Martha Wakenshaw shares her experiencing of the children who come to her for healing. This Child of Mine is a deeply personal account of the author's fifteen years of practice as a child therapist. Using play and expressive arts therapy, Wakenshaw deals with emotionally traumatized children and presents the healing relationship that occurs between therapist and patient on a human, rather than clinical level.

The author's career spans a therapy center for pre-schoolers where she is too quickly made Director, a group home for young teenagers never adopted, an elementary school of high-risk children, to her own private practice. Strong, emotional book.......2002-08-14

Be prepared for some of the most horrific stories of situations that some children live through. Martha Wakenshaw is a professional therapist who has dealt extensively with children from some of the most frightening family situations that you can imagine. As you read this book you will be transported to some of the most horrific situations that a child could live through. Be prepared to cry for the child and for the therapist as she deals with a child welfare system that seems to have very little interest in a child's welfare and insurance companies that think a lifetime of abuse can be resolved in ten weeks. Feel the pain of the children, feel the pain and love of the therapist, feel the frustration as both try to work through their difficulties. "This child of mine" shows Martha Wakenshaw's committment to the children brought to her for healing. It is not another child with another problem, they are real children which she accepts as if they were her own child.

Ms. Wakenshaw has given of herself to the children and families as well as to the readers of this book. She does not gloss over details that are traumatic and real nor does she exploit them. This poignant glimpse into the life a therapist working with traumatized children is not easy to read but I believe is essential to anyone considering working with children. Ms. Wakenshaw opens her heart to us as she did to the children, sometimes to her own detriment. You will feel what she felt and see through her eyes as she desperately tries to save fragile little lives. You may get new insights into the laws and policies surrounding the protection of children and families. Ms. Wakenshaw uses poetic imagery to describe what she was going through in a way that is real and moving. You will never forget this book.

Diabetes is a disease that destroys if one alters from the narrow path. As the negativity of the road and limited resolutions of the disease is evident. Alternatives are needed to stay positive and hopeful in negative situations. Clearly people have beed totally healed of diabetes and not by medical methods. More than just a dry, step-one-step-two, how-to book........1999-05-19

Featuring interesting historical information, this book includes many backgrounds of formal gardens and topiary, offered as sidebars and archive drawings. There is extensive information on creating forms and shaping topiary. The illustrator's drawings echo the whimical sentiment of topiary, while the authors' offering of botanical information help the hobbyist understand the science of what they are doing. I cannot imagine anyone reading this book and not bursting with ideas to make their own gardens come to life.

A Satisfactory Introduction to Topiary.......1998-08-27

Before reading this book I had no experience with topiary. After reading this book I felt like I knew a little. I found that the text focuses on the history of the use of topiary. There were some sections on what plants to use and there was a LONG section on creating different wire forms. The illustrations are all hand drawn while I would have prefered to see actual pictures of the plants. This book is probably better for someone who knows a little about gardening basics instead of someone like me who knows nothing.

I was disapointed to say the least.......1998-01-27

As difficult as it is to find information on the art of topiary, this disapointing book gives a very vague picture. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about the book is the illustrations. It seems more like a comic strip than an information resource. For instance the 3 or 4 pages given to standards shows hand drawn renderings that look like my 5 year old drew them. It is interesting that they devoted so many pages to different types of wire shapes. It seems obvious to me that vines will grow on a rack shaped like a bird, and they will grow on a rack shaped like an elephant. I just didn't "get" showing us all the different shapes, and giving them all their own page. Good book for the novice, check it out at the library however, there isn't much reason to own it.

When I reach the heat unit in my curriculum in middle school I throw the textbook out the window and pick up this marvelous guide. This is THE book for teaching heat to middle schoolers. The students loved this unit. I recommend all the GEMS guides. They are interesting and fresh when compared to the textbooks. If I could use only one though, this would be the ONE!

A wonderful account of an aspiring musician..........2002-03-26

First: I am a HUGE Billy Bragg fan and have been since about 1990.

Second: This book was excellent.

The book really gives a great background on Billy's growing up, his influences, and his rise to "fame". It is great to see even the simple insights into his music, like the girl from "The Saturday Boy"...and how she approached him after all those years. Of course, he did not remember her, but that makes it all that much more ironic and colorful.

The book itself was clearly written, well-organized, and most importantly it finally gave us fans a great look into Billy's life and music.

Summary: ALL fans of Billy's should buy this book.

Billy Bragg's - Still Suitable for Miners might be great for Miner but not for Americans. If you are looking for insights into the music and the motiviations that created the great body of music avoid this book.

As a Billy Bragg fan for many years I was thrilled to hear of the release of this biography, but even more anxious to see who was writing it for him. For as often happens when famous people let strangers script their thoughts; either they match /compliment the person they are writing about or they steal the show.

Here Collins works perfectly. It's almost as if two old buddies had been in a pub one afternoon and decided to thrash out a book one one of their lives. Although it must be noted that Billy is a very personable character, who is very easy to strike up a conversation with. That being said, Collins pulled off my walk in the park in matching Bragg's wit, humour, tales of a bananna and a woman (I can't say anymore) and political morals.

I love Billy Bragg and what he has adamantly stood for all his life, and I think I may just come to love Andrew Collins too. But one thing is for sure, this biography has earned my respect double big time!

Still Suitable for Bragg Fans........1999-01-31

Andrew Collins gives a somewhat complete biography of Billy Bragg from cradle to school to the Army to Wembley Stadium to Mermaid Avenue(some photos are included). Billy's development as songwriter and performer is material that all fans will enjoy. Collins also explores the business side of a musician that has remained true to his beliefs and also made a comfortable living. For North American fans, Collins gives us little insight into Billy's U.S. career beyond touring. This chapter may be about to be written with the success of Mermaid Avenue and his Grammy nomination. Billy is truly a great musician and human. I'm happy this book could document a life that has been full of great events and, in many ways, just getting started in the U.S.
