5 out of 5 stars An adventurous and purposeful life well lived.......2006-03-28

This review addresses two questions: 1) why read a lengthy biography(s) of Sir Aurel Stein who, though famous in his lifetime and a continuing giant in scholarly circles, is today little known to the general public; and 2) which of the two biographies written about Stein should one read: Jeanette Mirsky's "Sir Aurel Stein--Archaeological Explorer" or Annabel Walker's "Aurel Stein--Pioneer of the Silk Road." (Both are available through Amazon.com.)

As to the first question, Stein was the pioneering and dominant archaeologist in the re-discovery during the early 20th century of the ancient civilizations of the eastern Silk Road. The desert and mountain areas he worked in western China and its borderlands with India and Tibet were among the most physically challenging on the planet. And his various projects in life extended well beyond that into India, Pakistan, Persia, and Syria. So a biography of Stein is both an immersion in ancient history and its resurrection, and a tale of adventure and exploration--though, let it be said, it is adventure without theater, because Stein (and thus perforce his biographers) in his writings focused not on the many perils he encountered but on the scientific results he achieved. The adventurous life and amazing fortitude of the man nonetheless come through between the lines.

The other, perhaps greater, reason to read a biography of Aurel Stein is not what he discovered, but who he was: his was the life fully lived. He remained active, healthy, and fully engaged until his death in Kabul in 1943 at age 81 on the verge of yet another archaeological expedition, and he lived his entire life vigorously and focused on a set of themes and projects for investigation which made that life amazingly productive, unified, and successful. It's what we all wish for ourselves--and from which many or most of us fall short. So this is a "feel good" story of human striving and great accomplishment. Until the modern era, we often read biographies of "great men" less for the particulars of the events they molded than for the models of character these people offered of how to live a good and significant life. An account of Stein's life is highly impressive and vicariously comforting in that regard, irrespective of your interest in the archaeology of the Silk Road.

As to the second question, there are two biographies from which to choose (itself a tribute to Stein, since few archaeologists are deemed fit subjects by even one biographer.) Jeanette Mirsky deserves great credit as his pioneer biographer. But Annabel Walker's is the book to read first. If it hooks you on Stein, then you will also find Mirsky's worthwhile, since it in some ways complements Walker's.

The two authors take different approaches. Walker's is a classic biography of external analysis which sorts the evidence. It is deep in insight, and moves quickly as a page-turner because Stein was always looking to the next project, which evolved logically out of his last endeavor or from new opportunities he encountered and exploited. His life thus follows a logical and linear but fascinating trajectory with a real sense of momentum. It's a sophisticated adventure story with a great spirit of unity and drive, and Walker captures that and with much insight smoothly analyzes the transition points (i.e., what lead to the next phase or episode) in a fast-paced but thorough account.

Mirsky's book is half devoted to excerpts from Stein's letters--which were voluminous, highly literate, and have been remarkably well preserved. The other half of her book is Mirksy's narrative framework of analysis (which in some cases exceeds even Walker's perceptiveness of Stein.) So with Mirsky you have part analysis, and part Stein in his own words. This has advantages and disadvantages. It gives you a more direct feel for Stein's character in his own words, and through his letters covers some topics more deeply than Walker does, such as Stein's tactics in dealing with Chinese officials, the British bureaucracy's view of their headstrong employee (he was nominally a school inspector in India but continually sought special dispensation to focus on archaeological projects), and his generosity towards his subordinates.

But Mirsky's attempt to mix analytical narrative with letter excerpts on a number of occasions lapses into more trivial detail from Stein's letters than necessary (Mirsky's book at 547 pre-index pages is no more complete in essence than Walker's at 355 pages), and at some points (particularly accounts of Stein's early life), it misses the forest for the trees and produces some confusion, in part due to failure to provide adequate editorial notes to explicate some of the names/incidents recounted in Stein's letters. Neither book, unfortunately, comes anywhere close to providing adequate maps with which to follow Stein's many journeys. But Walker's book is slightly better than Mirsky's in that regard.

Bottom line: read Walker's book first. It is enough. But if you like this man as much as I did and get "hooked," you will much enjoy Mirsky's book and a more direct exposure to Sir Aurel Stein in his own words and to some of Mirsky's very insightful observations as a follow-on.

4 out of 5 stars Aurel Stein: Pioneer of the Silk Road.......2000-07-03

Aurel Stein was not without his faults. From all indications, he believed in the white man's burden, and probably would have tolerated fascism for its efficiency except for the realization that Hitler's brand of it included anti-Semitism, and Stein was Jewish. Even the subtitle of the book, Pioneer of the Silk Road, is Eurocentric: there were already people living in the areas Stein explored, members of tribes Stein seems to have had no interest in or ability to differentiate among. Stein was the first white archaeologist in the area, and he did open up new methods of what can only be called archaeological plunder. Stein felt that if he hadn't taken those antiquities, there was a good chance they would have been destroyed where they were. He didn't know they'd sit unviewed in the British Museum for almost a hundred years after he took them. The real crime is that they are not now given back to China to help right past injustices. Stein's racial and cultural attitudes were a product of his time. He was too stuck in the framework of his own culture to be able to judge any other culture except by the standards of his own. Annabel Walker acknowledges Stein's shortcomings and yet brings him to life as an interesting, sympathetic individual. He loved his family and friends and dogs dearly, but beyond that, he loved the great Asian wildernesses that he roamed in, often at extreme peril. Walker evokes those places, makes us see them as he did. Walker shows us the "pluck", as Stein liked to call it, of the man, as well as his determination to shape his life as he wanted it, to pursue what interested him. He died the way he lived, in action, pursuing his dream even in his old age. Annabel Walker writes with insight and equanimity. Her research is painstaking, her writing style enjoyable and thought-provoking.

5 out of 5 stars Memory of lost civilizations.......2000-01-25

It is only through the work and people like Aurel Stein that we can retain knowledge of the past which otherwise would be forgotten and lost in the hands of specialized predators and thieves. Well written book.

    1 out of 5 stars Thief.......1999-11-06

The man and his "competitors" were not above your common grave diggers. They simply dug and hauled treasures and historic artifacts out of their resting places and rubbed a people and the land of their heritage.

Shame on those who consider them true archeologists.

      Book Description

To succeed in business today, an individual must be smart, competitive, resilient, tenacious, and fearless. In short, he or she needs a good, old-fashioned backbone. In How to Grow a Backbone, Susan Marshall, a top business consultant and former executive, outlines skills that readers can develop and perfect to become stronger, more confident, and more influential on the job. Using straight talk laced with wry humor, the author draws upon actual business situations from a variety of companies and industries to show how a strong backbone can change not only the outcome of the situation, but also how one is perceived.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty effective book with a very nuts and bolts approach.......2005-09-22

Encountered it first as an audio book and then decided to buy it as a print book. The book is small in size but has an impactful message. How to be assertive and cooperative at the same time. Very useful tips on how to achieve both in the workplace. Highly recommend it for people like me who cave in on pursuing their agenda in our current corporate culture.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! This author doesn't kid around..........2005-01-16

After finishing Disc 1 of 7 it's a thorough pleasure to hear a practical approach to career development. While attitude is great, sooner or later the rubber hits the road. Ms Marshall provides excellent guidance for what to do in real, modern, business situations.

4 out of 5 stars Put it on your list.......2001-05-17

I found this book to be different than the typical management book. Rather than filled with the usual platitudes, it contains some real world advice on how to deal with and capitalize on situations that occur in a corporate environment. The book starts a bit slow, but it gets moving once it gets into the 10 strategies. The author has a nice conversational, straight-talking style of writing. The exercises and advice at the end of each chapter are excellent. I would recommend this book for new graduates starting in management and for seasoned veterans.

5 out of 5 stars How to Grow a Backbone.......2000-10-04

This is a must read for anyone that wants to move further faster in the business world -- especially those who are fledglings in Corporate America! Marshall writes with clarity and good humor spiced with pithy observations and examples. This is more than a pie-in-the-sky, ethereal how-to book. She backs up her advice with practical, easy to implement ACTIONS to integrate the strategies into all areas of interactions with others. And her "excercises" are more than informative and effective: they're fun to boot!

4 out of 5 stars Everything you can be.......2000-09-26

Marshall has written an exceptional book, a smart and practical book that reflects a very intelligent and perceptive grasp of business action and the people who are the action-eers. People run businesses and businesses are only as good as the people that run them. "How To Grow A Backbone" is at once very revealing and very familiar. We will all find ourselves somewhere in this book...for better or worse. We may smile or grimace at the unerring precision with which Marshall cuts straight to the bone, through all the usual fat, and shows us how much backbone we really have, I really have, you really have. Most important, she shows us how to grow what we're missing. Every CEO should read this book and then issue it to his staff, to everyone on the staff including the mail boy and the sweeper. If that CEO is big enough, smart enough (and secure enough) to encourage, to allow, to require, to inspire, his people to grow backbone, that boss will have one hell of a spinning business. Action, forward motion, innovation and fun the way business should be fun, going a mile a minute, breaking through. Everyone who dreams of being more than they are, or of being a CEO, should quit dreaming and dig into "Backbone". This is no "guru magic" that pumps you up for a week, this is the straight answer for anyone who has the courage to try to be what he or she can be. Miss Marshall will show you the way. "How To Grow A Backbone" is a lean, no nonsense bible for the feint of heart who want to grow the lion inside them. It's more than a business book. It's for anyone who hears their Jiminy Cricket whispering, you could have, you should have, why didn't you? Anyone who wants to know how to grow the seeds of character we all possess, who wants to be somebody, must read "How To Grow A Backbone". WARNING: Read only if you want to be better than you are.

..of The Best of Gourmet (everything i have ever tried has been awesome).. My first impression was that they have included more pictures in the opening section which is always a big plus, and have included some of the 'gourmet everyday' recipes as well.

On the downside, it does look like they have included quite a few recipes with very exotic ingredients.. Hopefully the rest will make up for those!

4 out of 5 stars The book is well worth owning, the title is a bit of a stretch.......2006-08-23

I've got two willow furniture books so far, this one and "Making Bent Willow Furniture" by Brenda & Brian Cameron (Amazon has both), and think this one may just be the better book for the beginner. You don't get as much in the way of furniture design (there are three pieces in the book, the two most likely to be valued are on the cover)but for what you do get there is a lot of detail shown here.

Not as much information on the Willow itself as the Cameron book, the method of construction for the chair is very similar but simplified in some ways which will make it easier for the first time chair builder. Fewer tools are listed, that will help (and give a more rustic appearance) you get started as will a very detailed set of photos covering just about anything you'll need to know.

I'd like a few more details given to such things as using nails and cutting/storing the willow you'll use but think this book is really worth owning. Anything you don't find here the Cameron's probably have in their book but this one will have enough to get a chair done for you. I think I even like Mr. Willow's chair design variation a little bit better.

            5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2002-05-06

How anyome can call this book garbage is beyond me. It is extremely helpful if you are serious about making a willow project. The step by step instructions are very helpful especially if you are a beginner. The pictures are clear and very helpful. I would recommend this book above all others and I have them all. Would really like to meet this author and thank him personaly. The only problem I had was finding the ardox nails recommended in the book.....

5 out of 5 stars Great way to delve into making willow furniture.......1999-09-26

Bim Willows "how to" book on making willow furniture is a great place for beginners to look for basic information. Easy to follow, concise, with many clear and helpful photographs make this book worthwhile. It has been a lot of fun!

3 out of 5 stars An easy-to-understand course on how to build a willow chair.......1999-09-24

This book is a simple mini-course that provides explicit directions, through clear photos, for building two willow furniture projects. I can't think of any other treatment that would so clearly teach the contruction techniques involved in making this style of chair. Any reader can be assured that she will be able to create a perfect copy of Bim Willow's chair design through the use of this book. Further exploration of rustic chair building is dependent on the motivation and imagination of the reader, as general concepts of rustic furniture design are not covered. Other titles, (Mack) cover history and design. This book beautifully serves its purpose as a beginners guide to building that first rustic willow chair.

                              Book Description

With dark humour and sometimes brutal honesty, Celtic musician Ashley MacIsaac tells of his rise from fiddle-playing prodigy in the village of Creignish, Cape Breton, to worldwide success with his unique mixture of traditional and contemporary sounds.

By his late teens, MacIsaac was on tour and making big money. He describes the highs (of various kinds) of playing to thousands of fans; of performing with renowned artists like Paul Simon, Philip Glass, and the Chieftains; and of hearing his Gaelic-language hit "Sleepy Maggie" blast from a radio in Los Angeles.

But he doesn't shy away from the downside of fame, such as money problems, unwanted media scrutiny and an addiction to crack cocaine.

The unusual twist in these familiar challenges of early stardom is MacIsaac's struggle with his sexuality and with public attitudes towards a gay performer.

The strongest undercurrent, however, is MacIsaac's abiding connection to his Celtic culture. His descriptions of his musical training and development reveal his commitment to his art and the depth of tradition in Cape Breton on which it is based.

4 out of 5 stars Fiddling with Love.......2003-09-10

There is nothing disasterous about this novel. Ashley MacIsaac was raw, edgy and above all truthful when re-telling his life. A book that is the best autobiography I have ever read.
If you know who Ashley MacIsaac is, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Fiddler, gay, crack addict, and East Coast. Chances are you thought of all four. Mr. MacIsaac does not dispute any of these and at long last was able to have his say on his life. A poignant look at his life, his way.
His thoughts on fame by 18, being the first to break the East Coast music mold, MacLeans crashed and burned his 'high' by plastering across the country he was gay. He discusses in depth how this made him and how he dealt with it.
His book is very prolific and tells everything about him in a realstic yet controversial in some ways, too. He admits to disliking to do most shows he does but that he relished every show he did pre-fame with hi how are you today.
Many people will read this and probably still think he is a nutcase but I still beleive he is an incredible musician. No one can ever dispute that. He put East Coast Music on the map and made it 'cool' and he has fused the fiddle and rave music together . . . something no one has ever done before, and probably never will. The drugs made Ashley destitute but it was the music that lifted him above it, and put him back on track.
Want to know the real Ashley MacIsaac, the one outside the media? Read this book, it may just change your mind.

4 out of 5 stars Fiddling with his past.......2003-09-06

The book is an eye opening look at what goes wrong when a Scottish boy from the Eastern most edges of Canada take his fiddle out of the small world he grew up in, and into the big universe that surrounds Cape Breton. The battle for Ashley MacIsaac's soul began when he was young, when everyone discovered what a genius he was. Yes, he could've been called a child prodigy. From the time he was a champion dancer to his unwavering talent at the fiddle, Mr. MacIsaac was destined, I think, to end up where he did. Some was his fault, which he readily admits, but I think the entertainment industry itself will suck anyone who has a talent dry. Obviously, he should've never gone to New York at the age of 17 all by himself. It was that miscalculation from all parties involved that lead him down the road of self-destruction.
MacIsaac has a brilliant talent, and the world fell in love with it. But the people who were listening to his music, who went to his shows, expected one thing, while in reality, he was giving them something completely different. Tradition is a dangerous word sometimes, and because he played traditional type Celtic music, everyone presumed MacIsaac was just like his music. But if his history could be used as a barometer, he was nothing but unpredictable. I commend him for being open about his sexuality, but he discovered the hard way that being to open could cost you. While I want to believe the world is ready to except their gay children, the entertainment industry just doesn't know what to do with them. While Melissa Etheridge and k.d. lang have a large fan base that buy's their CD's, most of their live shows have more lesbians than straight in the audience. MacIsaac wanted to be known as a fiddler player who happened to be gay, and not gay fiddler, Ashley MacIsaac. But with a combination of drugs, guilt, ego and raw talent, he became something that was far removed from reality. He certainly deserves more credit than he gets, but once you become a pariah of the press, no matter what you do, you're doomed to be reminded of all your past digressions. Fiddling offers nothing new in one sense -another biography about a superstar undone by fast life of drugs and more drugs - but it also shows clearly why sometimes becoming a music superstar is very dangerous career. MacIsaac admits that his drug addiction sprung mostly from boredom, with the endless touring, and with too much downtime. One can learn from his experience. If you want to be a music star, make lots of money, find something to occupy your time between gigs. Drugs, like pot, may help expand your "reality" but drugs like cocaine and crack lead nowhere but to a boulevard of broken dreams. And bankruptcy. I love his music, I enjoyed the book. I hope and pray that Ashley has finally put his demons behind him. He nearly lost his soul, but he found the courage in himself to change his destiny. He did it on his own terms -just like everything else - and discovered that once in a while, you can go to hell, and still survive.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and gripping. Deserves to be read........2003-08-31

Ashley MacIsaac's autobiography titled "Fiddling With Disaster: Clearing the Past," is a gripping, powerful read. Ashley is severely honest as he tells his story to writer Francis Condron.

The book is absolutely a page turner from beginning to end. I've basically put my life on hold the last few days to indulge myself totally in Fiddling With Disaster.

Ashley shares the struggles and highlights of being famous and rich, and then being famous and poor. Ashley should be applauded for telling his story as frankly as he does. He takes responsibility for his own actions, but readers will decide for themselves if the world dealt him a good or bad hand.

Ashley leaves no stone unturned. He talks about unsafe sex, HIV, what he thinks of Anne Murray, his thoughts of Cape Breton, other famous people, drugs, fame, and the list goes on and on. There wasn't a page to the 279 page book that I didn't enjoy totally.

After closing the book, I think some day on Ashley MacIsaac's headstone that it could truthfully read: I DID IT MY WAY.

I highly recommend this book. It is the best autobiography I've read to date. You won't want to put it down.
