Book Description

Cuban Confederate Colonel: The Life of Ambrosio José Gonzales tells the story of a revolutionary who figured prominently in both his native country's struggle against Spain and the Confederacy's fight for secession. Immortalized as the first Cuban to shed blood in the effort to oust the Spanish, Gonzales (1818?1893) managed to place himself in the center of hostilities in both his homeland and in the United States. In this biography, Antonio Rafael de la Cova examines the Cuban filibuster movement of the 1840s and 1850s, the American Civil War, and Southern Reconstruction from Gonzales's unusual perspective as both a Cuban and Confederate rebel. In doing so, de la Cova sheds new light on the connections between Southern and Cuban society, the workings of coastal defenses during the Civil War, and the vicissitudes of Reconstruction for a Cuban expatriate.

De la Cova draws on archival sources from Cuba, Spain, and the United States to offer groundbreaking material on the filibuster movement, including the integral participation of Freemasons and the involvement of Robert E. Lee. De la Cova also documents Gonzales's preparation of invading forces, authorship of a United States annexation manifesto, and association with influential Southern politicians.

With the failure of the 1854 filibuster attempts, Gonzales settled in the United States and married into South Carolina's prominent Elliott family. The author traces Gonzales's significant role in Confederate coastal defenses, his costly feud with Jefferson Davis, and his finest hour as a Confederate--as artillery commander at the Battle of Honey Hill.

Following the war, the colonel pursued a variety of vocations, all of which were marginally successful, but like many others he never provided the security he sought for his extended family. De la Cova points out that while Gonzales's connections to Cuba's economy may have made his postwar entrepreneurial endeavors distinctive, his efforts were similar to those of other formerly wealthy Southerners who sought to recover their estates and social status.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Information, Decently written. .......2006-04-24

This is not the easiest read, the author sometimes gives too much information. That makes reading more cumbersome but at the same time it does have many interesting details and tidbits. If you are intereted in Cuban and US history as it relates to filibusters and Cuban history prior to independence buy the book.

5 out of 5 stars I read this one twice - highly recommended!.......2003-09-08

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Cuban Confederate Colonel and recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the Civil War or Cuban history. It's apparent from the quality of writing and comprehensive documentation that a significant amount of time and research went into this work. De la Cova's writing is very descriptive and engaging and the story flows smoothly. The chapters are organized chronologically, but also entitled by major milestones in Gonzales' life and make it easy to move around the book.

Of particular interest to me was the complicated relationship between Gonzales and his in-laws, the wealthy Elliott family of South Carolina. Gonzales was first introduced to the Elliott clan in 1852 through his friendship with fellow Freemason, William Elliott, the family patriarch. During the next three years, Gonzales socialized with the family and carried on a platonic correspondence with one of Elliott's elder daughters, Emily, who fell in love with the Cuban. However, the attraction was not mutual, and Gonzales' subsequent marriage to Emily's much younger sister, Hattie, set the stage for a lifelong feud between the spurned sister and Gonzales. Emily's jealously and bitterness, at first manifested in subtle ways, later became overt attacks on Gonzales' character as she attempted to poison his relationship with the family, especially his children.

My favorite chapters dealt with the reconstruction period when the Gonzales/Elliott families struggled to put their lives back together. Born into wealth and privilege, they initially appeared ill equipped to survive under the conditions of poverty and hardship forced upon them in the aftermath of the South's defeat. With a little cooperation between the families and some creative financing, Gonzales purchases one of Elliott's former plantations, Social Hall, and begins his quest to provide financial security for his family.

The author's skillful use of quotations from the family letters throughout the book allows the principals to speak for themselves and brings them vividly to life as their story develops. I also appreciated that quite a bit of information concerning the Gonzales children as adults was included. This is a fitting epilogue to the story and does not leave me wondering what happened to everybody else after the subject dies.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Money!.......2003-09-01

Very few people, Cuban or American, are aware of the role that Cubans have played in United States' history before the rise of Castro. However, Cubans were in the United States for more than a century before Castro's revolution. Not just bystanders, waiting for Spain to get out of Cuba, they were full participants in events around them, where ever they may be.

This biography is a fascinating look at one Cuban's involvement in the Cuban freedom movement as well as the American Civil War and his struggle for survival during reconstruction. At the same time, the author seamlessly integrates the story of Gonzales' family life, in particular his marriage into a wealthy Southern family and life long love affair with his wife, Hattie. Although very well documented and suitable for a textbook (and priced like one), this book reads like a novel and held my interest throughout. Highly recommended!!!

    Book Description

When a skeleton is all that's left to tell the story of a crime, Mary H. Manhein, otherwise known as "the bone lady," is called in. For almost two decades, Manhein has used her expertise in forensic pathology to help law enforcement agents--locally, nationally, and internationally--solve their most perplexing mysteries. She shares the extraordinary details of the often high-profile cases on which she works, and the science underlying her analyses. Here are Civil War skeletons, cases of alleged voodoo and witchcraft, crimes of political intrigue, and the before-and-after of facial reconstruction.

Written with the compassion and humor of a born storyteller, The Bone Lady is an unforgettable glimpse into the lab where one scientist works to reveal the human stories behind the remains.

"Whether reporting the stench, suffocating heat, or brutal sorties by biting insects in steamy bayous . . . Manheim is at once straightforward and appropriately droll. . . . She teaches us a great deal, often puncturing popular misconceptions." --Book Page

"A subtly creepy collection of stories . . . A rare, effective blend of entertainment and education." --Kirkus Reviews

5 out of 5 stars The Bone Lady.......2007-08-10

Everyone who opens this book will not put it down until it's finished! I have spoken with Dr. Manheim regarding her forensic work. She is,undoubtedly, one of the most entertaining, knowledgable and caring teachers I have ever encountered. I look forward to her next book.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting--Needs More.......2007-01-12

After hearing Mary Manhein speak I was very interested in her book. In the book she did record many cases, and gave a pretty good overview of the field. The best part of the book was her retelling what brought her to become a forensic anthropologist. I was disappointed at the lack of real detail and depth in talking about the cases and the politics of the field.

5 out of 5 stars The Bone Lady: Life as a Forensic Anthropologist.......2006-03-06

This is a wonderful book. It is fun to read about Mary Manheim's childhood and her career and the cases she has worked on. The short chapters focus on particular cases she has helped solve. It is sprinkled through out with stories of life in Louisiana.

2 out of 5 stars Skip it, its just fluff.......2006-02-14

Don't waste your time or money on this one as there are far better forensic books out there. This book was just a collection of short narratives reading more like a personal diary than any kind of scientific narrative laying out the facts of cases. I guess it lives up to its subtitle of "Life as a Forensic Anthropologist" in that she usually presents only HER part in each case with little presentation of the entire case. The forensic cases are not really the star of this book, the author is. I was frustrated with the lack of depth. Instead, read "The Body Farm" by Bill Bass. Excellent storytelling there! He gives you personal stories, but also provides all the fascinating forensic info to provide a complete picture for the cases he has investigated.

2 out of 5 stars No there there.......2005-08-20

I found this book quite tedious, since the author makes the fundamental mistake of thinking the subject of the book should be herself instead of her work. There is almost no information on forensic anthropology; her descriptions of cases are very short and center mainly on how she felt about them, rather than what the actual details were. From the cover and the blurbs I expected actual case histories; the book doesn't deliver. The book as written would really only be interesting to people who know the author personally.

What causes multiple sclerosis? When will there be a cure?

Dr. Howard Weiner has spent nearly three decades trying to find answers to the mysteries of multiple sclerosis, an utterly confounding and devastating disease that afflicts almost half a million Americans. Curing MS is his moving, personal account of the long-term scientific quest to pinpoint the origins of the disease and to find a breakthrough treatment for its victims.

Dr. Weiner is at the cutting edge of MS research and drug development, and he describes in clear and illuminating detail the science behind the symptoms and how new drugs may hold the key to “taming the monster.” In Curing MS, Dr. Weiner teaches us the “Twenty-one Points” of MS, a concise breakdown of the knowns and unknowns of the disease; tells stories from the frontlines of laboratories and hospitals; and offers a message of hope that a cure can—and will—be found.

Having had MS for fifteen years, I was glad to read something a little more informing than the usual "stuff" I was able to learn things that I was not aware of. This book can be quite clinical and boring for the newly diagnosed. Very interesting case studies on actual patients... shows the large range of difference in this disease with each person!

Trustable cientific information, written in a clear and easy-reading way, altogether with the history of the writer's own professional career, make this book a must for patients and all people interested in the fundamentals of the disease, mainly its therapies.
I just found that the part regarding stem cell transplantation was a bit too short.

5 out of 5 stars An important book from a major researcher.......2006-12-08

As someone living with MS, this is one of the most important books I've read. The author is on the front lines of MS research, and he gives frank and detailed explanations of exactly what is being done to find a "cure" (and what can be considered a "cure"). He helps you understand the real truth behind the two-minute sound bites the national media occasionally hypes regarding MS research. This book is an excellent and important read for anyone interested in the science behind the research.

        4 out of 5 stars interesting .......2006-07-01

dr. weiner writes in an entertaining, story-telling format. being one of the premier physicians in this field, it is interesting to read the stories in his book. it is not the typical format for ms coping books, that examines topically symptoms, treatments, coping, etc. the reader interested in the most up-to-date information on drug trials should probably visit internet sites such as the national multiple sclerosis society. in order to get a better understanding of the processes behind the research, this is an excellent book! worth the price, new.

                                Book Description

This large format coffee-table book describes and illustrates 420 species of flowering bulbs found at the western Cape Province in South Africa. It includes 62 full color plates reproduced from water colors, painted by Barbara Jeppe, a well-known floral artist. The descriptive text which
faces each plate gives comprehensive botanical information, including Latin and common names, size and color of the inflorescence, number and arrangement of leaves, and period of flowering and distribution patterns. A comprehensive glossary of terms is included, making this an ideal book for both
amateur and professional botanists, and all flower lovers.

There are lots of books on spring bulbs with glorious photos of tulips and daffodils, but finally here is a book that treats hyacinths as something other than a brief afterthought. If you thought hyacinths come only in light pink, white, or blue prepare to be amazed. There are soft orange, almost black purple, yellow, lilac, and wine hyacinths. Most are single flowers but some have frilly double florets. Chapter 6 (20 pages) is nothing but hyacinths--photos of florets from different cultivars in side by side comparison, descriptions of over 100 species and cultivars, and history and cultivation tips. For those with an interest in old Victorian varieties, Geoff Stebbings gives the introduction date, the introducer and even the parents where known. He does the same excellent job for daffodils and tulips in other chapters, but there are other books that cover them. However, if like me you have been enchanted by the sweet smell of hyanciths and want to know more, this is the book to get.

This is the story of a young Jewish girl who survived a concentration camp and came to the United States after the war to live the life that many like Anne Frank never survived to experience.

Inges second book, Beyond The Yellow Star To America, carries the reader into Inges world of an immigrant in 1945 America at once dealing with her own psychological and physiological growing up and the real, external world of being an outsider to American culture. With vibrantly clear images, Inge tells her story through a series of sequential vignettes reinforced by many photographs from her collection.

The pre-teen, teenage and adult reader will immediately understand her problems dealing with group acceptance, self-esteem, and peer pressure; however, her relentless drive to succeed and wonderfully close relationship with her parents will take an understanding of her special scars from having been totally degraded when a child of The Holocaust.

Following a brief historical background, we arrive with Inge in New York Harbor in 1946, aboard the Marine Perch, an American troop transport ship, and travel with her through her lifes turning points against the 1940s, 50s and 60s settings of New Yorks East Side, Brooklyn, and Queens. We revisit Europe with her. The hot and cold factions of her Americanized relatives; the resolve of her parents to achieve in the American economic mainstream in spite of the physical odds against them during their first steps to independence; and Inges private on-going physical nightmare fills the reader with pride in the positive qualities of the human spirit and its determination to survive.

But, Inges American years are not just survival years as is often the story of Holocaust victims. Her resulting personal, psychological fuel from the past drives her dynamism and ideals of today for the betterment of Mankind. She is an activist for humankind. She is both an esteemed chemist/medical researcher and an accomplished motivational public speaker for brotherhood through education and communication, against bigotry and other manipulative tactics that divide humanity into isolated groups. She resides in New York.

This is an inspiring work by an author who is telling of her own life story. This woman not only survived the horrors of the Holocaust but she also survived illness and went on to acheive much greater things.

5 out of 5 stars Jerry Jeff: Real Americana; Real American........2001-10-24

This is a great true story of a wandering minstrel with more courage and sense of adventure than anyone you will probably ever read about. Jerry Jeff wandered the country seeking his "fortune and fame" and living by his wits and talent. And what a wit and talent he is. If he had been backed by a big record label and a ton of publicity he might be one of the hottest stars ever. But Jerry Jeff would never have made it like that, because he preferred his "own" way, which included a great deal of night life. Jerry Jeff's story is even more remarkable because it includes the relationships he formed with many of his contemporaries like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Jimmy Buffett and others. I have always enjoyed Jerry Jeff's music ever since I heard "Mr. Bojangles" on AM radio back in 1968. I own all of his work either on vinyl or CD, so his story I just had to have. I purchased one of the limited edition autographed copies as soon as they came available and have read it twice. I have seen him perform live three times and look forward to the next. One of the biggest thrills I had was visiting New Orleans a few years ago and seeing the places he hung out at, like The Cafe Dumond. I highly recommend this book and JJW's music. I hope he performs for many more years and that I can save enough money to travel with him on his Belize get-away some day.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2000-02-07

Been a fan since the 'Viva Terlingua' recording first hit my turntable back in the day. Actually purchased an autographed copy for my wife on her birthday and finally got an opportunity to read it myself.

It's a great read with Jerry Jeff his ownself's style evident throughout. From Ronald Clyde Crosby, Jerry Ferris, Jerry Jeff, Jacki Jack and back we are along for the ride. Don't miss the insight into the life of Hondo Crouch and Luckenbach, the funny twists surrounding getting Mr. Bojangles on the air, and how Gary P. Nunn's "London Homesick Blues" was put on the Viva Terlingua album.

Finally, I think this is one fine and well deserved valentine to Susan. It's worth the read to see JJW reinforcing family priorities as he acknowledges his role as father first, entertainer second.

4 out of 5 stars Rough and Ready.......2000-01-18

Real fans of Jerry Jeff will love this book. I bought a copy of the book after JJW's Chicago concert last November, which he autographed, and finished reading it before I went to bed that night. Don't expect great writing here...but do expect an extremely entertaining book. Unlike most of the muscians out there, his life is very much like his songs (and like the book itself), rough but honest, dreamy yet succinct. Jerry Jeff was a true drifter, a cowboy poet who truly did his own thing. Warning: The book made me go out and buy some of the albums I didn't already have. The most gratifying part of all comes at the end, when we learn about how he has taken control of his career and his life. My only complaint is that some work with a good editor would have filled in some of the cracks. But then, it wouldn't have been true Jerry Jeff then, would it?

5 out of 5 stars The story behind the ballads.......2000-01-11

Received an autographed copy for Christmas. Finished it in record time - couldn't keep away from it. Those of us who have appreciated the storytelling ability of this man through his music can truly appreciate the stories behind the ballads. I had no idea I was really listening to the man's life on LP throughout seventies. The writing is as footloose and fancy free as his concerts, and equally as entertaining. As he says - this is going to be his only book, and its a keeper.

                                      4 out of 5 stars worth reading.......1999-12-27

I got this book for Christmas and found that I could not put it down. No, it was not a way to tune out my mother in law or avoid taking out the trash, or return it to Amazon.com for a refund. The book is about a true American Hero: Jerry Jeff Walker.

What I liked most about the book was Jerry Jeffs honest approach to life "taking it as it comes". I also liked the fact that he is a good father and husband. I go to see Jerry Jeff whenever possible, and reading this book is a no brainer. so get off that LA freeway and buy this book.

Jerome Charyn's three-part memoir of his boyhood in the Bronx has all the imagery and color of an enchanting and entertaining novel -- someone has said that it captures the author's world so accurately that it can't possibly be true. Bronx Boy, like The Dark Lady of Belorusse and The Black Swan, both selected by The New York Times as Notable Books of the Year, is a tour de force of memory and imagination. In this third and final installment, the higher truths of a masterly writer's art render moot the question of exactly where the real world ends and Charyn's imagined world begins.Still known as "Baby" although a younger brother has come along, young Charyn makes pocket money delivering eggs, belongs to a group of 12-year-old wannabe gangsters that meet in a soda shop run by an ex-con, and spends afternoons telling stories to the adoring wife of a wealthy Russian migr.He becomes famous for his black-and-tans -- a concoction of coffee ice cream, seltzer, milk, chocolate sauce, crushed pecans -- and "a touch of bitterness that may have been the Bronx."So famous, indeed, that he walks away the winner of an annual black-and-tan contest sponsored by the real-life top gangster called "The Little Man" -- Meyer Lansky. In Charyn's hands, the often ridiculed Bronx is a magic place, as full of odd and wonderful characters as a three-ring circus. And at the center of it all, young "Baby," not as lucky in love as he would like to be, drinking it all in, putting his own extraordinary take on it.Charyn looks back at this with his singular vision, and records it all for us with the skill of the fine writer he is.This is a delightful and often moving story of a childhood that could only have been lived in New York in the fifties, a New York experience that could only have taken place in the Bronx of those days, a growing-up saga that could only have been captured by this singular author.AUTHORBIO: Jerome Charyn was born in the Bronx in 1937.He is a Guggenheim Fellow whose novel about Wild Bill Hickok, Darlin' Bill, received the Rosenthal Award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. In 1996 he was named an Officier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture. Charyn's novels, stories, essays, comic strips, and children's books have been published in thirteen languages. He lives in New York and Paris and teaches film history and the aesthetics of crime fiction at the American University of Paris

                                        Book Description

We played stickball games outside Beekman's candy store, as young teenagers, almost every day of the week, from spring until the first snowflake fell. A line drive off Beekman's store window brought him flying out the front door, white apron strings trailing behind him. A broomstick might fly from a batter's hands and rocket toward Beekman's front windows. Unofficial records and fading memories indicate that although Mr. Beekman may have lost his breath on several occasions during our stickball games, he never lost a window.

In this engaging memoir, author Marty Toohey paints a vibrant portrait of growing up in the Bronx during the 1930s and 40s. In the Bronx's cultural melting pot, Toohey and his friends delighted in the simple pleasures of life. Toohey shares his memories of roasting stolen potatoes or “mickies” in an empty lot on 167th Street, of the milkman's horse tapping an early morning cadence on the cobblestones of Fulton Avenue, and of hiding from the nuns at St. Augustine's Church, known as the “Cathedral of the Bronx.”

Brimming with the simple charm of the past, Bronx Boy is rich with details, transporting its readers into a forgotten time of innocence.

Even though I didn't grow up in New York, I found Mr. Toohey's recollections to have a universal appeal. His charming and easy to read style immerses the reader in the pleasures and innocence of a time well remembered in today's world.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A Fun Read.......2005-07-22

Anyone that grew up in New York City in the 1930's and 1940's will melt with nostalgia reading this charming and heartwarming book. You don't even have to have been from the Bronx. I grew up in Brooklyn and could relate perfectly to Marty Toohey's anecdotes of his childhood on the NYC mainland. You don't even have to be Irish Catholic to laugh along with his scenes of family and street life in the economically deprived years following the Depression and during World War II. If you were a young New Yorker then, Irish, Jewish, Italian, whatever, Toohey's experiences will bring back your happiest memories. Written in conversational style, this is a fun read.
