2001-11-06

People who want to do something other take prescription tranquilizers for stress and anxiety will find the information they need in Healing Anxiety With Herbs, the latest alternative health book from Harold H. Bloomfield, M.D.
A recognized expert, Dr. Bloomfield has written numerous other books about natural healing, many of them best-sellers. He says "each year sixty-five million Americans experience some symptoms of anxiety." Anxiety not only causes symptoms such as headaches and fatigue, it also worsens other medical problems.
Dr. Bloomfield first defines anxiety as an exaggerated stress response and explains how the body and mind become stressed. He then discusses herbs in general, pointing out that "80 percent of the people on earth rely on herbs for their health care needs." The United States is one of the few countries where herbs are not routinely prescribed by mainstream health care practitioners.
The main prescription drugs for anxiety, depression, and insomnia are described, along with their side effects. Dr. Bloomfield states that most of these drugs are over prescribed "because, until now, most doctors and patients were unaware of herbal alternatives." He says that some anxiety problems may not need any treatment, other than an opportunity for the patient to practice self-healing, than adds "when a medicinal agent is needed, however, herbal remedies deserve to be considered before synthetic drugs because of their relative safety and fewer side effects, as well as their effectiveness."
Each of the anti-anxiety, sedative, and anti-depressant herbs are discussed in detail, including recommended dosages. He provides the medicinal history of each herb, along with an explanation of how it works. He also warns against combining or overusing certain herbs.
The final section of the book is devoted to natural self-healing. Dr. Bloomfield says that anxiety "signals a need to change to a more healthful lifestyle." He has developed a natural self-healing program based on his more than thirty years "in the practice of integrative psychiatry, alternative medicine, and psychotherapy." He describes several strategies designed to enable you to "immediately feel more inner peace and personal power."
Freeing yourself from guilt, achieving emotional freedom, and recovering from a broken heart are among the natural self-healing techniques.
Dr. Bloomfield says "long-term, expensive treatments are seldom necessary. Treatment for anxiety with herbs is relatively inexpensive." Healing Anxiety With Herbs provides information on safe and effective natural herbal remedies for treating anxiety, insomnia, and depression; and the nurturing techniques needed to prevent recurrence of those conditions.

I purchased this book after I heard Bloomfield speak at a conference I attended in San Diego. I am a counselor and I have found the book to be an excellent source for myself as well as my patients to read. It is well written, excellent information and easy to understand. It is a good reinforcement for my work. Bloomfield's approach reaches out to the whole person--it is well balanced. The book would be excellent for anyone to read -- be informed about the wonderful benefits of the herbal treatment of anxiety and depression. The use Prozac etc is out of control!

                            Book Description

He was born Reginald Kenneth White in 1947, and he began his career in his teens pounding the piano in a pub. The world, though, would know him as Elton John, the name that for the past three decades has epitomized rock-music superstardom. From blockbuster albums like Friends and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in the 1970s to award-winning scores in the nineties for the film and Broadway show The Lion King and the current stage hit Aida, Elton John has never failed to dazzle his audiences—and never more so than at the funeral of his close friend Diana, Princess of Wales, when he moved an entire nation with his poignant and powerful performance of “Candle in the Wind 1997” (“Goodbye England’s Rose”). Epically conceived and masterfully told, Philip Norman’s biography of the inimitable, legendary Elton John searches out the man behind the performer in glittering costumes and sky-high boots. Norman explores the draining addictions, the failed marriage, attempted suicides, a multimillionaire’s supposed money troubles. He examines Elton’s compulsions and coming out; he illuminates the creative drive that continues prodigiously and brilliantly to produce new music. What emerges is a frank, sympathetic portrait so truthful that Elton himself has said, “He’s got me spot on.”

                            4 out of 5 stars Very Detailed..........2007-05-06

This is a very good book. I found it at my local library, and, being a very big fan of Elton John, I decided to give it a read.

It is detailed, and it's very evident that the author went through great pains to make sure he interviewed as many people as possible in order to ensure accuracy, and that's to be commended.

I have only 2 gripes about this book. One is that, rather than continue throughout the years, the author does a lot of jumping back and forth from chapter to chapter. One minute you're reading about Elton in 1971, and, just when you think you're on a straight track, for whatever reasons he deemed necessary, the story suddenly jumps back to several years earlier. It does make for confusion and sheer frustration.

The second is how the author also cites Elton's amazing gift for mimicry when describing his early work playing compilation/cover albums as a session musician. He notes Elton's vocals on "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" by Stevie Wonder, "Up Around The Bend" by Creedence Clearwater Revival, and "Spirit In The Sky" by Norman Greenbaum as being uncannily close to, and not being able to tell the difference from, the originals.

Well, back in '99 I purchased a CD in Australia called "16 Legendary Covers from 1969/70 As Sung By Elton John". I had completely forgotten about this CD until I read this book, and after giving it another listen, I'm wondering where the author has come up with his inane idea of his that EJ's vocals were amazingly similar to that of the originals. The 3 songs I listed above just happen to be included on that CD, and they don't even sound anywhere in the same vicinity as the originals when it comes to the vocals.

It's a nice CD to own, if you're a major collector like I am, but don't believe what the author has stated in his book regarding EJ's vocal mimicry and early session work. Other than those, the book does make for a nice read. I just wish he had kept everything in chronological order, rather than continually jump back and forth between the years.

The author also makes reference to a documentary that was filmed in 1973, and talks about it extensively, with footage being shot of Elton doing everything from lounging about to goofing off to recording. But, for all the detailed work that went into this book, he fails to mention that the documentary was eventually completed, and released, and entitled "Elton John and Bernie Taupin Say 'Goodbye To Norma Jean' and Other Things...". It wasn't released theatrically, but on television. Why the author chose to disregard this fact is beyond me.

4 out of 5 stars Still the "Definitive" Biography.......2003-03-30

I sympathize with those who find the pace of this one troubling. I bought the first edition when it came out twelve years ago; I was only ten years-old but read it with eyes wide-open. I was excited to hear Norman was coming out with a new version including everything that the first edition and second edition originally offered--but with supplemental info that captured the story of his 1990s renaissance. I was, however, disappointed in the following:

                            A) only one or two additional chapters had been added to cover this significant time of John's career

                            B) the discography (by leading archivist Mark Lewisohn) had been updated, but nowhere near as comprehensive (the new one is SHORTER)

                            C) what had once been three extensive sections of color and b&w photos had been compromised into only two

... so, be advised of these differences that make this new version a disappointing replacement for Norman's original.

BUT, make no mistake. I have given 4 stars based on the merits of Norman's extensive research and outstanding writing as a biographer. He paints a fair and honest picture of a superstar based on first hand testimony from John's closest friends, relatives and bandmates. This is, and always will be, the 'definitve' portrait in words.

This book was not "authorized", by the way. However, of the original, Elton John himself was quoted at the time as saying "He's got me spot on" (this quote is printed, of course, on the back of the book). I think that says enough. Enjoy the book.

                            2 out of 5 stars A lazy effort.......2003-02-04

The grim realisation that the last 20 years would be given very superficial treatment dawns when you are several hundred pages in and it's still the early 80's. Very disappointing as Elton had a very popular and successful period during the mid-80's and several top albums and great tours were glossed over. The last 10 years fairs even worse - it appears a superficial update to cash in on EJ's Knighthood status. Even the well publicised friendship with the Princess of Wales is hardly touched. Pity 'cause I enjoyed particularly the coverage of the 70's ...

3 out of 5 stars Only for the casual fan, REAL fans will find this tedious........2001-01-25

W Martin (WMPuppet@aol.com) from United States , January 24, 2001 Only for the casual fan, REAL fans will find this tedious. For the casual fan, there is no better book on the life and career of Sir Elton John than this. However, for any serious fan this "updated" re-issue is a waste. Mr. Norman never did appear to have his heart in writing the original and ten years later all he has managed to add is about a half dozen pages of quotes from Elton's stepmother Edna Dwight, who he secured an interview, following the death of Elton's father Stanley. Mrs. Dwights reflections, including a picture and some letters between father and son, are very interesting. They shed a very different light on her late husband's relationship with Elton, from the version Elton has given through the years. But that's it.

Mr. Norman has come up with NOTHING on Elton's breakup with longtime manager John Reid. He merely includes what has been reported in the tabloid press. (Mr. Norman's idea of research?) While this story is still evolving, as any industry insider will tell you, it's dynamite. A book in and of itself. An author with the ego of Philip Norman's should be ashamed for releasing an updated version without including the REAL story regarding Mr. Reid. But then again, this is the same author who released the book in it's original form without including any information on Elton's multiple addictions that nearly cost him his life. Everyone in the business was fully aware of the situation at the time, yet Mr. Norman's reaction was one of total shock, learning of the condition when Elton went public after the books initial release.

The book in it's first printing, while giving a good overview of Elton's life and career was riddled with errors, including misquotes, wrong dates and fabrications. (In particular, events pertaining to Elton's career in the U.S.) These errors were made known at the time, to both author and publisher. As far as I can tell, NONE have been corrected.

As for Elton's quote "He's got me spot on", that the publisher is so fond of including in ads, well, Elton did say this. However, Elton was referring to what Mr. Norman descrbes as "Elton's little moments", not the book as a whole. At the time he invited Philip Norman to his London residence for tea, Elton had not yet read the entire book. He said at the time that he was only half through it. Elton is also on record as being very angry that Mr. Norman took what was intended to be a private discussion and included the transcript as an additional chapter in the paperback editions that followed. Ironically, it's the only accurate chapter Mr. Norman's tome has.

This is all truly disappointing. At 581 pages and as the title itself promises, this should have been "The Definitive" Sir Elton John bio. Unfortunately, it is not.

                              Book Description

In Yankele: A Holocaust Survivor's Bittersweet Memoir, Alex (Yankele) Gross tells the tale of his life as a Hungarian boy amidst the turmoil of World War II Europe. Beginning with his childhood in the village of Palanok, Alex recalls happy memories nestled in the bosom of family and friends. His peaceful existence is soon disrupted, however, when his community is rounded up and placed in a ghetto, and later when he and his family are deported to Auschwitz. Here Alex vividly depicts the horror of his imprisonment at the camp, his forced march to Gleiwitz, and his ride on the flat car to Buchenwald - a journey that has been similarly immortalized by Elie Wiesel's Night. His subsequent liberation, while rendering him free to reunite with his surviving siblings in Prague, sets in his path the difficulties inherent in beginning a new life. After moving to England, where he begins his practical education under the guidance of his adoptive family, Alex finally makes his way to America where he becomes a successful business and family man. Tragedy soon follows, however, with the loss of his teenage son and then the murder of his first wife. Notwithstanding this, Yankele endures as a story of happiness, revealing the depths of faith, courage and honor - in spite of the odds - of this modern-day Job.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful biography of a Holocaust survivor........2002-09-25

I read this book because the author writes about his experience before and during the Holocaust. he comes from the city of Mukachevo in western Ukraine. My parents are from this region and I have a strong interest in this area and its people. His description of Jewish life in this area before the war is wonderful. This is also a well-told and powerful Holocaust memoir. He and his six siblings miraculously all survived the death camps of Auschwitz.

The majority of the book, however, is about his post-Holocaust experiences and his family life up to 1983. He was a moderately successful businessman in the United States who was involved in partnerships with his brothers. He talks about his wife and four children and his business successes and failures. These are hardly memorable topics. However, he brings such a sincere and ethical perspective to his story and makes these simple things of daily life interesting to read about. As a non-Jew, I find this book a wonderful outline of the positive ethical values of the Jewish religion as revealed in the life of one Jewish family.
