Book Description
This riveting family saga about the son of a Polish-Jewish immigant to Canada is told in 17 short stories that blend tragedy and humor. The overarching figure is Jacob, who loses his mother at three and is raised by his stepmother. His father, from an orthodox Jewish home in Lodz, escapes from the Polish army under bizarre circumstances and searches for a place to settle. After a stint in Germany and Palestine as a chalutz (pioneer), he tries to settle in the US but is hounded as an illegal immigrant and finally finds a home in Montreal, where Jacob is born and bred. After high school, Jacob tries working in his father’s printing shop but finds business not appealing. His parents give him violin lessons, and as a teenager he studies music seriously. Near the end of World War II, Jacob begins his academic career, receiving his BA at McGill and his PhD at Princeton. His mentors are two prominent neuropsychologists and his professional career is rich with anecdotes. After a ‘sexual apprenticeship,’ he marries Raquel and has four children. The tragic deaths of Raquel, first and then of his eldest daughter shatter the family. Jacob divorces twice before finding happiness with his present wife.
Book Description
In 1999, after almost twenty years of symptoms, Montel Williams, a decorated naval officer and Emmy Award-winning talk show host, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He was struck with denial, fear, depression, and anger, and now he's battling back. Graced with strong values, courage, and hard-won wisdom, he shares his insights in this powerful book on the divergent roads a life can take, and recounts how he rose to meet the challenges he's faced. Surprising, searing, and deeply personal, Climbing Higher is as honest and inspiring as its author.
Customer Reviews:
Great read!.......2007-09-23
I have known for many years bits and pieces of Montel's story. I find his battle interesting. He gives me inspiration with all he struggles with daily. Since I facilatate a Support Group for MS I am always looking for inspiration and like to learn from others. I shared the book with my group.
Have read all Montel's books..........2007-06-19
I liked this book the BEST out of all Montel William's books!! It was a very personal story that can help a lot of people.
I recommend this book, especially if you love Montel.
Climbing Higher by Montel Williams.......2007-05-27
Climbing Higher This is a must read for anyone who has MS or has a friend or family member with MS. Montel Williams explains exactly how some of us feel and we don't know how to explain it to other people. There were parts in this book where I said out loud, "This is ME and I'm not alone in how I feel"!!! What a great feeling to know that you are not the only one who has these symptoms and exacerbations of this dreaded disease. It's fast reading and I've read it twice and the book is nearby to read it again. I'm also offering it to other people to read to try to understand my health problems.
I highly recommend this book!!!
CLIMBING HIGHER.......2007-05-22
I WAS JUST DIAGNOSED WITH MS A FEW MO0NTHS AGO. I REALLY ENJOYED READING MONTEL'S BOOK. HE WAS SAYING A LOT OF WHAT I AM FEELING, BUT DID NOT KNOW HOW TO TELL ANYONE. I AM HAVING MY FAMILY READ THIS, AND MAYBE THEY WILL UNDERSTAND SOME OF WHAT I FEEL.
Climbing Higher.......2007-05-15
Excellent! Written in such a manner that all can understand what goes on in the life of someone suffering from MS.
Book Description
The practice of mentoring is often in the current public dialogue of education. And the process of achieving tenure is an area particularly in need of "a wise and loyal advisor."
Mentor in a Manual, in its 3rd edition, has been a trusted guide for many new faculty members as they begin their academic careers. it is often used as a parting gift to graduates from advisors or major professors. And it serves as a resource for senior faculty as they practice their own mentoring.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read for Junior Professors.......2005-01-17
Although the latest edition is 1994, this remains an important book for new professors. It is the most comprehensive text for junior professors that I have seen. As a clinical psychologist and tenure coach, I recommend this resource to all the professors and postdocs with whom I work. The authors' extensive experience and thorough review of the literature makes for a treasure chest of useful information. They cover everything from the politics of your institution and department, to teaching, research and publishing, to creating your dossier for the tenure decision. They give practical, helpful advice -- the kind of advice that as the tenure decision approaches you will be thankful you had.
Book Description
·For climbers who know the basics and are ready to venture higher
·Written by longtime guides and climbing instructors certified by the American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA)
·Teaches situational thinking and learning as well as technique
This intermediate-level guide addresses tools, skills, and techniques used in alpine terrain including rock, snow, ice, and glaciers at moderate altitude-approximately 5000 meters (16,000 feet) and lower. The technical protection systems are covered, of course. But 30 years of alpine climbing experience has convinced the authors that mastery-and safety-lie in the far more difficult task of knowing exactly which techniques to use, where and when. Therefore, they teach step-by-step decision-making skills, providing scenarios, checklists, and self-posed questions to inform the decision process.
Alpine Climbing assumes some prior knowledge, primarily in rock climbing skills and techniques. Basic knots, belaying, rappelling, building rock anchors, leading, placing rock protection, and movement skills on rock: variations of these skills that are of particular value in the alpine environment are addressed in this book.
Customer Reviews:
good book, well thought out.......2006-03-28
I agree with the reviewers above (below) that this book complements "Freedom of the Hills". In particular it focuses more on the decision making process than most books of these types. Although I've never traveled with either of the authors, they seem like lovely people and the stories they tell flesh them out for the reader. They also answered a question I had when I wrote them via email. In all, a solid book that it would do to put on your bookshelf.
Excellent book for anyone venturing into the mountains.......2005-11-16
The section on Common Problems with Decision Making was alone worthy the purchase!I could identify many issues and suggestions with my own experiences. Very well laid out book and a must read for anyone venturing into the sport of climbing, or those of us who wish to brush up on skills and ponder ways of continuous learning no matter the level of prior experience. One of definite climbing "bibles" written by people who do it for a living and are prepared to share their experiences and knowledge. Five stars IMHO!!! Happy climbing!
Must have for all aspiring and experienced climbers.......2005-10-24
A gem of a book for all aspiring and experienced climbers. Mark Houston and Kathy Cosley are highly respected working mountain guides. Their book is full of practical and modern advice based upon their years of climbing around the world. Climbers of every level will want this well written addition to their library.
Climb harder than Freedom of the Hills..........2005-08-10
...but not to the extreme.
This book is the second chapter in an aspiring alpinists handbook. I found myself over the years amassing a pile of pooks on running, fittness*, nutrition*, supplements*, advanced rock climbing, ice climbing, crevasse rescue, orienteering*, navigation*, avalanche evaluation, etc. This book would have saved me a few bucks by putting alot of this in one place.
* = These are covered well in this book.
If you know Freedom of the Hills like the back ouf your hand, have Extreme Alpinism and a good book on slightly more advanced rock skills, don't bother. If not, get it.
Even with this book, you need a resource of some sort in avy eval and advanced rock/rope skills.
Sweet spot between the basics and the extreme.......2004-12-28
This book hits the sweet spot between Freedom of the Hills and Mark Twight. Finally, a book for those of us who know the basics, maybe have done some guided mountaineering trips or novice routes, and already know how to rock climb, but need to know more in order to venture further on our own. The authors frame everything in terms of making decisions, which is very helpful when you are doing things for the first time. Good discussions of equipment, hazards, weather, navigation, and protective systems. The approach is very down to earth and practical.
Book Description
In this completely revised edition of a classic work, Houston examines the inter-relationships between humans, oxygen, and mountains. Beginning with what oxygen is and how we use it, Houston guides the reader through the latest understanding of the various types of mountain sickness, to acclimatization, prevention, and treatment.
Customer Reviews:
Qiuck delivery.......2005-10-02
The book was received quickly and there was no problems with the sender.
The Index alone is worth twice the book's low price.......2005-08-07
Probably the most elegant writer I've read who is a medical doctor, mountaineer, and renowned physiologist. Dr. Houston knows what it actually means to climb high mountains where the air is thin, oxygen molecules are few and far between, and the environment sometimes too difficult to imagine. This is where a great writer comes into his/her own. If you're considering "going higher" don't leave home without Houston!
Some useful stuff. Back to basics and history........2001-02-23
As someone with a general scientific background, I found this book high on padding and relatively low on the content I wanted and was expecting - the author spends much time on the history of the subject and on the basic properties of air, leaving little space for details on the physiology and medical side of the subject. I have no medical education or qualifications, though I still found much of the actual medical text in the book over simplified and lacking in detail.
Excellent book on the effects of altitude.......2000-06-14
This is a revised and expanded version of "Going Higher". The author has added additional text and illustrations. It is now even better than previous editions. Like Dr. Houston, I carry my altimeter with me on airplane flights. His observations match mine. Little do most passengers realize that the atmospheric pressure in the cabin may be the equivalent of the atmosphere at 7000 to 9000 feet.
Dr. Houston has written an excellent book on the effects of altitude on people. He reviews the history of mountain exploration, explains the physiological effects of the reduction of atmospheric pressure, and presents a practical guide for acclimitization to altitude. Whether you are going to ski in the Rockies or climb in the Himilayas, this is a useful and entertaining book. I also recommend "Altitude Illness" by Bezruchka

More great stories.......2007-03-13
This is the third book in the Pathway Publishers 2nd grade series. The stories are slightly longer and the print is a tad smaller than in the two previous books: "Busy Times" and "More Busy Times". Stories are set in rural (Amish) farming community. My son was very intrigued by these books.

Amazing value, amazing recipes.......2005-08-12
I've had this book for about a week and I've already made 3 recipes from it. Everything has been delicious and it has been a great read. Even the recipes I don't want to try "as is", I can see being a source of inspiration. By far the best cookbook I've bought and you certainly can't beat the price.
Title speaks for itself.......2004-11-26
As more information trickles into the media about the pitfalls of the Atkin's diet (coronary heart disease, muscle breakdown, kidney problems), I looked for a cookbook with healthy balanced recipes. I've recently stopped dieting and started following Marilu Henner's "Healthy Lifestyle" approach and this book is a great compliment to the basis of her plan (except for the recipes with dairy and red meat but these can be easily subsituted). You will find that the recipes in Raichlen's cookbook are full of flavor and a great staple to any kitchen, no matter what your tastes. I've tried quite a few recipes since buying this cookbook a couple months ago and every single one of them has been delicious! Under the Marilu plan, this cookbook and Yoga I have dropped 2 sizes in a month -- I'm back down to a size 4!
Mouthwatering recipes from around the world.......2004-04-21
This cookbook has become a staple in our kitchen. Every recipe I've tried is excellent and I've enjoyed making them for my family and friends. My friends kept asking for the recipes so I purchased extra books to give as gifts. A great resource and is full of many, many great recipes instead of two or three that are in most of my other cookbooks. The most flavorful dishes I've found.
Pitiful.......2004-04-11
I don't actually believe this was Raichlen, at least not the guy who wrote the Barbecue Bible. If Raichlen did write this, could someone tell me who wrote the BBQ bible?
One hopes we can blame this on the ghost writers, who are competing with Taste of Home for the kind of crude home cooking some people actually struggle through. I don't even think a self-respecting cheeto-chewin Oprah watcher would find any value in this mess of a book.
It had the gross misfortune of coming out just before its high-carb, high-calorie "healthy" food was declared null and void by the Atkins crowd, and it thus falls into a canyon of uselessness. It doesn't have the flavor and profundity of the BBQ Bible yet it isn't worth the sacrifice on any other dimension.
The usual cardinal sins are committed, including extremely heavily styled food...to the point of making you feel inept or squint at the recipe for what it left out between what's on your plate and what's pictured glossily.
A bargain is a bargain and they are trying to burn these for firewood at this point I'm sure.
A wealth of recipes for healthy yet tasty delights.......2004-02-08
Illustrated with mouth-watering color photography, Steven Raichlen's Big Flavor Cookbook is the brainchild of a renowned restaurant critic and journalist turned expert and innovative cook. Compiling a wealth of recipes for healthy yet tasty delights ranging from Fisherman's Stew; Tuscan Roast Pheasant; and Cider-Glazed Turnips; to Balinese Banana Split; Chicken Poached with Star Anise; and Grilled Snapper with Avocado Sauce, Steven Raichlen's Big Flavor Cookbook is a true and highly recommended volume of culinary delights blending straightforward recipe instructions with sound information concerning calories, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, sodium, and cholesterol in each serving.
Book Description
To a collector, there is no joy parallel to finding that elusive home-run ball, or a jersey worn by a legendary player. Smithsonian Baseball: Inside the World's Finest Private Collections celebrates the abiding passion for our national pastime, as witnessed by the dedication of the sport's most devoted collectors.
The first book of its kind, Smithsonian Baseball features revealing stories and lavish photography highlighting 21 of the best private collections of baseball memorabilia in existence. From a rare copy of the first written rules of the game (1848) to Mark McGwire's record-shattering home-run ball (1998), these impressive collections span baseball's entire history. Some of the game's most historically significant artifacts are part of these private collections, yet most have never before been seen by the public. Marvel at the memorabilia as you read about the historical background of the objects and get to know each collector's passions and motivations. Some of the collections are all-encompassing; others focus on a specific era or type of memorabilia -- game-used bats, for example, or folk art, or celluloid pin-back buttons. One collection features only relics and memorabilia from the grand old ballparks of the past; another comprises items from overseas exhibition tours of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some of the most valuable vintage photographs and advertising displays as well as the most sought-after baseball cards are in these collections, including the famous T206 Honus Wagner, the highest professionally graded set of 1915 Cracker Jacks, and a gem-mint condition 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle. A father-daughter collecting duo has an impressive collection of World Series scorecards and programs, dating back to the inaugural series in 1903.
The book also includes seven "tips" essays. The hobby's leading experts offer advice on collecting and authenticating artifacts, and show how to build and organize your own impressive 19th-century memorabilia or baseball card collection. Weigh the benefits of having a general collection versus a very narrow one. Find out how to store and display your collectibles. Learn to distinguish between an original first-generation photograph versus a wire photo, a vintage jersey worn at home games as opposed to one worn on the road, a player's game-used bat and one made for retail sale -- and much, much more. It's the perfect gift for any baseball fan, young or old, a baseball collectible in its own right.

Smiothsonian Baseball.......2007-03-12
I purchased this as a gift and the recipient was thrilled with it. I did sneak a peak before giving it away and enjoyed it immencely.
Smithsonian Baseball.......2007-03-08
A very well done book. Big glossy pictures of some of the greatest Baseball artifacts in America. Probably the closest I will get to seeing these in person.
1 picture is worth..................2007-01-04
As a lover of the old days of baseball (prior to the 1970's) , and with an interest in various types of artifacts pertaining to the old days, this book wonderfully broadened my horizons. The sections on baseball cards was especially fascinating for me as i do some collecting to add to some as i had as a kid (50's-60's).
would recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in the old days of baseball or collects baseball memorabilia.
Yes, It's Beautiful, but It's Smart, Too.......2006-09-01
Stephen Wong has created a drop-dead gorgeous look at some of the game's great artifacts, and many will be surprised to learn that they are not at the Baseball Hall of Fame nor even at the Smithsonian (despite the book's title). The game's artifacts extend way beyond the cards and gimcrack collectibles sold at the ballpark, and Wong has deftly toggled his focus from collectible to collector and back again, providing a memorable prose portrait of the lively game played off the field. I cannot recommend this brilliantly conceived book highly enough.
The Ultimate Coffee-Table Book.......2006-03-11
This beautiful book belongs in every baseball enthusiast's library, but it would be a mistake to keep it on the shelves. Author Stephen Wong has partnered with the Smithsonian to publish the most stunning book on baseball on the market. It deserves to be on your coffee table not only because of its wonderful photographs but also due to the wonderfully rich way he presents the history of the game. Wong gained remarkable access to the sport's foremost collectors, combing through hundreds of images and memorabilia items. The payoff is tremendous for anyone with an interest in baseball or, for that matter, in American history and culture. Readers will learn the essential facts about the game, and the fascinating tidbits, such as the origins of the curve ball. They then get to see remarkable shots, some most unusual - from folk art statues to Don Larsen's enshrined shoes from his perfect game to the bricks of former stadiums. In fact, this book should be placed in the Hall of Fame!

Pprecise instructions.......2007-08-23
This is my first book on gift wrapping, and I couldn't have made a better choice. Instructions were very precise and easy to follow.
So good that my copy was stolen.......2007-06-10
I'm guessing that this book is good. My mother 'stole' my copy before I had a chance to look and won't give it back.
Golden award for this book!.......2007-03-14
Now this is a book you really must have!
If your in to gift wrapping, this is your guide. Many examples, matching photo's, clear instructions. Everything you need to know is in here.
Both gift wrapping itself plus bow making techniques are comprehensively explained.
I'd say: If you wish to gift yourself, buy this book!
very detailed .......2006-04-06
Filled with step by step photos. Most useful were: how to wrap a melon, polygon and triangle, how to make 7+ different kinds of bows from ribbon and how to wrap a wine bottle. The last tip is especially useful since I never liked the look of those wine bottle gift bags.
With this book, I will not be afraid of buying nice but oddly shaped gifts. Overall it's a compact technical primer but dont expect anything innovative or overly artsy.
Utilizes explicit step-by-step instructions.......2004-05-03
Quick & Easy Enchanting Gifts Wrapping by Yoshiko Hase utilizes explicit step-by-step instructions (enhanced with both black-and-white and color photographs), to display every individual step of wrapping gifts in a stunningly impressive, professional-quality manner. From seasonal wrapping, to streamlined tips for saving time and waste, to recommended holiday themes, 149 sample items, and more, Quick & Easy Enchanting Gifts Wrapping is a truly first-class instructional and a "must-have" for any gift-giver determined to give their presents and gifts an extraordinary, eye-catching appeal.

Book Description
He was the embodiment of the sun-drenched California dream, a sandy-haired sex symbol that sparked a cultural tidal wave. Surfer, lover, drummer, Beach Boy. His life was a short, brilliant, intoxicating ride that inevitably curled into a torturous spiral of addiction and despair. Profoundly gifted but destructively wild, Dennis Wilson was dead at age 39, drowning quietly while his influence made millions for others. Volumes have been written about the troubled past of Dennis's older brother Brian Wilson and his amazing impact on the history of popular music. But Dennis Wilson: The Real Beach Boy tells for the first time the staggering tale of the freewheeling brother who fired Brian's imagination and permanently influenced the Beach Boys' sound, style, and attitude. While Brian stayed in his room, brother Dennis hurled himself at life with an unquenchable lust for action. From surfing teenager to drag-racing daredevil, from his legendary sexual appetite to his chilling friendship with mass murderer Charles Manson, this biography follows the hair-raising trail blazed by the real Beach Boy.
Customer Reviews:
Get this book back in print!!!.......2004-04-09
This is an important book for the rock music scene as it highlights the life of Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys. Not only does the book do a stunning job laying out the life and times of Dennis Wilson but it dives head first into the world of 60's and 70's rock and determines his role in these crazy years for the music scene.
This book does what many rock books fail to do which is to tell an honest to God story saying both the good and the bad but putting it all out on the table so that the tale is properly told.
For example, this book examines Dennis Wilson's role within the Beach Boy hierarchy and finds that he was treated poorly by people like Mike Love who didn't have half his talent. The author mourns the loss to the world of music that Love and others in the Beach Boys caused by constantly thwarting Dennis as he tried to get his music out in the public.
The book also honestly finds that Dennis was his own worst enemy by using drugs and booze which effectively short circuited his talent causing yet another loss for music lovers as we never got to hear the complete catalogue of his real creativity.
Finally, the book looks at what Dennis Wilson did do musicially and finds it amazing. His epic 70's solo LP "Pacific Ocean Blue" will rank as one of the real rock gems as time goes on. The author reviews this LP and tells how incredible it was and how it continues to grow in popularity with rock fans as the years move on.
This book is out of print which is sad as there are precious few publications like it. Buy it used and read one of the best rock tales ever but more importantly read it to learn just how profound Dennis Wilson was in his talent and his times.
Get this book back in print!
Warts-and-all tale of the Beach Boys' "fossil fuel".......2002-11-08
Having just read this book for, what, the third time, I was struck by the author's effort to portray every aspect of the Beach Boys' only genuine surfer. Dennis Wilson lived large, and was rarely accorded the respect he deserved as his musical gifts as a solo artist emerged and matured. I did not find a copy of his 1977 album "Pacific Ocean Blue," or the posthumous release of "Bamboo" until after reading Stebbins' book. These albums should be re-released so that they may reach a wider audience of Dennis' fans, old and new.
The tragedy of Dennis Wilson's death at thirty-nine was not unexpected, given his long and tortuous history of substance abuse. However, Stebbins neither over- or underdramatizes Denny's demons, including his passing friendship with the Charles Manson family (who systematically drained Wilson of more than $100,000).
Had Wilson lived longer, who knows what artistic heights he might have scaled? However, we should be grateful that he blazed across the American music scene like a comet, and that its glow is still with us. Stebbins deserves a lot of credit for assembling such vivid interviews with those close to Dennis, most of which were not drawn from other Beach Boys biographies/hagiographies.
Best Book about Denny so far!.......2002-04-05
Loved it. Jon Stebbins did a wonderful job capturing the true Dennis Wilson.
Loved Every Minute of This Book!.......2001-11-29
I was only a casual fan of the Beach Boys...more of a Beatle, Byrd, CSN, Eagles-type musically, but as of late have become very appreciative of the middle era of the Beach Boys. I picked up this book because I like the "Real Beach Boy" title and because a friend of mine had meet Dennis one year while skiing up in Utah and said what a nice guy he was. Of all the Beach Boys, Dennis was the most colorful and the one who would make for the most interesting story. The author did a fabulous job making this such an enjoyable and well-researched read. I wish there was a way to hear some of the music that Dennis recorded, but I don't think they are on CD. Anyways, if you are a fan of surfing, music, or the California sound, then this is a book worth reading. The Beatle and the Stones got so much more adultation, when here underneath our noses in Southern California was a band (especially creatively) that was a near equal.
Excellent Book.......2001-09-05
This is an excellent book about Dennis Wilson, the only thing is I wish it had been longer! Dennis had such a full, interesting life that I'm sure it could easily have been twice as long. One nice thing about it is it talks a lot about just what songs Dennis actually wrote, co-wrote, and sang on. There are many more than most people are aware of, and this book highlights them all. It would have been nice to have them listed in the back, but at least the info is in there. If you're a Dennis fan, or a Beach Boys fan, this is a must read. Dennis was the ultimate beach boy and he was a warm, caring human being. This book presents that side of him beautifully. And while he was only with us for a short time, he crammed a lot of life in 39 short years.
