Book Description
Born in London of an English father and Australian mother and educated in Switzerland, Billy Drake was to become one of the most illustrious RAF fighter pilots of World War II, indeed of all time.
He flew in many theatres with various squadrons on different aircraft - starting with 1 Squadron in France in 1940 on Hurricanes, then with 421 Flight (later 91 Squadron) on Spitfires over the Channel, then in West Africa with 128 and the Desert with 112 'Shark' Squadron (of which he was a very successful commander) on Kittyhawks. Taken off ops at the end of 1942, he was posted to Malta leading the Krendi Wing. On return to the Uk he led a 2nd TAF Typhoon Wing, flying numerous sorties over the French coast prior to the Invasion. He eventually accounted for more than 20 enemy aircraft destroyed or damaged.
He was then despatched to Fort Leavenworth USA with Peter Brothers, then to Operations Staff SHAEF HQ for the rest of the war. Postwar he was to be found in Japan, at HQ Malaya and Singapore, followed by a succession of staff appointments, including Air Attache' in Switzerland. His final posting was a Group Captain commanding RAF Chivenor, Devon, until retirement in July 1963. His adventures continued, however, during over 20 years in Portugal, and he is now living and working (at the age of 84!) in London.
An extremely colourful personality, he gives Christopher Shores and the reader tremendous insights into his exceptional career, his widely differing experiences, the characters he knew and flew with and the often amusing highlights of an RAF lifestyle. Includes never before published photographs and a cover painting by Nicolas Trudgian.

Stuck in Fast Forward.......2004-02-17
I am a WWII aviation junkie, and the books I enjoy most are the ones that give the reader a feeling of actually "being there" in the day-to-day operations of a combat unit. This, unfortunately, is NOT one of those books. I'm sure Grp Captain Billy Drake had a fascinating career in the RAF, but one would never know it from this bare-bones collection (104 pages) of reminiscences. No details are given of his 24+ aerial victories beyond the aircraft type. Whereas he spends paragraphs talking about what unit was affiliated with which group, etc. I have to say that I was very disappointed by everything except the dust jacket illustration by Nicolas Trudgian. My advice would be: re-read "Thunderbolt," "An Ace of the Eighth," or "The Big Show" instead.

A first-rate introduction to Freud.......2007-06-10
Freud is now somewhat unfashionable, and stands on the periphery of current psychological thought and practice. Yet the very people who denigrate his work do so using terms and concepts that owe a great deal to that work. To be a 'Freudian' today makes as much sense as being a 'Newtonian', but that should not blind us to the importance of his contribution. Storr adopts just the right approach -- he begins each topic with a summary of what Freud said, then offers criticisms of it. He talks more than once of the need to 'separate the wheat from the chaff'. Freud was once revered as a kind of Messiah. Now he is reviled. As usual, the truth lies somewhere in between. Given the brevity of this book, it is remarkably comprehensive, and is an ideal introduction to the man and his work. I read Schopenhauer: A Very Short Introduction before reading this book and I would recommend doing that. There is an obvious indebtedness, although Freud specifically denied it.
The unconscious purveyor of 20th century terminology.......2006-07-09
We are all aware of many of Freud's ideas, even if we're not conscious aware of that derivation. The concept of the id, the ego, the super-ego, Oedipal complex, etc., are now so much a part of our everyday language that we could find it easy to forget that they have not always been so.
This little book is truly a perfect introduction to Freud's life and work for those who'd never read any Freud and who want to get a good starting point. The writing is exceptionally clear and remarkably unbiased - readers will gain a good understanding of why Freud was so fêted and they will also have the information to make decisions on whether his theories are justified. To acknowledge that Freud was a highly intelligent man is not to admit that he understood human nature. In fact, in his case studies and his determined turning of every neurosis to a sexual starting point is the most exasperating element one encounters in reading Freud - that of Freud's certainty of his own right point of view, without the evidence to support that viewpoint.
But certainly the reader will be able to follow up on the writing here. For those wishing to read Freud's own works, his books have been translated into English for those who are not able to read the original German. I have always found reading Freud to be a puzzling experience. On the one hand, the man had a very intelligent way of writing. On the other, he leapt to conclusions without bridging the gap with anything other than his own certainty. One can certainly "interpret" Freud in terms other than the organic or strictly literal, but any reading of his own writing will reveal to the reader that Freud didn't have a metaphorical interpretation in mind. But even if his ideas were often stubbornly wrong, Freud is well worth reading.
As Anthony Storr says, perhaps the greatest gift Freud gave to the world is the understanding that it is important to listen. To simply listen.
This is a highly recommended book for anyone not familiar with Freud's writings. Anthony Storr is well worth reading.
I dig Freud!.......2006-04-28
Yes, it's true that he pretty much reduced everything to sex in some way or other. But if you go beyond that little foible then you see that SF was one of the most brilliant people of the last century, without doubt. There's a section in here on his analysis of jokes and why we tell them that is priceless. And if you are honest with yourself then you will have to admit that he is exactly right on target. This book has definitely spurred my interest in the field and SF himself. I do think that the author glosses over SF's religious views and writings a little too glibly, as though he thinks that SF really didn't believe what he wrote. I actually think that these are some of the most profound of Freud's writings and some that I definitely intend to pursue further. All in all though, this is definitely worth your time and money.
A few words on Freud's genius .......2005-04-03
I concur with the other reviews I have seen on this book. It is a clearly written , fine introduction to Freud's work. It does what it can in the space it has but cannot provide the interpretation of interpretations of the great over- interpreter of us all.
Freud's genius was in making mankind see fundamental truths about its own nature it had conveniently ignored throughout its recorded history.His genius was also in understanding ways the mind works ( The defense mechanisms) which explain us to ourselves in a way we did not know how to before. His genius also consisted in a powerful capacity for interpreting and reinterpreting the realities before him, so that he gave us the sense that there is more in us than has been dreamnt in any of our philosophies.
The master investigator of the human mind was an immense and complicated mind himself. Storr shows us how some of it worked and developed.
Nice intro to Freud.......2004-01-09
I studied philosphy as an undergrad, theology as a grad student, dropped out of a Ph.D. program in philosophy to write fiction, and as a result, grew more curious about human beings and why they act the way they do.
So I took up the study of psychology. I'd heard a lot about Dr. Freud: about how great he was from some people and what a crackpot he was from others. Still, whatever view you have of him, you must admit (and I mean MUST admit) that the man was a genuis.
Dr. Storr's book is a nice intro to Freud; all the bases are covered in this little book. It's written in a simple style and offers clear explanations of Dr. Freud's views of sexuality, dreams, religion, and more. There are plenty of quotes throughout the book and biographical tidbits. I checked this book out at the library but will probably buy it to have on my bookshelf. A very interesting read and a solid foundation for any future reading of Freud.

Fiddling with the classics.......2005-01-02
As an old Bostonian and Cape Codder I bought this book for the sumptious cover photograph. Sadly Ms Broder suffers from the common cookbook author disease of clever fiddling with classic recipes. New England Boiled Dinner with stout, brown sugar and molasses! Made a sickly sweet mess. And my favorite, Fried Clams, made with Japanese Panko crumbs! You get the idea. Photos are great though.
A celebration of seafood.......2003-06-23
A book for those who like to cook, Brody's latest, organized by course, features lots of seafood. There are traditional dishes from chowders (without thickener!) to Bacalhou (Portuguese Salt Cod) to instructions for a real on-the-beach Clambake, as well as an indoor version. The gorgeous color photos are still-lifes with food, or neighborhood scenes or boats. There are Mussels Steamed with Wine and Garlic, Bonfire Mussels and Grilled Mussels, Steamed Clams and Fried Clams and Baked Stuffed Clams and Clam Fritters as well as White Clam Pizza and Spaghetti with White Clam Sauce.
There's a chapter on breakfast which features one of the few restaurant recipes, Cottage Street Bakery Dirt Bombs, luscious heavy donut-like balls, as well as Oatmeal Brulée, and Strawberries and Cream French Toast. Appetizers range from Classic Deviled Eggs to Boiled shrimp to Smoked Salmon Cheesecake. Among the soups are Oyster Stew and Bread Bowl Salmon Chowder. Mac's Calamari Salad comes from Mac's Seafood in Wellfleet and Sunset Slaw features beets, red cabbage and pickled cocktail onions.
Main courses range from New England Boiled Dinner, made with Stout, to Cranberry Orange Turkey Breast, Grilled Bluefish with Mustard and Lime, Sea Bass Poached in Ginger Fish Broth with Cilantro Pesto, Baked Stuffed Lobster (Ritz crackers and Maine crabmeat), and Grilled Sea Scallops (kabobs). Desserts range from kid-oriented (Chocolate-Covered Cape Cod Potato Chips, Mint Chip Brownie Ice Cream Sundae) to the Lavender Crème Brulee from Provincetown's Chester Restaurant, and Cranberry-Pear Linzertorte. Final chapters include drinks (Chatham's Candy Manor Hot Chocolate, Cranberry Martini) and condiments (Fish Stock, Beach Plum Jam, Pumpkin Cranberry Chutney).
Brody, the author of 22 cookbooks, lives on the Cape half the year and imparts a lot of Cape atmosphere and enthusiasm with the recipes. Recipe notes include background, cooking tips and variations (including a comprehensive lobster how-to). The lay-out is attractive and easy to read and the photographs are luscious. Brody has another winner.

CAUTION.......2007-01-18
This is without a doubt a beautiful book, however, the first project I attempted had errors in it. I even discussed the pattern with my local yarn store and they were skeptical it would work and asked to see the project when I completed it. Needless to say, after ripping out knitting 3 times, the pattern doesn't work. If you are a very experienced knitter, you may be able to work around the problems. I, however, am afraid to attempt another project in this book. Shame on the publisher for not posting corrections.
BUYER BEWARE.......2007-01-02
Yes, these designs *are* lovely, unfortunately, they are also riddled with errors. Errata or contact information? Nope. Not available. I can and do design my own knits, however, when I purchase a book of patterns I expect to be able to knit from it without spending hours re-writing the patterns. Having wasted more than enough expensive *luxury* yarn on this book from a designer who can't be bothered to adequately check her patterns for accuracy, I've dumped my copy in the trash and I certainly wouldn't recommend that anyone purchaes this book.
Frustrated but hopeful!.......2006-08-04
I, too, like the concept of combining classic styles and high quality materials, and the styles shown in this book are very attractive. Two observations, based on years of knitting. One: The patterns in this book seem to have been designed by someone who sews, not someone who knits. Note the many, admittedly well executed, pictures in the back showing side seams being sewn and front bands being set on. In almost every case, knitting in the round would be simpler and would result in a better-looking final product. Two: I have just completed the body of the lace-sleeved top at the end of the book (knitted in the round, it looks very nice) and have attempted three times to get the lace cap sleeves to come out right. The pattern simply doesn't line up for me. I've tried to check the web site listed in the front of the book, but as Cikk notes, it is impossible to follow up regarding errata. I've sent the publisher a query and hope for the best, but it's a frustrating end to an attractive project.

Classic, WEARABLE designs.......2006-02-08
This book has more classic, wearable designs than I have seen in a knitting book in a long time, and I do a lot of looking. There are multiple views of each design. While the yarns used are luxury (i.e. expensive), they are not outrageous, they are good quality (Jaeger, Rowan, Debbie Bliss) and information on each is given at the beginning of the book should you wish to substitute. There is also a nice primer in the back on various finishing techniques, including photos. I do wish the schematics (all together, in the back) were more complete and included details like neck depth, sleeve cap depth, etc.

I have been trying to find a diet to help me gain weight and prepare my body for pregnancy. I would even reccommend it to those merely just trying to eat healthy. It has so much helpful information concerning proper nutrients, calories and appropriate food items to eat. Near the end there are menus to help you through preparing for pregnancy and throughout your pregnancy. There is nothing for me to figure out, calculate or guess. It is all laid out. The hardest thing to do after reading this EXCELLENT book is shoppng for the food and then actually making it. It really could not be easier!!

I am a great fan of Danny Bonaduce, and I love him and Gretchen on their show Breaking Bonaduce. As for this book, it was really good, and held my interest, but it seemed unfinished somehow. I'm not sure what it was, but when I got done reading it something was missing. All in all it was very entertaining. He has had a crazy life. Gotta commend Gretchen for staying through it all.
A VERY Candid Self-Portrait. .......2006-03-06
A fascinating book. Bonaduce pulls NO punches in this auto-biography about the first half of his life. It is really funny but has it's poignant moments too. You find out what made Danny the person he is, by the imagery of his development into a child star to the downward spiral of drug-addicted has-been to his (apparently temporary) redemption. I think it demonstrates what we are starting to realize about Bonaduce now that he's on Reality TV. He knows his limitations and his weaknesses and he's honest about them, but he just can't control those self-destructive aspects of his own personality.

Danny Bonaduce is up to his usual antics. Somehow he masterfully made this book appear as if he is talking to you. He never seems to take himself too seriously, which is probably good considering all that has happened in his life. Yet, he also never passes blame when it is his own fault for what has happened in his life.
From the Partridge Family, to bad times, to his radio career, Bonaduce covers it all with honesty, detail and most of all humor. He discusses his wife and their relationship at length and it comes across as warm and loving, while always being endangered with Danny's outrageous behavior.
While reading this, you can't help but like and root for Danny.
What happened before Breaking Bonaduce appeared on television.......2005-11-15
This book came out before the more recent show, Breaking Bonaduce, and it certainly reveals how clever, honest and funny Bonaduce can be - in print. Perhaps it caught the public's attention and saved his flagging celebrity. It was certainly an entertaining read..at the time.
But that was then and it seems that Bonaduce has had to go to more extreme lengths to maintain the public's attention. That includes his most recent decision to appear on a reality show, Breaking Bonaduce. Unfortunately, having watched nearly every episode of Breaking Bonaduce, I can't help but wonder at where his ego ends and the truth begins. It has given me a different perspective on the book, if only in hindsight.
In the book (just as on the television show) he SEEMS to be honest about his drug addiction, his rehab, and his contrition. Far from being a braggart, he actually disparages himself, leading one to think that perhaps he is facing up to unpleasant realities - and making some serious changes in his life.
Perhaps he truly was doing so when he wrote this book. But my opinion of him has dropped more than a few notches since the recent show appeared and I saw his willingness to expose not just himself but his wife, his children and a therapist (who seem clearly baffled and out of his element at times) to his erratic behavior - and "erratic" is putting it nicely.
It is one thing to reveal himself on the written page but quite another to expose his family to public humiliation. The show has gotten plenty of attention, but the type that usually accompanies car wrecks- you can't HELP but look... but mostly in horror. I just hope this is a low point in Bonaduce's checkered career and that he can pull himself back from the brink before it is too late.
