He was born before the Civil War, but Linda Simon's lively biography Genuine Reality depicts William James (1842-1910) as a decidedly contemporary thinker. A pioneering psychologist and unorthodox philosopher, he rejected rigid systems in favor of a flexible, relativist approach that stressed the fluid nature of identity and physical reality. His students at Harvard (Gertrude Stein, for one) found this immensely liberating, as did James himself. One of the book's many virtues is Simon's sensitive analysis of how his ideas rescued him from years of spiritual confusion and the smothering embrace of a neurotic family.
Book Description
This first full biography of William James in nearly a generation brings us the man alive in all his complexity. Intellectual rebel, romantic pragmatist, aristocratic pluralist, James was both a towering figure of the nineteenth century and a springboard into the twentieth century. Constitutionally opposed to the rigidity and stability of the nineteenth century, James guided his generation toward the ambivalence, unpredictability, and indeterminacy of the times that followed. His explorations of pluralism and pragmatism for modern psychology and recognized the possibility of multiple perspectives long before Cubism. "The word 'or'" he once wrote, "names a genuine reality." Profiting from a rich range of sources, among them 1,500 letters written between James and his wife, Alice, acclaimed biographer Linda Simon creates an intimate portrait of this multifaceted and contradictory man. Exploring James in the context of this irrepressible family, his diverse and often quirky friends, and the cultural and political forces to which he so energetically responded, Simon weaves the many threads of William James's life into a genuine, and vibrant, reality.
Customer Reviews:
Decent biography, not much philosophy.......2006-08-28
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. However, there are a few reasons why I didn't give it five stars:
1) The writing is decent, but not nearly so good that I actually enjoyed the writing itself as distinct from the content.
2) Simon seems very sure of herself when discussing the motivations of Henry James Sr., especially. I got the sense that Henry Sr., at least, could have been treated with a bit more nuance and charity. For comparison, I've only read Louis Menand's "The Metaphysical Club", so I can't speak with any authority, but it just seemed that Simon didn't like Henry Sr., whereas she did like William, so Henry Sr. didn't get the benefit of any doubt, whereas William did. (Henry Sr. figures largely in the beginning of the book)
3) I wish Simon had done a bit more to actually present James' philosophical views. I got a good picture of James as a person, but only a very vague one of him as a thinker. Genuine Reality is a biography, of course, and not a philosophical or psychological text, but given James' identity as a philosopher/psychologist, even a very large amount of philosophical explication would have been warranted.
Billy Boy.......2003-05-03
Very nicely done biography, Simon seems to be a meticulous, sympathetic critic of her subjects. While I enjoyed reading about this legendary figure in American philosophy and psychology, I ended up being less impressed by him than before. Such disenchantment is probably the hallmark of reading a good biography, as it necessarily brings the mighty down to fallible human dimensions. I had always wondered what it was about the James household that produced such a noteworthy novelist and such a thoughtful philosopher--it turns out that inept dysfunction is the source of this family genius. Their father, at least through Simons's interpretation, seems a very unlikable figure--a passive-aggressive tyrant who would constantly move his family from place to place rather than have them come to develop roots and mentors beyond his control. Sadly, this tactic generated in his family a doubt of self that could lead to such insights as those his two most prominent boys seemed to understand in all its nuances. While we may appreciate their hard-won insights, it doesn't seem any fun to have suffered through them as each of his children did for all their lives. The book provides a complex look at a figure who for all his knowledge remained an embattled, unsatisfied self-critic--like all the best thinkers, I suppose.
Do somebody a good turn and Not be found out..........2002-02-20
The truly great men in early American history, in my humble opinion, are as follows:
Thomas Jefferson
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain)
William James
Because of their intense individualism, idealistic views, and unique personalities, their writings, thoughts and ideas continue to affect western civilzation into the 21st century. Let me just say at the start - I'm not proposing a forum for argument, debating the worth and influence of one historical figure against another - these are men who have shaped my life in lasting ways - particularly the psychologist, philosopher and teacher, William James.
If you are interested in the works and life of this noble individual, ~Genuine Reality~ is a good place to begin. Linda Simon is an adept biographer and this book reflects her skill, understanding and love for the subject. It was refreshing to read a biography without the once fashionable 'psychoanalytical method' of interpreting history: inserting the Oedipus complex or hints of homoeroticism into the work. This method gets tedious and more reveals the biographer's mind than the subject. It is obvious that Simon wanted to approach James from a pragmatic perspective and she succeeded in showing James' life, warts and all, more specifically, however, his inspiring personality, compulsive curiosity and genuine love of life.
Similar to most people of genius, James' life was indeed a contradiction, at times almost enigmatic. He realized early on, that to rivet one's thought or perspective to a single dogma, to close one's mind to the infinite possibilities of existence, was to commit intellectual and spiritual suicide. Thus his thoughts are mercurial, bouncing from one possible view to another, always searching, investigating with an incessant vigour of a child. Following the works of Heraclitus, Henri Bergson, and aspects of Fredric Nietzche, James' 'Pluralism' is a philosophy of affirmation, transformation and becoming. Rallying against the Platonic and Aristotelian belief that fixity has more worth than change, he proposed that life or existence is not fixed at all but involved in an on-going state of flux: the operating word is change. And his life certainly reflects this perspective, as Simon writes:
"He was a scientist with a disposition of a philosopher and a philosopher with the perspective of an artist. He was convinced of his own essential complexity: certain that his public personality contradicted a hidden, more authentic self. He championed the new, he hungered for astonishment."
At the core of James' view of life is to maintain a continual openness to our existence: attempt to create a kind of vital joy to life's infinite possibilities. In other terms, do not sit back and merely observe, but get your hands dirty, engage, and life will give back to you many fold.
~Genuine Reality~ is an important contribution to American history. Linda Simon is a genuine biographer with transparent humility, more concerned with presenting her subject as it is, rather than trying to show off her knowledge, wit and writing skills. All too often, biographer's egos get in the way: they become so involved in revealing their intellectual capacity, the subject of the biography falls by the wayside. Not so with this text.
This book is an intimate portrayal of a great man's life: his interesting and unusual family, his work and relationships, and his sometimes-underrated contribution to philosophy. Out of all of James' writings, there is a line that showed me, in essence, the true character of the man:
"Just for today I will exercise my soul in three ways: I will do somebody a good turn and Not be found out. I will do two things I Don't want to do."
This biography is recommended without reservation.
Accurate, but not as lively as one would wish.......2001-12-22
He was born before the Civil War, but Linda Simon's accurate yet occasionally grinding biography `Genuine Reality` depicts William James (1842-1910) as a decidedly contemporary thinker. A pioneering psychologist and unorthodox philosopher, he rejected rigid systems in favor of a flexible, relativist approach that stressed the fluid nature of identity and physical reality. His students at Harvard found this a gas, as did James himself. (He was always showing off to somebody his whole life, apparently greatly concerned that he be popular with this peers, whoever they happened to be.) One of the book's many virtues is Simon's sensitive analysis of how his ideas rescued him from years of spiritual confusion and the smothering embrace of a neurotic family. One of the books vices is her unnecessary GRE-like drills of vocabulary. Interestingly enough, these start appearing in the middle of the book, as if her editor said "cool it, so your readers won't drop the book due to your unnecessary pretentiousness." Anyway, this is still a very well researched bio. of W.J., giving particular attention to his family life.
WONDERFUL!.......2001-12-11
I pride myself on being a William James buff and this biography by Linda Simon has proven to be the best, most accurate portrayal ever written. If you don't believe my review, take a look at the excellent review of the book by the New York Times. I hightly recommend this book to all those who have enjoyed Linda Simon's previous biographies, and to all those who agree William James is a man worth remembering.
Book Description
In this volume, the acknowledged pioneer in attention deficit disorder research combines the best of his previous books with important new information. In the new chapters (about 25 percent of the book), Hartmann looks at how and why America's school system fails to assist children diagnosed with ADHD and urges parents to find alternative means of educating their children when this happens.
Customer Reviews:
The name says it all!!!.......2005-10-17
Thom Hartmann has written a series of books related to ADD/ADHD.
They all are wonderful easy to understand and useful books.
They introduce a powerful perspective to those labeled ADD/ADHD. ADD/ADHD, being based on labeling behaviors is challenged in many ways by these books of Hartmaan's.
Thom Hartmann's books provide a useful tool to help people recognize the psychological coping mechanism that are associated with ADD patterns of behavior. This was very helpful to me since I am not ADD/ADHD and had no idea how to relate or what I was relating to!!!
The Complete Guide to ADHD is just that, as complete a work of information about ADD/ADHD that I have found to date.
It says handy around the house!
Bottom-line these books helped several people I know and love.
So this review is one of a personal point of "been there done that!" I learned much as did my family and friends.
These books of his help!!!
Yours in good health

Buy this Hartmann ADD book - it is his BEST.......2003-09-02
.
There are lots of reviews detailing the major points and I think they do a pretty fair job. So I won't repeat them.
The major point I would like to make is that Thom Hartmann has written several books - I think it's confusing trying to figure out which one(s) to read. His "A Different Perspective" was fantastic. But his "Complete Guid" is the best. If you are into NLP, his "Healing" book is useful. [My take on NLP is: Neuro Linguistic Programming - learn how people's eyes literally look in a particular direction when they are thinking certain types of thoughts {and succeed in poker) - control your involuntary physiological responses to transform your behavior - e.g., train your mind to be tranzuil (instead of fearful) when you see a black cat.]
Thom Hartmann's approach is effective [in my opinion and in direct contrast to the newest review I saw] because it helps me get get a handle on the various problems AND it offers effective advice on how to leverage ADD strengths.
I hope this proves useful.
An Interesting Perspecitve, But Little Help.......2003-06-30
I found Hartmann's Hunter/Farmer take on ADD an interesting way of recasting ADD as something other than a disorder, to help people with ADD create a positive stories for and about themselves and their ADD. If it helps even a few people improve their self-esteem, then it's worth considering.
However, as an adult with ADD who was diagnosed just a year and a half ago, I hoped to to find some helpful hints to improve my performance at work and in my every day life. Hartmann is a bit long on new paradigms but a bit short on "This is what you should do" type advice. Still, I'm glad I took the time to read the book and get to know his ideas and perspective on ADD.
He understands ADD..........2002-03-31
Thom Hartmann is somebody who seems to really understand what ADD is all about. This is a great book that brings up some very interesting points. The section about education and learning is outstanding.
I think all people who have ADD themselves or care about a person with ADD should read this book. This is a great book somebody who us just begining to learn about ADD. It's also a great book for somebody who is looking for a different view of ADD than doctors and other my be giving.
I think anybody who has an interest in ADD should read at least one of Thom Hartmann's books.
Good Book For Beginning to Understand.......2001-07-11
I have struggled with ADD my whole life, was diagnosed 7 years ago, and only today am I beginning to really begin to gain a grip on my disability. This book has been a real help to me as I begin to do this. It has provided a series of interesting and import ways to look at ADD rather than bashing my head against a wall as if I understood. Rather, I needed a combination of clinical and personal perspectives that this book is great for. I would only say that I wish that there could have been a greater discussion of how, I as an adult can begin to structure my life in a better way as to minimize the effects of ADD. Instead, I think too often in the book the author resorts to more broad summations and issues rather than getting on his hands and knees in the dirt with me. I think that criticism should not overshadow though the great insights this book holds for all of us who are beginning to make that change with our lives or those parents figuring out how to deal with their children's diagnosis.

Barnard opens this modest paperback with a chart that provides information you will want to keep by the outdoor grill. This comprehensive, nine-page table lists every food you might grill, from burgers and ribs to shrimp, corn, and tofu. It gives the cooking times, proper grill temperatures, and how to know when the food is done. (Shrimp are done when they are opaque throughout; peppers are done when their skin is blackened and the flesh is tender.) Barnard's definitions of marinade, mop, sauce, rub, and paste are helpful when you want to improvise, but why bother when you can whip up any of the 117 recipes Barnard provides. Vibrant with ethnic flavors or traditional American combinations, they offer an appealing blend of intense tastes, efficiency, and variety. In particular, look for Alehouse Steak Marinade, Herbal Balsamic Glaze, and Roasted Garlic Paste.
Book Description
What's the secret to perfect barbecues? Marinate, marinate, marinate. Unmarinated food is never as tender, juicy and mouthwateringly delicious as food that has been soaked in a subtle sauce before being seared over open coals.
In Marinades, grill master Melanie Barnard provides 75 recipes to enhance the flavor of meat, poultry, seafood, vegetables and even fruits. Internationally inspired, these recipes include such delectable marinades as Adobo, Jamaican Jerk, Sake Teriyaki and Polynesian Passi on Fruit and Rum to tickle palates up and down the taste spectrum. In addition to the recipes, Barnard also offers practical grilling advice and tips on pairing foods with marinades.
Grilling is one of the best ways to add flavor to food without adding fat. As evidenced by the explosive demand for fancy grills, fuels and flammable additives such as mesquite and hickory, today's backyard barbecuing has outgrown shriveled hotdogs and charred chicken. For the legions of Americans hungry for the perfect barbecue, Marinades is the final, most important ingredient.
Customer Reviews:
A very good book........2005-05-30
I have used this book *heavily*, and have tried most of the marinades, a couple of the rubs, and one sauce. For my taste, it contains more good or excellent recipes than unremarkable ones; and I've found none of the ones I've tried to be bad. I especially love the zingy, spicy Carolina Mountain Marinade for a pork tenderloin.
What the book needs, though, is a separate index listing recipes grouped by the meat for which they are intended.
Otherwise, my only complaint is that it could be a little longer!
This book has some bad recipes.......2002-09-07
I am a very good griller and pride myself on my marinades and the fact I love to try new things. I bought this book a couple years ago and have given up. Of the 12 different recipes I've tried only 2 have been very good. More often than not, just mediocre.
I even had 3 recipes get the thumbs down, by far the worst buffalo wings recipe I've ever made- and I tried it twice.
I would not recommend this to any of my grilling friends.
The *one* cookbook you need for summer.......2000-07-02
This is virtually the only cookbook I refer to during the summer. Every recipe that I've tried is great for grilling or broiling.
Remarkable and delicious.......1999-09-06
Ms. Barnard has come up with a whole slew of unusual and tasty combinations that range from very subtle to very assertive but they are almost uniformly delicious. I tend to use the hot and spicy recipes but there are also any number of sweet and fruity ones as well as flavors in the middle. Despite its very limited focus, it's the best new cookbook I've used in years.
Keep this handy for some great meals.......1998-07-24
I found the layout to be pretty common sense with well defined chapters. The recipies use common ingredients and are easy to follow. We were primarily intrested in rib rubs when we purchased the book and have since given copies to friends interested in new BBQ ideas.

A great book for those kids who want a little more than most.......2000-04-05
I bought this book for my four year old daughter, and neither of us were disappointed. In addition to some really top notch illustrations, the book presents information about sharks and their prehistoric ancestors in an easy to follow, logical progression. Difficult words and names are highlighted, and provide a chance for parents to help their children with their reading and phonics skills. All of the information provided in the book is superb; it is up to date, and coincides with the latest scientific data available about these amazingly diverse creatures, covering from the first primative sharks to the more bizarre species such as Hybodus and of course, the mighty Megalodon.I highly recommend this book for the budding young scientist, and for parents that want to expose their children to more than Pokemon, Barney, or other typical children's fare.

Customer Reviews:
Easy and very dramatic.......2006-07-22
Plenty of window ideas to use in this excellent book. From tab-tops hanging on individual hooks rather than rods to Roman shades, there is something for everyone.
One of the nicest looks was a rooster motif fabric in black made up into Roman shades for a traditional kitchen. The kitchen, if you looked at the pictures, was really quite plain, but the black fabric and large orange rooster design added all the excitement you'd need.
The book is done in sections by room, but you could use the bedroom or even bath ideas for other rooms. My favorite ideas were the dual fabric pooled drapes; two colors silk were banded and pooled on a long window. The bands break up the long fabric line and match the wainscoting running across the room. Very formal yet simple for a dining room. There were some funky ideas; metal work from the antique or salvage shop used as a curtain rod, a birch log as a curtain topper. Vines used to decorate sheers in a baby's nursery. Interesting; not what I'd want to live with, but visually fascinating and perhaps inspiring.
Title Says it All.......2005-12-07
This is a basic window treatment book that shows you how to create easy and no sew treatments. I have always liked the Better Homes and Gardens book for the beautiful photography and the clear instructions. This book is no different.
The chapters separate treatments by rooms and then tells you what page to find the directions. This makes it much easier to look through the book to find what you like. When you turn to the instructions, it includes a small picture of the treatment, skill level required, supplies and time it might take.
This is a great book for those with limited time and/or sewing skills.
Great for Beginners.......2005-04-14
This book is great for beginners. It contains simple, fashionable window treatments with "easy to follow" instructions and photos. I would highly recommend it to those with limited sewing skills or time.
An amazing, impressive, inspiring guide.......2002-04-09
Ably edited by Linda Hallam, Window Basics: Easy & No-Sew Treatments is an amazing, impressive, inspiring guide filled with full-color photographs on how simple and easy window treatments ranging from drapery panels, shades, curtains, and valances, to a wide range of other options any of which, alone or in combination, can truly enhance the beauty and ambience of one's own home. Filled cover to cover with gorgeous ideas, step-by-step instructions, and clearly displayed examples of different ways to dress up one's windows, Window Basics: Easy & No-Sew Treatments is the perfect book for anyone looking to spruce up their home on a reasonably modest budget of money and time.

ShapeWalking goes beyond most fitness walking programs by adding toning and stretching to an aerobic walking regimen. Exercisers use their own body weight and portable exercise bands for strength training to help control weight, develop muscle, and prevent or reverse bone density loss. Addressing people of all fitness levels, the authors discuss getting started, setting attainable goals, achieving a target heart rate, and toning the most common trouble spots. Workouts include an antiosteoporosis workout that strengthens the bones most affected by the disease. Completely updated, this book also includes current resources, photos demonstrating proper form, charts for keeping track of progress, and safety tips for preventing injuries.
Customer Reviews:
Good if you want to be slimmer and trimmer.......2005-06-04
A good book for anyone who wants to get moving and look and feel better. The book could use a chapter on the need for changing our present laws which contribute to Americans' obesity and sedentary lifestyle. Ideally, such a chapter would discuss poor zoning regulations (leading to a lack of walkable neighborhoods), agricultural subsidies (leading to unnaturally cheap sugar, corn syrup, and the like) and laws favoring car use over walking and transit. Maybe in the next edition.
Aerobic Exercise with Target Toning.......2004-10-31
Marilyn L. Bach, Ph. D. is a fitness consultant and Lorie Schleck, M.A., P.T., is a fitness consultant. Together, they have developed a total fitness program to encourage a healthier life. There are six main chapters/steps:
1. Making the Decision - Deciding to "fitness walk."
2. Getting Started with Fitness Walking - Target Zone information and Creating a Custom Program.
3. Fitness Walking Plus - Incorporating toning into your walking
4. Strength Training - A 15 and 30-minute strength training program.
5. Target Toning - Toning exercises that will enhance your walking.
6. A Week in the Life of a ShapeWalker - Liz, Tom and Jodi share their secrets and you can see charts of walking activities. Throughout this book, you will find pictures of toning exercises and walking techniques.
At the end of the book, you can find a Fitness Walking Record. I also found I could keep track of my walking in a fitness journal. This section of the book is essential to keep you focused and motivated. Before keeping a fitness journal I could not see where I was going or where I had been. When you keep track of your progress, it is highly motivational. At that point, you keep increasing your knowledge and you find out what works.
If you are continuously working on your New Year's resolutions, this book can give you new goals for the coming year. I tend to want to start new projects in the summer, although walking is a year-round activity you can enjoy in any season. I started becoming more serious about my walking over 51 weeks ago and it was the breakthrough I needed. When you only stretch and do Pilates and Yoga, you can see good results in muscle tone, but it is the walking or other aerobic exercises that take you to a new level in your fitness. I found that just doing one or the other is definitely not as effective as doing aerobics and toning. That made my walking easier and made my toning sessions much more enjoyable because I had more endurance and a new level of confidence.
Not only does walking oxygenate the body, it helps you to feel less stiff, can reduce bodily pain and will definitely help you lose inches. Since I started my walking program I've lost about 11 ½ inches. I did notice that when you gain muscle, your weight takes a while to regulate and then drop week by week. This was also mentioned on some of the makeover shows on TV, but is rarely mentioned in health books.
Whether you are just starting a walking program or have decided to incorporate target toning, this book has a lot to offer. This is the new edition and not only does this book help you develop a walking program, the authors give special attention to the abs, butt, thighs and arms.
What will you need? Walking shoes, an exercise band and free weights.
Some of the helpful items in this book include:
Advice for various weather conditions.
Advice about heart-rate monitoring.
How to get rid of cellulite - no creams needed.
Ideas about keeping a Food Journal
Developing a Plan for a Lifetime of Fitness
Working out in your Target Zone
ShapeWalking may encourage you to take a 10-minute walk before lunch or you may find yourself looking forward to walking on your treadmill while watching a new movie. When I started my walking program, I didn't push myself too much and this seems to be why I was able to keep up with the program. If you burn out at the start by overdoing it, the result will be a rejection of healing. Healing should be a fun process and when you keep track of your inches lost, you will love walking. You might also enjoy wearing a pedometer at first to see how many steps you are talking. When I saw how little I was walking at first; that made me very aware of how much I needed to move.
Winter Tips: Layer your clothes, look for waterproof walking shoes, plan your route before you leave the house. Use Walk Away the Pounds workouts if it is icy outside.
The most important thing is to just keep moving. When you realize how good it feels when you do exercise, you can never go back to not exercising. A few hidden benefits of walking include:
Aleviates Depression

Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease
Helps to Clear the Mind and gives you a sense of well-being
Boosts Your Self-Esteem
Prevents the loss of bone density

Book Description
Thirty years on from his first hit single, 'Space Oddity', David Bowie remains the most influential rock star from the post-Woodstock generation. Strange Fascination chronicles Bowie's career against the colourful backdrop of post-Beatles pop culture. It's a story of amazing creativity, of huge theatricality and of an almost pathological quest to remain relevant and at pop's cutting edge. It is simply the the most complete account of David Bowie and his impact on pop culture ever written. This book is the first genuinely insightful and heavyweight biography of a true musical icon, fully revised and updated for paperback edition.

A moving, though sometimes painful, love letter to Bowie........2006-07-05
This biography, by a self-admitted Bowie fan, is definitely one of the best biographies I've ever read, period. His writing style is often quite enthralling, and his descriptions of early Bowie performances jumped off the page. They went even farther in making me yearn for a time machine or rip in the time-space continuum, just so I could jump back a few decades to see the man live. In addition to his electric descriptions of past showmanship, Buckley also spends much time delving into speculation about his actions over past decades, including what is interpreted as sincere artistic creativity in the '70s, discomfort and commercial kowtowing in the '80s, and a sure climb to becoming an absolutely painful corporate entity in the present.
I must admit that Buckley's portrayal of each decade is convincing. Surely the experimentation of the Eno records could mean nothing but a sincere need for innovation, but the Bowie of the '90's (and I fear the first half of the '00s) has become that corporate giant he has always seemed to run exactly counter to, and it saddens me.
However, I still think that Bowie's legacy means so much more than he has become in recent years, and I am glad that Buckley ends the book with a section on how he has shaped the fans' lives with his music and image. Indeed, this message of his early music: that everyone can be, and is, a star, even as they stand disenfranchised, lonely and unsure of what they are, is what remains important to me and so many of his fans. This is what he should be remembered for, and what will always set him apart from other musicians for me; he will always be the one that tells his fans that it is okay to be different, and indeed beautiful to be so.
This is what I thank David Buckley for communicating so well in his book; that despite the changes the man has undergone, he will, through his past achievements, always hold a spark for those of us who never felt we could be normal, and never wanted to be.
Well-written and informative, but slightly shallow.......2004-06-07
David Buckley certainly knows his subject having even written a PhD thesis on Bowie. In spite of that, this book is (in my twisted view at least) sadly not a very academic or high-brow approach to Bowie's art. Instead it is a rather straightforward biography with more emphasis on Bowie as an artist than as a person. I would have liked to see a more in-depth academical analysis of him, but I guess that wouldn't appeal to so many of his fans. Anyway, it is probably the best book on Bowie around so I recommend it. The only thing that really bothers me is the very strange collection of pictures Buckley has picked for the book. He seems to like those where Bowie has (to me at least) this really nasty, unpleasant grin. (Check out the Thin White Duke picture and the one with Bolan for example.) That is a shame I think, when he quite frankly is the most photogenic person alive.
Excellence.......2003-11-18
As a huge Bowie fan, and someone who sought factual information on the enigmatic rock legend i really enjoyed this book. There is more to recommend it than the cover (best picture of Bowie ive ever seen), Buckley meets just about anyone who was ever connected with Bowie, drawing upon bandmates like Carlos Alomar and Earl Slick, as well as contributions from producers such as Tony Visconti and Nile Rodgers as well as sound masters such as Eno, to give us a fuller picture of Bowie throughout the last four decades. What i like in particular about this book is the descriptions of Bowie's 'bad times', the 74-76 period in particular is very full and well outlined. If you love Bowie, you'll love reading this. The book also tries to uncover the meaning and history behind individual classic songs such as Heroes, Station To Station and Life On Mars?, which many of the other Bowie books dont do. As a biography of course we must not automatically accept everything in the book as fact, i mean for example, Bowie didnt contribute or endorse the book - but he never supports or endorses biographies of himself anyway, so just a teeny weeny pinch of salt sometimes thoughout might be wise.
Balanced book about a complicated artist.......2003-07-20
By his nature, David Bowie isn't an easy person to write a book about. He is very complicated, closed, and truly a "chameleon", which is the label many put on him. Buckley does an admirable job. He is obviously a devout fan, but he writes this book with a very balanced view. It is neither complete idolatry, nor is it a "kiss and tell" book. Instead, it is mostly about Bowie's art (music is obviously most of that, but his other forays as well) and how he works. There are tidbits of gossip here and there, as well as an aspect of setting the record straight. His early life isn't covered very much at all, and I would have liked to have heard more about his relationship with his brother Terry. The book goes as recent as 2000. Overall a great read, but I am left with one question....am I really the only one out there who loved the "Glass Spider" album??? I thought it was great!!!
Solid, well-balanced book.......2002-06-04
Buckley has slillfully juggled a proper critical distance with the evident enthusiasm of the long-time David Bowie fan. Quick to praise the highlights of his subject's career, he is equally adept at pricking the bubble of pomposity that has often surrounded Bowie, exposing his coke-addled rantings and deriding the leaden Tin Machine.

Fascinating only because that's the nature of the subject.......2006-08-01
You seemingly can't miss keeping people spellbound with the topic of Mr. Bowie. But his book is littered with non-sequiters and Mr. Buckley's tiresome, and sometimes trite, personal theories on pop-culture and music. He states sanctimoneously at the start of the book that he will not write about David Bowie's personal life, then proceeds to give us plenty of that. His book is also very Brit-centric in how it sees pop culture (making his theories in that area all the more tiresome) and has some silly notions about America- like apparently the reason Let's Dance did so well was because it came out in the era of Reagonimics. Well, Chic did not need Reagan to sell lots of records in the late 70s. Buckley dismisses the Art-school dropout story on Bowie as myth, then completely bypasses the fact Bowie worked as a commcercial artist whilst breaking into the music business.
It's OK, if your a Bowie fan. Buy a used copy of this if you must have it and then check out Tremlett's books on the fascinating Chameleon of Rock.
