Book Description
The units that served in the Persian Gulf War were primarily made up of reservists and national guardsmen who were called to duty from their comfortable lives and good civilian jobs. Diary of Desert Storm's Combat Gynecologist is a unique memoir that tells how a middle-aged Milwaukee physician found himself on the staff of the 350th Evacuation Hospital in Saudi Arabia.
When Anthony Pagedas volunteered for the Army Reserve in 1990, thirty-five years had passed since his last tour of duty in a San Francisco army hospital. Family, friends and colleagues questioned why a fifty-six-year-old gynecologist would want to reup.
As Operation Desert Storm continued to escalate, it became increasingly possible that Dr. Pagedas might actually be called to serve-except for one thing: What good would his particular expertise be on the field of battle?
Just ask the brave women who made up eleven percent of the American armed forces in the Gulf War.
Though Dr. Pagedas had no prior experience as a field doctor, he quickly adapted his talents to harmonize with his more seasoned colleagues. Together, they formed a dedicated, tightly knit team that worked diligently and uncomplainingly under extraordinary conditions.
This unforgettable personal account shares an unusual perspective of the Gulf War, and Dr. Pagedas eloquently tells his very human story with humor and compassion.

Very Good Book Documenting the Reservist Role in Gulf War.......2001-07-18
As a tentmate, I find his accounts very accurate. He brings a human element to the reservist role activated from private practice and serving in the armed forces during operation desert storm. The EVAC hospital located in northern Saudi Arabia was important in the ground war as well as reconstruction afterwards with the care of the POW. The book is light and entertaining. It is a modern day "MASH" delineating the real life experiences of a field doctor serving in the army.
Book Description
A moving and beautifully written memoir in which the author turns the exploratory lens of a brilliant psychoanalytic mind on the dark corners of his own life. Allen Wheelis has helped many patients understand themselves and cope with the legacies of trauma or obsession that shape the neurotic personality. Here he uses his own life as the uncharted territory for this same process of discovery. The story begins with his parents' courtship and a life of extreme poverty in rural Texas. When Wheelis is a small boy, his father contracts tuberculosis. He will spend several years bedridden and dying, exercising to the last a tyrannical control over his family. In one searing scene, Wheelis is punished by being made to cut the grass in the yard with a razor, a task that will occupy every day of his summer. Timidity, insecurity, and a cloyingly close connection to his mother mark Wheelis's efforts to establish himself in the adult world. In the course of trying to write a novel as a young man, Wheelis falls mysteriously ill. Eventually he realizes that he has made himself ill so that his failure to write can be excused. It is this perception that leads him to the study of medicine, and eventually psychiatry. Through his eyes, we come to understand how a gift for analysis--like a gift for prophecy--brings little comfort to its possessor, and no guarantee of happiness.
Customer Reviews:
Can women empathize with this?.......2001-12-02
It can be embarassing sometimes for a reader to hear about sexual desire-- particularly when it reveals so well that forbidden place men seem to know. Somehow, Wheelis avoids going overboard. At one point, he admits to the reader that if we like him, he has failed to truly reveal himself. Perhaps the reason I like him is that I am thankful. Usually male sexual desire is loaded-- we (as men) are either taught to embrace it (machismo) or chastise it. In this case I it was simply felt and explained.
A book that changed my life.......2001-10-20
I am editor of the professional journal "Psychotherapy In Australia" and also a therapist. So I've read many many books on, by, and for therapy and therapists. Allen Wheelis' "The Listener" is utterly distinctive and forced me to confront myself about just how honest I have been with myself in my own life. It is also beautifully written. I've read this book three times now, ans gained more each time, and I've set off on a quest to read all his other books. Irvin Yalom has reviewed this book by asking if a more honest autobiography has ever been written. I have no fear in answering "No".
Heart-wrenching.......2000-02-13
I've read many, many self-help books in my pursuit to resolve issues such as controlling food intake, poor social skills, negative self-image, and just simply how to manage what happens externally, so that I'm internally balanced. Then I read Wheelis's "How People Change". POW. What a great impact on me. And in that small book, I got a good glimpse into his life. I absolutely had to know more about him. But while reading Listener, I had to keep reminding myself that is not a self-help book. What I was thinking while reading, was how interesting it was to hear about his emotional challenges, the whole range of dilemma's he lived through. This book supplies a lot of very valuable lessons on how *not* to live life, in contrast to his People Change book. 1.) I will make absolutely sure I am emotionally available to my wife when I do find her and get married. LIke Wheelis, I've been over-analytical, but moreso than Wheelis, been very lonely,( full of meaningless short relationships where sex was pretty much it) 2.) Concerning his agony over not being able to sow his wild oates, not getting enough sex as a young man, this is something I used to dwell on. My attitude, as a Christian I've recently become, is, everytime I feel that heart-in-the-pit-of-my-stomach feeling when I see a beautiful woman with wonder what I'm missing out or how I'm suffering, this life as a human being is short and I'm running out of time to give as much as possible, not lust as much as possible. The lust you experience with one spouse is enough! No other sex is necessary. I wish that Wheelis could have replaced his thoughts of deprivation, during his life, with these sort of thoughts. I am not saying to be a Christian or even religious, but take *some* kind of spirtual approach and realize that a part of you never dies and just because you didn't experience as much sex as you wanted, doesn't mean you've officially blown a "chance". You are eternal, and there are joys ahead after this little margin of human existence, I'm convinced (yeah i guess I *am* asking you to a little religious), that make human lust very minor in comparison. I really felt for him and the pain he described. In an especially sexually-explicit segment of about two pages, he speaks for all men, in terms of our unfortunate hard-wiredness to want sex so bad and under any condition that we want. More than anything, this book will drive you right back to his How People Change book to re-read it and absorb it. ( If your inspirational book of choice is something else, then go re-read that again. I recommend the road less traveled)
Has a more honest autobiography ever been written?.......1999-11-04
Allen Wheelis who has written a series of extraordinary novels and professional psychiatric books, offers a moving, beautiful, and powerfully evocative memoir. Psychoanalysts, he says, know too much to hide behind self-decption and this astonishing book reveals the shape of a life seen straight, seen without distorting lenses.
Poor Allen...his father needed a psychoanalyst!.......1999-10-11
Throughout the whole book I felt nothing but pain for this poor little boy; abused by his father, who grew into the adult victim of his elderly mother---a mother whose repressed sexual desires (due to her husbands illness) were directed toward her son. I cried for Allen the boy and Allen the man.

The Doula Advantage
Your Complete Guide to Having an Empowered and Positive Birth with the Help of a Professional Childbirth Assistant
by Rachel Gurevich
Take Control of Your Childbirth Experience
New moms are spreading the word to pregnant women just like you: Doulas make pregnancy and childbirth the celebratory experience it is meant to be! Doulas are professionally trained women who provide support before, during, and after delivery. Research has shown that doulas help women have positive birth experiences, decrease the need for pain medication, improve breastfeeding success, and reduce the need for cesarean sections and other invasive procedures. Author Rachel Gurevich interviewed more than 235 women and birth professionals to bring you this best-kept pregnancy secret. Inside, you'll find real mothers' stories and discover how doulas make a joyful difference in childbirth. You'll learn:
·The many ways doulas provide labor support, whether you plan a "natural" or medicated birth
·How to find, hire, and choose the right doula
·How specialized doulas can help you before or after the baby's birth
·How doulas help the dad-to-be
·And more!
Foreword by Mayer Eisenstein, M.D., medical director, Homefirst Health Services

"Comprehensive, thought-provoking, and highly moving. . . . A must read for any woman thinking of using the services of a doula."
— Ann Douglas, author, The Mother of All Pregnancy Books and The Mother of All Baby Books
Customer Reviews:
Doula Advantage - a balanced view.......2007-02-17
This book was informative and easy to use (you do not need to read it cover to cover, only the sections that apply to you). It comes with good questions for interviewing Doulas for prenatal, labor, or post-natal care. It is not preachy or overly anti-medical establishment, so it comes across in a caring, unbiased manner. It helped me explain to my husband how a Doula could benefit him as well as me during labor, for which he was relieved and grateful! It also gave me some statistics (about shorter labors, less intervention, etc.) to support my decision and justify the out-of-pocket expense of a Doula.
Huntsville, AL doula review on birthing assistants books.......2006-08-27
After reading this book, I feel fortunate to count myself amongst such a compassionate array of ladies who call themselves doulas. The author, Rachel Gurevich, (who also wrote the Fab Job EBook on How to Become a Doula) puts a very personal experience out there for all to see and includes many studies and testimonials from real women who have had doulas by their side. She covers every aspect about doulas and their services and even a chapter on "Hiring a Labor Doula" for those who don't know where to start. There are even forms that can be photocopied in the Appendix such as an Interview Guide and Third Party Reimbursement, as well as Organizational Contact Information. If I had to choose only one book about doulas, it would be this one. Why? Because it is personal, has an abundance of practical information and it calls me (a doula) a "special woman". The last chapter is devoted to how to become one of these special women who count ourselves privileged to serve others.
So much better than The Doula Book!.......2005-08-02
This is the best book about doulas I've ever read. It is much and much better than The Doula Book and as far as I'm concerned this book should be required reading for doula certification in stead of the Doula Book. Also for people who want to know what a doula is and does, this book is the best by far. I highly recommend it for everybody who works with pregnant women and women in labor, as well as expectant parents. The book is very easy to read and is written in clear language.
Thinking of hiring a doula?.......2004-01-08
You need this book. The author does a terrific job of pointing out the medical and psychological benefits of doula care and otherwise making the case for doulas. The book also contains leads on other great doula resources, so it doubles as a doula sourcebook. Excellent reading.
Excellent book to answer all your doula questions!.......2003-12-04
I am a childbirth educator and Hypno-doula trainer, and am asked so many times about the benefits of hiring a doula, how to contact them and what to ask to make sure it's a good fit. This book explains it all and more, and I appreciate having it for my lending library. All pregnant women should consider obtaining it since anyone having a hospital birth needs a doula! Childbirth eductors should also get it for their students and encourage them to be informed of all of their birthing choices.
Book Description
The perfect team--a gynecologist and her chef husband--have put together a book full of great advice and over 125 wonderful recipes to add estrogen naturally to your diet. As a gynecologist, Dr. Hope Ricciotti has been counseling women about the best way to stay healthy and lower the impact of menopausal side effects for years. She has found that some women either cannot tolerate hormone replacement therapy or do not feel it is right for them. What she suggests is adding phytoestrogens--natural estrogens found in food--as well as calcium and antioxidants to one's diet for all the benefits of estrogen without any of its worries. Even women on hormone replacement therapy will find that these delicious recipes will add to their health. Vincent Connelly, a trained chef, worked with Dr. Ricciotti to give each recipe the best in nutrition and in taste. It would be hard to resist pan-seared salmon with goat cheese, leeks, and basil or gratin of potatoes, chard, and roasted peppers. Even even the busiest women can make many of the recipes. Besides main entrees, sections on breakfast foods, sandwich spreads, pastas, desserts, and even smoothies are included.
Customer Reviews:
What a disappointment.......2002-09-19
I should have paid better attention to one of the reviews that said the book didn't have nutritional information--the recipes are not all that valuable without it. The book in a nutshell: make fruit smoothies out of silken tofu and add tofu to or use it as a substitute for meat in all of your regular recipes. Oh yeah, and eat a lot of broccoli. I guess that as a vegetarian I wasn't impressed by the uses of tofu, flaxseed, etc.
A life saver.......2000-03-07
The Menopause Cookbook is one of the finest books on preventive health that I have read. The medical information is concise, relevant, and the author speaks to me like an equal partner. The nutrition information is up-to-date, and is all based on referenced data from reliable sources.
Soy in the diet is not voodoo. It works, and it is healthy for all individuals. Vincent Connelly has worked miracles with soy, particularly silken tofu. I prepared garlic mashed pototatoes, which are made creamy with silken tofu instead of cream, and my husband was fooled. I prepared the "Creamy" Ceasar Salad and could not belive that silken tofu works beautifully as a substitute for oil.
Thank you for this excellent, informative, and delicious book. It is the answer I have been looking for.
Nutrition Information.......2000-03-03
I liked this book very much, but was disappointed that each recipe did not include nutrition information. I'm always interested in that aspect of a recipe. There are many interesting recipes that I certainly want to try.
The Menopause Cookbook.......2000-02-20
This is a fabulous book. I caught a glimpse of the interview on the Today Show and immediately ordered the book. The text on menopause is easy to read and "friendly". It is pertinent and very informative! The recipes are out of this world! The ingredients are healthy and I am very excited about using them. I am telling everyone about this book! I am ordering several copies as gifts. Thank you, thank you!
Tofu never tasted so good!.......2000-02-07
My wife is going through menopause and trying to decide whether or not she should take hormones. We are both concerned about the increased breast cancer risk connected with hormones.
I saw this book advertised on the Today show and bought it, thinking that if there was a natural, safe way to boost hormones then we should try it. I admit that I didn't think I would like tofu!
Imagine our surprise when we found recipes for mashed potatoes, ceasar salad and pesto...all without the cream and oil. Imagine our greaater surprise when we realized that we couldn't tell the difference between these recipes and those made with that fattening, unhealthy stuff.
Feelling great and eating well... without hormones... and without breast cancer worries.

A Must Have for Darter-Lovers.......2001-03-02
This is a MUST HAVE for anyone into North American Native Fishes, especially Darters. Although scientific data is a little out of date due to some nomenclatural restructuring, this is still one of my favorite books! It seems to cover ever species in great detail, and has more photos than you can drool on. I only wish Larry would do an update on it! Well worth the search, and well worth any price.

Customer Reviews:
Quick & easy & one of the best quilting books I have!.......2004-10-24
I started quilting two years ago and since that time I have made quite a few quilts. Easy ones, hard ones and I have wanted to do more complex quilts. At least I thought I did until now. I don't remember how I found this particular quilt book but I love it! The quilts are easy, especially using the "big" blocks in the projects. The directions are easy, step by step in simple terms. The color options are limitless and I am having a ball making these quilts. I have just started one for my father for Christmas in plaids and it is beautiful. I know I wil get another one done, just in time!
I also love scrappy quilts and there are plenty of options for wonderful projects.
I just can't say enough about this book.
If you like "simple" but beautiful, then this book is for you!
Fantastic book.......2004-04-29
This book is helping me sew my first quilt. It is a wonderful guide, and has great diagrams, explanations, and quilt designs. I'm thrilled with how easy it is to use, and with the way the quilt is turning out. I highly, highly recommend the book.

Book Description
This sensitive book offers a comprehensive discussion of the options available to prospective parents after hearing bad results from prenatal testing. The pros and cons of both termination and continuing the pregnancy are presented in a non-judgmental way, offering families information and reassurance that they must do what is right for themselves. Quotes and stories from people who have both continued and ended the pregnancy are included, clearly showing that neither choice is easy and neither one offers a short cut. Both are painful and life altering. Too often family, friends and even medical caregivers may put on pressure about what they think would be best. The big question is, 'Which decision is the one that you can live with for the rest of your life.' Excellent resource list and bibliography are included. Families are encouraged to read this guide at the time of their decision-making, before they make a permanent choice.

as bad as the first review I read of it!.......2005-08-22
The book itself is bad. The words written in it are more than wrong, and the author never denies that HE knows nothing about her. But what made me even more angry was the reveiw by "Righteous babe" (December 2004), located on this page. She too gets the lyrics and story wrong. Anyone who owns a cd and calls themselves a fan should know the lyrics. Especially if your badmouthing someone else for not doing their research. Her quoted lyrics are from "Shameless". Anyone who has "Dilate" can go and read the correct lyrics for themselves to see that she actually sings "I gotta cover my butt, cuz I covet another mans wife." So her whole review is just as useless as the book. I guess "righteous babe" isn't so right. Back to the book though, I am glad I bought it at a used book store. It is not a window into Ani's life. I think her music is the story of her life, and will not ever be found in the pages of a book.
I chose one star because there wasn't an option for 0.......2004-12-22
This book was so horribly written. I read it when it first came out so now isn't a good time for me to write a review (years later) but I just found this place to write reviews. This guy has a lot of facts wrong - first of all he says that Ani married her drummer, Andy Stochanski, when she really married her sound engineer, Andrew Gilchrist! Geeze, how could you get that wrong, yeah I know, Andy and Andrew may be similar, but if you know anything about her you'd get at least that fact straight! And some of the interpretations of songs were wrong too. Not that I'm an expert on knowing what Ani was thinking, but I've seen a direct quote from her saying that in her quote "Better cover my mouth cuz I coveted another man's wife", she isn't saying that she slept with the man's wife! Contrary to popular belief she's saying that she betrayed the wife (coveted her) by sleeping with her husband. This was actually stated by Ani that that's what she meant - and it was Andrew Gilchrist who she slept with (he was married when she met him). Anyway, it's poorly written. I see that he's written at least one or two more books about her now, I can hardly believe it! I wouldn't waste my money.
the man needs to get his facts straight.......2002-10-08
the author threw a bunch of hear say and rumors into book format and sold it. a lot of the so called "facts" are blatant fallacies. buy a record, go to her concerts, you'll learn more about her.
An attempt, but hardly a good one.......2001-08-17
I was very disappointed when I read this book. Yes, I understand that the author did not intend this piece to be an official window into Ani's life... He states that he spent 3 months listening to ani's recordings, in an attempt to completely deconstruct them to get inside her head... I have spent nearly 7 years (I am, afterall, only 17) listening to Ani's music. And for one person to try to tell me just what Ani is "all about," is so infuriating. Ani's music touches each one of us differently, in my opinion, as we find our own experiences mirrored through her work, whether or not that's what she intended... I must... point out there are so many inaccuracies that this book should be kept farther away from the beginners than from anyone else. And more importantly, the only true way (in my opinion) to experience Ani is through her words, thoughts, and emotions.
she still doesnt have what she deserves.......2001-06-29
ani's amazing. i think this book could have potentially been ani-worthy, but there were a few holes which probably could have been filled, and who could do that better than ani herself? im a huge ani fan and am still waiting for a book which really enhances her accomplishments. however, i do recommend reading it merely because anything published about this amazing woman is worth reading.
Book Description

Ani DiFranco's career as a singer-songwriter, recording artist, and independent recording label 'executive' for Righteous Babe Records has given new inspiration to the world of alternative music. Great biography!! Even as a long time fan you can still learn something new. Much of the biography is direct quotes from Ani's many interviews. Great reading for old fans, new fans, and/or for anyone with any appreciation for music.
