5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful, Fun and Insightful Journey!!!.......2007-01-09

Burny's Journeys: Lessons and Confessions of an Aging Hipster is a very well-written story which will takes you along with Burny on his odyssey through life and his quest for truth and happiness. Like Odysseus, Burny encounters many very challenging, difficult and, at times, very dangerous situations and trials. Also like Odysseus, through the use of his sharp wits, depth of character and indominatable sense of humor, Burny emerges from every challenge victorious and much enriched as a human being for the experience. Burny's insights into himself, his friends and life in general, all of which are delightfully seasoned by Burny's wry, truthful and good-hearted sense of humor, make this a wonderful and enriching ride. Burny is a great story-teler and traveling companion. Take this opportunity NOW to travel along with Burny on his journeys!!! They are not to be missed!!!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for both parent & child to read........1999-06-14

This book should be a requirement in every home. It is wriiten for a teen but shoul dbe read by both parent and child. The concept of the 40 assets is fundamentally simple. The book defines the assets and then gives advice on how the adolescent, parent(s), community, school, and congregation can help to ensure that a child is brought up with all of the assets they need to be a successful person. It has examples of the successes that communities across the country have had setting the concepts of the assets into into motion. The excellence of the book is reinforced by a lecture I attended by Dr. Benson 2 months ago. The concept of the developmental assets being the framework for a successful, well-rounded person makes perfect sense. It should be adopted as a National standard.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for teens and their parents!.......1999-05-19

We like the book so much that we are adopting the asset building concepts featured!

As the Red Ribbon Chair for the Red Ribbon Coalition, I will urge volunteer coordinators to put at least one copy in their school library!

Irvine Unified School District's Guidance Resources will include the list of 40 Developmental Assets (from the book) in our 1999/2000 parent handbook.

This is an excellent resource for anyone who cares about helping youth succeed!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite low-fat cookbooks.......2001-07-02

Most low-fat cookbooks contain lots and lots of recipes of food you'd never actually eat. And if you would try it, your kids definitely wouldn't. I like this one, because it has great recipes that even your kids will eat. It also has a basic primer in the front about nutrition and losing weight. Maybe I should get this one out again and review it!

      5 out of 5 stars Taste! You'll never know you're being good!.......1999-02-13

I have extremely high cholesterol hereditarily. When my doctor and I decided one last try at getting it down through diet, my husband grimaced. (I had been put on straight tuna once and he wasn't looking forward to this!) When I made the first meal from this book, all he could say was, "Wow, it actually tastes wonderful!" But, when I made the chocolate chip cookies, he actually said they were the best he's ever had! We have now made several of the recipes, including the homemade tortilla chips, and have loved each one. This is my FAVORITE low-fat cookbook ever! I just wish they'd come out with another one.

Afflicted with cystic fibrosis since birth, doctors told Andy Lipman's parents he'd be lucky to reach age 25. Over the years, however, Andy has found strength and determination in his athletic pursuits, has surprised his doctors, and defied the medical odds. On his 25th birthday, he picked up a pen and began to write his story. Now 28, healthy, happy, and very much alive, Andy shares his bittersweet story with humor and wit.

                      Description:
In the context of understanding motivations for clinical research participation, many authors consider issues such as informed consent and how patients perceive the research method and process. However, many investigations focus only on one method of research, most commonly the randomised controlled trial. Understanding how chronically ill members of one specific patient group respond to all requests for research participation are rare. Cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic condition whereby those affected are used to taking a wide array of treatments and attending a specialist care centre over many years, and are generally knowledgeable about their condition, represents an ideal case for investigating how staff requests for clinical research participation are accepted or declined. Using Bloor's systems of relevance framework for risk behaviour and risk reduction, specialist CF centre patients' motivations for participation or non-participation in clinical research can be understood. The framework takes into account two sets of conceptual oppositions: habituation and calculation, constraint and volition. These oppositions represent a range along a continuum of risk behaviour rather than being absolute distinctions. Decisions to participate are influenced mainly by the patient's state of health at the time of request, the nature of the trial and the social context within which sufferers are placed. Understanding why chronically ill patients refuse some requests and yet accept others may assist researchers in designing protocols that take these factors into account and achieve the desired numbers of participants whilst protecting those in vulnerable positions.

                        Book Description

Leos Janacek (1854-1928), who wrote such highly acclaimed operas as The Cunning Little Vixen, Jenufa, and Katya Kabanova, as well as choral, chamber, and orchestral pieces, was one of the most original, complex, and appealing artists of the twentieth century. Inspired by the rhythmical and melodic strains of Czech speech patterns and Moravian folk songs, Janacek used unconventional composition principles to create a new musical style that blends tremendous energy and lyricism, passion and tenderness. His music continues to enchant listeners, and his operas, in particular, address universal human emotions and moods that remain strikingly relevant for today's audiences.

While Janacek's works are performed frequently on stages around the world, little is known about the composer himself. In this biography, the first to appear in English in over two decades, Mirka Zemanova draws on previously unavailable Czech-language sources, memoirs, and letters, including Janacek's intimate correspondence with Kamila Stoesslova, his great love and sometimes reluctant muse. Zemanova depicts a shy, lonely, moody, and self-doubting man with a fiery temper and an intensely independent and proud spirit. She also reveals a man who glorified women in his operas but treated them cruelly in his own life.

The author tells the fascinating story of an isolated artist who was virtually unknown outside of his native Moravia until his early sixties, when the triumphant Prague premiere of Jenufa brought Janacek international fame. She sheds light on the creative surge in his final years, attributing his remarkable late flowering to the success in Prague, his fierce patriotic pride in the newly independent Czechoslovakia at the end of World War I, and, perhaps most of all, his passionate attachment to Kamila Stoesslova. From the time they met, when Janacek was sixty-three and she was twenty-five, to his death eleven years later, Kamila held the composer under her spell and inspired many of his late works. Zemanova also thoroughly chronicles Janacek's ardent courtship of and tempestuous marriage to Zdenka Schulz, his extramarital love affairs and infatuations, and the tragic deaths of his two children.

This work sheds all sorts of new light on what by now might be thought of as a well-known story. The author's intuitive familiarity with the Czech sources is most helpful to non-Czech readers and her musicological comments on the composer's works often enlightening. I enjoyed the rigorous discipline with which, as a Czech writer with total facility in English, she stuck to her purpose with crisp and specific phraseology, and resolutely focussed on the facts of the subject's life in a coherent sequence. Thus she puts his life in a context less reverential, bemused or tentative than much of what has hitherto been written for English readers.Essential reading for all students of Janacek.

                        5 out of 5 stars A PERFECT CHRISTMAS PRESENT.......2003-12-15

I have recently given a copy of Mirka Zemanova's new biography of Janacek to my mother, who has a serious interest in classical music. She was delighted with the book. She felt the author was illuminating on the background (so important to have the history of Janacek's native Czechoslovakia explained!) and very perceptive about Janacek's influences as well as his style (especially since much of Janacek's music is rooted in the type of folk music which is not familiar to those outside Central and Eastern Europe). My mother was particularly impressed with the author's vivid description of Janacek's personality. What a delight to have a book whose author obviously has a deep sympathy for her subject, but does not clog her account of his life by conjectures!

A perfect Christmas present for any classical music lover.

3 out of 5 stars A Solid Biography - but lacking in the excitement of the man.......2003-03-03

With the 150th anniversary of Janacek's birth approaching next year, maybe now is the time for a reinvigoration of a bibliography about this composer. Although many books have appeared in recent times about him, few stay in print for an extended amount of time. Forthcoming publications include John Tyrrell's biography of a composer he has written about more than any other academic (published by Faber in 2004) and this spring a new volume from Yale, called `Janacek and his World' edited by Michael Beckerman. Mirka Zemanova, a native-Czech, now living in London and regular contributor to many opera programmes, has pipped them to the post with the publication of her Janacek bibliography.

Many rightly raved about Mirka Zemanova's previous contribution to the Janacek bibliography, her edition of the composer's uncollected essays on musicology. The volume included many previously unseen, or at least untranslated pieces of writing by Janacek. Various reviews of performances in Brno for the local journals and newspapers were enlightening when considering the many influences on Janacek's own writing, the Brno premieres of Cavalleria Rusticana or Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades influencing Janacek's Jenufa, for example. Many passages have seeped their way into recent writing about the composer's life and works with the same regularity as quotes from John Tyrrell's many documentary translations, the letters to Kamila Stosslova particularly.

Zemanova has decided to eschew use of Tyrrell's great translations of the letters and various documents, and returned to the original sources, itself not a bad idea. For the English speaking Janacek fan though, perhaps more cross references to those masterly volumes wouldn't have been too bad a thing, and her dismissal of some of Tyrrell's work is misplaced. Zemanova has great command of her material at best, but occasionally she is rather prosaic on a life that was so lacking in humdrum. Her outlining of details of the Vienna premiere of Jenufa, rather than dwelling on the Prague premiere (itself very important, but perhaps a little too glorified in recent literature) is to be commended. Her scatty musical analysis is a disappointment. Although she outlines her concern with focussing less on the `works' and more on the `life', her style is not always up to the dramatics of Janacek's life. I would recommend a reading of the composer's wife's memoirs for some of the real drama.

It is a mixed book, fitting for such a mixed man, filled with facts that weren't available to previous biographers, but lacking in the grasp of some other regular contributors to Janacek literature. Hopefully, however, it will be the first of a stream of issues about this fascinating composer in the year leading up to the 150th anniversary of his birth, and the 100th anniversary of the premiere of his first great opera Jenufa.

Leos Janácek spent the last decade of his life infatuated with a woman 37 years his junior, and she inspired many of the Czech composer's masterpieces. That story is well known. With this book, we hear from the other woman--his wife. Zdenka Schulz was not quite 16 when she married Janácek (he was 27 at the time); to hear her tell it, his unpleasant side emerged even before the wedding, and their relationship went mostly downhill for the next 47 years. In Zdenka's tart narrative, Janácek is selfish, imperious, and absorbed by one flirtation after another--culminating in his passion for Kamila Stosslova, whose husband seems to have tolerated the affair far more than Zdenka did. Janácek's affair with a singer had already led to an "informal divorce," whereby he and Zdenka occupied the same house but led separate lives. However, this did not prevent Zdenka from feeling tortured by her husband's relationship with Stosslova, in whose company he died.

After her husband's death in 1928, Janácková dictated these memoirs; long known by scholars to exist, they have never before been published (this version follows one in the original Czech). Noted Janácek scholar John Tyrrell has translated and beautifully edited the material. He is careful to sort out when Janácková's memory is failing her and when she may be coloring the truth. The book is a companion piece to the more important Intimate Letters (containing Janácek's correspondence with Stosslova), which Tyrrell also edited. After reading this entertaining, ultimately forlorn volume, readers may want to return to Janácek's music for a reminder of the profound emotions he evidently couldn't share with his wife. --David Olivenbaum
