5 out of 5 stars Ann Springer female war correspondent........2004-04-25

Ann Springer was one of the most famous female war correspondents during World War II.

For over 150 years American war correspondents have been reporting news and events from some of the most dangerous locations in the world. What is noteworthy, however, is up until sixty years ago most of these journalists were men. All of this changed somewhat during World War II when new horizons were opened to female journalists. Women now had secured military accreditation and the right to cover some of the biggest news events of their careers. One of these journalists was Ann Stringer, who in one word can be described as "gutsy," in her pursuit of the truth.

Bravo Amerikanski and Other Stories From World War II exposes us to a vivid and poignant narration of this courageous woman's experiences as a war correspondent during the Second World War as relayed to Mark Scott. Scott had previously edited a book entitled "Yanks Meet Reds: Recollections of US and Soviets Vets from the Linkup in World War II," and it was during this assignment that Scott had crossed paths with Stringer.

Stringer presents history as it should be taught in our high schools and universities. Her portrayal of the rotting human flesh of Nordhaussen, her interview with Ilse Koch, the wife of the camp commandant, and who was called the "Bitch of Buchenwald," are all reminders that wars are about people. It is not something in the abstract and history is not only about dates and names of battles. What could be more horrendous than entering the Dachau concentration camp and listening to the German commandant apologize to her because he ran out of fuel to keep the ovens running. To listen to him state that it was his fault they did not have the fuel and it was the fault of the Americans they had run out of fuel is beyond comprehension!
Her recounting about her personal tragedy loosing her husband, William John Stringer Jr., when he was on assignment in France was extremely moving. However this loss did not prevent Stringer from moving on with her life and as she states: "It was up to me to go on and do the things Bill and I had planned to do together-cover the war." That is exactly what she did in a brilliant and professional manner!

One of Stringer's most exciting assignments and probably the one she will be most remembered for is her reporting of the link up of the American and Russian soldiers at the Elbe River in Germany. To hear it straight from the "horse's mouth" is an eye opener. We can appreciate her feelings when she tells the reader that her first glimpse of a Russian was "that of a young man running down the street wearing nothing but under shorts and a grey cap." Stringer goes on to tell us that the soldier was dripping wet because he had just swam across the Elbe River to greet her crew and herself. We are then informed that the Elbe was swarming with Russian soldiers stripped to their shorts swimming across. When Springer and her associates were spotted the soldiers all called out "Bravo Amerikanski!" and "Bravo, Comrades!" You can just imagine the scene!

The last chapter of the book is very appropriately entitled "I'll Be Seeing You." These were the last words written to Stringer by her first husband prior to his death. Even after two subsequent marriages, she always had a soft spot in her heart for her first husband who she never forgot and hoped to meet one day in the hereafter. We also are reminded that war is cruel to all sides, no matter whether you win or lose. We should try and learn from history in order that past tragedies are not repeated. Hatred has no place in the world.

Ann Stringer never considered herself a crusader for women's liberation and one of her final comments in her book was "I'm just a person." Ann died on November 7th, 1990. Perhaps one day we will view the Ann Stringer story on the silver screen?

5 out of 5 stars Ann Stinger 's remarkable story finally told.......2002-08-28

This is the first book I am aware of to set down the extraordinary life and career of Ann Stringer in the detail it deserves. It's all the more compelling because it is autobiography---Stringer tells her story in a clear distinctive voice. Stringer's life is fascinating for its accomplishments and contradictions. She was tough enough to make it as a "newspaper man" under the most difficult conditions---as a war reporter during World War II. In the chauvinist world of war reporting --her reputation as a skilled reporter remarkably transcended her distracting physical beauty, including what one colleague called her "butter-melting eyes." Stringer's life and career seemed to begin and end with the loss of her fellow war-correspondent husband (Bill Stringer) to a badly timed burst of German gunfire somewhere in France. Bill's death prompted Stringer to take up where he left off and become a war reporter in the first place--a brilliant one at that---who stayed on even after the war to cover the Nuremberg Trials. But, her post-war life took incomprehensible and disastrous turns. This reader winced (as one suspects Ann did, herself) when she recounts how she ended up in the 1950s and 60s in Europe "baking meringue pies" for use in her German photographer-husband's pictures. Yet, as Ann Stringer tells her story, you somehow understand why she married a man whose countrymen killed her beloved Bill, stayed with him for several decades, and came gracefully to terms (better than many of us could) with her tragic life-wasting mistakes. There is something quintessentially female about the trajectory of Stringer's life in a really modern sense that makes you want to understand it better. This book provides a chance to begin to do so.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling collection of personal stories.......2002-06-06

Featuring an introduction by Walter Cronkite, "Bravo, Amerikanski!" And Other Stories From World War II by Ann Stringer (as told to Mark Scott) is an impressive and compelling collection of personal stories (sometime uplifting, sometimes heartbreaking) narrated by Ann Stringer, who lost her journalist husband in Normandy during World War II, and subsequently found the courage to take his place as a reporter. Beautiful, determined, and one hundred percent focused on her duty, Ann Stringer encountered both the horrors of war and the celebrations of freedom, including the liberation of Nazi concentration camps and the linkup of American and Soviet armies at the Elbe River. A highly recommended look at a unique woman's experience as a war correspondent, and the experiences and observations that would change her life forever, "Bravo, Amerikanski!" And Other Stories From World War II is a welcome and valued contribution to the growing library of World War II autobiographies and memoirs.

5 out of 5 stars A poignant recollection of what is known as "the good war.".......2001-03-24

I found Ann Stringer's story and recollections, as recorded by Mark Scott, to be exciting, sad, and poignant. She is a reminder to women of today that there were outstanding women like Ann Stringer who were making their own destinies by taking bold steps into unknown territory many decades before the "feminist movement" took hold in this country. Ann was one of a few courageous women who chose to be war correspondents and really put their lives on the line on the front lines of the war. The sad aspect was that she had hoped to do it all with her husband, who was also a war correspondent, but he was killed just outside Paris before she could join him. Even in the midst of her grief, she was determined to carry on, for herself and for his memory.

I personally experienced in 1985 the phenomenal 40th anniversary reunion of World War II American and Russian soldiers who had linked up at the Elbe River in Germany during the last days of the war so her recollection about being the second war correspondent to reach troops from both armies was particularly exciting. She got there while they were still joyously celebrating the reality that, now that the two great armies had met up, the German soldiers would be surrendering and the war would soon be over. Her true gutziness was revealed with her story about the lengths she went to in order to get back to Paris and be the first to file the story about the historic link-up! Yet her recollections did not end with the conclusion of the war. The book goes on to share her experiences following the war--going into the ravaged cities of Europe, seeing the despair, hopelessness, and hunger of the people throughout. She also covered the Nuremberg Trials for 11 months, witnessing first-hand the Nazi leadership on trial in the Palace of Justice. Finally, I was especially touched by the poignant way in which she reflected towards the end of the book about lessons to be learned: "Wars are cruel to all sides, no matter whether you win or lose. One of the major issues of the Trials was the condemnation of aggressive wars. Another was recognizing how vicious a doctrine of hatred can be. Yet another was that orders are not always enough. Just to obey an order does not absolve you of all guilt. We can still prevent wars by getting to know each other, to realize that "they" have some of the same problems "we" have...." For this and for historical reasons, everyone should read this book.

4 out of 5 stars A true representative of a great generation.......2001-03-16

I fully endorse "Bravo Amerikanski" by Ann Stringer (as told to Mark Scott) because it sheds light on a wonderful representative of that great generation of Americans whose young adulthood fell during World War Two. The book vividly brings back to life a gifted young woman who was struck by tragedy and then embarked on a fabulous career at an age when most young people today are only starting out in 'real life.' The story of Ann and Bill Stringer would make a sensational movie. I feel especially close to the story because, like its subjects, I am a journalist and knew of Bill and Ann Stringer before I read the book. I was privileged to cover the 50th anniversary commemorative ceremonies of D-Day on the Normandy beaches. It was there that I first heard of Bill and Ann Stringer and how they covered different stages of the Allied invasion of Western Europe. Their work, telling the American public how its sons were freeing Europe,is vividly recalled in this book. The atmosphere of field journalism in an area of conflict is also extremely well rendered. This book is a must for anyone interested in war reporting and tells a wonderful story about some very special people.

    Book Description

Authored by the editor of the leading travel magazine for people with disabilities, Emerging Horizons, this second edition of Barrier Free Travel continues to be the definitive guide to accessible travel for those who use a wheelchair, walker, or cane or have any physical ailment that may slow down their gait. It is a well-researched resource that contains detailed information about the logistics of planning accessible travel by plane, train, bus, and ship. Chapters include information on how to find and book an accessible room, cruises, ground transportation, overseas travel, advocacy, disability law and rights, air travel, protecting your wheelchair when you travel, how to find and work with a travel agent, and resources from around the world. This new edition includes a chapter on children's travel issues and — due to popular demand — a much expanded section on cruises. Expanded airport security procedures have changed the way we travel and thus the book offers new information about these security procedures and how they apply to travelers of limited mobility.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Resource!.......2007-08-02

Ms Harrington provides a thorough understanding of how to enjoy travel from a wheelchair and troubleshoot those annoying glitches that tend to pop up. The information is useful and fairly current. It has helped me to secure appropriate accomodations and understand my rights and possible options when hotel/travel problems occurred. Be prepared and enjoy travel again! I look forward to the next edition!

3 out of 5 stars Good for wheelers but flimsy for the slow walkers.......2007-06-11

I think it's a fairly good book, but has more focus to those limited to those in wheelchair and less for slow walkers. A couple of tips for slow walkers the author didn't mention was that several hot destination areas rent or loan for free wheelchairs or scooters. Such as all DC museums which loans out wheelchairs free of charge. (A piece of information I learned by chance.) Any travel desinations or activities for slow walkers? I'm still trying to figure that out as I try to plan vacations for my father who's a slow walker and rather a large person, too. Did you know that most Las Vegas hotels rent scooters to those slow walkers - and they let you store them in your room and take them out in the town. Though, the title does suggest that it's a guide for wheelers and slow walkers, it's probably more suited for "...A Nuts and Bolt Guide for Wheelers" and leave out the slow walkers as it doesn't offer too much on this subject.

5 out of 5 stars Second Edition Worth The Money.......2005-09-15

I bought the first edition of this book and I was interested to see if the second edition had any new information in it or if it was just the same book with a new cover. I have to say that I feel I got my moneys worth. The second edition not only contains updated information and resources, but it also contains a lot of new stuff too.

The cruise chapter is really enlarged and there seems to be new information in the other chapters too. There is also a new chapter about traveling with children, and it seems good, but it really didn’t apply to me.

I would definitely recommend the second edition of the book...even if you bought the first one. It’s important to keep current with the laws and learn about new resources, and I think that the second edition does a very good job of that.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but outdated information.......2005-09-11

I got this book as a primer on traveling with a disability. I have Multiple Sclerosis and am both a "Wheeler" and a "Slow Walker" depending on the day. I found the information in Candy Harrington's book quite helpful as a place to start learning about accessible travel, but was sad to learn that many of her references are now outdated.

Fortunately, there is a new edition of this book, published earlier in the year. I haven't purchased it yet, but intend to. With current information, if the new edition is as comprehensive as this one, it would warrant 5 stars. This is a book for anyone, young or old, who happens to live with a disability -- even a temporary one -- but doesn't intend to be defined by it. Get out and travel!

5 out of 5 stars It Helped Us.......2002-07-13

My wife had a stroke four years ago and now has to use a wheelchair. We both wanted to travel bur I didn't know the first place to look to find out the things we needed to know. The physical therapist said lots of people who have had strokes travel, so we wanted to give it a try. But it was hard to find information. That's where this book helped. It contains a lot of information you need. It should be titled "owners manual" as nobody tells you this stuff when you end up in a wheelchair.

The cruise chapter was very helpful to me. I just figured I could call up a travel agent and book a cruise with a handicapped cabin. I'm glad I read the book before I made that mistake. There is also a very helpful chapter about choosing a travel agent and how to travel on an airplane with a wheelchair.

We just got back from our first cruise and it was great. I wouldn't have been able to do it without this book. If you are even only thinking about travel, I urge you to read this book. We are already planning our next trip.

5 out of 5 stars Like having a personal Spanish chef, historian, and friend in your kitchen.......2006-08-08

I had a roommate from Madrid once who was an amazing cook (decided to be a doctor instead of a chef though sadly!), and owning this book is like having him right there on my bookshelf to read anytime I want.

He would cook every Thursday for a small dinner party he started in our neighborhood, and while he was cooking he would tell everyone the history and culture behind the dish. This book does the exact same thing (but with pictures haha).

How do I know that this book is the real thing? They got the story and recipe behind paella right! Even many Spaniards don't know the real story behind this dish!

This book makes you care about the food you make from it.

    5 out of 5 stars PERFECTO!.......2006-03-17

Love this book! As I have stated in all of my Culinaria series reviews, awesome pictures. I love how these books aren't hokey cookbooks. They're beautifully laid out by region. You get to experience the culture of Spain in this book, not just the food. One thing that deeply satisfied me was that there is a nice section on the Basque region. This region is truly a separate nation in itself. I visited Spain several years ago and their food was wonderful. If you're looking to explore Spanish cuisine, get this book!

5 out of 5 stars Best culinary book.......2004-11-18

The book explains the origin of the different dishes and ingredients including their local names. It makes cooking a marvelous experience. Excellent cook book plus a magnificent coffee table book. We love it.

A perfect book for one either wanting to learn more about Spain or its cooking. The recipes are often simple, always marvelous and take into account the true spirit of the country. If you want to understand Spain and Spanish cooking in all its glory then here it is- there is no better.

5 out of 5 stars An orgy of pictures and information.......2002-03-02

This book is a bargain. From recipes to historical anecdotes this book is a blessing. Everything you wanted to know and see about Spain's gastronomical heritage. The pictures are beautiful and large. The perfect coffee and kitchen table book. It makes any other country jealous. There's ham, wine, brandy, cigars, fruit, seafood, etc. This is a great book to give anyone interested in Spain. As a fellow proud Spaniard I certainly enjoyed it and it is one of the best reference visual books in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars A practical renovation book vs. a nice picture book.......2007-07-23

I am never motivated to write a review for purchased books, but this book is so outstanding that I must. Essentially, this book actually provides useful information and a methodology of thinking which allows the home owner to solve problems in renovating for repairing his house. As other reviewers have noted, one reads the book looking to find answers to specific problems and amazingly the information is there! The reason for the success I believe is two fold. This author has done this work before, that is, renovate OLD homes, as apposed to a contractor who simply tears out and builds new. He has empathy with the home owner. And two, the author is succinct in his information. He doesn't waste page after page with reviews of tools you might need (don't you hate those!) He doesn't waste pages on photographs of workers holding up a level! He doesn't waste pages simply telling the reader, "oh, you better hire someone for that, and that, and that ..." And more importantly he is writing to the home owner who is a 'do it your selfer' is therefore is concerned about expenses. He simply has managed to provide information which is actually useful, in a well written, beautifully photographed, inspiring book. If you really need advice about old homes, I can't recommend this enough.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Earned Its Five Star Rating!.......2007-06-21

I pulled this book off a library shelf just to browse it. Wow! My house is 101 years old so maybe; I am biased. But George Nash is a very knowledgable lover of old houses. He must have worked as a building inspector since he knows so much. It is full of great information and photos. People who should read this book are; house lovers, real estate agents, restoration contractors, and anyone thinking about buying an older home. I love it!

      5 out of 5 stars Rebnovation.......2007-05-26

I purchased this book for my 21 year old son who is an apprentice carpenter for a contractor who does renovation of houses. This is one of the finest renovation books I have had the opportunity to review. It has the renovation coverage that will be a great boon to my son in his learning of the carpentry trade. I have been an electrical contractor for over 40 years and have a lot of experience in all of the trades. I am impressed with this book. It will be of great benefit to my son as an overall reference book in renovation. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars The Bible for renovationg old houses.......2007-02-07

This should be one of the first books on your new-old house's bookshelf when you move in. Its advice on a multitude of repairs including repairing the pulley systems in your old windows, how to repair rot damage anywhere inside or outside of your house, etc. is extensive and very helpful. This book is a great resource for the do-it-yourselfer...or, if you want to hire someone, at least you will be knowledgable enough after reading this book as to whether or not they are doing a proper job.

      Book Description

Available November 2003 Frugal, thrifty, enduring, colorful, comforting, warm. These words capture both the spirit of Iowa quilters through the centuries and the fabrics they stitched together. In Patchwork, Jacqueline Schmeal celebrates the lives of Iowa quilters and the enduring beauty of historic Iowa quilts.

Drawing on written records by and interviews with contemporary quilters, many of whom were born in the early years of the twentieth century, Schmeal presents the life histories of these hard-working yet inspired artists. Sisters Elsie Ball and Mary Ball Jay of Fairfield—charging one and a quarter cents per yard of thread—kept meticulous records of each of the 135 quilts they stitched between 1935 and 1970. Ivan Johnson plowed his fields by day and quilted vivid designs by night. Cloth scraps were so precious to Barbara Chupp, an Amish quilter, that she became known for her mosaic piecing. Members of the Sunshine Circle, organized in 1912 in a Quaker church in Earlham, still quilt together today. Mennonite quilter Sara Miller became famous nationwide for her fabric store, Kalona Kountry Kreations. Their stories—of impoverished childhoods, hardscrabble work, and strong families—are enhanced by over seventy color photographs of an unbelievably rich collection of historic quilts ranging from the early 1800s to the 1950s.

Offering both a glimpse into the daily lives of twentieth-century quiltmakers and an amazing treasury of Iowa's historic quilts, Patchwork is a loving tribute to the creative spirit that links modern-day quilters to the patterns and traditions of their predecessors.

You don't have to be from Iowa to appreciate the beautiful quilts and fantastic quilters from that state. Add this wonderful book to your library of quilt books. It is well presented and a true treasure...Thanks, Jacqueline! Your fan club is growing!

4 out of 5 stars A must for the quilt historian.......2005-02-17

If quilt history is your thing then you must add this to your library. Several Iowa quilters are featured with heart warming stories of each featured. My favorite Iowa Quilter Sara Miller is one featured. Also a heart warming story about a quilting group.

4 out of 5 stars History behind hymn writers........2007-09-01

A 2007 summer reading list mini review.

It is well with my soul seems like it is going to be like many other books out there dedicated tothe stories behind great hymns. In reality, however, Rachael Phillips book is conerned more about the great lives behind the great works. She paints portraits of Spafford, Bliss, Cowper and Havergal that expose their strengths but also give even coverage of the difficulties they each faced.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book!.......2007-03-28

I never really knew much about the great hymn writers of old, so I bought this book. The stories in this book are both informative and very interesting too. I could hardly put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Great reading for the entire family!.......2006-11-02

Barbour Publishing's "Heroes of the Faith" series found an able storyteller in Rachael Phillips, a Christian writer and humorist whose talents as a researcher and biographer are clearly on display in the book, Well with My Soul. This work, suitable for preteens on up, gives vivid life-portraits of four of Christendom's most colorful and prolific hymn writers.

Phillips, as she did so well with her "Heroes" treatments of Billy Sunday, Frederick Douglass and Saint Augustine, once again weaves historical and personal details together to give us very human characters. Horatio Spafford, whose intrepid efforts for Christ and His church during the era of D.L. Moody and the Great Chicago Fire, suffered the dark tragedy of losing four young daughters during their Atlantic crossing with his wife in the Ville du Havre disaster of 1873. Phillips delves into the wells of Spafford's emotions as he wrestled with this and other spiritual challenges that resulted in such important hymn poems as "It Is Well with My Soul."

I think it laudable that this biographer doesn't shrink from mentioning such unfortunate and unflattering details as the petty and uncharitable treatment Spafford and others received from fellow churchmen, as well as Spafford's own idiosyncrasies which surfaced later in his life. But the inclusion of such blemishes is always seasoned by Phillips' compassion and charm with which she sums up her subjects' true greatness, namely their faith in a God of unfailing grace and providence.

Other stories in this very readable volume tell about Phillip P. Bliss ("Hallelujah! What a Savior"), William Cowper ("God Moves in a Mysterious Way") and Frances Ridley Havergal ("Take My Life and Let It Be"). This book would be wonderful as supplemental reading during family times, and both educational and joyful material for hymn lovers everywhere.

            Sincerely,
            Mark N. Aikins

            Book Description

Consider the worshipful lyrics of "Holy, Holy, Holy"; the comforting assurance of "His Eye Is On the Sparrow"; the trusting submission of "Have Thine Own Way, Lord"; the bold declaration made by "O for a Thousand Tongues." They are some of our greatest hymns--and some of the most powerful words in Christendom. Lyrics that help us grasp the reality of faith, set to beautiful music that speaks to our hearts.

The stories behind the hymns are powerful as well. In this book the authors have detailed the intriguing and often tragic circumstances from which many of our best-loved hymns came. They are stories about the private struggles and personal triumphs these men and women hymn writers experienced--stories that give their already-meaningful songs added significance.

Great Christian Hymn Writers is a wonderful resource for worship services, devotional talks, and home schools, as well as for use in your private devotions. And it's worthwhile reading for anyone who's interested in learning where these hymns came from and how it is that they continue to affect us so much.

            Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant, but the content is too light.......2005-08-06

Great Christian Hymn Writers is a pleasant book providing short (one to four pages) summaries of 47 hymn writers with another group of "one hit wonders". The stories are quite short and generally aren't given the space to develop much of sense of the character or the times that these people lived through. For example, we are told that Sarah Adam's (Nearer, My God to Thee) mother died when Sarah was 5. Unfortunately, that traumatic event is not explored in the remainder of the story. Presented in this manner this potentially life-changing event is reduced to almost a trivia question. How did this event change Sarah and her music? This question is never answered.

After a while, the stories meld together with little to differentiate one from another. There is no music notation in the book and nothing to tell of the struggle to marry text to music. If you are looking for a book on hymn writers that is best read in short snippets, this may be what you are looking for. Otherwise, it is just too shallow of a sip into 400 years of Christian hymns.

These are selections from the long record of Jewish heroism, selections of those whose names and stories are well- known from King David down to the rescuers of Entebbe. This is a very small selection of the many many Jews who often in a quiet and unknown way showed great courage in defending their own people. What is somewhat sad is that the ranks of these heroes , and often these martyrs , are growing all the time because of the constant effort of enemies to destroy the Jewish people. The stories of the great great majority of those who have fought with courage, defended their people and often paid the greatest price for it, are largely untold.
