Moment by moment account of the scene in North Korea.......2005-05-12
What a riveting, interesting book. I felt like I was there with the author in the action, bullets whizzing by my ears. The photographs and copies of actual letters made it even more real. Great read.

Customer Reviews:
A real winner - solid information, with practical, inspirati.......2004-10-20
Having suffered from panic disorder and phobias on and off for about 15 years,I have seen lots of therapists and read lots of books, none of which touched me like Triumph Over Fear. The author, Jerilyn Ross, is the first person I've encountered who combines both the knowledge of someone who has successfully worked with patients for over 20 years with the empathy and compassion of someone who has been there herself. As I read through Jerilyn's personal story and the various case studies of patients whom she has treated I realized that in spite of what well meaning therapists or authors can teach me about panic attacks, only someone who has experienced the irrational, seemingly out-of control spiralling of an attack can give me the assurance and confidence I needed to move forward. In addition, the self-help portion of the book gave me specific, practical things to work on by myself and with my therapist - which ultimately lead me to making wonderful personal progress. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from panic attacks as well as to family members trying to understand their loved ones' condition.
Easiest to relate to book on fear.......2004-01-31
I've been dealing with an anxiety problem for about 10 years now, only I have been doing it the wrong way with countless drugs given to me by my doctor. There comes a crossroads when you just can't do it like that anymore. I spent the past 3 years getting off the drugs that have done more harm than good and am now learning what I should have learned in the beginning. I have read a ton of books on this disorder and to be honest, some of them you feel the need to have a dictionary beside you they are so complex. The writers forget they are writing the book for people who are not familiar with medical terminology in their everyday lives. Triumph Over Fear is different from the rest in many ways. First, it is easy to understand for just about anyone and is clearly written. Most importantly, it isn't written by someone who has merely studied the problem but has never actually felt what it's like to go through it. It makes no difference how many medical books you have read, how many people you have met, how many letters you have added to the end of your professional name. Unless you've been through this problem you really cannot fully understand it. This author has and that makes her words that much more powerful. This book should be in everyone's home whether you are suffering currently with anxiety or deal with someone you are trying to help but just can't seem to understand why they feel the way they do. Don't wait as long as I did, your life is waiting but the freedom is in you.
In addition to this book, I recommend "Don't panic"-R. Reid Wilson/ and also "the anxiety and phobia workbook" those are more technical and extremely complete in every detail.
Well written and informative.......2003-06-14
This is a good book. It was referred to me by my psychiatrist for OCD. Although it did not address my issues and help me much with my needs, it did make me realize that my problems compare little to some of the issues and difficulties other people have! I liked the book very much and found it very encouraging and informative.
Covers all the bases.......2003-03-06
Having "been there, done that" (anxiety), I've read a lot of books about the subject and I can highly recommend Triumph Over Fear. It's an inspiring, motivating book that covers all the bases.
I'd been a professional speaker for many years, traveling throughout the country giving presentations and teaching classes, then I was in a car accident and became agoraphobic. I told myself that I'd give myself all the time that I needed to heal; I'd concentrate on my writing and not travel for a while. Giving myself time to heal was a great start--I had another book published during those years (and even had a "brush" with an Oprah producer who pitched the idea of having me on the show)--but it had become easier and easier to stay home. I needed to do more. I had to "work" the ideas in Jerilyn's book so I could get back in my car and drive to the mall and go to the movies and, finally, travel again.
Jerilyn shares her own experience with having had anxiety and having recovered from it, then addresses the various anxiety disorders-agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive, panic, post-traumatic stress, social phobia, and generalized anxiety-and gives case studies that illustrate each of them. She also discusses treatment options and shares good solid expertise, common sense, and proven exercises.
Being a writer myself, I loved her suggestion to keep a diary. I also liked the idea of labeling the anxiety and paying careful attention to the thoughts and behaviors that trigger it. I worked the program myself rather than with a therapist, although I did attend a peer support group for a while. And yes, it was a challenge to drive to those meetings, but they were so helpful and necessary! At one time my anxiety had become so pervasive that I found myself wondering who I'd be without it. Jerilyn even addresses that issue in the chapter, "Becoming Acquainted with the New You."
Today I'm feeling better than I have in years. Read Triumph Over Fear for a clearer understanding of anxiety and for the proven, practical guidelines for getting on with your life. - Kathleen Hawkins, president of winningspirit.com and author of Spirit Incorporated: How to Follow Your Spiritual Path from 9 to 5
From a woman who's been there........2001-10-16
I've read a lot of books on anxiety, and this is the best. Ross once suffered from an anxiety disorder herself and tried to find treatment, only to be told it was in her head. A lot has been learned about anxiety disorders even in the last ten years, and Ross knows all about it. She not only tells you about the treatment available through therapists (with contact information and resources at the back of the book) but if you want to do it yourself, the book is full of practical advice. I'm the author of the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, and I can tell you without any hesitation that Triumph Over Fear is self-help stuff at its best. I highly recommend this book. Buy one for yourself and share one with a friend or family member who may suffer without realizing help is available.
Book Description
The Bride and Groom's First Cookbook is indeed a first--the first modern and manageable teaching cookbook for young couples whose sophisticated tastes outdistance their kitchen skills and available time. And who better to provide such a book than Abigail Kirsch, who has been responsible for orchestrating thousands of weddings and engagement parties, who knows better than anyone the kinds of recipes and instructions young people need and want, and whom young people know and trust.
This easy-to-use teaching book is designed for young working couples who will be sharing the cooking and entertaining chores at home. The recipes, from Spinach and Pine Nut Pizzetta to Roasted Salmon in Horseradish Crust and Lemon Chicken with Capers, are designed to please the well-trained palate, but no culinary skill is assumed. Each recipe includes a list of necessary utensils, a clear set of do-ahead instructions, tips for serving, and variations. In addition, there is a section of complete menus for entertaining in a number of styles on different occasions, from a tailgate picnic to a formal dinner for in-laws or the boss. Each menu includes a timetable for completing all preparation chores and dividing them efficiently between two people. And last but not least, there are a glossary of cooking terms, a list of essential pantry ingredients, and a checklist for a bridal registry.
In short, The Bride and Groom's First Cookbook is an indispensable resource for busy young couples with more taste than time, who want to eat well and entertain with flair.

yummy.......2006-11-02
I received this book as a gift and I have used many of its recipes! Many of the recipes are things I would not have come up with on my own so it gave me the chance to try new things. My husband and I really like the horseradish salmon and mustard crusted lamb! If you can follow directions you can use this cookbook.
NOT AS GOOD AS OTHERS........2006-06-16
I purchased The Bride & Groom First and Forever Cookbook and loved it so I decided to try this one. The Bride and Groom's First Cookbook DOESN'T have pictures! The Bride and Groom First and Forever DOES. Because of the pictures in the latter, I felt compelled to try some of the dishes. They were great and have become part of my regular menus. This book, the Bride and Groom First Cookbook, may have several good recipes but it's more apt to end up dusty on the bookcase. I wasn't really pleased with a few of the recipes I read. Actually, they may be a bit to fancy for my taste and really didn't appeal to me. Others may really like them though. I'm just a basic food type of person. I like basic recipes with a little common flare.
For a more intimate present, you may want to try . . . .......2005-05-18
I am an avid, but amateur chef and am getting married in Fall 05. I've looked at a number of bride-groom cookbooks. So far, my favorite is NOT ON LOVE ALONE by Jessie Carry Saunders. It has a friendlier, more intimate tone than any of the others -- it feels like something written by a bride for other brides.
It has a friendly, appealing feel, like the author is in the kitchen with you, telling you stories about the recipes as she teaches you how to make them. Also, it's just a higher quality book -- it's a hard cover, the pages are nice and thick, and the watercolor illustrations on every page make the book seem like something you could display on your coffee table as easily as you could use it in the kitchen.
If you want a good cookbook, any of the various newlywed cookbooks will work fine. If you want an excellent present for a wedding or a bridal shower, my recommendation is NOT ON LOVE ALONE.
Um no thanks - totally old school!.......2003-08-01
This is soooooo not the first cookbook for newlyweds. Any well meaning guest who buys this for their bride and groom should really take a second to look through the recipes. Newlyweds and cooking are not a natural combination, if you know what I mean. Okay, call me crazy but if I open up a cookbook and most of the recipe titles have things I've never heard of in them, that spells trouble. The recipes are so 1980s - very foo-foo. What about healthy, quick, good food? And a little diversity in the recipes, please :)
Not for beginners.......2003-07-26
If you're a true beginning cook like me, this book will overwhelm you. I'm a working newlywed and eating three hours after I get home at 7pm just isn't going to work.
Some of the recipes are tempting, but overall they have lots of ingredients (some that i've never heard of or that are expensive to buy and then sit on the shelf) and take a long time to prepare/cook.
If I were having the parents over for brunch one Sunday, I may get up super early to surprise them with a meal from this book, but for everyday cooking, this cookbook is a disappointment. The "First" part of the title is misleading.
I'm looking for a BH&G type book but with modern recipes... hopefully I'll find what I'm looking for soon!

A good idea with poor execution.......2002-08-02
Having been a newlywed at one time, and having experienced many a bad meal, my wife and I have purchased more than enough cookbooks to fill a small library in an effort to improve our skills. We have made significant progress in the last seven years, unfortunately not to the credit of this book. The recipes are really not geared to an everyday lifestyle, nor are they very appetizing.
A wonderful beginning to any neophyte cookbook collection.......2002-03-25
In The Bride & Groom's Menu Cookbook, Abigail Kirsch, with the assistance of Susan Greenberg, presents a highly recommended collection of seasonally oriented, easy-to-prepare menus specifically designed to help couples to successfully cook and entertain together. From Golden Rice with Chiles; Saffron Risotto with Shrimp and Wild Mushrooms; and Braised Short Ribs of Beef with Caramelized Onion Horseradish Sauce; to Lemon-Scented Chickpea and Zucchini Salad; Lamb Braised with Cumin, Yogurt, and Garlic; and Banana Strawberry Rum Smoothie, The Bride & Groom's Menu Cookbook is a wonderful beginning to any neophyte cookbook collection for young couples.

Easier than you think.......2007-02-17
I saw two of these quilts at a retreat and immediately had to make one. I took a class, which was helpful but not essential. I made Brilliant Stars in the scheme of Turkish tiles and it's spectacular, just a knockout. I then bought the second book, Doubledipity, because of its border designs, modified one of them, and the sum is gorgeous. The book has endless possibilities; I've had it spiral bound because I know I'll be using it a lot.

Fascinating, challenging, informative.......2004-05-22
If you are looking for quick fixes and simplistic solutions to conflict this book is not for you. The highly analytical approach illuminates the complexities of conflict management. Folger et al do an excellent job exploring the theoretical and psychological background necessary to evaluate the implicit and explicit causes and conditions involved in and effectively pursue solutions to disputes at mutiple levels. You wont find this book on the NY Times bestsellers list because it is a textbook. Graduate student and practiotioners can expect to draw upon it as an invaluable resource. Unlike most of those popular books this book doesn't just 'get you to yes', it actually has more weight and substance than most everything else out there. If you want a popular book on the topic of conflict that most non-professionals will find approachable read "Difficult Conversations." You will find it enjoyable and highly accessible.

In the early '50s, Clifford Brown was one of the most dominant trumpeters of the Hard Bop period. Nick Catalano, professor of literature and music at Pace University, has written the first book on this important artist, and it's a winner. "In addition to his artistic achievements, Brown exuded virtue and magnanimity," Catalano writes. "He wasn't just a 'nice guy'; he was much more than that." At a time when jazzmen where generally portrayed as drug addicted hustlers, Brown was the exception. He was college educated, rarely smoked or drank, and was a positive role model to other musicians. Had he not been killed in a tragic car accident at the tender age of 25, he may have altered the future of jazz. As it is, he has left a lasting impression on the art form.
Beginning with his nurturing childhood in Wilmington, Delaware, Catalano chronicles Brown's extraordinary rise as a Dizzy Gillespie-inspired upstart, to a seasoned professional who continued to practice and play R&B dates despite terrible pain from a near-fatal car accident. Catalano highlights Brown's work with heavyweights like Lionel Hampton, Quincy Jones, John Lewis, and Art Blakey, and his analyses of Brown's crisp trumpet style and compositions, including "Joy Spring" and "Dahooud," are detailed and entertaining. At the summit of his career, while co-leading a trailblazing combo that featured Max Roach and Sonny Rollins, Brown perished on the rain-soaked Pennsylvania Turnpike on the way to a gig in Chicago. Catalano shows that, even in death, his influence lives on in trumpeters like Freddie Hubbard and Wynton Marsalis, and in the Tony Award-winning Broadway play, Sideman. If there is such a thing as a jazz saint, Clifford Brown was it. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Book Description
Although he died in a tragic car accident at twenty-five, Clifford Brown is widely considered one of the most important figures in the history of jazz, a trumpet player who ranks with Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis, and a leading influence on contemporary jazz musicians. Now, in Clifford Brown: The Life and Art of the Legendary Jazz Trumpeter, Nick Catalano gives us the first major biography of this musical giant. Based on extensive interviews with Clifford Brown's family, friends, and fellow jazz musicians, here is a fascinating portrait of a remarkable musician. Catalano depicts Brown's early life, showing how he developed a facility and dazzling technique that few jazz players have ever equaled. We read of his meteoric rise in Philadelphia, where he played with many of the leading jazz players of the 1950s, including Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker; his tour of Europe with Lionel Hampton, which made him famous; and his formation of the Brown-Roach Quintet with prominent drummer Max Roach--one of the most popular hard bop combos of the day. Catalano also shows that Brown was a remarkable individual--he grew up in a middle-class African-American home in Wilmington, Delaware, attended college, was a skilled mathematician, and had wide cultural interests. Moreover, in an era when most jazz players were either alcoholics or addicts, Brown was clean-living and drug free. Indeed, he became a role model for musicians who were struggling with drugs and had great influence in this area with one prominent colleague, tenor sax player Sonny Rollins. Clifford Brown not only provides a colorful account of Brown's life, but also features an informed analysis of his major recorded solos, highlighting Brown's originality and revealing why he remains a great influence on trumpet players today. It is a book that anyone with a serious interest in jazz will want to own.
Customer Reviews:
The Best History of Clifford Available.......2006-11-29
To my knowledge, this is the only full biography of Clifford Brown ever written. It covers his entire life, from his birth, through his Blue Flame days, all the way to his historical work with Max Roach. The book also includes 8 or so pages of pictures in the middle, which is great for those of you whom haven't seen brownie, and a nearly complete discography in the back of the book. Simply put, Clifford Brown is one of the best jazz trumpeters of all time (my favorite, personally), and quite possibly the most tragic loss in jazz history. Any jazz musicians, Clifford fans, or general jazz aficionados should check this book out if they are looking to learn about one of the greats.
Clifford Brown-Maybe The Ultimate 'Tough Sell' Book'.......2006-01-05
Clifford Brown really was 'too good to be true'...didn't drink,do drugs...incredible jazz musician.Nick Catalano really
does an "impossible job" in telling the story of the great trumpeter who died tragically way before his time-and Catalano's anaysis of Brown's recordings makes the case that Brown is a man who "coulda been king"(even though he sorta was anyway).
.
Brownie.......2005-10-22
Clifford Brown had one of the most beautiful trumpet tones in all of modern jazz, and technique that other players would die for. He was not your "typical" (as portrayed to the masses) jazz musician - he didn't drink, smoke, or use drugs; he had a family and a good marriage; he worked hard at his craft. The tragedy is that he was killed in a car crash at the age of 25 at the height of his powers. Even by then though, he had recorded a number of albums establishing himself as one of the greats in the business.
Catalano's book competently traces Brownie's life, from the beginnings in Wilmington, Delaware, to his days with the Lionel Hampton band, early sideman dates in NYC, gigs in LA and Chicago, and finally the formation of the Brown-Max Roach Quintet with Harold Land and then Sonny Rollins on tenor. Catalano is a musician so is able to analyze Brownie's performances and recordings, which he does well, but the life history of the man is told somewhat blandly. We finish the book with a good skeletal outline of Brown's life and career, but much of the meat seems missing.
Sensitive portrait of the trumpet's most tragic talent.......2002-02-17
I read this modest little work last summer in a cottage in the lakeland region of central Finland. The silence around me allowed me to think about Brownie's playing -its purity and clarity- uncontaminated by other music or noise. Of course the first thing I wanted to do when I got back to my records was listen to Brownie over and over again. Catalano paints a sensitive portrait in an approachable, occasionally shoddy style. Clifford Brown's music doesn't quite come alive, perhaps, but Catalano expresses the lucidity of the trumpeter's musical vision and astonishing melodic gift with some agility. It's not a penetrating insight, but there is no other book around (as far as I know) that tells the poignant story of the great trumpeter's short life, so this is an essential purchase.
Dull Account of Life of Super Trumpeter........2000-09-13
Catalano's book about Clifford Brown fails to convey much more than lame summary. The reader receives a readable account of the trumpeter's short life, but the writing itself leaves much to be desired in that it's unpolished, redundant, chatty, and rarely profound. (And it's got typos to boot!) How about this telling detail of Brown's stint in an R&B band? "Clifford Brown and Vance Wilson were quite close and got the kind of education that only comes from being on the road. One time, recalled Wilson, 'We were in Wildwood [New Jersey]. Clifford had never eaten raw clams and neither had I. So we dared each other. We went over to this counter where they were serving them, but we didn't know how to eat them.' They proceeded to put sauce on the clams and started to chew them, failing to notice other eaters who were 'slurping' them. Their exaggerated chewing made everyone laugh" (Catalano 62). Catalano's choice of quotations, in my opinion, is very suspect throughout the entire book. It's as though he's a high-school-essay-writing-novice trying to round out a paper and show that's he read a thing or two or interviewed someone or another, as the case may be. Ok, the book does contain some analysis of Brown's music, and provided that not much else has been written of the trumpeter, I suppose the book merits a cursory glance. But be prepared for some dull, over-accessible, easy-reading.
