Book Description
During the first half of the twentieth century Grace Abbott (1878-1939) and her sister Edith (1876-1957) worked tirelessly to correct many of our nation's most serious problems. In this vividly detailed and balanced biography, Lela B. Costin has given these two remarkable women their due.
From the Progressive Era through the New Deal, the Abbott sisters were an integral part of the debate that raged around the issues of suffrage, workers' rights, child labor laws, juvenile delinquency, prostitution, the "immigrant problem," tenement housing, social security, emergency relief programs, and the peace movement. Refusing to claim any of the special "feminine" insights often attributed to their contemporary Jane Addams, the Abbotts assumed the role of social engineers and strove for a specialized competence with which to understand the entire social system.
Individually their achievements were many. Grace was best known for her work with the U.S. Children's Bureau and Edith for her role in the founding and development of the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. As Costin shows, their lives and careers were inextricably woven into a dramatic partnership of ideas and action that challenged the prevailing norms of American society.

Nutrition and exercise are only two pieces of the puzzle of how to get fit and lose weight, writes Michael Gerrish. The other "UFOs" ("unidentified fitness obstacles") are barriers to getting fit. These might involve sleep, work addiction, food allergies, or a number of medical or emotional conditions or lifestyle issues.
Gerrish, an exercise physiologist, personal trainer, and psychotherapist, gives a self-test to see which of the 58 UFOs are yours and describes how you can conquer each one. He includes exercise information, with descriptions and illustrations of recommended strength training and stretching exercises, and a general diet plan. He also describes energy block acutherapy, a self-help breathing and tapping sequence to treat fears, addictions, cravings, self-sabotage, and post-traumatic stress.
More than one-third of the book is devoted to "The Makeovers"--stories of real people who "stumbled, fell down, and got up many times, transforming themselves as a result." We get to know these people through their journal entries, photos, and communications with Gerrish as they progress through their 12-week program.
Gerrish is married to personal coach Cheryl Richardson, author of Take Time for Your Life and Life Makeovers. The Mind-Body Makeover Project is recommended for people who struggle with weight loss and are ready to look at the bigger picture. --Joan Price

Inspirational and "How To" Live Healthfully Manual for Life.......2003-10-25
As a daily athlete for over thirty years who took to the roads to run long before women's running shoes, I have seen and read it all regarding books and theories on how to get fit. Michael's book is the real thing. That's because Michael is the real thing--a well-educated, thoughtful expert who lives what he preaches. He walksthetalk and that comes across in this book which should be mandatory reading and a life manual for people of ALL ages and ALL abilities. It is well-researched, well-written, and a reading experience that can provide each of us with the skills and knowledge to change our own lives.
Few books speak to such a wide audience from exercise hopefuls to exercise hounds. This book is for beginners, resistant exercisers and long-term fitness fans. Combining well-researched wisdom with inspiration, Michael's assessment tool enables any person to identify the physical and emotional health issues (UFOs) that can get in the way of getting to the gym or taking to the road. So it will help you learn how to start up with health-promoting exercise.
Recognizing that a person's response to exercise, the ability to reach your top potential, is not one-size-fits-all and changes with time, Michael's assessment tool is also an amazing way for people like myself, who have pursued health-promoting movement and playing with weights for decades, to identify factors and health changes that may be impairing top enjoyment and performance.
More than identifying obstacles, Michael Gerrish provides actionable solutions. As a psychologist working with people competing on life's fields of sport and work and people dealing with genuinely extreme challenges like life-threatening illness and disability, I know that an assessment is only as powerful as the recommendations that it generates. The Mind-Body Makeover provides customized recommendations that you can implement daily to improve the quality of your workouts and, more importantly, the quality and enjoyment of your life.
Buy this book. Keep it by your bedside. Use it today and through your lifespan to identify and solve your current obstacles to being the best you can be. Each time you read it, you up the chances of optimizing our health through your life's stages. And you increase the chances that you will learn to love playing in the gym and eating in the way that is healthful for you. With this book, you can learn to inspire your self to promote your physical and emotional health throughout your lifespan so that you can fully experience life's wonders and deal effectively with its curve balls.
Inspirational.......2003-10-10
I found this book to be very inspirational. I've tried to lower my bodyfat in the past but after a few weeks I would feel deprived and frustrated. The Mind Body Makeover Project gave me several ways to identify how I was ruining my own success. I've been on track and getting leaner every week for the past 14 weeks! When I need extra inspiration I simply read one of the stories of the people who have followed Mr. Gerrish's advice.
A refreshing approach to weight loss that really works.......2003-08-11
As someone who has spent most of her life bouncing from one weight loss plan to the next with little success, I was delighted to find that this refreshingly holistic program finally had the answers I needed. The author's amazingly accurate self-diagnostic test helped me to identify the real physiological, nutritional and emotional issues that were preventing me from losing weight. Once I understood the role that attention deficit disorder, hormone imbalances, weak boundaries and self-defeating beliefs were playing in my life, I was able to address these problems and select the diet and exercise program best suited for my unique needs. Following the progress of the book's seven makeover candidates gave me the encouragement I needed to stay on track. Best of all, I got honest-to-goodness results!
Mind Body Makeover Project.......2003-07-28
Wish I had this book 10 years ago when I went from doctor to doctor and they couldn't figure out what my symptoms meant. (The doctor who finally diagnosed me used a longer version of a test similar to the one in the book since medical tests didn't show anything)!
After reading the book my husband got tested for sleep apnia. Tests revealed he had it and it was treatable. He'd been to several doctors and though he mentioned problems none suggested being tested. Another example of the need for us to be aware of what's going on in our own bodies.
Thanks Michael for a very valuable and needed tool!
Highly recommended.......2003-07-28
I just finished Michael Gerrish's book and I was so impressed by the presentation that I felt compelled to contribute a review on his behalf.
In essence, this self-help fitness book is intended to assist people who are "stuck in a rut" in their efforts to become physically fit. As a method for doing so, Michael provides the means for identifying the "Unidentified Fitness Obstacles" that are preventing you from accomplishing your goals. First of all, let me say that this is a very practical and effective approach because, in analytical problem-solving of any type, people often overlook the most fundamental starting-point in finding a practical solution... and that is, before you can begin to fix a problem, you first have to determine exactly what the problem is. The exercise of pinpointing your personal impediments is a revelation in and of itself, and that alone is beneficial, but Michael then uses his considerable expertise and experience to propose solutions which are tailored to overcome the individual's unique hang-ups.
I appreciate Michael's "no pain, no gain" honesty in his advice. He doesn't delude readers into believing that there are any "quick-fixes" to these dilemmas. Michael makes it clear that any improvements to one's general health and fitness can result only from a comparable change in lifestyle, diet and exercise regiment and he provides specific recommendations and resources to effectuate that transformation. His proposals are detailed, yet easy to comprehend, and the "makeovers" help to personalize the process while providing the inspiration to get you motivated.
Whether you are a person who wants to get into shape but keeps putting it off, or you're someone who works out regularly but has hit a wall, this is an extremely helpful book and I highly recommend it.
Book Description
It's called the noble spirit and king of brandies--and who better to explain why than the celebrated bartender and world expert on cognac? This royal drink is his obsession, and before you're through with these elegantly illustrated, information-filled pages, it will be yours, too. Calabrese introduces the leading families and houses in the business and, decade by decade, gives the fascinating, sinful, and seductive history of cognac. Here, too, are the personal stories of those in the small area in France who produce the golden liquid, a summary of the distillation process from grape to cask to bottle, tasting notes for a selection of the finest vintages, tips of the trade, and handsome photography. An insightful reflection on a very special liquor.
Salvatore Calabrese is Bar Manager at the prestigious Lanesborough Hotel in London. Well known throughout the world as an author, cognac expert, and creator of many unique drinks, he is one of only a few experts on vintage cognac. Among the many honors he has received are The Campari Bartender of the Year award; the Chevalerie du Verre Galant, the Chevalier l'Ordre des Côteaux de Champagne, and winner of the Lea & Perrins International Healthy Cocktails Competition. His books include the bestseller Classic Cocktails, which has sold more than 150,000 copies.

Another winner..........2006-03-19
I'm amazed at how wonderfully this, and similar books are crafted. The color reproduction, detail, and information, is superb. Kudos to the staff who produced this wonderful book.
Amazon.com
Open this idea-packed volume completely at random and you'll come up with a great project every time. Besides great holiday-related crafts--lots of marvelous Christmas decorations, some fun Halloween items, lovely Valentine's Day keepsakes, Easter goodies--there are loads of wonderful objects for year-round use (frames, vases, lampshades, napkin rings, candleholders, table settings, and so much more). Everything is very easy to make, from simple step-by-step projects that require a modicum of time and materials to quickly made pieces that need only a very few supplies and even less time, to instant crafts that you can throw together out of almost nothing in almost no time. (Try this glittering centerpiece, for instance: fill lots of mismatched glasses and goblets with water, add sprinkles of confetti, and float a candle in each.) Even if you've never crafted before, you can handle nearly any project in the book, but each one is so appealing that experienced crafters with fairly sophisticated tastes will also find much to enjoy here. --Amy Handy

Good Book for Anyone!.......2007-05-24
This is a great way to get ideas for crafts and decorations. Many of the ideas are pretty simple to make. They are also very inexpensive to make.
Don't Judge This Kitchy Book by its Tasteful Cover.......2005-12-09
From the cover, it looks like this book might contain 365 tasteful projects. Not so. They are so kitchy! Don't by this book. You won't like these projects unless you have "home sweet home" wallpaper in your house to go with them.
Beautiful, but still hard for a novice.......2004-12-31
I love this book--it has wonderful tips and ideas. Many beautiful gifts and decorations can be made from such simple things! But, as a crafts novice, I have struggled to find some of the materials. Although I live in a major metropolitan area, and have been to 4 craft and fabric stores, some critical elements are just not available. Unfortunately, I'm not knowledgeable enough yet to know what to substitute. I'm not ready to give up, but this is taking a lot more time than I expected!
Lots to do and easy too!.......2002-01-24
This book shows various projects to make and has simple instructions to follow. Very informative.
Amazingly helpful!.......2002-01-21
This book has been extremely helpful to me in the past year. I love making gifts for my friends and family and when my creativity runs dry I open up the book and always find something perfect. The crafts inside aren't hard and have great instructions. It also has a huge variety of crafts so I can make gifts for people with completely different personalities. I've even liked some of the things so much that I made them for myself. I definitely recommend it to all the crafty, and even not-so-crafty people!!!!!

Terrifyingly Insightful.......2000-06-27
I found this book to be avarage as I started to read it. Many of what the author said I had heard before. But, when I got to the middle when he describes adult symptoms of a child abuse survivor it began to really get to me. Some of the things he described hit so close to home that my arms would get weak, my hands would tremble and if I'd been standing I probably would've colapsed. I recomend this to anyone who's gone through sexual abuse and/or those who love them. The author is extremely insightful and to the point. He has a way of bringing out the fears that dance around your head and showing you how to dispell, understand and deal with them. He never makes you feel that anything you've felt or thought as a survivor is wrong or monstrous. The only draw back I can see is that he refers to Christians a couple of times. I'm a Christian myself but I could see how this could turn off a person who is a survivor but not a Christian. That's the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5. I highly recommend this book.
Haunted Memories.......2000-06-01
Haunted Memories deals with the problem and results of childhood abuse, of which the author has firsthand experience. His training and work in Christian counseling enable him to present the subject with both psychological and spiritual insight, and offer guidance and hope to those in need. His careful description of the immediate and adulthood symptoms might lead one to conclude that everyone has at least some of these. However the author points out the differences between such general indications and the true warning signs of abuse.

Good material.......2005-05-11
If you have been in the website, you know this is good stuff. Incomplete, unfortunately and also it doesnt do a good job in discussing the differences between different pressings, mono/stereo, etc. Most of the time you have to 'assume' they are talking about the current CD's, which is not entirely the right thing to do or the best version of the albums.
Maybe Not Perfect But Close .......2005-04-08
The book is jam packed with all kinds of info.
In response to the other review: I think the main problem is the website beatles-discography.com got so huge so quick that constant updating resulted in some stuff not being included in the book.
But the ommissions that I've found are really obscure ones. Probably stuff that most authors would skip over because the songs are like non-existant. Like maybe a bootlegged unreleased song from a session or something almost irrelevant to a discography.
So perhaps a revised edition could only satisfy the most hardcore Beatle fanatics that want to know things like how many nose hairs John Lennon had in his left nostril on March 12th 1964, but for any sane individual this book does the job nicely and it's a bit more entertaining then a list type discography because you get to read all about the songs and stuff. AND it fits nicely in a backpack which means you can take it camping with you! :)
Enjoyable (as far as it goes!).......2005-03-14
Had I discovered this book on the racks of a bookstore, I would have placed it near the top of the Beatles reference books in my library. Unfortunately, I found it through the website by the same name as the book's title. A fantastic, richly informed website! And therein, lies my problem with the book. It pales in comparison with the wealth of info in the website. Since the site says "If you like this website, buy the book!", I naturally assumed I'd be getting the same material, making the book on a par with the excellent Lewisohn and Spizer reference texts.
First, the positive: It's an informative, enjoyable read with a light, almost irreverent, conversational style. It is filled with quotes from a variety of sources that gives a fresh flavor to otherwise well-known Beatles facts.
The negatives fall into four main categories: [1] There are a distressingly high number of typographical errors. It's almost as if the book was written before spell-check was invented! Example: The Beatles' meditation trip to Bangor, Wales -- "Bangor" is misspelled "Bagnor" more often than it's spelled correctly. [2] There are no photos! The book is text from cover to cover, unlike the website which has a stunning collection of photos. [3] There is no index, so if you want to read about Astrid Kirchherr and her relationship with the Beatles, for example, you better know where and what year they met. [4] The info in the "Day-by-Day" and "Song-by-Song" sections is incomplete, sometimes severely so. For example, there are discussions of 372 songs on the website, but only 241 in the book! I bought the book primarily for this info, so I was sorely disappointed in the omissions.
To be fair, the website does not state that the book is an exact repro of the site, but the implication is there. If it had included the 131 omitted songs, I would have given this book 5 stars, even with the other problems noted. Despite all this, it's still a very enjoyable reference. But BE FOREWARNED: it is a selective representation of the website. Very good -- as far as it goes.
