I happened to meet the gentleman this story is about, and his lovely wife, while shopping in the PX at Ft. Lewis. They are good people and this book is worth the read. It's a good reminder of what really matters.

This biography of a man who survived a horrible crash was very interesting, I really enjoyed this book.

Plan on taking this book off of the shelf whenever you want a little inspiration for another quilt. This quilt is truly an heirloom - not one you're going to sleep under. The quilt itself will take your breath away and, hopefully, you'll be inspired to try some of the techniques, even if you aren't as ambitious as Docherty is. I went right out and bought some new fat quarters of fabric that I thought might do for some of the squares, using her approach to choosing fabric, and will start small, with only one block. Her innotative techniques and exquisite results make her both an artist and a skilled artisan. Her writing style make her an excellent teacher. Don't pass this one by.

If you want to take embellishment over the top, this is for you. Excellent source of inspiration for applique that is so special. Highly recommend.
Little Brown Bird.......2006-07-02
The book is a wonderfully designed pattern for hand applique. The entire book is devoted to the creation of one design masterpiece featuring many squares of wreaths, flowers, half square borders and birds. The overall border is exquisite and intricate. The author's patterns and directions are excellent and easy to follow. She includes a chapter on how to select fabrics to create the shadings of flowers and birds without ever being a bird or flower fabric. She teaches what to look for. The only changes I comtemplate making are redesigning some of the birds.

As Continental forces and Virginia militia units were engaged in winning independence, American quartermasters and provisioners struggled to provide these units with all the necessities of life, from meals and guns to meat, fodder for horses, the horses themselves, firewood, and every other type of material. Much of this was requisitioned from the civilian population and certificates were issued payable in either continental or state funds, depending on the units supplied, upon presentation to court authorities. Thousands of these certificates issued to Virginians were duly entered by the courts, and they provide a fascinating insight into the period of the Revolution. These "Publick" Claims booklets contain interesting and useful information about the contributions of ordinary people to the Revolutionary War. They provide some details of people's service in the militia or as guards for prisoners of war; they indicate where some bodies of troops were at particular times; and they identify providers of horses, wagons, cattle, grain, or other supplies. Much of the information in these booklets cannot be found anywhere else, which makes the surviving records particularly valuable. Also remarkable is the fact that records survived from virtually every county in the state at that time with the exception of the newly formed Kentucky counties. This makes the collection even more valuable in covering areas which heretofore in this time period have suffered from a lack of personal data. The "Virginia Publick Claims" are published by counties. In addition to a faithful transcription by Janice Luck Abercrombie and the late Richard Slatten, a complete index is provided for each county booklet. This series is an extremely important genealogical tool for searchers in Revolutionary-era materials.

What is each individual's personal message? What is the powerful "why" of one's faith? Todd Phillips explores these questions in his book Spiritual CPR. Phillips knows that most Christians know how to share their faith, but do we know why we believe? This book explores the why of our faith and the act of sharing it with others
Phillips walks us through all of the misconceptions of and problems that Christians face with evangelism. He challenges the excuses that cause believers to avoid it. He explains why sharing the gospel is the most important and the greatest privilege given to man from God. He explains what Jesus meant when He told the disciples to go into the world and preach, teach, and baptize.
Have you ever brought a person back from the dead? Most likely none of us ever will in a physical sense. Yet, when we stop and take the time to talk to people about Christ, our desire is that He will bring them to life; they are dead without Christ and are made alive with Him. If physical life is this important, eternal life ought to be even more significant to us. Phillips wants us to view evangelism with the same passion we would have for saving physical lives.
Phillips proposes that evangelism comes down to one thing: joy. He wants believers to find complete joy through sharing their faith, and he wants the lost to receive joy through the message of the gospel. Lastly, the author focuses on different methods of evangelism, showing the wrong ways of witnessing and helping readers develop an evangelism strategy that is genuine for them.
Phillips adds two helpful appendices full of resources and tips. Also included is a reader's guide that will pull together all of the helpful systems found in this book.
Phillips provides a well-rounded view of evangelism and inspires readers to move beyond their comfort zones. He gives a reason for evangelism that is not often heard - complete joy in Christ.
