Excellent Book!!!! This book was a required reading for my Modern Social Theory course. I didn't think I would enjoy it, however, I absolutely loved it! As one other reviewer notes, it's incredibly poorly written. The info is not new, not helpful, not... well, let's just say I saw it a conventional (offline, independent) bookstore, thought it was a cute title, and, being as short on time that day as I almost always am short on sleep, I didn't leaf through it before buying it. MISTAKE!

I really resented paying money for this piece of self-congratulatory-ness. I'm glad the author found something that worked for him, I'm glad he suffered and then interrupted the cycle: hooray for anyone who does that, in any area of life. But it sure didn't do anything for me, and didn't tell me anything I didn't know.

Aggravating waste of trees.

Wiedman has actually included a treatment program that an insomniac can follow and actually attain good results! This is not a book for snoring or sleep apnea. I would encourage those with insomnia to read this book and follow the instructions. You will be amazed at how much better you feel after a good night's sleep.

Unbelievably poorly written but does have some good ideas.

In the appendix there is a comment from someone who claims they're a literary agent and that the writing is superb. I would surmise the person is not a successful literary agent.

I've had insomnia for many years & have taken many different anti-depressants for all those years. I received the book not long ago. I agree this is a book with both serious and humorous sides of sleep disorders. There are different things people can do to help with sleep problems-easy to understand and follow.

I read this book in a desperate attempt to alleviate the chronic insomnia that had plauged me since the birth of my daughter. It was the only book of it's kind (I purchased two others) that made me feel genuine hopefulness about my condition. Mr. Wiedman does not make light of insomnia - to the contrary, he sincerely understands what you are going through. This man has been through some truly hard times and you can sense his compassion and desire to help others. This is what sets the book apart.
I both laughed and cried while reading this book; it is very cathartic and reads like a novel at times. Although you may find other books containing more technical information, this book will give you that human touch that no other can provide. My insomnia is gone, and even better, I no longer feel anxious about the occasional sleepless night.
THANK YOU Mr. Wiedman, you have helped me tremendously. I cannot reccomend this book highly enough to anyone struggling with sleep.

I bought this book because I am an avid quilter. I wanted to see what quilts had to do with cooking. The book turned out to be so many things that delight me. I enjoyed the stories about famous African Americans. The recipes are great because, with the low calorie ingredients, you can have soul food without guilt. The quilts are displayed with a bit of quilt history and a glimpse into the soul of the quilter. I reach for this book again and again.

Interesting collection.......2002-03-16

I'm not a huge fan of soul food, but really like this cookbook nevertheless. The recipes were submitted by members of the council and are terrific. Importantly, the authors made efforts to cut out much of the fat from the recipes and did a great job.

I also really enjoy the stories that are interspersed throughout the book. A number of prominent African-Americans share their memories of Dorothy Height and recount times that they shared a meal with her. One word of caution - the recipe for Hoppin' John calls for 2 pounds of brown rice...I think this is a typo and perhaps should read 2 cups. I ended up with a HUGE vat of rice with a few black eye peas. Otherwise, a very fine collection!

Another Winner for the Council.......2001-01-01

I've enjoyed owning The Black Family Reunion Cookbook for many years, not only for its excellent recipes but also for the many narratives.

Once again, the Council has issued a winner. The recipes I've tried out of this new book have worked as well as their original cookbook. Actually, I didn't notice that these recipes are supposed to be 'healthier' until I began to write this review!

I've particularly enjoyed the black-eyed pea soup, the mustard greens and potato soup, and the collard greens and turkey wings. The pound cake recipe is standard, but the pear upside-down cake is terrific. The banana oatmeal cookies will be a hit for you. The chicken broccoli casserole is yummy!

I could go on, but I'll just say that every recipe I've tried has worked well. This is good home-style cooking, nothing too fancy, and the recipes are well written.

However, it's the stories and parables running through the book that make it special. I've always been a fan of Ms. Bethune, and the narratives here about her are particularly enjoyable.

This book is not only excellent, but it's also an excellent buy!

Great soul food without the guilt!.......1999-05-17

I purchased this cookbook 3 years ago, just on a whim. To my suprise, it's been one of the best investments I've ever made. My family loves the recipes! They remind me of the meals my grandmother used to make. Wonderful collard greens, cooked with smoked turkey wings, instead of hamhocks or salt pork; tasty oven-fried chicken breasts; mouthwatering barbecue chicken; and an array of great dessert recipes. The recipes are easy, and the nutritional information lets you know you're eating healthy. This is one book in my collection that never has time to get dusty.

This book is hands down the greatest handwriting book i have encountered (i have had at one time or the other more than 8 handwriting books). It is inspring and the results are clearly evident. He doesn't just stop at his book, he goes above and beyond in making you grow as a writer by recommending so other materials and books along the way. My writing has improved drastically (according to other people). One guy in my business college said my writing was the best he had ever seen. GET THIS BOOK NOW.

Calligraphy made easy.......2004-11-07

I am a beginner calligrapher taking classes, and my instructor is using the Fred Eager method of Italic and cursive writing. Since this book is out of print, I was determined to try and find a used copy, which I did, and I am thrilled to have a copy in my possession. I now don't have to ruin my eyes using bad copies and the book is in really good condition so that I am improving with every class and every homework assignment. A beautiful book and method for those who have an interest in improving their penmanship and producing beautifully written text.

A good workbook.......2002-11-13

As a child, I learned cursive script while my peers in the local public school were learning italic (a far prettier way of writing, I thought). When I ran across a used copy of this in a bookstore last summer, I remembered that old childhood jealousy and started working my way through the exercises.

As far as I can tell, this is a good book on italics. It's well suited to the adult who is not comfortable with calligraphy, as it drags you through the details of each letter several times and gives lots of space to practice. By the time it gets to capital letters there is less space provided to practice on the page, but you will have gained enough expertise by then to practice on your own lined paper. I'm about done with the small letters now, and have used my italic writing a few times already for notes included with gifts; it's quite presentable, certainly much more beautiful than my normal handwriting, so I'm very satisfied with the book overall.

My only complaint would be the book's lack of detail on what sort of edged pen is required for the later exercises where you need a pen suited to calligraphy (the letter shapes are taught first, and can be learned using pencil or felt-tip pen). I have not yet been able to find a pen of the same width as the exercises.

This "Codename: Kids Next Door" book is a real must have for all KND fans and wannabes.

My dear friend Fiona from Newcastle turned me on to the Manics in 1991 and their first San Francisco show the following year (in the wake of the L.A. riots) remains one of the most powerful I've seen. How fitting, then, that Fiona should send me this book in my Christmas package. Simon Price makes a compelling story even more so with his riveting writing style, lust for detail, insightful analyses, and insider's view. He whisks the reader from Blackwood bedrooms to the world stage and misses nothing along the way, thank God. Who better to even attempt to take on such a task than Price, a gifted writer whose love for the band imbues the story but who can also provide objectivity and constructive criticism?
Buy this book if you're mad on the Manics and just try to put it down. Buy this book if you're a casual fan or have never heard of them and see what you've been missing.

My truth.......2002-12-31

I don't think I can add very much to what the previous reviewers have written regarding the book. However, contrary to what others have said I disagree that Price being so close to the band and having witnesssed many of the events is a bad thing. Golly that's why it's so great. Price has achieved a level of understanding on the manics through his "being there" few will ever surpass. He is a true fan. Regarding the reviewers bias charge I find the author not guilty. He lends equal weight to both positive and negative attributes of individual band members. The last thirty pages he rightfully laments the manics easy transformation in to a rather impersonal stadium rock act. Overall a well written and objective account of this once important band's history.

Unbeknownst to nearly all American rock fans, Britain's Manic Street Preachers had already carved out an untouchable place for themselves in rock 'n' roll history by the mid-nineties while the tepid, unthreatening chords of the Dave Matthews Band and Hootie and the Blowfish emanated from placid US airwaves. The Manic Street Preachers originally comprised four childhood friends who'd grown up together in rustic Blackwood, Wales, a mining town beset by constant hard times. The adolescent preachers found solace from small-town boredom in the pages of NME, wherein the escapades of Guns 'n' Roses and Public Enemy were recounted in the kind of star-making grandiose language that spurs fifteen-year-olds from playing air-guitar in the bathroom mirror, into playing the real thing in front of sixty-thousand adoring fans.

Sensing that greatness lie ahead, the Manics officially became a band in late 1989 after bassist Nicky Wire and rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards completed university. Coining some pungent epigrams along the way ("Smash Hits is more effective in polluting minds than Goebbels ever was"), the Manics boasted to the music press that they'd record one sole album that would outsell Appetite for Destruction, and then split up (neither forecast came true, thankfully). The Manics recorded three classic albums that lyrically captured the Sartrean nausea and valuelessness of post-theistic existence better than any of their predecessors, before Edwards (who's usually credited with writing their bleakest songs) putatively committed suicide. An interesting tale to be certain, if told by an objective biographer, which Simon Price (among other things) isn't.

The Manic's biographer Simon Price, whose naked partiality towards the band -- he rarely criticises anything the band says or does, regardless of how stupid it is -- and superfical explications of the albums stand in the way of this biography being considered excellent by any aesthetic standards. For instance, was it absolutely necessary for Price, who coincidentally shares the same leftist proclivities as the band, to uncritically endorse the band's political views every ten pages or so? (Price even describes communism at one point as a "beautiful dream.") Moreover, Price repeatedly hangs on to the words of each band member like they're gold. In short, the fawning Price makes his biography look like a deliberate PR tool for the band rather than an objective account of the band's history, influences and ideas.

Price also puts his embarrassing lack of critical analysis on display when he discusses the band's albums. His interpretations of Gold Against the Soul and The Holy Bible are ludicrously simplistic, which he just says were reflections of Edwards' mood at the time. And of course a guy who's a self-mutilating alcoholic isn't going to have nice things running through his head; but the question of why he behaved that way is a subject Price almost completely shuns. About the closest Price comes to providing a window with which to peer into Edwards' tortured mind is a quote by lead vocalist James Dean Bradfield, claiming that Edwards' condition might be linked to the fact that he never had any serious relationship. The real answer, however, lies in Edwards' atheistic worldview, which says that life, ending at the grave, is without ultimate significance (thus explaining the band's frequent use of the word "despair"). That Price didn't make this connection testifies to his poor critical skills.

Nevertheless, I recommend this biography for its wealth of information about the band. If there's anything you wanted to know about the band, it's in here.

Definatley the best book on the manics available. Simon Price has an huge knowledge of the band, and as well as a general (and highly entertaining) biography this book also has a number of "essays" on things such as the manics and weslh nationalism, the manics and america and many others. A great read for anyone interested in what i (and many many others) consider to be the most important band of the 90's. My only problem is that Price' personal views on a number of things are a bid evident, but hell he spent the time writing the book so he can do that if he wants.

For the most part, this biography is a very well-crafted one; not rushed out on the tails of MSP becomming huge after "Everything Must Go" and even leads up to the release of "This Is My Truth..." An interesting aspect of this book is that the story is told in essay format instead of a chapter by chapter slog through a career of one of the greatest bands in the world today.

While at times a little too personal (Simon uses a lot of "I was there..." methods of relaying the story, which must have been some honour, but after a while it gets a little dull) it is incredibly hard not to keep reading until you've reached the end.

There is some information that is fresh, while obvious topics keep coming up over and over spread out over the pages. While MSP are undoubtedly allowed their own privacy, you would think someone as close to the band would be able to print more details, thoughts, and feelings.

Still, this isn't a dirt sheet like the majority of MSP books on the market, and the money spent will be worthwhile, if only to catch yourself thinking "Hey, I remember when that happened." during the read.

Not the best writing ever, but it is posibly one of the best stories. It is an amazing storry of a man's journy back to his family and what kept him alive in a time of death.
